I worked for Empire for 5 years. You have a better chance getting on with Fedex working at a major Airline. Yeah they say there’s a guaranteed interview but it’s a separate interview compared with regular candidates just to check the box off. A very and I mean very small margin of people get to Fedex from these Feeder airlines. In fact for every new hire pilot at one of his feeders Fedex has to pay to train so they would be cannibalizing themselves if they took a pilot from the feeder. My experience with intermingling with most Fedex pilots when I was working for Empire was they looked down at “feeder trash“. Disclosures I never wanted to go to fedex nor did I try to interview. I’ve since moved one through a regional and now a major airline.
I flew Caravans for 15 years. It was a good career. There historically has been very little flow from the feeders to the mainline. The mainline pilots were nice enough to us at the terminal, but as a corporation, I don't think the expertise of the feeder pilots was appreciated. Flying Caravans in Dec Jan Feb Mar in the Northeast (Wiggins) in Syracuse, Buffalo, State College, Newark requires alot of skill. To this day, the feeders were the most reliable, mission competent organization (including the military) that I have ever been involved with.

There is absolutely nothing glamorous about it. You fly very old, marginally maintained aircraft with “steam” gauges, often in the middle of the night, with no autopilot. Does it have a place in building an aviation career? Absolutely. I reached the pinnacle of my aviation skills as a Metro III pilot flying single pilot, 5 legs a night w/o an autopilot. But in reality, feeder freight is a stepping stone to the commuter industry, not a direct path to FedEx, UPS, or the Majors. Had I not left for a commuter airline based in ORD and become a Captain and instructor, FedEx would have never hired me. There are lots of paths to FedEx. Some faster than others. If someone has an opportunity to fly feeder freight, great. Do it for about a year. Log some turbine and/or multi engine time. Sharpen your IFR skills. Then run (don’t walk) to the commuters. You’ll build flight time faster and get paid substantially more. Some are even offering signing bonuses. And more importantly, you’ll be flying jets with glass cockpits, flight management computers, and some with HUDs- making you far more marketable than your feeder freight brethren. My 2 cents. Trying to go from Engineering to Flying professionally. The one key thing I am concerned about is the pay. I am hoping the pay for us qualified pilots have gone up since this video.
I earned my PPL at 19 and instrument rating at 20. Today i'm 50 years-old and working to finish my commercial cert, just never had reason to finish it over all of these years. I currently fly (rent) a few times every month and enjoy it, was wondering if there are part-time flying opportunities in cargo. I have a career as a programmer and enjoy that, too, so not sure i'd wnat to make a complete career change, but flying on a more serious level does appeal to me. I'd think that with the current pilot shortage that pilots in my age group would and could be useful to fill some needs even it it's just on a part-time basis. Any thoughts about this?
Hey Ave, thanks for your question! My honest, best advice is to keep aviation fun and don't switch careers. Use your current career to pay for the fun of flying. I know pilots in their 30's trying to make the switch and it is incredibly difficult for them. If you still want to get your commercial, I would say try to pick up "every now and then" work as a pilot. Other than that, enjoy flying and use it as an escape from "work." 😎
I flew cargo, In a 402 twin for like 6 years. I loved it :) Caravan I flew too. Didn’t like it as much. It’s best to just CFI until you can be PIC. It’s only like 1200 hours. When I did my airline interview they asked about how many hours dual I’d given. It was about the only thing they cared about. Don’t skip being a CFI guys!!!! It will catch up with you. I made 108k a year flying 402 cargo. What’s this 42? McDonald’s pays 42k a year. Literally.
Literally 😂 can’t justify going over 150k in debt for hours and certifications if starting pay is already below rent requirements. Rent is one those things that 27 years old like me have seen go up constantly never down so if you looking long term careers make sure it can afford you renting a 3,000 dollar tiny house built in the 60s because that’s the only America Gen Z knows.

Nope. You could have a degree in underwater basket weaving or gender studies or whatever other worthless degree they can invent. College degree is merely a check box: good, you have one kind of thing. What it’s in doesn’t matter.
Hi CPIC, appreciated the video since i am currently looking into this. Recently turned 42, but have been a comm.instru, both single, multi, and single complex add on when i was around 23 ish, of age at the time, but ran out of money, and 911 happen which caused a hiring freeze all over the place. Ended up switching careers to IT, make pretty decent money yea, but its not a top passion of mine, flying is. I recently looking into a univ which offers pre- atp with limitations upon course degree completion, i am looking into completing my degree program as well, which too ran of funds at the time. Realistically, i am more concerned with aging out, and looking at one of the Air Feeder services which builds you up for FedEx, would this be an issue if by chance you have knowledge of this? If you want to fly cargo, you can certainly do it for your career with a feeder. Both Mountain Air Cargo and Empire encourage staying with them flying the Caravans, or the ATRs. Is a pilots life for me? :-) So I’m 45, always wanted to be a pilot. USAF Vet (non-pilot, E&E). Difficult to know what to expect if I make a career change now (currently a corp process engineer). I’m going to guess starting salary would be way below minimum required to sustain current lifestyle much less have needed income throughout all training. So am I too late to the game, probably, but would entertain a conversation so I can come to a conclusion as to if I should cross this off my list of life’s wishes or make this dream happen.
Hey Christopher. My best answer to you is I believe you will still get a ton of enjoyment out of flying for fun, rather than work. If you want to be a career pilot it might be difficult at this stage and you’ll burn out quickly. If you have a good paying career, use that to fund your dream and fly for yourself, whenever you want. It’s way more rewarding than being told when and where to fly.
I’m 42 and a CFI…working on CFII w/900 hours. Marine veteran. I have a good career in construction and make good $. To me, it’s completely worth it. By the time I reach ATP mins, I’ll have 22 years of flying. I will likely take a pay cut the first 2 years going to the regionals, but the pay is so good right now, that I don’t really care about the cut because long term, I’ll be way way ahead of where I am currently. The contract pilot and part 135 world is paying really well right now too. There are a lot of opportunities to make good money in aviation.

Training to be a pilot is really hard very expensive. It is draining and takes a lot of study time, focus, and sacrifice. It is going to be well worth it though. I am 21 and a student pilot it’s a ton of fun when you are flying but on the ground it can be painful. Good luck to your fiancé if he isn’t too old I highly recommend a job as a pilot it is paying great with overtime pilots are making over 500k a year.
I REALLY appreciate the video and information. So, you mentioned "achieve your dream," what would be the "average" cargo pilot's goal? I've been contemplating between airline and cargo (married man and I'm currently in 4-year university for flight) and cargo seems the way to go for me (I live near a metropolitan city, but I know it's where the company requires bodies). The scheduling doesn't bother me because I have never worked a job that was weekends/holidays off, it's more for my wife so more questions below. =D I keep hearing that night scheduling is most common for cargo which is a turn-off along with extended scheduling (1-2 weeks no days off), would you say that is true (I know you mentioned the split shifts and weekends off).
So if you wanted to apply to empire or Mac you still need to go to a flight school before hand, or will they provide you with the training to get your license and everything ?
I worked for express as a ramp agent, dangerous goods agent and swing driver. They employ basically 2 different types of pilot's you have the main pilot's that fly the jet planes. And they higher sub contract pilot's to fly the smaller Cessna prop planes.
Cool man I didn't mean to diss on your channel just providing what limited knowledge of what I know that may help some but basically really what I know.. is you would apply through the FedEx website like any other position and of course you have to meet qualifications etc. And like you said you can do some things that FedEx likes to see and helps in the interview selection process. Most of the pilot's I knew were retired airforce and marine pilot's and some that came over from commercial airlines. The pilot's are treated well limo service to hotels drinks and crew meals and coffee. Few trips per day but FedEx owns the night sky you most likely will be flying overnight. But like I said they also sub contract the smaller Cessna pilot's.
@@CommercialPIC commit to safety! Its soo important and a huge amount of entrust between the customer and the carrier the carrier and markings and transparency of what's being shipped. Then the responsibility of the driver to secure the cargo to limit damage and contamination. Then the handlers job to load containers properly to weight and limitation of movement. The dg agent to ensure dangerous materials are packaged and placed and secured properly. Sometimes the issue of co2 by dry ice and a pilot's oxygen in a cabin can be an issue. The ramp crew in securing the containers properly to ensure no movement and damage to the aircraft. As a pilot you are ensuring your safety and your flight Crew and any potental bystanders safety to every one of the prior mentioned individuals. It was an honor to serve thanks for what you do.
Mid 30’s, currently in instrument training. No it’s not too late, so hurry up!! Oldest guy at my college flight school is late 40’s. My college health professor was a technician and decided to become a doctor at 50. I met him at 70 and the dude was one of the best doctors I’ve ever met. Airlines have an age cap tho

Another question are the shifts you mentioned fixed from the beginning or can they be all over the place, do you finish like 10 am sharp or can it drag for several hours due to unloading and other airport overhead logistics work ?

45k after investing all that money is insane! I make more than that doing ride share driving. I made 45k welding and couldn’t afford to rent my own house in Atlanta. Geez I want to be a pilot but scrapping together 15k for a private license then probably another 150k for those hours and ratings doesn’t seem worth it if starting pay is almost 3 times lower than average income requirements to get a mortgage on a cheaply built middle class home

Hey John, yeah it is certainly possible. It's all up to the company you work for. Many companies pay for your ATP while you continue to build hours with them. However, it is rare to be an airline pilot without an ATP. You may find that in the charter/corporate world though. All depends.
Wonder why the 2 year degree is a mandatory thing. If I get a degree in pottery that makes me eligible compared to someone who doesn't have that, huh? Can they really afford to be that picky? Getting the hours and licencing is expensive as it is. And you want to tack on another 50k as a hiring preference? No wonder there's a massive pilot shortage. They're about to kill off the industry with this kind of poor decision making.
Agreed, just turned 25 and I've been doing research on the process to get to a major airline. It's a major time AND money commitment by itself, before even getting to the degree they'd prefer you to have

I have type 2 diabetes and I am learning to fly. You will need a special issuance from the FAA. You will have to prove you have your diabetes under control. I hope this helps.
Get on with atlas, or mesa and flow into their dhl 737s… you will be much more hireable for fed ex or ups if you have a 737 type rating than a bunch of single engine turbo-prop time.
With the ongoing pilot shortage, would FedEx or any other notable air cargo carrier consider military service (six years, army combat arms in my case) or other relevant work experience (say, a 4-year trades apprenticeship, boilermaker in my case) equivalent to the four year degree? I'd love to fly a trijet someday, but FedEx and UPS are the only major carriers with any notable MD-11 fleet as of today, and they're probably on their way out. Just trying to find an honest answer, it's okay if the answer isn't nice.

Disagree with this video. Part 135 time and turboprop time is less valuable than jet time. If you can get Multiengine jet time in 121, that is more valuable to FedEx.

Well, I myself am not at FedEx because I have chosen to fly as a contractor rather than for a company. However, I have been in the cargo world as a pilot and have been able to gather this information to help other pilots go this route. Thanks for being here George!

Commercial Pilot in Command, do you want your channel to grow to the highest level with a rather huge audience? If so, perhaps you should avoid at all cost the extra non-sense talking. You need to focus on the subject of flying, not on other businesses within your presentations. You can always do all that at the end of your focussed presentations. Pay seems a little low for today's current market. Did they increase the pay by now to stay competitive with other employers?
I make 78k with a 2yr nursing degree. Crazy how pilots have to grovel in the mud to get a good job.

Not by much. First year pay is usually low to compensate for the training costs.
The best multi engine pilots. Cargo Pilots. No helper or AP needed. No wimps accepted.

Nope. You could have a degree in underwater basket weaving or gender studies or whatever other worthless degree they can invent. College degree is merely a check box: good, you have one kind of thing. What it’s in doesn’t matter.
So how do I become a pilot for one of those two pathway companies? Am I able to do it right out of school with my 250 hours?
You’ve got to get 1200- 1500 hours first

Hi CPIC, appreciated the video since i am currently looking into this. Recently turned 42, but have been a comm.instru, both single, multi, and single complex add on when i was around 23 ish, of age at the time, but ran out of money, and 911 happen which caused a hiring freeze all over the place. Ended up switching careers to IT, make pretty decent money yea, but its not a top passion of mine, flying is. I recently looking into a univ which offers pre- atp with limitations upon course degree completion, i am looking into completing my degree program as well, which too ran of funds at the time. Realistically, i am more concerned with aging out, and looking at one of the Air Feeder services which builds you up for FedEx, would this be an issue if by chance you have knowledge of this? Thanks and appreciate your response.
Hey Ser Ver, thanks for being here! Being a few years in age behind you, I would certainly say aging out is a reality for making it all the way to FedEx. If you want to fly cargo, you can certainly do it for your career with a feeder. Both Mountain Air Cargo and Empire encourage staying with them flying the Caravans, or the ATRs. So I’m 45, always wanted to be a pilot. USAF Vet (non-pilot, E&E). Difficult to know what to expect if I make a career change now (currently a corp process engineer). I’m going to guess starting salary would be way below minimum required to sustain current lifestyle much less have needed income throughout all training.
So am I too late to the game, probably, but would entertain a conversation so I can come to a conclusion as to if I should cross this off my list of life’s wishes or make this dream happen.
Hey Christopher. My best answer to you is I believe you will still get a ton of enjoyment out of flying for fun, rather than work. If you want to be a career pilot it might be difficult at this stage and you’ll burn out quickly. If you have a good paying career, use that to fund your dream and fly for yourself, whenever you want. It’s way more rewarding than being told when and where to fly.
I’m 42 and a CFI…working on CFII w/900 hours. Marine veteran. I have a good career in construction and make good $. To me, it’s completely worth it. By the time I reach ATP mins, I’ll have 22 years of flying. I will likely take a pay cut the first 2 years going to the regionals, but the pay is so good right now, that I don’t really care about the cut because long term, I’ll be way way ahead of where I am currently.
The contract pilot and part 135 world is paying really well right now too. There are a lot of opportunities to make good money in aviation.
What company did you use to have your resume professionaly written?

How easy is it to go from FedEx express driver position to go to the training school and start a career as a pilot? My fiancé is looking into this!
Training to be a pilot is really hard very expensive. It is draining and takes a lot of study time, focus, and sacrifice. It is going to be well worth it though. I am 21 and a student pilot it’s a ton of fun when you are flying but on the ground it can be painful. Good luck to your fiancé if he isn’t too old I highly recommend a job as a pilot it is paying great with overtime pilots are making over 500k a year.
Nothing about becoming a pilot is easy, but it is doable if you have a passion for it.

So, you mentioned "achieve your dream," what would be the "average" cargo pilot's goal? I've been contemplating between airline and cargo (married man and I'm currently in 4-year university for flight) and cargo seems the way to go for me (I live near a metropolitan city, but I know it's where the company requires bodies).
The scheduling doesn't bother me because I have never worked a job that was weekends/holidays off, it's more for my wife so more questions below. =D
I keep hearing that night scheduling is most common for cargo which is a turn-off along with extended scheduling (1-2 weeks no days off), would you say that is true (I know you mentioned the split shifts and weekends off).

So if you wanted to apply to empire or Mac you still need to go to a flight school before hand, or will they provide you with the training to get your license and everything ?
Additionally when getting assigned a home station do you have any choice in that?
Hey Jonathan, you would have to be licensed as a Commercial Pilot first before they consider you. And yes, you get to choose your home base.
I worked for express as a ramp agent, dangerous goods agent and swing driver. They employ basically 2 different types of pilot's you have the main pilot's that fly the jet planes. And they higher sub contract pilot's to fly the smaller Cessna prop planes.

Cool man I didn't mean to diss on your channel just providing what limited knowledge of what I know that may help some but basically really what I know.. is you would apply through the FedEx website like any other position and of course you have to meet qualifications etc. And like you said you can do some things that FedEx likes to see and helps in the interview selection process. Most of the pilot's I knew were retired airforce and marine pilot's and some that came over from commercial airlines. The pilot's are treated well limo service to hotels drinks and crew meals and coffee. Few trips per day but FedEx owns the night sky you most likely will be flying overnight. But like I said they also sub contract the smaller Cessna pilot's.
@@CommercialPIC commit to safety! Its soo important and a huge amount of entrust between the customer and the carrier the carrier and markings and transparency of what's being shipped. Then the responsibility of the driver to secure the cargo to limit damage and contamination. Then the handlers job to load containers properly to weight and limitation of movement. The dg agent to ensure dangerous materials are packaged and placed and secured properly. Sometimes the issue of co2 by dry ice and a pilot's oxygen in a cabin can be an issue. The ramp crew in securing the containers properly to ensure no movement and damage to the aircraft. As a pilot you are ensuring your safety and your flight Crew and any potental bystanders safety to every one of the prior mentioned individuals. It was an honor to serve thanks for what you do.

Is it too late for me in my early 30s to start flying from the beginning to one day being a 777 cargo pilot?
Mid 30’s, currently in instrument training. No it’s not too late, so hurry up!! Oldest guy at my college flight school is late 40’s. My college health professor was a technician and decided to become a doctor at 50. I met him at 70 and the dude was one of the best doctors I’ve ever met. Airlines have an age cap tho
How many days a week do you typically work ?
The job is 5 days a week with the weekends off. Can't beat it in Aviation

Another question are the shifts you mentioned fixed from the beginning or can they be all over the place, do you finish like 10 am sharp or can it drag for several hours due to unloading and other airport overhead logistics work ?

45k after investing all that money is insane! I make more than that doing ride share driving. I made 45k welding and couldn’t afford to rent my own house in Atlanta. Geez I want to be a pilot but scrapping together 15k for a private license then probably another 150k for those hours and ratings doesn’t seem worth it if starting pay is almost 3 times lower than average income requirements to get a mortgage on a cheaply built middle class home

I wanted to be part of aviation someday I just want to ask if I can be a Cargo pilot or Charter pilot while holding my CPL/IR to build flight hours and save money for taking my ATP license? Also is there a chance that I can be a commercial airline pilot with a commercial pilot license, type rating, instrument rating, and multi-engine instrument rating? Hey John, yeah it is certainly possible. It's all up to the company you work for. Many companies pay for your ATP while you continue to build hours with them. However, it is rare to be an airline pilot without an ATP. You may find that in the charter/corporate world though. All depends.

Agreed, just turned 25 and I've been doing research on the process to get to a major airline. It's a major time AND money commitment by itself, before even getting to the degree they'd prefer you to have

Get on with atlas, or mesa and flow into their dhl 737s… you will be much more hireable for fed ex or ups if you have a 737 type rating than a bunch of single engine turbo-prop time.
You will also need a four year BS degree to qualify for the FedEx Purple Runway program.

With the ongoing pilot shortage, would FedEx or any other notable air cargo carrier consider military service (six years, army combat arms in my case) or other relevant work experience (say, a 4-year trades apprenticeship, boilermaker in my case) equivalent to the four year degree? I'd love to fly a trijet someday, but FedEx and UPS are the only major carriers with any notable MD-11 fleet as of today, and they're probably on their way out. Just trying to find an honest answer, it's okay if the answer isn't nice.

Disagree with this video. Part 135 time and turboprop time is less valuable than jet time. If you can get Multiengine jet time in 121, that is more valuable to FedEx.

Thank for stopping by John. The cargo company I worked is U.S based and did allow pilots to have beards because we were at altitudes operating less than supplemental O2 requirements.

Well, I myself am not at FedEx because I have chosen to fly as a contractor rather than for a company. However, I have been in the cargo world as a pilot and have been able to gather this information to help other pilots go this route. Thanks for being here George!

Commercial Pilot in Command, do you want your channel to grow to the highest level with a rather huge audience? If so, perhaps you should avoid at all cost the extra non-sense talking. You need to focus on the subject of flying, not on other businesses within your presentations. You can always do all that at the end of your focussed presentations.
