I love this video! Such a great interview. I'm 34, going through a divorce and working with the FAA to get my 1st class medical. Being a single mom, chasing this dream of becoming a pilot, its so helpful for me to see how others achieved this goal!
I know someone who was in the same situation, late 20's I think, who decided to go to school and become a pilot, and along the way met her next hubby. It's a lot of fun following her exploits on FB. Also, she takes her daughter with her as much as she can, and they both love it.
One of my brother's forwarded this video to me. I'm currently an aerial siteseeing tour pilot out of Los Angeles with 600 hrs total. I would like to a position like this for about a solid year before moving on to Part 121 Great video Trent🙏🏿✈️✈️✈️🙏🏿
As a pretty new aerial survey pilot myself, I’d like to add that some companies will hire you with 200 hours if you are willing to put in some time (6months-a year) operating the camera systems. Then they transition you to the pilot seat. Might be a better option for people who aren’t on a time crunch.
@@trent_dyrsmid he’s right, type in aerial survey pilot jobs in google and you’ll find several! Depending on where you live there should be plenty. I’d start with vexcel or dewberry.

You’ve gotta do something for the rest of your life. I feel blessed beyond measure that I get to live the dream. If it lasts a year or 10 I’ll be glad I did it. BTW, the Airlines are the only ones beholden to the 65 mando retirement. I’ve bumped into pilots much older who are still doing it because they love it.
I wanted to take a second to compliment your interviewing skill. Great job getting the information out of your guest. And thanks to him for doing this interview.
Always apply early, even though you don’t have 1200-1500 hours. It shows your interest, and then you update your application with new logged hours, each couple of months.
There seems to be a popular comment that I’d like to address. The 65 year old mandatory retirement age is ONLY applicable to the 121 airlines. You can fly corporate, fractional - NetJets, XO Jets et al, survey, chief pilot, CFI and the multitude of unknown gigs I’ve run across for as long as you can keep a first class medical. Do what you love and you won’t work a day in your life.
As a 48 year old Private Pilot Student with the goal being an Airline Pilot as soon as possible I found this interview very informative and inspiring. I am currently looking at ways to build hours once I get certificated and enjoy hearing alternative ways of doing this other than CFI.
Always good to see alternatives to the standard CFI route. One observation I have had is that pipeline flying takes a bit more maturity and autonomy than CFIs. It’s a job that requires you to have a high situational awareness index. So definitely not for the CFI who likes to Snapchat photos on every flight. Good interview.
Trent, bravo sir… I’ve been subscribed since before you went to Ohio and I didn’t get a chance to leave a comment for your “channel direction” video yet. This is exactly what the Fly with Trent channel means to me. Flying footage is cool, seeing your CFI rides are also interesting, but most of all I’m here to watch Trent go from the “can a 50 year old be a commercial pilot” guy to the “SkyWest Captain” guy. You sir, are the channel and your story is the plot. Interviews with guys like Joe and all the other people like us trying to make this midlife career change are fascinating and so helpful. I love the channel, I love your passion for aviation and I thank you for shining such a bright light on this movement. Keep the blue side up sir and keep making this awesome content. Can’t wait to watch the “rest of the story.”
Thank you for this video! I have been considering options outside of CFI, or potentially after some work as a CFI, and I had no ideal that survey work could be so advantageous. Really appreciate the insight.
I wouldn’t mind doing it now… I was prior military, I’m fixed wing and helicopter rated with enough time to go to the airlines, but would rather do this.
I know a young guy who graduated high school in 2015, did the 2-yr aviation program at our local community college, and started instructing for that college. He picked up extra hours over the summer recess as a co-pilot flying a corporate King Air then moved to Texas and flew survey work for about 6 months. He knocked out tons of hours flying almost every day and now, in his late 20s, has been with a Delta regional carrier for about two years. The aviation world is his oyster. That survey flying made all the difference.
A friend of mine turned 21 in December, got hired at a regional in Jan. He did all his training part 61, then CFI at the same aero club to build hours, got his 1500 in November. Probably the cheapest way to get it done, about 50K for all his training and hours.
Fantastic interview Trent. Tons of great info. I really appreciate you investing your time in tracking good people down and sharing what you learn. Good luck Joe. Thanks for sharing your experience. I think you will be an awesome fit with SkyWest. Ben
Very interesting, I haven't considered survey as part of my path but after this video I will. The full time schedule is definitely not for me as I'm not a bachelorette haha. Love the idea of 30 on 30 off for part time CFI maybe. Thanks for another good video.👍🏻
Appreciate the time you're putting into this channel and this is a great guest. His testimony sounds familiar because I was one of the few that got my certificates and discovered that I didn't want to do CFI work. This covers that scenario and it's a rare discussion to find.
Trent, thanks for another helpful video. A lot to consider here. I just passed my private checkride a few weeks back so this is valuable info going forward!

Trent, Part 107 Pilot here. 65 Hours on a commercial DJI m300 with LIDAR. Going through ground school as I speak. sounds like I still need to get my CFI and double dip with a Survey company.

I just heard recently that my flight school isn’t even promising a CFI job after completing the CFI initial training with them. So I figure what’s the point but great video. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe I missed it but are there survey jobs with a 7 on 7 off or a 30 on 30 off schedule? I’ve seen videos where people stated they work 7 days a week with no time off for about six months. I will be looking for a survey job around October.
This is great! I’m really curious about the time-building phase. Would love to hear how it’s going for you as a CFI, and if you end up trying the survey hybrid. Also, could you tell us why you picked Sky West? What are the characteristics you were looking for in an airline, and how competitive is each airline? Keep up the great work! You’re changing my life!
I chose Skywest for the following 3 reasons: 1) they have a base in my home town 2) They have over 30 bases and are a major player 3) They don’t have a history of furloughs like other regionals As for other regionals, I never looked at any because I want to live in base.
You can log safety pilot if one of you is under the “hood” or wearing view limiting goggles. A quick read of the FAR/AIM will show that you can both log everything but taxi, take off and landing as long as one of you is performing this safety pilot role.
Thanks for the video! Quick question - It was mentioned that he was/is flying a Caravan for one of the survey jobs.... Did he have to have experience in that type before being hired or did they facilitate any training for him?
Great video! I didn't quite get what he meant when he said he was getting his CFI and decided "this wasn't for me". Initially I thought he meant that going the route towards flying for passenger airlines, but then he said he applied with a passenger airline, so ... what is it he did not want to continue doing? Flight instruction? Is that what everybody expects or wants to build hours? I'm semi-retired and too old to fly passengers even if I wanted to. I'd like to make some money to help offset my costs, but not necessarily as a CFI. I'm not looking for another career, but something to keep busy, make money, and have fun at the same time. Maybe you can find some old farts who are doing that and interview them? 🙂
During CFI training i got to take a look at the daily life i could expect. Long hours at the airport only to log a 1.8, horrible pay, treated like the sacrificial pawn by the school… As a man in my 50s I really didn’t want to work for some 22 year old scheduler begging for hours for the next 2 years. Survey work gives me complete autonomy. Just a better fit for me.
@@taatrsahh, that makes sense now. Thanks. Surveying seems like a great option for some folks. Driving for Uber one night, I picked up a guy at the Four Seasons north of Phoenix. I asked him, "how is it that people can have a private jet and their own pilots and fly all around the world and stay in the best hotels?" He said, "Trust Fund Babies." I asked him how he likes it, and he hesitated ... he loves flying and the money was GREAT, but he basically worked on-call and had to pick up and leave at a moment's notice and may not come home for a month. He said if he ever said "No" they'd have a replacement within a day and he'd never get called again. It cost him his marriage, tho. Damn trade-offs, eh?
@@TheSchwartzIsWithYouToday not a trade off I”m willing to make. Every job has its pluses and minuses. There are many options for a pilot with hours and experience. Find the one you like
Interview a low time pilot thattows banners. Must be a cupcake job flying up and down the beach checking out the sunbathers on the shore and dolphins in the water, large pizza and 2 liter Coke in the passenger seat 😅
Loved flying banners. But did watch 2 planes crash, 1 pilot dying. The tow rope wrapped around the tail wheel when the tail hook bounced off the ground. When he hooked the banner it yanked the rudder full over. There was no time to recover.
Are you asking me or Joe? If me, my answer is that I don’t have a boss because I’m an independent CFI and therefore I can do whatever I want with my UA-cam channel.

I asked him how he likes it, and he hesitated ... he loves flying and the money was GREAT, but he basically worked on-call and had to pick up and leave at a moment's notice and may not come home for a month.
Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment! I read every commemt personally 🙌
How does it get better than that?
✈️
Loved flying banners. But did watch 2 planes crash, 1 pilot dying. The tow rope wrapped around the tail wheel when the tail hook bounced off the ground. When he hooked the banner it yanked the rudder full over. There was no time to recover.
Yikes.
I've noticed these flights randomly stalking flight aware! Haha
🙌🙌
Kinda curious.
Where are ya working these days? Is your employer cool with your UA-cam channel?
Any cool stories?
Are you asking me or Joe? If me, my answer is that I don’t have a boss because I’m an independent CFI and therefore I can do whatever I want with my UA-cam channel.
👍
