    Thank you so much for this video. I tested positive for RPR but Non reactive for FTA but the doctor just went with the positive RPR and gave me antibiotics didn’t explain the FTA part at all.

    Hi doc. What does RPR reactive mean? Is it consider it is syphilis?

    • @quickmed
      @quickmed  Рік тому

      Hello! A reactive test means a positive result. The test result is just one data point. You have to always consider the patient’s history and physical exam findings as well when considering a diagnosis of syphilis. Hope this helps!

      There are two types of diagnostic studies for syphilis: your treponemal and non-treponemal. The use of each one, as well as their results, depends on the clinical situation. For that reason, we recommend that you reach out to your physician for management that is catered to your specific situation. Hope this helps!

    So if I tested negative for my RPR test, should I take a treponemal test? Thank you!

      Hello! It really depends on your overall risk. I recommend reaching out to your physician for further guidance.

    I tested + for non-T then + for the Treponemal. But a week later I tested - for the non T right after getting the injection the same day

      Hello! A non-reactive VDRL means that the result was negative.

    What about an equivocal result? I just had one.

    • @quickmed
      @quickmed  2 роки тому

      An equivocal result can be one of two things. It could indicate an early primary syphilis infection or a false positive result. A repeat test would need to be done in that case if there is a strong suspicion for infection.

      @@quickmed the lab told my doctor they couldnt tell anything from my blood test & couldnt even tell her if there was any kind of positive or antibodies. Would a lab mess up cause that?

      @@backslash75 It is definitely possible. I would check with your doctor to consider repeating the test.

    Why the treponemal are positive for life?

    • @quickmed
      @quickmed  Рік тому

      The treponemal tests detect antibodies specific to syphilis. They usually appear earlier than the non-treponemal antibodies with acute infection and they usually will remain in the body for life, even after successful treatment.

      @@quickmed I know that, I was wondering if you knew why they don't decay since they're not protective against the bacteria. I didn't find anything in my search. :(

      @@caioduarte8299 I believe you're asking how a person can get re-infected by syphilis even with treponemal antibodies present? Look like the exact mechanism of immune evasion is unclear...but a current hypothesis is that it is due to antigenic diversity of Treponema pallidum repeat protein K (TprK). This protein is found on the surface of the bacterium. Hope this helps!
