Wow Tawra, you've gone above and beyond on this one, and yet there's still more to come. Thank you so much for doing this! What I REALLY can't wait to see is how your homemade detergent works!!
My husband is a farmer. He gets mud, grass, grease, oil on his coveralls. I found spraying a mix of Lestoil, Dawn and water on stains helps so much prior to washing. I've done a LOT of dirty laundry over 40 years of farming.
I appreciate you so much for doing this laundry pod test. You went to a lot of time, work and cost to bring this to us. Saying “Thank You” does not do justice to this video.
Not only do the laundry soap pods fail us in cleaning, but the new style of washing machines fail in getting the clothes clean too. Very little water, no agitators!
Looks like your theory that you can get laundry just as clean if you skip the laundry soap and use only hot water may not be too far off. I am really surprised these detergents cant even get out plain old dirt. I'll be interested to see how the other detergents go. Thanks for doing all this work for the betterment if mankind!
Yes this test is definitely worth it! Love the comparison tests because I don't think p-eople realize they aren't getting their money's worth, also some of the tips about using warm water and things like that--they are so informative. Thanks!!!!!
I don’t use the pods because they’re so expensive. I would love to know what powder or liquid detergent works the best for the lowest money. I would watch the whole series! 😂🙈
To reduce cost I use 1-2 tablespoons tide with 2 tablespoons of baking soda and a quarter cup of cheap vinegar in the rinse water. Cleans well, whitens whites, preserves darks.
Oh man, I was shocked to see that the laundry pods did so little cleaning! I have a special needs child, and we often have laundry that needs to be deep cleaned from blood (nosebleeds) and bathroom accidents. My go-to combo that rarely fails (meaning, rarely needs a second wash) is pretreating the stains with liquid Persil (literally just pour a little on the stain before throwing into the washing machine), putting 10 ml of the same laundry soap in the dispenser, and adding 1 scoop of the purple oxiclean to the load of laundry. I set the washing machine to soak for 1 hour before washing. For non-stained laundry, I just use 10 ml of laundry detergent in the dispenser and set the washer to only soak for 15 minutes before washing. Caveat- we do have a water softener so we need a lot less soap in general to get the job done.
I just scrub stains with regular soap and then put them in the normal load. Works for most things. I've never used a pod in my life. My mum never has either. She likes a soap cake called Velvet soap here in Aus. I just use any old soap bar usually. Works great.
Great video! Thanks for testing the different pods and showing us the results. I am still amazed from the video you did about detergent usage last year. Since that video, I have been more cautious with my detergent usage.
I just use whatever I find a deal on. If something is really soiled I use lestoil, Murphy’s oil soap, or some other pretreating method like spray n wash, Soilove, shout, etc.
Yeah, I have three or four different brands on the shelf right now, whatever was on sale at a rock bottom price, like All or Arm and Hammer for $1.99 a bottle, or Tide when it's $2.99. I don't use pods, just liquid. And a bottle lasts me ages. They all work about the same for me, but I don't have small children or elderly family members with special laundry needs. And my husband doesn't work down a mine or in construction. LOL. Laundry products are one of the least expensive items in my budget, mainly because I only use detergent, no softeners, no scent beads or anything. If I have a grease spot, Dawn takes care of it.
With the Percil pod container, you push straight back on the two tabs and lift. I put them in an old Tide container so I could get to them, but with the Tide container I cut off the little tab that makes you have to squeeze the lid to open. Childproofing sometimes makes a package adult proof.
I realized you need to do a mixer. I use Borax and Nellie and detergent and bleach with whites. I do a lot of laundry for a restaurant so a lot of white clothes. I watch all your laundry detergent videos. It was exactly what I thought would happen. So again a combination of different detergents. Thank you for doing all this it was amazing. You went above and beyond to help everyone
I use homemade detergent & Shout as a pretreatment for simple stains. When stains are tough like on my husband's work clothes (dirt, mud, chainsaw gas and grease) I use Tide Hygienic Clean. Works well for me
My hubby always buys the foo-foo smelling laundry soap, scent beads, softener and dryer sheets😡. The smells literally make sick, especially Lavender. I wish we could go back to having much fewer choices at the store; I get such anxiety.
I feel like all of these were made for just like normal daily dirty laundry (stinky, sweaty etc) not so much stained laundry. I feel like I would preheat all these stains before washing them with any detergent I was going to use.
Thanks for doing this. I was out laundry on cold tap water setting, but I desolve powdered soap in hot water before I add it to the machine. I save both money and reduce plastic. Those plastic jugs are great for emergency grey water storage. I heard the pods are bad for the earth but also overpriced. ❤
I really do enjoy and appreciate all the comparison testing you've been doing. This one is a big challenge because there are so doggone many products to choose from. If you're up to it, I'd really like to see more. Many thanks for all your efforts. Could you hear me yelling as you cut that all-cotton sheet? It's so hard to find quality cotton that is affordable. Hey, there's an idea for another comparison test.
I buy what is on sale at the time. Tide powder, Gain, Borax then spray with a stain remover product. Doesn*t always work but, can live with the results most of the time.
I would like to see more of your videos on detergents. Years ago, my husband wore uniforms at the lab he worked for & sometimes he'd go down into the mill. He would get oil & other dirt & grime on his lab coats & uniforms. Where he worked, the company sent all of their work clothes to a local laundry place. They were not clean after going to the cleaner. After a while, I started washing my husband's uniforms and lab coats. Detergent and pre-treating options did matter.
On laundry day I run the dishwasher (it had an internal heater) to bring the hot water into the pipes. Then I run my hot water wash halfway through the dish cycle. The only way I can figure out how to get truly hot water for the washer without running tons of it down the drain
I love the comparison videos. But if they’re not working out for you you can try something else. You can always return the laundry detergent if needed. I think. Or donate the detergent. -Hence why I never use pods because they’re too expensive. I definitely believe in pretreaters For stains. I use the oxy pretreater and it works pretty good. I use tide liquid sport in cold water with the vinegar rinse and then I put a dryer sheet in the dryer. My clothes are always fantastic. If I mix the colors together I use a color sheet so the colors don’t bleed in the water.
Spray ball point pen marks with any old hairspray before washing. The ink comes out every time. Oil is really tough, but I pretreat with Sunlight laundry bar soap, works pretty good. The other product that really works well on heavy grease and oil is called Lustersheen. Its not always readily available, i actually huy it at a store that specializes in mechanical supplies. Pretreating baby bibs and cloths that have baby food stains with the bar soap works amazingly well. As for detergent, i make my own and use vinegar in my rinse cycle, and use wool dryer balls. We ranch and the majority of my wash comes out clean, and mostly stain free. Unfortunately, if i miss pretreating heavy oil and grease, it is stained.
I wonder if water hardness or softness has anything to do with it? We have hard water and the A&H works fine. If there are really bad stains I use Grandma's Secret Spot Remover and it works pretty well. Thanks for the video, you really took one for the team!
The only time I used laundry pods is cheap ones from Dollar store when we go on long weekend trip. Hate to come home with dirty laundry . One less thing to do.
I pretreatment with resolve carpet cleaner, spray and leave wet over night, scrub oil spots with dawn and tooth brush. I add detergent, vinegar, or lysol, odor ban, fabulous to the machine on the hottest longest cycle . Then I check it before drying. I love going to this new laundromat - the machines have 3 wash cycles!!! Which I L💝 VE! AND BIG HOT GAS DRYERS❤❤ in 2 hours $25.00, I'm done!! Once a month , several king-size comforters, dog bedding, clothing towels PS- I WAS DOG BEDDING IN DOG FLEA AND TICK SHAMPOO, RINSE IN VINEGAR
Not a complaint but I would like to know if adjutantion helps contribute to the detergents ability to clean. I've used the front loaders, we currently have a top loaders without the adjatator thing and I swear I was able to get cleaner clothes having that in my washer verses not? Anyone have an opinion?
You should put each square in your son’s hamper for 24 hours to get that “boy smell”. Also, I’m curious about the Tide Free & Clear. I’ve been brand loyal my whole life to All Free & Clear because of allergies. The dermatologist back in the 80s told my mom to use only that to reduce the amount of rash and itching I get from soap and other irritants not being thoroughly washed out, and supposedly it’s the gentlest on skin. It’s just so darn expensive compared to Tide!
I was told by an appliance repairman that the pods don’t always dissolve fully and can clog things up eventually. And usually they’re more expensive anyway so that was easy😄
I hate opening those pod packets! Sadly my 6 year old is the one who figured out how to open it for me haha. Can't we just teach our kids not to eat things that aren't food!
I think the laundry pods are the most depressing to test. They are expensive, they are kinda useless, probably have a shorter shelf life and I believe because of their success (and liquid detergent), we are now seeing less and less powder detergent.
I think for those types of stains which you concocted, you have to pre-treat, at least with some liquid detergent and do a little rubbing of the fabric. You can’t do that when you use pods.
Pods are great for people who have issues pouring soap. Only buy them only if they are super cheap. Just like with reg liquid soap they tell you to use more than you really need. I only use one pod per load even if its larger. Be neat to see a "test showing does it make a difference with one or more pods". I have even cut back on reg laundry soap. I add my own oxi clean to my laundry when needed. So do you wash your colored cloths on warm? I always wash on cold to prevent fading for color bleeding. Also have you seen the new laundry sheets A&H has out?
A big reason I don’t usually buy the pods is I can’t add extra detergent to the stained area . People do like the pods because they’re not messy. I buy Tide or Costco brand and I have a small bottle of Seventh Generation for some clothing items . Though over the years I’ve bought all the brands even store brands.
Tara, you really really did a lot of work for all of us by doing all that laundry. I know it was a very expensive and an extremely time-consuming experiment. But I for one am shocked! Based on the liquids, and the pods, which I never use I find myself asking what do you use to clean your clothes? I use liquid and I use either Extra or Purex. But again what did you do to clean your clothes? Lol. Thank you for an eye-opening experiment.
There are too many variables to give useful results, machine type, water quality, water temperature, even the type of dirt. I only wash in cold, my best friend only washes in hot. I guess it’s a bit of a help but it sounds, to me, like you’ve just gained a great collection of detergents 🤣
I was waiting for the hammer to be released onto the percil containers 😂 but seriously I really appreciate your work. curious if you did a control, with no cleaners in the wash?
My husband throws the lids away on the tubs or cuts the package with that zipper from Hades. We don't have anyone in our house that may be tempted to eat the pods 😉
Hi- what is Lestoil and where do you get it? Do u mean Lysol?
I found Lestoil at Home Depot or Lowes
I love dawn for stains
I appreciate you so much for doing this laundry pod test. You went to a lot of time, work and cost to bring this to us. Saying “Thank You” does not do justice to this video.
Thank you for these videos! Yes please do liquid and powder to see which is the best detergent for the money!
Not only do the laundry soap pods fail us in cleaning, but the new style of washing machines fail in getting the clothes clean too. Very little water, no agitators!
That is why I got rid of my fancy machine . Went to the used appliance store and got a Hotpoint tub style. Washes great.
Looks like your theory that you can get laundry just as clean if you skip the laundry soap and use only hot water may not be too far off. I am really surprised these detergents cant even get out plain old dirt. I'll be interested to see how the other detergents go. Thanks for doing all this work for the betterment if mankind!

Looks like we still have to spend the time to pre-treat, so why spend the extra money on the big brand names? Thanks, Tawra!❤
Right?!
Exactly. I'm sticking with homemade which I can adjust as needed.
Tawra, you and Mike must really love us!!! Thank you both for all the work you put into your videos.
The Purex brand is pretty good! Maybe that can be an option for another video?
Maybe a test on just the stain removers since detergent doesn't seem to do the job?
I just scrub stains with regular soap and then put them in the normal load. Works for most things. I've never used a pod in my life. My mum never has either. She likes a soap cake called Velvet soap here in Aus. I just use any old soap bar usually. Works great.
Velvet is the best aweseome for period stains men's white shirts around the color I use it all the time
Great video! Thanks for testing the different pods and showing us the results. I am still amazed from the video you did about detergent usage last year. Since that video, I have been more cautious with my detergent usage.
Yes, keep going with the laundry soap. I personally use cheer because I am allergic to something in Tide. I’m just curious how this all turns out.
I pre treat with spray and wash, and a 1/3 cup Roma detergent, we don't have motor oil on clothes, and I've never had problems getting stains out. 😊
I just use whatever I find a deal on. If something is really soiled I use lestoil, Murphy’s oil soap, or some other pretreating method like spray n wash, Soilove, shout, etc.

I have recently started using the laundry detergent sheets and love them.
Me to
I like Gain because I can usually get it on sale and it smells so nice!!
This video is very helpful to me & much needed. I've been looking for a detergent that will clean & is still gentle to the skin.
With the Percil pod container, you push straight back on the two tabs and lift. I put them in an old Tide container so I could get to them, but with the Tide container I cut off the little tab that makes you have to squeeze the lid to open. Childproofing sometimes makes a package adult proof.
I pre-treat my clothing stains with Dawn dish detergent or an equivalent off brand. Works for me! Thanks for the cold water tip.
I would love to see a video on liquid laundry detergents. I like liquid the best b/c powder can clump & pods are so expensive.
Can you do a contol? Without any soap
Interested to see if liquids do any better. I tend to use purex because cost per load is less and seem to have similar results to more expensive.
Purex has always worked really well for me. But I'm not fussy--Purex, All, Arm and Hammer, Tide...it's all good as long as I get it super cheap. LOL.
Such givers. For the sake of mankind. Thanx
I hope you keep going! This has been something I’ve been doing on my own and can’t say I’ve found a clear winner yet
I LOVE the window over your kitchen sink!!
There’s kinda thing about that there window!!!
Thank you!! 😊
Wow! I appreciate all the work that went into this one!
I would love to see how the liquid detergent compares! I’m guessing it’s better than pods
I treat all my stains with regular Dawn and hot water. Works 99 percent of the time.
Same! Sometimes peroxide if it’s not color fast
I switched to Dawn powerwash and almost never have any stains left
I just use cheaper brand ( on budget) laundry detergent and use no name spray and wash when needed. We are seniors so dont have too too many stains.
I use homemade detergent & Shout as a pretreatment for simple stains. When stains are tough like on my husband's work clothes (dirt, mud, chainsaw gas and grease) I use Tide Hygienic Clean. Works well for me

I am curious about what the results would be in a top load washing machine? Thanks for testing the detergents. Very eye opening!
💕💗💕🙏🙏🙏 Thanks Tawra, that was a great test, really enjoyed it! May the Lord Jesus Christ bless you!!!

I don't try to wash on cold, but in the winter, my pipes run cold longer than it takes for the washing machine to fill! ;)
On laundry day I run the dishwasher (it had an internal heater) to bring the hot water into the pipes. Then I run my hot water wash halfway through the dish cycle. The only way I can figure out how to get truly hot water for the washer without running tons of it down the drain

To open the persil pods you have to push the tabs inward not upward.
Oxy Clean for stains. Pre treat.

I live in apartment our washers not upgraded i still use powder strech that dollar
Tawra a big thank you for the comparison video ❤
I was told by an appliance repairman that the pods don’t always dissolve fully and can clog things up eventually. And usually they’re more expensive anyway so that was easy😄
Use one tide and one gain pod in the same load
I don't use the pods. Good video.
How about homemade laundry detergent that is gray water safe?
that's pretty eye opening.
Please continue, this is really helpful.
This video series is going to be good! Thank you
I hate opening those pod packets! Sadly my 6 year old is the one who figured out how to open it for me haha. Can't we just teach our kids not to eat things that aren't food!

i use 2 pods for the large loads
The pods always wind up on my clothes. They don't melt away

Thanks for doing this. You didn't try free and clear. Maybe they don't sell free and clear pods
Wow...thank u for all the work!!!
I think this just proved your going to have to have a stain remover
I'm curious how your homemade detergent compares to the store brands
My husband throws the lids away on the tubs or cuts the package with that zipper from Hades. We don't have anyone in our house that may be tempted to eat the pods 😉
that was a lot of work. thank you
Thank you for all your efforts and time. No pods for me. Di you have a video comparing dyi detergents.
What would you use to get the stains out?
I use plain soap and scrub it, leave a little bit of soap on the stain and then put it in a regular wash.
Love this videos 🙌🙌
did you use warm water? I have never liked pods. My guess is powder will do a better job.
OMG,Thank you just started to watch ❤ u tawra
New subbie. I’d love to see a liquid test!
Spray hairspray on ink stains and they come out.
You don't need to waste hairspray. Just use regular rubbing alcohol, much cheaper.
I think pods are too expensive. Everyone has their own opinions.
tide & persil are the strongest
I have laundry pods and I never use them. These kind of pod stuff work best in dishwashers though.
They sure made the PERSIL CONTAINER CHILDREN PROFF IT SEEMS.
I just use what is on sale... laundry detergent is so crazy expensive.. so if i find a good sale i just stock up on it...
After I got my persil open I immediately went to another container
I find that i have to pretreat stains before i wash my clothes, as the detergent doesn't do what its advertised to do.
Weren't pods banned in New York?
