This is why some states put a cap on how much rent can be raised. California's cap ends in about 5 years. Before the cap, one landlord raised my rent 25-30% at the same time offering new tenants "move-in specials" for half of what I was paying. Also, investment companies are buying out the lower-priced housing, kicking out all the tenants for renovations, then nearly doubling the rent for those tenants to move back in.

This is why I fired my landlord and never looked back. .
It's illegal to raise rent during a lease period. So threatening to take them to court will get you that extension, and more

I always find it funny that people who parrot some variation of "America is not great," NEVER *EVER* name other countries that they think are greater.
"Greatness" does not refer to something being perfect in every way, it refers to things like stature, presence, influence, size. You can certainly argue that it's a shitty place to live for a lot of people, but you simply make yourself look childish and foolish if you pretend it cant be argued that the United States of America is not the most powerful and most influential nation that exists today.
They once increased my rent by $450...in a neighborhood that pizza places refused to deliver to. Now paying less in a better neighborhood.
The less options you have...the more they will screw you.

My lease renewal comes up in August and my rent is going up $50.
I'm pretty fortunate because I have a nice place and I know my landlord is not getting market rate from me...he could get another 1k a month easily for my place.
(he's the best landlord I've ever rented from... this is the second time I've rented from him)
If there's ever any kind of issue, an appliance problem, wasps (I'm deathly allergic) leaks, anything at all - he comes over and addresses it within 24 hours for sure.

This is so sucking. It should be s loe against them going up on rent because they feel like or because you get pay more. That should be illegal. They should go to prison for being do inhuman rent shouldn't be going up just because they want to.
Well, go find a storage and another place before it goes on your credit.
Reminds me of my own landlord that increases the rent while the appartment is getting owrse and worse because it was shitty in the first place.
I finally found another apprtment and I will do everything I can to alert the next candidates to that appartment I'm soon leaving on what a scam it is. They won't find another pigeon until I give back the keys... Sadly, after that I won't be able to save the fools that will visit this rathole.

Sign it. Then give your notice to leave. You'll have 30 or 60 days to find something else. Yes, that will be an extra $900 for one month, but you've literally bought time to look around and get moved.
Unless signing it, will contract you to fulfill a 12 month lease. That happened to me almost. I closed on a new house one week before my lease was up. They wouldn't budge and let me pay for an extra month. If I didn't sign, I would be evicted. Eviction takes 60 days so FU to the apt complex. I would be out before I was physically evicted. Most likely the costs for the eviction would fall on them.
It's against the law to do this, independently of the country your in.
The issue is, in USA, many don't know that landlords can't do that and all they need to do is fille a simply complaint with your city department

Boy, am I glad to live in this socialist hellhole where doing rent increases this steep with this kind of a timeline is illegal and compared to the US, our rent level isn't even close to that bad. Over 2k a month might be the going price for a multi room penthouse in the city center, or a big house somewhere
