Awesome!!! What an amazing run. Go pro showed over 26kn for a quick second sending you into Warp speed. Averaging 25.5 over 10 seconds means there were speeds higher than 25.5 to get that average. Congratulations Joe You Cracked it!!!!
Yes, it was certainly the right wind for the job!
That’s very fast. No pitch pole impressive
25.5 knts deserves a Millenium Falcon Prize ;-) Love the "slow speed" for manoeuver @ 10 knts, and "almost at rest" @ 5 knts. As I remind myseld, sailing on a Corsaire with friends brought us close to Hell surfing at 5 knots...
Ha! Yes. even the slow bits were quick.
Thanks for the memories. Did nearly exactly this on my old Hobie 16 in the early 90's just off the coast of NH/MA (US) in a stiff 20+ knot SE breeze on a screaming reach. Not claiming any records, but similar ride and some of my best summer memories. Except I didn't have stiffened rudders and couldn't keep from burying the bows in the gusts. Spectacular pitchpole cartwheel happened catapulting me and my date airborne ahead of the boat at full speed. No harm as we weren't strapped in, but something I'll never forget.
Great sailing skills and wisdom demonstrated here. The entire ride is on the hairy edge of control the whole time. Admire the skill. Thanks for this...
I sailed a 16 and an 18 off New London and Groton at about the same time-loved wake surfing off the ferries and-once in a great while- subs coming up and down the Thames. Couldn't get away with that today! I'm in my late '60's now, I settle for chasing other Lightning sailors around the buoys on Sunday afternoons.
That pretty much sums up Hobie sailing for most! Thanks!!!
I have a very old Hobie book written in 1979 by Jake Grubb. The 14 and 16 were originally surfing boats designed by Hobart (Hobie) Alter a ledgendary American Surfer. Somewhere in that book Grubb claims the 16 can do 26 knots flat out and the 14 can do 24 knots flat out. I always found that a bit hard to believe untill you proved it on camera! Thanks for that.
I have had a Hobie 14 for 20 years. I dont claim to be a great Hobie sailor and i doubt i have broken 20 knots. Havent sailed the 14 for quite a few years but i still have it. Your video reminded me what a blast that boat is. Not bad for a 50 year old design.
For sure!
I'm not sure if anyone would ever get a 14 up to 24.
Maybe 22 if the stars align!
very nicely done. I still remember as a teenager in the 80's getting stuck in a squawl solo sailing a hobie 16. Needless to say didnt take long to loose control and capsize.
Yes, things can get away from you pretty quickly, especially when you're not ready for it!
Loved the dramatic intro and the main feature delivered the goods too. Serious style points. 🎉🎉
Congratulations!! 25.5kts warrants a space balls reference. Good job @Phil. That jib cleet fixed angle is a pain on the new H16s.
I was pretty happy with the intro - tension building, into about 20 minutes trying to attach the mainsheet!
Phenomenal, great banter too as always and legitimately really useful tips too while sailing at warp speed. Fantastic
Much appreciated!
Ah yes even us in the pacific have heard of one shoe Phil!
Well done Joe, absolutely bonkers
The legend of OSPhil is out - good to know.
Not often I hear that level of adrenaline Joe ! !
Fine time to smoke some more cabbage . Got an exceptional abs workout riding along with you on this one 💪
Ha! Yes, I thought i did quite well keeping it family friendly
@@JoyriderTV impeccable. 10/10
Faster than The Fastest Mouse in all Mexico.
and that's a fast mouse!
Speedy Gonzalez
Very well done, all.
I and my buddies owned a 16 and 18 simultaneously for several years ( three guys so that we could reliably launch the 18 and always pick up a straggler crew for the 16).
Sailing on the Great Lakes (mainly out of South Haven) and in the Gulf (Dunedin/Clearwater in the winter) we enjoyed a plethora of heavy weathrr sails.
You brought it all back, my friend!
Cheers,
Todd
Hi Todd, I'm glad that this brought those memories back - I think that there's still a lot of Hobie sailing going on in those areas.
@@JoyriderTV I've got to say the 18 was an amazing hull design for Lake Michigan's wave 🌊 forms. It almost never buried itself.
I always have my eye out for a solid hulled 18 but they are few and far between.
So you know of a cat that has that ride-on-top design that's available today?
Best regards,
Todd
Love this. In Western Australia where the Fremantle doctor does this every afternoon in summer, we call this f:.n HiHo! 16:25
Oh yeah! This is definitely what we signed up for!!
Fun stuff. Loved sailing my NACRA 5.7 on Kaneohe Bay.
Oh yeah, I bet that was cooking!
25.5 kn 🥳
Unbelievable. 💯 you are not the Joyrider - you are the Devil-rider. 😎
Best regards from South Bavaria
Yes I am!
I saw 26 knots!! congratulations!
It was there!
I used to looove sailing my H16 double-trapped in crazy winds. Just watching this gets my pulse racing.
Oh yes, there's nothing quite like it!
Wow! Nice run!
Thanks!
Hardcore stuff Joe. 20+ sitting on the nets is terrifying.
Brown trouser stuff!
Deserves 2 comments. I like murder weapon. Should name the boat that! Joe it takes a lot to step off the beach and get right into that. I like the warmup/building when approaching 30 knots. Outstanding!
Thanks. I'll see if Mr Malcheski likes the new name!
Giving it the beans!!!!!! I hit 8 knots on my Wave last weekend😊
Great stuff.
As long as you're in control - just add wind!
I enjoyed it so much, Hobie 16 is my favorite, congratulation for the speed ....up to the limits....was this in the Alizes ?
It seems like a regular wind where this can happen for fun. !!!
This was such a great run - It's always (mostly) more intimidating on the beach, once out there I just had to get on with it!
This was at Vassiliki, Lefkas, Greece
love your videos and looking at beautiful Greece
flipped on my Prindle 18 in Lake Tahoe just a hundred yards from shore with a 28 mile an hour gust love the videos keep them coming
Man versus nature! go man!!
USA
Thanks! Always nice, if you're going to flip it to be close enough for the crowds to see.
Joe says “Woo Hoo” either whenever the speed kisses 21+, or whenever the heel angle is suddenly pushing up past 25 degrees.
Nice run gents!
Thanks!! It was a hot one.
Nice. I ran a rental fleet of Hobie 16's on Miami Beach ca. 1980. I would take one out single on a trap to the Gulf Stream to surf the nice waves. Until one day the wind picked up and I suddenly realized my 145# could not right in those conditions. Cold sweat and eased her back to the beach as I realized my next stop would be Nova Scotia, if I was lucky/.
This guy is a little breathy, has he ever been sailing before?
Ha! Yes - not too fit for it!
Great story. glad that you made it back.
So exciting
Even more at the time!!
Yeah the good Ole days. I fished off 16 Hobie cats for over 25 years. Rudders would sing when you were going fast.
Absolutely, there’s nothing like getting a hobby cat screaming at speed
Been exactly there on a number of F-18s but F-18s have a LOT of excess buoyancy forward of the beam! Can't imagine the pucker factor on a H-16!
Certainly a factor of +6
Hobie. My Life.
Mine too!
Very good run. Optimal conditions. Marvellous views. It's even hypnotic, it's been 3 times I watched it through 😂👍
Wow, thanks! It was even better at the time!
The answer my
freind is blowing
by the wind !!! 😘😎
There it is!!!
Quite a run chaps 👏👏👏
Best one yet.
I think i've got a taste for it now. More to come i'm sure
Did 19 knots with my Patin Catalan, solo😁
great stuff! That must have been very cool
super cool
Thanks
Thats amazing. Could you let us know your positions to the wind accross the video(s) as its hard for me to really understand your choices and traveler position
For sure - we'll talk about it in today's Q+A
@@JoyriderTV Hey Joe can you please post the q&a video?
I pushed my Hobie so hard the front of the hull snapped off like a banana right in front of the forward support pillar.
wow. that must have been a difficult situation.
Where was this filmed?
Wildwind, Vassiliki, Lefkas, Greece
Another awesome video, Joe. Question for you: I come from a keelboat background, but I'm getting more and more into Hobie sailing. On keelboats, one major measure of seaworthiness is the condition of the standing rigging and the chainplates which anchor said standing rigging. I've replaced all of the wires on my 1982 H16, but should I be concerned about the "chainplates" which anchor the bridle and shrouds into the hulls giving way? Have you ever heard of such a thing on an H16? Also, what about the strength of the hull-to-pylon connections on a 40 year old H16? Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks and have a good one.
Yes, it's worth replacing the chainplates - we recently had one break - it was around 12 years old.
The hull to pylon - If you lift one hull with someone observing the pylon joint - if there is movement between hull and pylon then a major repair may be needed.
Interesting. I'll have to research how to replace H16 chainplates. You're legitimately an expert on Hobies. Thanks as always. @@JoyriderTV
Know what? My mistake for using the incorrect term. I was actually asking about the backing plates that the chain plates are mounted to. I imagine it's not possible to replace the backing plates, right? Have you ever heard of one failing?
@@mattkallenberg8567 the shroud anchor pins - which the chainplates attach to - bolt through the gunwale - so they are very easy to replace.
Hi! This is a great video! I sail a laser and make videos on tik tok, I was wondering what speedometer app you have for your videos?

That's what we call earth paradise 👍👍
Amazing
Have you try Tiger in this wind but only with the main sail
Awesome also you will see !!
As less pitch pole without jib , he goes like a rocket
D Pat 😊😊
I would love to see that. I'd guess you might lose 1 or 2 knots - but stay safe.
I think Joe has some short daggerboards made from broken ones that do not make problems because they might slip down.
I pushed the Tiger until the bow deck was flush was the water, and when you are at 20 knots you can even have it 5 cm below the water.
But I would leave the jib, just have the luff as tight as possible. That keeps the boat more neutral, less pressure on the rudders (without the jib the boat tends to luff up, you need pressure on the rudder to turn it down, but pressure increases the chance for the rudders to pop up).
The Tiger deserves a 25 knot run.
I love the boat, I am more confident even single handed because of the volume of the hulls.
@@feedingravens It is something to try , awesome 👍
Yes! For sure.
Request logged and in the pipeline
@@JoyriderTV total addiction 🤣🤣
Sounds like something for Speed Week Challenges. Tigers vesus 16s.
We need to get the JoyRider All Stars together one of these days and meetup and race somewhere. Comments like this one are so inspirational.
Pitching force to a heeling force
Absolutely!
more Like that ... absolutly bambam❤
More coming up!
Where is this??
Wildwind, Vassiliki, Lefkas, Greece
I should have never sold my Formula 1 Hobie 16.
They're as much fun now as they ever were!
jesus!
He was there.
Would have done faster on a Nacra. ✌✌
much.. .and whats with the windsurfers everywhere... 30kn..... nah
Yes, 30 knots + for sure!
I'd love to try. I dare say that on a 17 on 20 knots of wind you can reach high 20s - but that's a foiling boat.
At speeds above 20 the bigger boats are so much more composed
Yes. Much more refined and stable
fuck sake man! flippin rapid!
Thanks!! That felt quick!
Love to know what their heart rate was
Full jungle speed!
Smoke some cabbage?🤔😅
I had a lot on! The words just came out.
Its just a silly h16
It certainly is!!!
Too fast for me
But is it fast enough for Guinness???
I go faster than that all the time.
on your motorbike?
@@JoyriderTV In my dreams
Im not going to use a swear word ........ very very fast on a thing with 2 erm pontoons.
Oh yes@ Thanks
You guys were trucking along!! An average of 25 is better than I can do on a windsurfer! Thanks for sharing 🤙🤙🤙
🤙
Just epic raw footage, amazing job to get that kind of pace out of a H16 and live to tell the tale!
Thanks!!!
Incredible run, good sport and well done
Thanks!!!
Where i live, in Canada, near Montreal in my little sailing club everybody knows you, Be proud. From the young folks that want to start sailing CAT and the OLD one like me your Chanel is a must because you are covering everything. Like said in another one of your video, I just bought an old 16 Prindle and I am having a blast.... No I am not ready to go as fast as your video. But I am so happy and I feel FREE.
That's really great.
When, on my on going world tour, I come to Canada, I'll see if I can come and visit your club.
Thanks
@@JoyriderTV Keep my name... we will be there if you ever come. Many thanks again for transmitting your passion. I forgot, someday make a video about you! where your from and what is your goal. Where did you move? Do you make enough money out of your UA-cam channel for a living?
I remember doing something likewise 40 years ago in the Mediterranean during Mistral. Besides the gales there were huge waves that we could surf. There was only 2 boats on the water, the French youth champions and ourselves. When getting back on shore, the came to us and said ‘who the hell are you to have sailed in these conditions’ - lol
Ha! Great times! Good fun surfing the waves
Wow! you and single shoe were working to keep it alive, still you managed to throw in a couple commercials while hanging on for dear life! Totally awesome beans! Pays to know where those mountain wind holes are!
Ha! Yes, the ads keep coming - got to pay the bills!
Looks like surprisingly nice conditions considering the wind speed :D Good shit from one shoe Phil 🤘
Yeah man, that guy is legit!!
Pretty sweet there Joe!
Surprised you guys didn't move the jib clew down a hole (or two) to spill a bit of wind out the back. Might allow you to sheet a bit more without the heeling pressure
Yes - to be honest didn't even think of that - most of the preparation was mounting cameras!
Scary! Could not take my eyes off the leeward hull. Nice record!
Thanks. Certainly a memorable run.
Nice ! will show us, How launch beach, with waves ?
That's tricky for me as we only have flat water here.
If i get the opportunity I'll put something together.
25 kn is smth unbelievable!!
I did 20 on K1. The boat was one step away to split on the pices.
It's taken me 30 years of pushing to get up to that speed. It certainly feels unbelievable!
I've got a 20 ft racing catamaran and don't know how to sail. I never will know how to sail like that. I had no idea it was so busy for the crew. That was a great video. Thanks for sharing and thanks for your enthusiasm. Love it !! Good on ya mate I'll keep watching✌✌
Thanks very much.
If you want me to come and help you with your cat maybe we can do something - send me an email totaljoyrider@icloud.com
20 knots in the holes is not so bad... brilliant sail thanks Joe!🎉
Great crewing Phil!!
Now we wait for the record..🤞🤞
I did a pitch pole...there..my fault...i was crewing and was probably too far forward!
Could be.. maybe the helm could have asked you to move further back?
congrats Joe! looked epic!!!!
Sure was!!
What wind speed is 'dogs off chains'? 30knots?
We call that a 'gentle breeze' in winter here.
Ha! Yes, 30 knots - dogs off chains, 40 knots - chains off dogs
This is epic. Nice one Joe.
Cheers Bongo!
Love your footage! Brings me back to my Nacra 5.2 and later 6.0spi back in the late 80’s. What a blast did we have!
I can imagine - I sailed the 6.0 once - an experience i'll never forget
Insane speed..., well done. I have a question tho, what do you use to record your speed ? Also what device do you recommend, because I have tried 2 phones and a Locosys GW-60, but I ruined the batteries of these phones because of sun heat, and the locosys is so fragile, I just damaged it's screen and water can get inside now. To be honest all I want is some device that can get the data for me, I don't care if it doesn't show it in real time, but if i'm able to extract a file from it kinda like the locosys i'd be great. I don't think it's worth trying to repair the GW-60 unfortunately. If you've made it to the end of this comment thank you for reading through it.
Yes, my GW60 died as well>
This year I started using the velocitek speed puck - this gives an average speed over 10 seconds and then you can download the data and extract all of the stats from your run.
In Britanny when there’s wind there’re waves. It stops us from getting massive speeds like these and we end up capsizing because of the waves. Greece is rly nice thi
Yeah for sure, with waves it becomes a completely different game!
Having the jib sheet in a clamp next to the block in high winds, telling your foremast man to go down to loosen it. He must love you a lot.
🤩
Nothing says "It's windy" like the captain of a Hobie 16 trapping out by the rudder.
Oh yeah!!!
I'm an old Prindle sailor, but it seems to me the Hobie 16 hulls are too narrow and run too deep in the water which means more drag and resistance slowing you down. The stern end also seems to run too deep in the water. What is the weight of the 2 sailors?
Here I felt very little resistance - she was absolutely flying!!
Combined crew weight 155kg
Wooow!! what a performance from that Cat!! Thrilling! Can it be single handed?
This was one of the greatest runs!!
The only place you can get more panting .... is m + s underwear department ........
Ha!!
That was fun ......... need to work out how to jump em .
Oh yes!!
This is a great video Joe. Great leadership on the boat. And educational!
Much appreciated!
Joe, what's "rudder stall"? @ 14:45
This will be best explained in this week's Q+A
Definitely smoked some cabbage!
Yeah, that's some chewy stuff
crazy!!! But what a ride!! Great stuff, Joe!!! i still haven't cracked 20 on my Hobie 18 yet....so this is really inspiring!!! Keep up the great videos!
You can do it!
I used to sail a Laser in 7 Beaufort. This looks like it😅
oh yes!!!
WOW, so much fun to watch. I used to race with my ex husband. He sent me this video. I can't believe I used to fly the hull, oh but I remember it well. Thanks for the memories.
