BRILLIANT use of the unique acoustics in St Paul's Cathedral! The Chorus and Orchestra are outstanding, and Bernstein allows his superb soloists to shine. A supreme interpretation!
Every time I listen to Liber Scriptus, it reminds me that that was my most important solo as a lyrical singer, being a mezzo-soprano boy, and my teacher, she was the soprano, we were sitting together and everything was very beautiful, Verdi's requiem will always have a place in my heart.
The thing about the tempi (more elastic than others) is that I think LB was taking into account the very particular echo at St Pauls - so you can't just plough ahead - you have to let the sound ring, and then die before moving to the next phrase - take for instance "et preces hymnus". how he takes it slower - and allows each phrase to ring and end before moving on - for clarity, taste, musicianship and sheer brilliance.
The conductor? How about that ginger second tenor? It is a very fun part to both listen to and perform (if this could be said about a Requiem, in any case).
Thank you for uploading this amazing performance! I can remember vividly - as a fourteen years old boy - watching this in 1970 on a black & white TV! Leonard Bernstein was truly one of the best!
I have been looking for this recording for many years. After my musical tast. The best of all recordings. With 4 of the 20 centuries best singers. Brynjar Hoff
I had this on an album as a kid. Bernstein was conducting the New York Philharmonic. Richard Tucker was the tenor. I was impressed the Met signed Tucker using Caruso’s gold fountain pen. Yeah, I was weird. I liked classical. This masterpiece still makes me want to cry.
The original telecast began with spoken remarks by Bernstein. His first performance of the Requiem had been on March 25, 1967, in honor of Toscanini's centenary, with a quartet of G. Vishnevskaya, M. Horne, R. Tucker and J. Diaz. He returned to it in April 1969 with a quartet of M. Arroyo, M. Horne, G. Shirley and C. Siepi. Unfortunately no one recorded any of these. The London performances were followed a few days later with the Columbia LP, LB's final work with this piece. His score is at the NY Philharmonic Online Archives.
This entire performance is a masterpiece itself, but that Dies Irae in particular is unlike any other I've heard in my opinion. The trumpets are extremely clear and the percussion is extremely powerful. Altogether mixed with this tempo really emphasizes the anger of the Dies Irae without it feeling too rushed. Bravo.
...The terror of the days of wrath, the terrible wrath of God...The entire piece presents the pleas of the supplicant, the frightened, the guilt-ridden supplicant to be spared the Dies Ira, It represents the pleas of the self-confessed but deeply penitent sinner that God's mercy be bestowed on him and his.
This is the most beautiful performance and it's only because of bernstein! Every music that he touches he turns to gold. His passing caused us the lost of one of the best musicians ever to exist. I feel so fortunate that this was recorded and I'll listen to this for all the rest my life. Thank you for uploading!!!
Such a wonderful performance. The women are fantastic. Never heard anyone sing this music better than Arroyo and Veasey. Their vocalism and artistry are just beautiful to witness. The finale is breathtaking.
@@Bailey2006a Yes I've enjoyed that recording for a long time. Love Bjoerling. I think my all time favorite recording is still the first Giulini featuring Ludwig and Ghiaurov in their prime with excellent contributions from Schwartzkopf and Gedda.

Fantastic! Bernstein expresses every frases of music and words of the Requiem! He does really understand the Composers Work! without any Music front of Him! Wow! Bravo! Viva Bernstein!
So great to be able to contrast this with other recordings on UA-cam - I actually hear the prayer come through in this recording. It's a beautiful piece - and it's so easy to make it an occasion to showboat - demand that the lord hear OUR prayer and the like. Bernstein brings out all of the drama and fire and leaves us feeling the awe the music is meant to inspire. Bravo!
If I remember correctly, it was hell getting the technical side of this set up. They were heavily pressed for time and getting the right angles and mic placement was a big challenge. Obviously no excuse for showing the horn section instead of the trumpets once everything is already set up, but it's still an interesting fact.
Одно из немногих эмоциональных исполнений Реквиема Верди, из тех, которые мне довелось слышать. Бернстаин гениальный дирижёр, один из пяти наиболее любимых мной. которого я открыл для себя, слушая 5 симфонию Шостаковича

Wonderful performance almost at the level of Karajan, Price, Cossotto, Pavarotti, Ghiaurov. This one provides an important added value - watching Lenny's great conducting, his passion and his musical experience. In contrast, Martina almost cries in the selected passages. Beautiful!!!
How can Karayan - cold dictator compare with Bernstein who gives you a lot of emotions?! Yes, Pavarotti is missing a lot with his voice, however this work is spectacular, exemplary and historical.

What resonance from the Mezzo soprano! Magnificent voice. Unfortunately the cameras were not always able to keep up with where the action is. Sound quality for this day and age was not refined and defined sufficiently.
Maybe it’s the great miking, or the great orchestra, perhaps both- gotta give Lenny some credit, of course- but I don’t think I’ve ever heard an ensemble sound more together in a church. Incredible performance.
