Hello Rick: I want to thank you for this video. I just purchased the 67i but I am new to the GPS universe and especially the crazy Garmin GPS ecoSystem. I am a tech guy but as a newby to GPS I find myself completely lost with the terminology, apps, maps, buttons, synching, satellite subscription, and, especially, the poorly explained and unintuitive Garmin universe of desktop software applications, web pages, map options, and phone apps all of which are needed to use the device effectively! After watching your video I still have miles to go, but I now have a foundation for learning that has cut through the worst of my confusion. I feel comfortable about it now. So, really, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
Don't feel bad. I've been using Garmin GPS hand helds since about 2000 and find the 67 a huge step backwards compared to earlier model which did not require searching the 'net and having additional apps etc and all that garbage. The convoluted and slow satellite imagery selection and downloads are a disaster.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the 67i. When it comes to 67i vs the 66i, I find the 67i is much faster and better. Are you referring to models proceeding the 66i? Rick
Bought my 67i like day ago already loving it i had 64s earlier. Alot of more stuff and found your videos also. Thanks for these tutorials these are awesome :)!
Glad this video is here! Thanks for sharing. For others' sake: I couldn't follow at a few important points though since not all the instructions were step-by-step. I rewound three times to see if he mentioned it, but don't think he did: to rearrange the icons you simply start by going into the main menu, then to get the option to change the order of the icons you highlight _any_ icon (not necessarily the one you want to change) and hit "menu" again where (and this is key) a small pop-up window at the bottom will appear that says "Change Item Order". Hit Enter to select it, then a vertical list of all items will come up. Scroll down to the one you want and hit "Enter" (again), and then it will give you the Move/Insert/Remove menu he showed. The intermediate steps were missing so I had to fiddle with it a bit to find out how to get to the Move menu option. Still, helpful information condensed all in one place here! Saved me a lot of time and informed me of features I didn't know this device had. Thanks again!
@@outdooremergencytech Great. Thanks! This GPS unit saved me getting spun around on the trail two days ago when I crossed an adjacent river (which I confused for the main one) along a trail, and I went the wrong way onto a different trail at first but it warned me I was going off course because I used the course planner feature. Handy device!
It is a great device. I'm glad you're testing it and getting to know it well. One problem is that many people get a satellite communicator and go out and use it without getting to know it well. Thanks for letting me know some of your experiences with it. Rick
Great review. Just bought mine today from REI. Blown away by the great user interface. Used a 60CSX for 13 years and while a great unit, this is easier. Buttons and toggling amazing.
Hi Rick, thanks for this, it was super helpful!!! Just a quick note on the off course function, I stumbled across this while editing how I wanted my Trip Computer to appear. Off Course is also one of the display functions you can have updating in real time, and it will tell you by how much and whether left or right of the trail - for eg R/L80m (I'm in Australia so my units are metres (m)). Also stumbled on a quick flashlight function. Its not as great as having a button on the device itself, but you can do a quick press of the power on/off button (two presses if you are in a page) and then the flashlight option is there where you can turn it on/off. A handy lock screen function there too.
Thanks for your videos. About to pull the trigger and buy a 67i. I am now in my 70s, but still quite active. Do several canoe trips in Quetico/Canada and BWCA in U.S.A as well as 1-2 backpacking trips each year in Black Hills, Colorado/Wyoming. I have an ~9 year-old, DeLorme InReach SE that I have used on trips for years and still works for MapShare, messaging but, of course is cumbersome and has no on-screen navigation or other features. Time for an upgrade. My question: When you are out on a multi-day wilderness trip and have the 67i and your smart phone with you on the trip, do you ever use the Bluetooth connection to the phone to do navigation/see maps on the phone? Or is the navigation function/screen/UI on the 67i so good you don’t really need your smart phone to connect to the 67i? Or do you use the Bluetooth connection to the phone mostly for typing messages via the Garmin app as typing messages is so much easier that way? In short, if I am going to have both my phone and the 67i with me on a trip, how much will I use each and in what situations will I use the phone? (Most of the trips I take are out of cell phone coverage areas; I have no service). Asked another way: if I have a 67i, will it be worth lugging along my smart phone? Seems to me I would only use the phone for the ease of typing out messages.
First, you do have the Bluetooth connection that allows you to use both the device only, or you can use your phone. I like being able to use my phone because the screen is larger and its easier to type out a message, but on a multi-day trip, I don't want to rely on Bluetooth technology or the phones battery. The screen is large enough on the 67i to see everything well and it works great as a standalone device. If I was concerned about weight in my pack, I would have no problem leaving my phone behind, but I always carry my phone for photos plus making phone calls if I do get cell service. It's true, that it's much easier to use your phone to message. What I personally do is have my quick text messages set up so I can select them and don't have to type out a message. When I get to a place on the trail for lunch or am at my campsite, it's not a problem to spend a little more time typing out the message on the device, but usually I fire up my phone and message the easier way. I hope this helps. If I were climbing Mount Everest, I would never take my phone, but if my adventure and space in my pack is not an issue, then I'm definitely taking my phone with me. Let me know if you have any other questions or if I answered your question well enough. Rick
Thank you so much for posting this video, I ordered a brand new Garmin 67i yesterday, and should have it by Friday. Glad to hear about the new 67i and I hear your point about seeing my hands. My wife go on to me about this a few days ago. thanks for this information. How do you find a trail when you are traveling and want to set up all of the routes before you are near the trail? thanks in advance for any help.
Personally, I will do a few different things. 1. I'll look on the 67i map or on the computer on the Explore.Garmin map page and look for trails in the area I'm interested. 2. I'll use AllTrails to do my trail research and then either import the trail from AllTrails to my Garmin device, or I'll create a course of my own if a trail or combination of trails on AllTrails doesn't fit what I want. Many times, after using one of the two methods above, I'll create the course on my 67i so it's ready when I get to the trail. Let me know if you have other questions. Rick
Thank you so much for the prompt reply. I'll look into how to import an all trails map as I use those all the time I played around with the Garmin explore app on my computer, but so far it's not that intuitive for me Thanks, again great video. I've watched it multiple times learned something every time.
Great video! I've just upgraded from a 64s after many years of good use hiking and mapping trails and wetlands under forest canopy. Looking forward to the greater accuracy of the 67i. Wondering if the 67i has any way to view the satellite positions in the sky? I can't seem to find any way to do this. Do you have any suggestions? TIA
Thanks for the heads up. If you go into the menu and then go to SATELLITES. It should be near the bottom of the menu page. You will get a list of all the satellites and the approximate location in the sky from North, South, East, and West. Presently, I am showing 12 satellites in Colorado. I'm halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
The hunting maps are part of the Outdoor Maps+ for $49.99 annually, or you can purchase HuntView Plus Maps for $89.99. Several Garmin Technicians told me that the "Locate" button is more of an emergency type action that you would use if you wanted to know where the Garmin user was. This is what search and rescue teams can use to help locate the person. They said that waypoint cannot be deleted. This is something I want to challenge more and confirm they are correct or make sure they haven't changed anything that may now allow that waypoint to be deleted. I hope that helps. The Montana 700i and 750i are meant to be used with off-road and city navigation. You can use the 67i for that but it's not the same and it's not as responsive as the Montana. If you're set on using it for turn-by-turn instructions, I would call and talk to Garmin about it first to make sure you're sure or happy with the advice they give you. Rick
Thanks Rick, very helpful. Just curious, which GPS holder/tether are you using? There are quite a few options available, but I'm looking for something I can rely on that works well, and I'm guessing the one you're using has enough miles on it to know if it works well.
Well, I own four of them and have been using them for the past three years (I own four as I have so many satellite communicators). I have tried several others and this is the one I like the best. Garmin Backpack Tether on Amazon: amzn.to/4cMtbPy Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
Thanks for the video Rick! Question: Can you use the 2-way radio function without paying for a Garmin subscription that gives you the SOS/text capability?
I just got a 671. I'm sure it has instructions, but I was curious if you had any suggestions on the first steps right out of the box. Do you have a video like that?
The first thing is to get it setup right and pick the best subscription for you. Check out these videos below I recently made. This first one is how to setup the Mini 2 but most of it still applies to the 67i: ua-cam.com/video/OhRhfScinOw/v-deo.html New Garmin inReach Subscription Plans: ua-cam.com/video/THIt2QLrEBY/v-deo.html Next, I would make sure you understand messaging well: ua-cam.com/video/uLN974xXk_I/v-deo.html Let me know if you have any other question. @@outdooremergencytech So, I've been playing with my new 67i. Mostly going crazy with all the hoops they make you jump through. i finally created 3 "courses"; 1 on the device and 2 using the Garmin Explore app. I was excited to take my dog on a walk with a pre-set course, but when I select "Go", the course shoots from my neighborhood to... antarctica or somewhere. All 3 courses do this when loaded up. They show themselves correctly at first, but wig out when I click "Go". And just to clarify further... once I hit "Go", it's calculating the route AFTER it's already been calculated, and creating an fictional route somewhere waaaaayyy south Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks!
Interesting. I have created hundreds of courses on my device and on the Explore App and have not had that issue. I would call Garmin directly and talk with them. It sounds like it may be an issue with your satellite communicator which they should fix by exchanging the device for you. Also, make sure you log into the Garmin Express software and update your device. It's possible that an update may correct the problem. Let me know what they say. Rick
@@outdooremergencytech - This happened after all the updates. HOWEVER... the problem seems to have fixed itself. I found a post on the Garmin forums where someone else had the exact same issue. Someone else suggested that they bypass the issue by (instead of using the "Course Planner") using the "Find" button instead. I did that... it worked... and when I tried it again using the Course Planner, it worked there too.
So I am planning a trip through the Mexican desert next week. It's about 2.5 hrs off road. I just tried a test course. Then I when to the course and hit menu and I do not see a track back option. I need to be able to save my course in. Then pick that course and follow it out exactly the same route. What am I doing wrong.
One way to TracBack is from your RECORDING CONTROLS. I have a video where I show creating a course and then using TracBack to see if I get an off-course alert. Go to the 5:29 minute mark in my video link below. ua-cam.com/video/Z-IWa1pl9hg/v-deo.html Let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions. Rick
If you select quit at the bottom of the device, it will move to MESSAGES, where you can then select NEW MESSAGE, then select SEND LOCATION. This is the fastest way to get to messages but it is also on the Main Menu. I know of no other way to make this faster. You may want to contact Garmin to see if they know a faster way to get to SEND LOCATION. I would like to help more so let me know if you have other questions. Rick
I have looked into it and after you select MARK, then at the top of the screen you will see the waypoint name. You can keep the one assigned or you can create your own name, then enter the coordinates, and then hit DONE, and SAVE. Now you can go to the MENU and look for the WAYPOINT manager and your waypoints will be listed there. I created two test waypoints and found them both and they I was able to view them on the map and then could navigate to them. I am going to create a video tomorrow morning to show people how to do this. Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions. Rick
@@outdooremergencytech Yes, hitting Mark first works. I had been trying to enter the coordinates directly into the waypoint manager, thinking Mark was just for entering directly from the map or on location. Thank you for taking the time to address this.
Its good to have quick messages if you are doing sport oriented motorcycle trails and you brake your phone screen or you are not carrying any phone with you for example.
Hello, please can anyone tell me where I can find the Alltrails maps on the 67i that Garmin Connect shows me I have uploaded on my 67i? I looked in Course Planner. I have the device connected through the Alltrails app. Thank you
I don't have an answer for you. I use AllTrails and my 67i but I only export courses that will show up on my 67i if I need that. If someone else doesn't have the answer, I would call Garmin technical support. Rick
Flashlight update 67i... press the power button to enter the brightness menu and you will see the flashlight below activity recording feature. you can toggle off/on and adjust the light brightness
I'm not sure if I can upload an image here but you get to it by going to MENU, SATELLITE, then hit the Menu button again, and then select SATELLITE SETUP. It will now give you the choice of GPS only or Multi-Band. I can make a video of it if you would like. Rick
Thanks for the thumbs up. Sometimes I talk slow and some times I get excited. It's all a learning process to learn and become better over time. I appreciate the advice. Rick
It seems that the intent of the GPS unit is trending away from its ability to operate without being tethered to a cell phone. Being that this unit relies so heavily on being connected to a phone it makes me ponder the point.
The 67i is one of the few devices that does not need to be synced in order to use all of it's functions. The 67i is my favorite satellite communicator for precisely this point. You can sync it, but you don't need to. The Mini 2 is slightly different in that you need to sync it to your smartphone to get most all the features that the 67i has to offer. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
How can you expect that Garmin will fix the issue with Acive Weather forecast in remote areas with no cell coverage when this Wearher is based on that cell signal?? 😂😂😂
Good point. I think it's a worthless part of the 67i because I can get better weather forecasts from my phone when in cell service. You laugh, but you bring up a great point and I'm with you on it. Rick
@outdooremergencytech I think it is just the way to get to the weather forecast without having to take your cellphone out from your pocket in the place where there is a signal. I own the 86i, and my complaint is that I can't see the last forecast (that was downloaded) in the place without signal.
I'm sorry you feel that way. I have tested the 67i and combined all of the short videos into one long video. It may not be perfect but it has a lot of useful information in it. Let me know what you think I can improve on for future videos. Rick

@@outdooremergencytech Thanks much, I will check that out.
Thanks for the video Rick! Question: Can you use the 2-way radio function without paying for a Garmin subscription that gives you the SOS/text capability?
No. In order to 2-way message you need a subscription.

@@outdooremergencytech Thanks for the reply/info Rick.
I just got a 671. I'm sure it has instructions, but I was curious if you had any suggestions on the first steps right out of the box. Do you have a video like that?
The first thing is to get it setup right and pick the best subscription for you. Check out these videos below I recently made.
This first one is how to setup the Mini 2 but most of it still applies to the 67i:

@@outdooremergencytech THANKS!
And just to clarify further... once I hit "Go", it's calculating the route AFTER it's already been calculated, and creating an fictional route somewhere waaaaayyy south
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Do you have a link for the harness holder?
Here's the link to the Garmin Backpack Tether:

So I am planning a trip through the Mexican desert next week. It's about 2.5 hrs off road. I just tried a test course. Then I when to the course and hit menu and I do not see a track back option.
I need to be able to save my course in. Then pick that course and follow it out exactly the same route. What am I doing wrong.
I just want to want to confirm I am on the map Icon
One way to TracBack is from your RECORDING CONTROLS. I have a video where I show creating a course and then using TracBack to see if I get an off-course alert. Go to the 5:29 minute mark in my video link below.

you did not cover the profile. trying to understand what they do. Can the 67I do activities like the watch?
Good point. Let me look into it more as it may make a good video.
Rick
I’d like to add my GPS location as a priority on the menu somewhere, how can I do that please?
If you select quit at the bottom of the device, it will move to MESSAGES, where you can then select NEW MESSAGE, then select SEND LOCATION. This is the fastest way to get to messages but it is also on the Main Menu. I know of no other way to make this faster.
You may want to contact Garmin to see if they know a faster way to get to SEND LOCATION.
I would like to help more so let me know if you have other questions.
Rick
Press the power button once and the flashlight is there to toggle on/off
It's nice when you understand where it is.

How do I enter known coordinates and save them? When I enter 2 locations in a row, the second one overwrites the first one.
Let me take a closer look at this tomorrow morning and make sure my advice is accurate, plus I may make a video about it.
Rick
@@outdooremergencytech Thank you
I have looked into it and after you select MARK, then at the top of the screen you will see the waypoint name.
Rick
@@outdooremergencytech
Yes, hitting Mark first works.
I had been trying to enter the coordinates directly into the waypoint manager, thinking Mark was just for entering directly from the map or on location.
Thank you for taking the time to address this.
Always glad to help. Let me know if you have any other questions or have an idea of something you would like me to research more.

Its good to have quick messages if you are doing sport oriented motorcycle trails and you brake your phone screen or you are not carrying any phone with you for example.
Great point.
Rick
Hello, please can anyone tell me where I can find the Alltrails maps on the 67i that Garmin Connect shows me I have uploaded on my 67i? I looked in Course Planner. I have the device connected through the Alltrails app. Thank you
I don't have an answer for you. I use AllTrails and my 67i but I only export courses that will show up on my 67i if I need that. If someone else doesn't have the answer, I would call Garmin technical support.

Flashlight update 67i... press the power button to enter the brightness menu and you will see the flashlight below activity recording feature. you can toggle off/on and adjust the light brightness
Thank you for bringing this up. I thought there was a recent change.
Rick
Can anyone share the screenshot when the device is multi satellite Mode..
I'm not sure if I can upload an image here but you get to it by going to MENU, SATELLITE, then hit the Menu button again, and then select SATELLITE SETUP. It will now give you the choice of GPS only or Multi-Band.
I can make a video of it if you would like.

Sometimes I talk slow and some times I get excited. It's all a learning process to learn and become better over time. I appreciate the advice.

Rick
@outdooremergencytech
I think it is just the way to get to the weather forecast without having to take your cellphone out from your pocket in the place where there is a signal. I own the 86i, and my complaint is that I can't see the last forecast (that was downloaded) in the place without signal.
👏👌🇳🇴🤠
Thanks for the thumbs up.
Rick
I’m sorry, but when you turn the phone first on, it doesn’t just have a start screen. There’s gotta be a way this tutorial is not helpful.
I'm sorry you feel that way. I have tested the 67i and combined all of the short videos into one long video. It may not be perfect but it has a lot of useful information in it.
Let me know what you think I can improve on for future videos.

67i looks like nokia from 1999 ..
Wtf ?
The screen should be as big as the black bezel around current 67i .
That is a photo of the current 67i.
