How long to wait until doing reliable test ?

Great question! You should test anyone who presents with the classic signs and symptoms of syphilis. False negative results can occur in early disease, but the majority of patients who present with a chancre will have a positive serologic test at that time. False negatives are more likely to be seen with nontreponemal tests than your treponemal tests at this stage. If a nontreponemal test is negative and there is still a high suspicion of syphilis, you can always re-test (usually within 2-4 weeks).
