I think replacing DRS with after burning turbo jets would be awsome, they could also replace the halo with a fighter jet bubble canopy. While they’re at it also give each car 2 sidewinder missiles to use each race, this would spice things up tremendously
😂😂 damn that's one hell of a spice up
For many drivers it'll go from "We race as one" to "We'll race only once"
If it doesnt come with a hot pink waffle maker i dont want it
Suture GPX intensifies (fyi, it’s an anime where futuristic super Formula class cars literally have two jet engines strapped to their roof)
Bro you played too much gta
I would say this cars look very cool, a lot more "streamlined" than before with some more smooth curves instead of sharp angles, I really like it and I'm very excited to see how much will the racing change.
they look disgusting. the mercedes w10 and w11 are probably the best looking f1 cars ever, and I am saying this as a ferrari fan.
@@kaustavkapur5532 I swear F1 fans are allergic to change but then change their mind after Monaco
@@BZ_-zd3ph every time things change. Only rule change I’ve seen taken positively was 2017, and that wasn’t that big of a revolution if were being honest. Just wider cars, wider tires, lower rear wings. Besides that they were almost identical to 2016
@@alexdemanche2253 the halo phenomenon is so peculiar
This is one of the ugliest car designs the FIA have approved! I'm surprised it's actually gone ahead, look like the cars from 1995 and those were ugly
i'm glad to finally see someone acknowledge that teams will still try to mess with the airflow behind their cars to make it harder to get close
TBH, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of that thinking in the Ferrari sidepod design
Kimi reading the title:”I don’t know you have to tell me”
I have a question , more so a proposal of a video idea.
Do you think DRS should be eliminated from qualifying?
DRS original purpose was introduced to improve/encourage overtaking, not to gain free tenths down a straight. I feel like removing this from qualifying will lead teams to make different set ups which could make the race a little bit more interesting. Ex: A team may use a high downforce set up for better overall pace in the race sacrificing a good qualifying. we , the audience, then can watch them fight back through the field.
These are just my thoughts though, I would love to hear what you think of a change like this
I don’t think it would be much different for qualifying. Everyone would just be a bit slower. Not much else
Good point. There is real no reason for DRS in Qualifying. 👍
I quite think the opposite. Quali is all about pushing the car to the limit, and drs makes the car go faster. I believe that it would be interesting see again the 2011-2013 qualis, where you could use drs everywhere you dared, and this led to some drivers taking corners like 130R with it open. Amazing to see.
@@thechosenone45 yes it has interesting sides. But overall DRS is an device to make boring racing unnatural exiting. It works, but thats how it is. I hope its possible to drop it if the concept works. Natural overtakes are much more enjoyable.
Actually you have a good point, I’ve never thought about this. I do think either drs should be eliminated from quali, or that it should be allowed to be used by anyone regardless of following distance
I think midfield teams and lower will still need DRS to compete in the upcoming season and beyond. It would be ideal to not have them but the truth is, DRS does bring excitement especially when a race gets tight.
they will be too far back to compete.
Every big regulation change wil actually make the gaps bigger not smaller.
@@Wappie667 yee I agree they have to be within 1 second which is to much ground to make up between a faster car and slower car just to use the drs
@@kevinstubbs2960 Thats not it, with the regulation change and the budget cap the gaps normally increase and with the cap they'll stay bigger for at least 1 season.
"We can enjoy every lap being chaos" 😂😂😂😂
2:16 would be really intresting to see this kind of data trough history. If it's still possible to find/calculate somehow, se we would see what kind of racing we could expect.

There is tons of CFD data showing how much disturbance an F1 car creates in the air flow and how much that affects various elements of the aero package for the following car. Estimations on the new cars are just estimations because nobody has publicly released models of their new cars yet, it also doesn't tell the full story because some drivers can get more out of a car in dirty air than others, we won't really know anything until a couple of races into the new season
@@DjDolHaus86 what he is saying is someone should run CFD data on classic F1 bodies from like 1967-2000 and compare to current F1.
but cars where more dominant and had more reliability issues the waulity of talent was far less aswell. to many varibles, but simply put how could losing less downforce be worse?
I think rather than 18% it will be something like 20-25% dirty air,it wont be as bad as last year since the bargeboards are gone, but lets see

The onboard Mercedes released from their filming day showed DRS in action on the W13 and it's mostly the same from what we've always known
Can't wait to here "It's lights out and away we go!" this season
They could limit DRS active time for some amount like 5 minutes and let them use at any point.
or just get rid of that DRS at all. Good all days when there wasn`t any DRS and only pure skill to overtake.
at any point in time but still in the drs zone right ?, because it would be to dangerous anywhere else
Or just use limited use DRS/pass boost like Indy/CART/Formula E
I was wondering how it would operate with the rear wings being curved.

The first race is less than a month away! I'm hyped for the new season, and I hope the regs work as intended
Since each track has its own unique challenges they should keep it for when it is needed. Also, CART and Champ Car had variations of the 'push to pass' option that was limited to a number of times per race it could be used. This could work well in F1 since there is strategy involved.

push to pass is still used in indy car to this day
F1 have this, it's called the Overtake button, it's connected to the hybrid battery system which gives them around about an 80hp increase in power from the battery's which is why when they're qualifying for example they'll do a push lap then a cool down lap to charge up the ERS system to give them full power when needed or sometimes in a race they'll be 0.600 behind but then the next few laps they drop back down to a second again to charge the battery back up and cool the tyres a little to go again.
"Party zone" is what got my like.
Best explanation just short and straightforward
DRS should not be allowed for use on back-markers. They get bule flags anyway so the DRS is not required to make passing possible. This simply gives a leading car more speed when they are typically in clean air anyway. FIA should either eliminate the DRS on back markers or eliminate the blue flags - the latter is not possible because top teams will just have their second car block the leader.
This is so cool and I love you Matt @WTF1
Idea: DRS for the first 3 laps that’s activated wherever you want. After lap 3 it’s turned off

The car is talking using it’s DRS system
I know I'm not gonna be the first to say it but I'd like a push to pass system, maybe some kind of electrical temporary boost in power, without quite as many restrictions that DRS currently has, I'd like to see what the drivers could come up with if they had the PTP available and active during the whole race with a limited amount of time to use it, and just see what happens, i think F1 needs a big shake up like this to keep the new influx of fans, they have a huge opportunity and it's gonna take something massive to captivate this new generations interest in F1

I think F1 already has it. The Overtake button.
Finally someone has done a video on this
Maybe when teams and the FIA have perfected the car and racing becomes a lot closer as expected. Maybe then can they probably trial a non DRS race in one of the sprint races to see how the cars get on?
Something that isn't usually brought up in the DRS discussion is that it adds some extra excitement in races that are restarted or in the wet, when DRS is disabled for a few laps.

@WTF1 Big question: when having trouble following in a corner, dirty air(turbulences+heat+... ?) have always been pointed as the culprit. But another phenomenon that happens when you follow another car closely is "slipstream", basically the car in front shovels the air and you have less to cut through. Dirty air in corners, slipstream on straights. But isn't slipstream working against the following driver in a corner too? Air density is lower so your aero package works less, and there, no matter what you do as long as the car in front shovels, you get less air. Or is it negligible compared to dirty air?
3:14 the editor is having too much fun, but I'm here for it 🤣🤣

Great Video!
I think we should wait till the first races are finished. If it is to easy to Overtake then it should be removed.
Only 240p 💀

As im old enough to remember the 1982 season the last season where the car were fitted with skirts , the reason they scraped ground effect car for 1983 was to improve overtaking because ground effect cars were to fast through the corners , i dont remember ground effect cars being able follow each other closely and overtake but ground effect is back again , will it work who knows the powers that be dont .
I hit that subscribe button, purely because I want DRS Zones to be renamed "PARTY ZONES"
I mean they might allow racers to use DRS in non permitted areas if it means there's a chance for a more exciting race, wouldn't be the first time the rules haven't been followed

The car cannot go full speed when drs is open? I don understand, if can't go full speed, how they overtake and close up
2:20 😂🙌🏻
here a ideia, why not give the drivers a certain amount of DRS activation thru a race??? then they could use it to close the gap to the car ahead creating more batles during a race
part of me would like it to go, but part of me also likes it.. the tense moments of a driver catching another trying to get within DRS range to finally launch an attack and lunge into a corner
Yeah but if the cars work the way the fia wants it, then they might get to the same distance before the corner just by starting closer at the beginning of the straight...

At this point the season needs to start RN C'MONNNNN!!!!!
If you look at the shots of the cars on track you can see where the rear wing splits and where the new wing end fence starts. I think there will be drs

Personally, I think more emphasis should be put on electronic boost than drs. That way it’s more up to the driver than the course as to when you can use a speed boost.

Can't wait for the start of this new era
With the wider front wings, how many more laps are we going to lose due to carbon fibre on the track?
Although the point of the new design was to get rid of catch up aids like DRS, I think it's fine to at least have it on this year's cars because if all goes well just treat it like they previously did when it was raining and say DRS disabled, or turn it on only for hard to pass tracks and maybe even quali only so people have a reason to watch quali more because the cars will be way faster than the race vs just all out which you can't do in a race
Here after Verstappen's DRS struggles in Spain 2022 happened. Was trying to figure out how those actuators seem to work, thanks WTF1!
Why are the rear wings lower than the initial showcar
Can there be something equivalent to drs but used in the curves? Like some system that temporarily increases downforce and allow overtaking. I bet that would be fun.
No.
Mega quality 👍
I highly doubt the technical changes will be enough to make cars be able to overtake on their own, just doesn't seem likely due to the cars being so long still, and tracks not being designed for them. Drs is necessary until they can make the cars dramatically shorter.
you said chaos?? well i like some chaos aaahahaah
Watch the Mercedes shakedown video, it's shown there

Ideally F1 produced cars that don't rely on DRS for good racing. If the goal of these new regulations is going to be reached successfully, DRS may even prove too powerful. This is likely going to be a weird season. But I'm all for it as long as El Plan is progressing smoothly.

The crew probably has to exercise with heavier weights since the tires are a bit heavier
1982 cars had ground effect. There was no chaos that year. The slipstream effect was significantly smaller and while it was easy to follow, it was actually quite tough to pass, as the guy on front of you always got on the throttle before you. DRS should be here to stay, forever. Some of the best races of my lifetime have happened in the past decade. Leave it as it is.

And then you will complain when the cars won't be able to overtake. The F1 fanbase is the most hypocritical fanbase in the world. You want cars to be able to overtake easier but at the same time don't want to? Doesn't make any sense
@@metro3313 I’ll repeat myself, “If the racing is close without it.” Yes, I agree with your statement, and if it makes passing extremely difficult, it should not leave the sport. I am neither for or against this change until I see the results of the new aero.
the one worry is that even if the cars themselves are better for overtaking, what's the incentive to overtake somewhere other than a DRS zone if you can just wait for a few corners and get an easier pass there
Hamilton would have been happy to pass Alonso anywhere at Hungaroring last season.
I would like to see it removed from some specific tracks first. Maybe keep it on the faster tracks with multiple long straighaways and lose it on the more curvy tracks.
The curvy tracks need it more though?
@@aaronrigg5208 Yeah, I feel like it would need to be the other way around
Just popping in to say I am now referring to DRS zones as Party Zones™️ from now on.
Also, I feel like if the racing is fine without it then get rid of it, but I still like having a zone where a “boost” can be used. Maybe something similar to Formula E where you can take a different line and gain a finite amount of push-to-pass type “boost” could be a place to start thinking?
That would feel like too much of a gimmick. Maybe just start with a certain amount of seconds of it like Indycar
If their hypothesis is correct about closer racing then I think it is fair to say that F1 is without a doubt going to be the best form of racing if not whole sport on the planet
“This yeaaaaa”
Hey who did the drawing at 1:10 would love to see more of them
Driver pushes a button on the wheel and it opens. Hehe.
In my opinion, if the cars dont need that much hassle to overtake, they should put DRS back in the shelves since this would make it a little more challenging for the drivers and more exciting
this guy is comically british. the intonation of the end of each phrase are mesmerizing.
I have to say I’m a little bit sceptical. Less dirty air means the slipstream is going to be less powerful, so even if you’re closer to the car ahead, without DRS it could still be difficult to get by. Keen to see how it all unfolds though!
I totally agree that a DRS zone should be called a party zone :D
FIA missed another opportunity to make DRS more impactful. Why won't they extent DRS detection window from 1s to like 1.5s or more for tracks that are hard to overtake? It takes next to no cost to implement yet the result would be dramatic. There's literally no reason not to at least test it on some grand prixs like they did with sprint qualifying.
Do not mean to burst people's bubbles but I saw somewhere, and it kind of makes sense, that there might be more emphasis on DRS because less dirty air also means less slipstream so the drivers might still need a boost to get them past their rivals. But I am not sure. We will have to wait until Bahrain to find out I guess.
So I guess we won't be seeing those beautiful vortices that comes out of the wing since it's not 100 a factor?
Drs is like the nitro button in NFS
i dont know why but for some reason i think that the cars will be at to extremes, either a lot harder to overtake or to easy to overtake.i dont know why
They should keep DRS and give the drivers turtle shells to throw at other drivers to make them spin out. Plus oil squirty things. If you're going to go arcade-racer, go full on. (just joking, after finding out about "fan boost" in Formula-E. now THAT is f'n arcade racer type gimmickry).
All it's missing is a comfy pillow and a nice cup holder.
I think they should just allow it everywhere. Like active aero but manually activated. Would be fun to watch
What I’d like to see is a “Green, White, Checkered” be implemented for safety cars. No race should end behind a safety car and all racers should have to win under normal racing. NASCAR fixed this already, and it’s time for F1 to catch up. Say what you want about being the “best Motorsport for technology and speed” but you keep archaic rules that allow default wins.

Is this years overhaul of the cars big enough that it could replace the top 3 teams?
I know this sounds crazy
But
I would love too see the car invert the wing that opens up too the bottom wing
Why not give a set number of drs use and allow racer/team strategist to decide where they want to use them. the leading car can only use drs to defend and drs is only usable if theyre within certain distance to chasing car like 0.5 sec or sth if unused drs ocunt will be counted down the longer the race go on. that way a chasing car can use them more if they need to catch up and the lead car can still defend if needed and bad strategy are punished
What about track lap records? I guess it'll be a while before they are broken again without DRS in quali
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up as a support
A very low power drs would probably be best for F1. Drs shouldn’t give you free overtakes, but having a less effective drs would help offset losses in dirty air
Short informational video
They can't corner at their top speed if the DRS is open, or corner at all for that matter. DRS does allows them to go at the top speed though, but in a straight line.
3:15 lol
God vid, just wanted to see the monza crash to demonstrate how bad it can become if the drs don’t close
Thing is - we're losing 18% downforce from dirty air compared to 47% last year - but we're losing more downforce overall due to the new regulations. It's like they've created the same problem in a different way
@@MrTommyboy211284 ground effect is better in faster corners. many tracks have slower corners and I can fully see the lower downforce these cars in general get pushed below the handling threshold even by that 18%. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm not as optimistic about the changes. Biggest changes will simply come from teams interpretting differently rather than the regs actually doing what they intended
@@MrTommyboy211284 you've missed the point entirely.
Downforce is about handling - it doesnt matter if it affects both drivers - the 2nd driver will still have less downforce and therefore less handling.
If that downforce goes below a certain point, the car will not be manageable.
It's a simple concept and I'm not sure why you can't understand it.
I still like drs concept it’s like nitrous like videogames so I like it and doesn’t affect me at least.
