@pianist1408 it really doesnt have the opposite effect. thats only you who wants it to be that way, to have a reason to correct someone over some nonsense. everyone else seems to get it
At least you know that. I don't even know that. I used to play with my brother sometimes and even he seemed like genius to me bcz after 2 step I would get no clue what's happening and in order to not appear dumb I would just pick up anything and lose within 5 steps. With any real chess player it can be possible that they will pre move those 5 steps and take back chess board from me knowing how shitty I play. I tried playing with computer few times and I was like how tf ppl win with computer. It was so bad that I start to feel embarassed even in front of machine and don't try now
I was told never to doubt my calculation and that if I think something is good I must play it, afterwards, if my calculation is incorrect I can work on that, but self doubt is no aid at the chessboard.
Magnus' intuition is so good that even when he's not fully confident in a calculation his intuition will sometimes give him the best move, though he's not sure why. He's explained this many times after a game why he picked a move, and sometimes he says "it just felt like the right move". Imagine having the confidence of feeling like it's probably the right move (and it usually is), whereas his opponent is probably worried about a bad calculation, which can betray their confidence, instinct, and creativity in the moment.
He truly is not worried about miscalculation mostly because his endgame is the best of any player ever. So he is able to win in losing positions more often than anyone in the history of chess. This also further increases his confidence.
Excellent question & answer. Constraints imposed by the quickly branching variant tree and clock time means that trade-offs in order to take a decision are inevitable - usually what could be described as "sufficient or better confidence level" in a candidate move or plan.
It’s so awesome to see a community of people, where the best are willing to help those who could potentially become rivals. Where else do you see such humility. (Or maybe the best is just so secure in his position that he’s willing to help others in order to create more competitive matches for himself because he has become so jaded playing the sport)
makes me wonder about how good players don't necessarily make for the best teachers. its a good example of how the best player thinks, but in terms of advice its like "If I feel good then its not a problem"
Basically, sometimes you didn't calculate the actual best counter to your move, but the moves that you calculated for yourself are still the best ones, even if some tactics won't work like you thought, so it's important to also follow your instincts at times
