    In my opinion they should move the DRS zones away from the braking zones, since the target is to let the drivers in equal level of speed at the end of the straights. The dirty air and slipstream were reduced (They're intrinsic, since they are a product from the wake left behind a car), so DRS still is gonna be important.

By not supporting a specific driver, or team, I get to enjoy the on track battles, no matter who comes out on top. Every hard fought wheel to wheel overtake attempt is great for me, because no matter who ends up in front, I am happy.
      The other advantage is that I get to see the good and bad driving, and not get bogged down in the tribalistic arguments over which driver should be penalised/was dangerous/deserved to win etc.

      @zak again, you are basing this ridiculous claim on the events of TWO WEEKENDS! The whole point of formula sport is that people come up with an idea of how to operate in the finals, and evolve as they gain a better understanding. With a better understanding, they learn how to correct their issues. You can tell exactly nothing about the effect of these regulation changes for at least several months of competition, and the true impact of them likely won't be seen until the 2023 season, possibly even 2024.

    I like the innovation of teams with their solutions, for example prior to DRS in the case of McLaren with the F duct (although I am of the view that some teams' implementation was dangerous such as removing a hand from the wheel to activate).
    However, when DRS was made standard with aerodynamically the same goal, it seemed too artificial to me.
    I get that they were just trying to make the best of the situation but I wouldn't miss DRS as a "standard" tool.

  • @Da_Osta
    @Da_Osta 2 роки тому +13

    If we really see that we don't need the DRS anymore in 2022, I would still keep it but make it open for everyone all the time (Like we have now in FPs and Quali). This is just free straight line speed there to be taken or not. We would see faster laptimes and also better cornering speeds. That is because the team would put on more downforce/drag on the car if they know it won't hurt them so much on the straights. Also all the teams allready developed the DRS for the new generation of cars in 2022 so it won't be that resource intensive as well.

    What F1 should do about their passing rules.
    1 - The car that is not ahead is deemed to alongside once the front wheel makes it past the rear wheel of the lead car.
    The leading car going into a corner must give a car width from the end point of the corner, or is considered at fault. The width applies to both the inside and outside of an apex, meaning once the rear car is ahead of the front cars rear wheel, the rear car also must apply to the same width when driving off the apex out of the corner.
    Once the car that is not ahead is in this position, the lead car must not take that width away until safety past the car in back.
    2. The car in the rear must be ahead prior to the apex in order for that vehicle to now be able to switch as the lead car.
    Same rules as above now apply with apex car widths.
    If the car in the rear does not get past prior to the apex, then rule 1 still applies to them and they are the lead car only needs to give a car width.
    This way, if you want to make a dive on the inside, you better know you will have to lead as well as be able to be at a slow enough speed as to not push the other off the track.
    Same with overtaking vehicles making dangerous maneuvers.
    Have all these be penalties and drivers will be much safer.

    Way it's hard to follow close in the corners are because of "dirty air". When the wings produce downforce in the corners it creates turbulence air that blow up behind the car. So as the car that follow into the corner hits the turbulence at an angle it will have less downforce compared to taking the corner in clean air. To reduce dirty air you have to reduce the downforce F1 cars produce and that makes the them unable to take any corner at high speed.

  • @Groggers96
    @Groggers96 2 роки тому

    I believe that with DRS, they should give each driver the chance to open it in one zone per lap. That way it still does the job of helping the car behind to overtake, but it also becomes a much more tactical game. For example take Bahrain: would you want to use your one DRS usage on the longest straight so you get maximum usage out of it, or would you rather use it in another shorter zone so you can get in front and defend?

      Fan cars were only dangerous because they produced cornering speed far in excess of what was safe at the time when combined with ground effect skirts, reports of them shooting junk out the back were greatly exaggerated. If they were used as the primary means of downforce production and the rules were structured to limit their effectiveness (in the same way wing regulations are currently) then they'd likely fix more problems than they caused. Dirty air would still be a minor problem but it would be far less noticeable than with today's extremely sensitive over-body aero design.
      Even if junk being fired out of them was a problem (modern tyre 'marbles' might increase the likelihood) you could simply change where the exhaust ports for the fans were venting so it was safe.

    I can see why DRS would be seen as artificial and "gimicky," but it seems that once the teams all figured out the strategy around it, it has generally accomplished its goal.

    Not a fan of DRS but I am a fan of overtaking so I could take it or leave it. I just wish they would close or open it on both cars once they are side by side, so the battle goes into the braking zone. Also, if someone gets overtaken between the detection and activation zone, don't let the leading car DRS into the distance, that really gets on my nerves.

    So here's a newbie question: with the 2022 cars improving the airflow so the following car still gets clean air for its aerodynamics, does that mean the slipstream effect is also massively reduced?

    • @benfulford3943
      @benfulford3943 2 роки тому +1

      No. The improved airflow will be mainly noticed in the corners and the following cars won't lose as much downforce through the corners as the current generation of cars. The slipstreaming affect should still work and potentially may appear stronger as a faster car can come out of the corner closer to the car in front and will get straight into the slipstream.

    I'm not a fan of DRS as just being 1 second behind doesn't mean that a driver is guaranteed to pass and DRS effectively guarantees an overtake on some circuit without some drivers (even title contenders) really having the skill to fight for position cleanly. It is a necessary evil however with the current cars but hopefully the new cars from next season onwards can make DRS a thing of the past

    Quick question as I’m new to F1, how was Hamilton able to match and catch Max up on the hard tyre while Max was on medium for most of the race? Thanks

    • @stephenroot6067
      @stephenroot6067 2 роки тому +3

      There’s many reasons, but mainly Hamilton was overall faster around the track, as well as the medium tyres losing the majority of their grip near the end of the race because Max was on them since after the first red flag (I think). The countless VSCs helped, but they still didn’t last the whole stint.

      + Also the merc engine is much faster on the straights than the Honda engine where the high rake design of the Red Bull is better on the corners. This is also why Max was gaining on sector 1 and losing out to Ham on sectors 2 and 3

      If you watched or followed the free practices, it was clear that the Mercedes cars were really struggling to turn on the soft tyres and get them into the right operating temperatures, however they were really good at switching on the hards and their race pace was excellent. If I remember correctly the fastest times Mercedes did in FP3 was on the hard, a tentch quicker than the soft.

    as to being a fan of.... look f1 is a team sport about metatactics...the newbie popstar primadonnas that call themselfs fan sometimes clearly havnt understood shit about this sport if they think its about wheel to wheel overtaking for the largest part, back in the day you had backmarkers multiple laps down...f1 and any racing is each pilot racing his own race against time, competing against the team mate and marathon wise for the drivers, on metalevels the teams compete technologically on overall performance of all team aspects, risking wierd crashes for a otherwise non consequential 'overtake' in the race is not always the best thing, cars always have issues following but its pretense to think theres no car difference with drs open, without drs there wouldnt be that much difference besides the straights being overall slower

    How far back do you have to be to take advantage of tow/slip stream? How close do you have to be before complaining of dirty air? During races they complain about dirty air preventing overtaking yet during quail they are all stepping on each other toes so they can be behind another car. Someone please explain.Thanks.

    • @2Steps
      @2Steps 2 роки тому

      Dirty air and slipstream are by and large the same thing, the slipstream being useful though on a quali lap comes from a sweetspot. The trailing drivers want the air ahead to be being pulled along by the leading driver, so there's less drag, but they also want that air to not be full of vortices which significantly lower the car's aero from being able to generate downforce. Any slipstream will mean a drop in downforce, but that useful tow sweetspot is where the reduction in drag outweighs the loss in aero and the car can perform just a bit better than it could out on it's own in static air.
