jeremy gouacide I wouldn’t say it isn’t a horror. It’s not necessary “scary” but it still has characteristics of a horror. It leaves the watcher in the dark most the time and has some gore elements to keep you uneasy. I would label it a psycho thriller which could fall under the general genre of horror.

It’s mentioned in AnimeLab, you know how there are categories at the bottom of the description
It’s says , “horror” , but genuinely I don’t think it’s scary , it’s the mysteries and really really really good cliffhangers are what makes in category , “horror”.

It's children who can die at anytime that's horror, just because something isn't scary doesn't mean it's not horror. People have different fears, someone whose afraid of mascots might not be bothered at all by gory films.

Aw, I'm a bit disappointed there wasn't a slightly deeper dive in Shigeru Mizuki's work beyond the mention of Gegege no Kitaro. He is celebrated in Japan not just for his work in manga/anime, but as a scholar for Japanese folklore and was pretty much responsible for preserving those works after Imperial rule. It may not have been 100% related but... His influence deserves more than just a passing mention. Still a great video!!

    - Boogiepop Phantom (2000)

Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue is one of my all-time favorite anime movies of ANY genre!
And I've got to know, did you guys actually make it through any of the more "extreme" hentai-horror stuff like Urotsukidoji?

These anime that I've seen also have horror elements: 3x3 Eyes OVA, Queen Millennia, Jyu Oh Sei, Blue Seed, Psycho Diver (Soul Siren), Metropolis (to some extent), and mentioned in the video the list goes on.

The Enigma of Amigara Fault was horrifying when I first read it a year or two ago and it still makes my heat beat faster just thinking about it.

I remember reading 'The Enigma of Amigara Fault' way back when, and another manga of his about.. body parts under the floorboards or something? Hot damn were they spooky.
And while I'm not really big on horror manga or anime, I really liked Higurashi, the scene with the girl + her head + the knife is bone chilling with the reaction from the other girl. Hell, that whole anime was. And the manhwa 'Priest' was an awesome read back in my high school days. A friend of mine bought most of it, it had some serious gore.

My favorite anime horror is 1989’s Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma.
I also love Made in Abyss, that anime is super disturbing

Made in Abyss honestly with it's horrifying implications and uh, things that happen later on. Also, maybe Blood+? I remember finding it grotesque back in the day. Ultimately I think that's the biggest thing with anime - that it ultimately relies on gore & body horror over all other forms thus far.

Great list" But you missed "Made in abyss". One of the best psychological/adventure horror shows anime has to offer.

I’m not that great with normal jump scare horror, but I do absolutely love psychological horror😆 The Promised Neverland was amazing though😁

Sorry if this isnt related to anime, but I have to agree that Hereditary is one of the most horryifing movie I have ever seen, I had to close my eyes at the ending, the studio is very talented. (Also Junji ito is amazing, cant wait for his new show.)
