- This week I had the pleasure of working an awesome Jeep Cherokee XJ. Alex Billian brought his XJ over so I could install some power leather seats that were taking up space in the basement. All we had to was tap into the connector where the factory power seat harness was supposed to be.

Dan, I love all your videos and wanted to do exactly this! After looking for leather seats like yours for more then a year ( I'm in Brooklyn, NY and they are rare in my hood ) I finally found them not too many hours drive away. The seats I got was in great shape and had already been converted to XJ brackets. I thought that was awesome, but later I found out the back recliner was still electric . I was stupid enough not to check that part before buying the seats. That said I ended up with WJ seats on XJ brackets but still WJ electronically recliner for the back part of the seat. But no electrical wiring left at all. After doing tons of googling reserch I realized it might just be worth to try to swap to mechanical for the back part as well. I found the mechanical recliner on eBay for the seats and they fit. The seats even have hidden connections to fit both electrical and mechanical! So for all you who does not want to deal with the complicaded electric part like me. This is a great option. Even the old XJ seat trim panel fits after the swap. :)
That is fantastic work! Excellent Job! Yes you may have been able to just tap power and ground to your recliner but I like what you did better. I think you can see both the manual and power bracket holes in the frame when I did my WJ seat fix. Thanks for watching! God bless!

You truly have tons of experience with these XJs. I literally LOLed to myself at 16:34 when you called it the infamous seat bolt. No matter the steps i took, both mine twisted off. LOL

Dan as always you got me out of a Jam! My XJ seats would only partially move up down but no back and fourth which I figured was the motors, but seeing you take apart switches etc gave me the courage to fully dismantle the seat switches, scrub the little copper contacts inside all the mechanism that look like a little maze game and then the plug pins for good measure. Plenty of electrical contact cleaner used too hahaha. Stuck it all back together and hey presto I finally have a fully moving drivers seat!
This is why I watch all of your videos as they come out, there's always little nuggets that could be a video in themselves hidden in each :) .

Now I know my next XJ project. Sand the contacts on the driver's side power seat switch. Only forward and back works right now. Thanks for the tips. I want those cloth seats. Never liked my cracked leather ones.
find a fresh passenger seat and swap the cracked panels out👍
@@ProjectDanH My power seat issue wasn't the switch or the motor. It's those broken plastic actuators. Time for a junkyard run. Yeah, I should have swapped out my 91 cloth seats to this 99 when I first bought it. They were much more comfortable.

Awesome seat swap. I just took apart my stock seats last weekend and removed all rust and repainted the mounting bracket. Looked at the local picknpull for leather seats to put in with no luck. Thinking about budget corbeau seats, or putting in some nice mastercraft or PRP.
Thosd would be great seats. I always wanted to do WJ seats in and XJ... Maybe beach Jeep! 😁

Great video Dan H! I just found two power seat bases for my 99XJ. I’m so stoked. However, the driver side seat plastic cover is in light gray. My plastic and interior is that nice dark agate. If you ever come across a power seat plastic guard and that dark agate, hit me up. It’s driving me crazy knowing that one of the seat covers is going to be a different color until I can find the right color. Ha ha. I can’t wait to install these over the weekend

Put power seats in my XJ using your vid. Had to replace the worm gear (available by itself) Added heated seats with the controller in what used to be the ashtray. Used the seat motor power. It has a 45 amp fuse in addition to the 10 amp fuse that came with the heaters. Just never use them at the same time, witch is very rare. Thx
nice mod! I've never activated the heaters. Any other suggestions on how to hook it up?
@@ProjectDanH the ones I got were from Amazon as a gift. (wife knows me well) there wasn't a place to put the switch so I replaced the ashtray with a usb port and the controller. There's a spot for another mod there but I haven't figured out what to put there yet. The seats I got were worm on the bottom so I replaced them with the same color. After I get my rock sliders in, I'll put in a couple of Thor handles so she can get in easier. She's not too keen on the lift.
@@ProjectDanH I used the power from the seat motors. It's a 45 amp fuse and the seats have a 10 amp fuse for itself. Controller was a tapped into a add a fuse

12 v connector is under the carpet under passenger seat on the inner right side of the bracket that seat track is bolt on to. You will need a wiring harness from the donor vehicle and 25 amp circuit breaker in slot 29 in passenger side junction box

I rescued them from an XJ about to be destroyed by the fire department. They were sitting in my basement for about a year... I figured I'd give em to Alex since his XJ was so clean. We worked out a trade for jeep parts to be named later 😁

Oh great video I might keep my power seat if I can fix it.
Would you have any idea why the front height adjustment motor makes a grinding sound unless I’m on a washboard road, then it works fine and the forward backward motor will move it forward but not backward unless I physically push the seat backward at the same time?
It may be on its way out.. Gonna try to make a motor repair vid one day

I found a nice set of wj seats and xj power seat bases for cheap. Wonder if I could just use the xj base with wj seat and keep all the power settings

I love that XJ, my favourite on the internet. Any advice for removing a snapped bolt in the rear shackle mount? got bolts from rough country and they snapped when installing new shackles and leafs.
Oh man! That completely sucks..how far in did they get before they snapped??
@@ProjectDanH it threaded in pretty deep. its all the way through to the other side when I peep through the back of the frame. taking it to a shop so they can hopefully get it out. its worth it, my XJ only has 75k on it, its a 2001 sport so im not giving up on it for a long time.

Really intuitive. Wow. Know anyone with a clean set of Tan seats? Haha. 99 XJ non power. :) drivers is worn out passengers still mint.
TAN !!! Ahhhh Tan is so rare! Here's what you do, find another tan passenger seat and use material from it to restore the rips in the driver seats. Then find a pair of power bases and you can swap the seats onto them. The manual seats and the power seats have the same exact mounting points. Now since the tan power seat trim is so rare you can use a set of the dark agate seat trim to match the two tone dash and door cards!!! (..or find what you can and paint it tan.. lol)

Nice Job. But FYI those contacts have a plating on them sandpaper will remove it and they will foul out faster. use paper card stock rough brown paper is perfect. I know I have cleaned thousands of them when I was a vending machine tech..

Those are XJ seats, Heated seats will work if you can wire them

Hey Nixon Thanks for watching! Just about every part from 97-01 XJs are interchangeable except for the cruise control buttons and the Overhead console wires. also in 2000 the XJs got coil packs.
Yes, you can swap over seats from other year XJs and also ZJs. you can fit WJ seats in too however I believe you must re use the XJ seat frame. its an east swap. just 4 13 mm nuts per seat 👍👍

Hello Dan H, I was wondering if you had a video on taking out broken bolts because I took my seats out and I had one break on me when I was taking out my drivers seat. Do you have recommendations on how to take that bolt out?

What did the passenger side come out of? I got a seat motor out of an 04 and the bracket doesn’t line up.
Everything was from my old 2001 XJ limited
Where in the fuse box does the power come from? Is it 6B (red w. blue stripe) as I have read somewhere?
the junction block? yes it's at the bottom.. it's only a 2 wire connector with 12GA black and red/blue wire. hit me up on Instagram and I'll send you a diagram

@@ProjectDanH that's crazy because the seats look identical to the WJ seats I swapped into my xj. If you are planning on swapping WJ seats into your XJ, you can simple swap the xj brackets onto the wj seat and bolt them on

So I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee that was T Boned by a dump truck... well the seats and the drive train are salvageable. I have a 91 XJ and I want to the 2002 Grand's seats in it... is that gonna work or am I gonna have to make modifications to the seat base or floor of the XJ

Dan I have some xj power seats but the bolt pattern to mount them into my 2000 Cherokee is different. yours seemed to bolt right in. Did you salvage the Bottom of the non-power seats for proper figment?
nope. direct bolt on. my 01 seats fit perfectly in the 98. they're all the same

Hey M, thanks for watching. POR 15 (paint over rust) is the best paint to stop rust! I use it alot on my old Jeeps. If you have an 89 you might need some! Lol. I love the 2 doors. Good luck with your build

I have two powers seats I like to install, but there is no wire harness so I have to make my own. Where do I tap the 12 v?
make your positive one power wire right off the battery. don't forget to put a fuse approximately 6 inches away from the battery end. then make your negative a ground and use an existing body ground near the seat. 👍
Dan my man. How are you liking the Rough Country lift on your black Beauty? You've had it on for awhile what are your thought? Thinking of the same lift.
I absolutely love it, it handles great and everything works amazing. I actually installed 2 of the RC lifts and they were both great. It was very cost effective too. Unfortunately I never installed a different brand so I have no basis for comparison

I haven't Dug into the ZJ motor and controls yet, but j will soon! 😁. Could be motor going, could be junk in the track, could be a switch on the fritz... Take a peak and see what you can find

I found a 2000 xJ limited with power seat on drivers. Seat cushions roached but are these seats rare enough for me to snag from the u pull it? Anything else I should look for on a limited? Thanks for your input
wow definitely take the seats! they can be refurbished. also take the door cards, radio bezel, switch bezel with fog light button, headlight harness in the header panel with the fog light wires. over head Console with it's wire that run to the junction block and it's mounting bracket. the infinity amp and definitely take the triangle shaped tweeter covers that's the plastic on the side view mirror.

What is 415 the full name and just what will it protect against. Have rotted out passenger floor pan to replace and need a good rust inhibitor.
POR15 is a good rust inhibiting paint.

Did u use the factory heating units? Do any other model seats bolt in to the xj
no these seats were not heated. I think a zj seat bolts in. if not then you can bolt the ZJ seat onto the XJ frame.. WJs too
@@ProjectDanH I thought that if there was a power passenger seat, then the seats were heated. According to the Jeep brochures, for 99-01 heated seats came with the power passenger seat (and that was the only way to get it.)

thanks brother! these were 2001 XJ limited seats I had stashed away. if yours are a 99 then I recommend 97-01 xj limited or classic seats. ZJs and WJ seats fit too .. just gotta use XJ frames

@@addisonbrady8737 Thanks man, I believe that all WJ and ZJ seats will fit on XJ frames ... but if your xj doesn't have power seats you will have to hook up the power for the recline function. lol. hope that helps buddy

these seats were from an 01 XJ limited. I recommend WJ and ZJ seats.. so comfy

You should have added aftermarket heated seats while you were at it. I did this on my ZJ and it was really easy.
Are those XJ leather seats?
Yes, they're factory XJ Agate leather AKA vinyl lol. We were originally planning on hooking up the OEM seat heaters but in the intrest of time the owner declined. Perhaps we will install em in a future video. 😁

I actually rescued that set from a fire department demo.. they were scheduled to drop a school bus on a beautiful XJ and cut it apart with the jaws of life. The poor thing only had a bad 3301 head. I pleaded with the chief to let me buy it but he couldn't allow it because it was donated for a tax purposes. After bothering him for 2 days he let me save the interior. 😁 Since I didn't have a project lined up for em, and they were sitting in the basement Alex and I worked a trade for parts to be named later! 🤣 Thanks for watchin man!

Dan, I have a 99 xj with manual seats. I have an opportunity to buy some leather wj powered seats. Do I have to find a set of xj powered seat frames to make this work? Can I set the seat position with a battery pack and just bolt them right up? Or, Should I punt on this and try to find some manual wj seats. Would you recommend trying this seat swap? I really need your advice, supposed to meet the seller later today and not sure if this is a good idea. Thanks
I would definitely get the WJ seats and bolt them onto your XJ frames.. you can always upgrade to XJ power frames whenever they become available. 👍
