This is the first video game I ever got. I’ll never forget...I got the bundle for Christmas back in the 90s. It was my favorite in the series until Sonic 3 😭
This was my first game as a kid… playing it on my dads Genesis. Of course, I never beat it until I got older (because of the stupid final boss) but I loved it. Me and my brother used to play the multiplayer, and I used to love playing it. My brother was always bad at it, so I always won. (He still sucks at it) I love this game
What I loved from the updated Sonic reviews was that it went into more research of the games giving the fans insight of how the games are developed, how the characters were introduced, and also with other media along with the games such as commercials, merchandise, and the HD renditions of the games. It goes to show that you were off to a great start with the games a decade ago, only to bring them back for redemption!
Ok. I'm surprised everyone is still like "why does sonic have a plane?? Why don't he just run everywhere?" The guy lives on an island, and can't swim. He needs the plane
@@reshawshid If I were sonic, I would absolutely not want to chance running for extended periods of time on the one thing that's pretty much guaranteed to kiil me

7:31 HA! Good one 😆 I like to think after the events of this game Sonic gave his plane to Tails forever because of his good help and the fact that Tails saved his life at the end
I’m Glad this storytelling is a fixture in these reviews, really makes it stand out more in the sea of Sonic reviews today. I’d like to highlight the simple conveyance of Eggman Aggrandization with the final bosses. His Robotic version is Sonic is larger than Sonic and just to outdo that the robotic version of the man himself, is humongous. A representation of how he sees himself, larger than life.
The special stage was super hard, but I was so addicted to the game, and really like the special stages, that i basically had them memorized lol. So the tails issue that he lags behind and ends up crashing the bombs was not a problem for me, i would simple jump early to compensate. I was so addicted that I was able to get super sonic while still in emerald hill (I think there are a total of 9 special flags in that stage). Basically half my time to finish the game was spend just in the emerald hill doing stages, then i would simple zoom around the others stages in a few seconds lol
I like how these “remakes” are more personal than his other videos. If you follow this channel you’re already familiar with these games so this is an opportunity for Johnny to share his memories.
I just love the level of stakes this game reaches by its ending zones. The tranquility of Sky Chase where you take to the skies to prepare for the bigger threat. The caution and vertigo you experience at Wing Fortress. The fragility and urgency by the time you're at Death Egg and have to face two of the most lethal bosses in the whole game with no rings. A truly excellent Sonic endgame to overcome.
"I said fuck it but then one morning I decided to try it again and I won" you almost sent me to tears with the fucking nostalgia of that statement that shit is the most relatable thing I've ever heard
I believe the reason Sonic owns a plane is because he cant run across the fucking ocean. Sonic has gradually become faster and faster as the games go on, but even then, Sonic cant exactly stop once he starts running on water, or else he'll just drown. As for why he wanted one, he wanted to be able to explore new lands, which is how he eventually met Tails on West Side Island. Also, Sonic Rush has an okay half pipe, but to play devil's advocate, you're controlling that with a stylus, so make of that what you will.
I know you probably won’t see this Johnny, but here’s MY story with Sonic 2. I had the Sonic Classic Collection on the DS as a kid, and I remember HATING not being able to get past marble zone in Sonic 1, Hydrocity in Sonic 3&K or rather Knuckles in Sonic 3 as it was called there for some reason, and FAILING the dreaded Chemical Plant water climb. But then I managed to overcome that challenge, both as Sonic, and Knuckles. Eventually getting to Wing Fortress Zone as Sonic and I kept DYING over and over again to it. But Knuckles managed to get to Death Egg Zone, and it SUCKED! I remember HATING the Death Egg Robot fight and dying to it constantly. But I eventually managed to beat it as Knuckles. It was a glorious feeling, even when I faced it in Generations and had sweet revenge. Now cut to years later when I decided to play Sonic 2 via Origins Plus late last year, I decided to go through it 100%. And with trial and error, I did it… I managed to unlock super sonic and made my inner child self dance with joy. Then I managed to beat Wing Fortress and Death Egg, with some lives lost, but I won. I finally beat a game that taunted me in my youth. 13 years later
The way you eloquently described your feelings & experience with chipping away with the game, getting over the hurdles you had in certain zones and then getting to Death Egg Zone & managing to finish Sonic 2 for the first time really mirrored much of my feelings for achieving that for the first time as a kid and that big wave of satisfaction warming me up inside that "fuck... I did it! I actually managed to beat Robotnik...". Sonic 2 wasn't my first video game and like yourself wasn't the first that I got to the ending, but it certainly was the one that made me fall in love with video games. Great review again, John. Looking forward to the rest of your Classic Sonic Revisit dude.

(He still sucks at it)
I love this game
What I loved from the updated Sonic reviews was that it went into more research of the games giving the fans insight of how the games are developed, how the characters were introduced, and also with other media along with the games such as commercials, merchandise, and the HD renditions of the games. It goes to show that you were off to a great start with the games a decade ago, only to bring them back for redemption!
Great to see this marathon, I still remember when I first subbed when your sonic 3 sgb review came out! Keep on being great johnny!
Ok. I'm surprised everyone is still like "why does sonic have a plane?? Why don't he just run everywhere?" The guy lives on an island, and can't swim. He needs the plane
He can run on water due to the physics of travelling that fast.
@@reshawshid If I were sonic, I would absolutely not want to chance running for extended periods of time on the one thing that's pretty much guaranteed to kiil me
@@reshawshid I can KINDA let it slide in the Classic games since he wasn't AS fast in the older titles.
Modern Sonic now? Doesn't really need it anymore, probably why he eventually gave it to Tails.
Dude can run across water, especially as super sonic
@@tsyumamatsuthehavenofguard32 ok, if you could run accross water and couldn't swim, would you run accross the ocean not knowing where you were going or how long it would take to get there? I know I wouldn't because I'd be scared of getting tired and drowning

Dat face speaks many volumes.
7:31 HA! Good one 😆
I like to think after the events of this game Sonic gave his plane to Tails forever because of his good help and the fact that Tails saved his life at the end
I'm loving these re-reviews of the classic games so much so far
The special stage was super hard, but I was so addicted to the game, and really like the special stages, that i basically had them memorized lol. So the tails issue that he lags behind and ends up crashing the bombs was not a problem for me, i would simple jump early to compensate. I was so addicted that I was able to get super sonic while still in emerald hill (I think there are a total of 9 special flags in that stage). Basically half my time to finish the game was spend just in the emerald hill doing stages, then i would simple zoom around the others stages in a few seconds lol
We’re is the Sonic CD Video? At this rate the sonic marathon will be over in October assuming you look at Sonic R and Sonic 4
9:00 Must be how the ghosts in Pac-Man feel when they hear an eerily similar sound lol
Which is considerably funny, considering they make that exact same sound when they just walk around. Lol (at least in the original game)
Oh hi!
How did he get the plane tho
I love the video and I love seeing Johnny's progress through his hard work on working out. Keep it up Johnny, you're doing great!
Yeah, Johnny's doing great
The way you eloquently described your feelings & experience with chipping away with the game, getting over the hurdles you had in certain zones and then getting to Death Egg Zone & managing to finish Sonic 2 for the first time really mirrored much of my feelings for achieving that for the first time as a kid and that big wave of satisfaction warming me up inside that "fuck...
After 10 years, Johnny finally has a thumbnail drawing that doesn't look uncanny as hell
This made my day. Seeing you give so much love to my favourite game of all time put a massive grin on my face.
6:56-6:57 Glad to see you kept that joke : )
With how much I watch extremely long, deeply "surgical" critiques and analyses on games, especially on Sonic game design... there always is something fun and _valuable_ about coming to your channel to get that sort of "simpler" perspective on games, their features, and their quality.
I remember I finally beat Sonic 2 back in 2013 and I was jumping for joy!
I love how SCMJ uses the specifics of how difficult the special stages are…and gives us a number on which special stage is the most difficult..instead of saying these special stages are hard and reaction based
This isn't a review, this is a loveletter to Sonic.
Seeing the kids from Home improvement shaking hands with Sonic is surreal.
I kinda thought the shaking at the end was gonna be the Metroid Alarm, to be honest. ;P
Johnny recording his Raycon ad at the gym is the type of BDE needed to motivate me to go to a gym myself.
This intro is the best ones ever. It helps us to understand why we love Johnny arfter all these years and why we are still subscribe to him. Btw. I want to thank Johnny for inspiring me to collect games of Sonic and now my brother is now inspire of collecting old games like Mario, Kirby, and even Earthbound and Mother 3.
"Whats next?"
"Sonic CD"
"Yeah fuck that im out"
*accurate response*
