    My CBT just told me something like this: a part of cognitive behavioral therapy isn't about denying and shoving away the negative emotions, it's about recognizing that it's there, not denying it's existence, and tempering it. You are human, and negative thoughts are natural, but with training you can learn to quieten your irrational thoughts with truth.

      In the original Native American legend they feed both wolves because both wolves have unique qualities that the other wolf lacks: The one can't survive without the other. The original Native American legend is about peace and harmony, not about neglect. If the "evil" wolf is starved, it just becomes angrier, more violent, resentful and envious. The goal is to feed them both, that's at least what the original story says.

    I love Sharon Salzburg and I love this Indigneous story. It contains a lot of wisdom. But I do wish that an Indigenous person had narrated this, or the animation was made in a way that did not feature Sharon, who, to my knowledge is not Indigneous, speak as this Indigenous character. To my mind, respectfully, this is not honouring the tradition so much as engaging in cultural appropriation. Were elders asked? Was permission given from the Indigenous or Native American community? These are important questions.

    THE Native American culture. The only one.

  • @cpsdesch
    @cpsdesch 5 років тому +3

    I hope the creator of this video animation was Indigenous? Regardless - with all due respect, I don't think this is an accurate Native American story - at least from how I have heard it as told to me by Indigenous Elders - it has changed significantly. Perhaps a disclaimer acknowledging there are inaccuracies and/or the story was modified for teaching purposes? Perhaps an introduction as to why this particular story is chosen? Perhaps a bit about the poster or creator of this animation? Perhaps a note to viewers that a part of Native American wisdom/philosophy is to actually take a lesson for yourself and not try to force your particular "moral of the story", "what it is or isn't" on anyone else? Native American wisdom is about non-interference when stories are told - it becomes up to the listener to take meaning/lessons away...and new ones when they hear it. I liked how one poster below did share they spent a year reflecting on this until they got the lesson. Sounds like they learned something. Anyway...while the animation is appreciated - I seriously think it needs to change to reflect a more appropriate and meaningful reflection of Native Americans. Why? Because it becomes another form of caricatur-izing and characterizing Aboriginal/Native American people. This in turn perpetuates ongoing, problematic, stereotyping and racializing from uneducated people who have not done their homework or bothered reading beyond the colonial-versed documents we call history textbooks (as taught in most schools). In addition, another answer to why: ....I read some of the comments below and it's sickening that something that was intended to be positive produced such vile comments. If anyone truly has good intentions and wants to really make an impact, make the journey to go visit Elders and other Native American people. Sit and visit. Build a relationship and learn to listen. ...and....they won't steal knowledge and make it theirs/claim its theirs or promote it as theirs for their own economic gain. Rather, they'd have the courage to redistribute that wealth to the Native Americans they gained wisdom from and would be transparent about it. It's sad to read the hateful comments below...and it's quite ignorant of those people who say Native Americans have been conquered - clearly they have never attended a ceremony or such. Just as sad are those who say there is no mindfulness within the teachings of Native American people...seems these folks are not prepared to let go of their own western-ized ideologies of what is mindfulness.

      Touché. All of this. Not only is it not a settlers story to tell, but especially to manipulate in order to further their own Christian agenda. The re-writes were horrifically racist. This video just cuts them out. But still, misattributes this to [insert vague nation that changes with each re-telling]. Westernizing a sacred, cultural Indigenous story and then claiming that's what natives believe? Colonization. Not cool.
      I don't think this video should be up at all (nor should this story, in general, be circling the internet), but at the very least, ya, they could acknowledge the history and maybe tell the true story through an Indigenous person (or with their permission). I mean, this video doesn't even ATTEMPT to give credit.

      Right Mindfulness as taught by The Buddha is explained in the Maha Satipattana Sutta. ( Translated as : " The Great Discourse on Established of Mindfulness" )
      Right Mindfulness is an integral part in the process of transformation He taught, towards Dispelling Ignorance about how the universe works, by actually paying attention to your own mind and body. The principals and the steps of this task is given in the Sutta.
      The Buddha says then to apply the result of the sample tested, to the population ... ( study the elements to identify the nature and function of the whole.)
      However to develop Right Mindfulness one must uphold Virtuous., and realise the futility of chasing after sensual desires. Purity in heart and taming the desires through Right Vision and Thinking are pre- requisites for Right Mindfulness... otherwise one won't have the urge or the courage to "take the bull by the horns"..
      The world is yet to discover the depth of Compassion and Wisdom of a Buddha....
      ALL the areas in a Path of Self Development is explained in very detail... 84,000 concepts... 1000s of alternative pathways... it's all about Overcoming Fear, guilt, lust, anger, jealousy, hatred etc in your own mind and growing positive factors like self restraint, compassion, generosity, joy, equanimity, mindfulness, concentration & wisdom.

    I have always thought that an important part of mindfulness is *_not taking sides_* in the dramas that happen in our heads. So the way the two wolves are handled in this story is pretty weird. Silly at best, and destructive at its worst. Somehow, the person, looking from his / her delusional perspective, *_chooses_* which wolf to feed. Really? How about the "red" wolf being angry is the signal of a legitimate problem, or that some of our essential needs not being met? And how about the "blue" wolf's generosity is the touchy-feely kind of thing, capricious, inefficient, and easily duped, not really helping anyone, and maybe even harming some with its "do-goodery"? *_Both "wolves" are essential to our well-being. And neither should be given too much power over us._* The key to true mindfulness is listening carefully to *_everything_* that is going on in our minds, and letting those binary conflicts sort themselves out. Otherwise it would be a kind of spiritual bigotry.
    And the fact that the person isn't fighting the "red" wolf doesn't make it any better. Ignoring the message of one side while embracing the message of the other is just as bad. We are just denying one and awarding another the badge of "This is Real". Which is one of the best ways to derail the practice.

    • @TinyShaman
      @TinyShaman 8 років тому +10

      Mr Edwards Right. "Listen to it". Just don't give it nourishment or support. That's simply a passive-aggressive way to undermine this aspect of self, treat it like some kind of backdrops of inner life, "not actual feelings", and ignore the problems behind it.
      Sure, observing without doing is an important part of practice. It allows us to avoid acting on impulse, which is especially great when it comes to aggression. But such preferential approach as shown in the video is not about mindfulness. It's about choosing your favourite flavour of bullshit. Wise and mindful people are generally sceptical about _whatever_ their egos have to offer. That's the whole point.

    • @TinyShaman
      @TinyShaman 8 років тому +2

      Mr Edwards I completely agree with you in regard to how practice works in real life. Yes, being able to recognise (and dump, if need be) the primitive energetic part of aggression, envy, anxiety, etc. is Meditation 101, sure. I guess I just found the two wolves parable a poor illustration for mindful practice. Exactly because of "the thought is not you" part. The way I see it, the most valuable discoveries await us, if we are willing to disassociate from our opinions, _especially those which we consider "right", "important", "good", and "all around amazing"_. But then again, maybe it's just me. You too have a great journey, friend!

    • @yoya4766
      @yoya4766 8 років тому +2

      +TinyShaman I agree in part about the value judgements we make. But 'dissociate' no, that is NOT mindfulness. I would put it as accepting the totality of our thoughts in any given moment. The labels of good, bad are judgements, and when we recognise our judging self, we need to accept that as well. In the end it's about realising that the thought stream takes us away from embodying the reality of this moment. Where reality is an aliveness of being, without the veil of thought warping its direct experience.

    • @TinyShaman
      @TinyShaman 8 років тому +1

      Simon Finch Well, you are basically making the same case as I am. So, I am slightly confused about the words "but" and "no" in your comment. It seems like you were arguing with some point of mine, but I don't understand which one.

    • @yoya4766
      @yoya4766 8 років тому +7

      +TinyShaman Thought I explained it clearly, but I will try again: I don't agree with the term 'dissociate'. Mediation is NOT about dissociation, detachment or regarding thoughts as unreal. These ideas are more like mental disturbance.Meditation is about accepting, the full totality of your experiences: thoughts, emotions, body sensations, feelings in any moment.I did say I agreed with most of what you wrote, which I did. But there was a deep misunderstanding in what you wrote that I wanted to point out. That said it is very common. One teacher I spoke to said thoughts are not real. Whilst it doesn't seem like much perhaps, these errors can be a block to progressing in your practise.

      @@em2106 quite a take on both youth and mental health.
      This story video is absolutely offensive. It is derived from previous versions which were rooted in racism and colonialism. These versions westernized [read: b*stardized] a sacred, cultural, Indigenous story in order to further their Christian agenda. Not only are the changes to the story racist in themselves, but then they are misattributed to [insert general native nation that changes with each retelling]. Not only was this story not a settlers to tell, but especially to manipulate in a horribly offensive way, and claim that these are the beliefs of Indigenous peoples.
      The original story feeds both the *wolves. All Indigenous cultures are different, but a common theme is that we are all connected (humans, animals, nature, sky, rocks, etc) and so, we love, respect, and nurture all. Both *wolves deserve the same respect, love, and nurture; both deserve to be fed. After all, both *wolves have something to offer and when they're both fed, they can support one another.

    I wish there were a version of the narration (which I love) that was worded so that young kids could understand and not get stumped on certain words/terms, phrases or concepts. Such as “we don’t have to be at the mercy of old ways of thinking…” the word “mercy” isn’t something most elementary school children might understand, but if it’s worded as something like “we don’t have to hold onto old ways of thinking, or old ways of behaving and acting, we can let go of those old habits and think of new ways of being…” and in place of the word “companion” substitute “steady, loyal friend”… similar to the “ninja” books on feelings, a lot of the words used are too complex for young kids, and then they fixate on that instead of the wonderful, powerful message that we’re trying to communicate.

    The full ending of the story (instead of the one with the one I feed) sounds something like this: When you feed both wolves properly, they will start helping each other instead of fighting and only then victory will be yours.

    i disagree and believe mindfulness is actually mindlessness. Just as the Ying Yang goes there must be a balance between the two, negativity can offer alot of self reflection and constructive criticism. We live in a very narcissistic world where "mindfulness" can do more harm than good, when you consider the hard truth to face that we are all addicted to short term pleasures and rewards you realize that maybe it isnt good to focus on solely the present and the things that make us feel good and that you need negative reflection to change the things you hate about yourself that you know deep down need to change. Simply giving into the world is NOT a power its giving up, it being a sheep! Focusing on the good more than the bad is not how you master life. I believe this "mindfulness" is being used to further push the masses into impulsive short term thinking.

    Wise, true, and well made. the only thing i would add is that being mindful may not be being positive, and i think what you think could contribute greatly to what you get. it's sort of being 'actively mindful'. anyway, good job!

    Herman Hesse the writer of such classics as Siddhartha, had a recurring theme of the 'wolf' (the side of us which we perceive to be abhorent) in his books. It appears as a dark shadow not accepted. That's why i like this interpretation of acceptance.

    Unless you are kinder than this to the angry wolf it will find a way to steal the food. Choosing sides does not resolve conflict (unless you intend to fight to the bitter end). It's a useful metaphor only in very simplistic terms.

    Makes me think about balance as well as yin and yang. We may never lose our demons, but we should never lose our angels. We only learn to live above the demons while living under our angels. The angels represent God. While the demons represent the devil. Great video. Meditation is so good. No wonder the shaolin monks are geniuses of it all. Yin and yang. Get it? Awesome.
