Garmin - add e-sim to the upcoming devices please.

Great video, many thanks. :)
Glad to help. Rick
As an outdoors tool.. i dont get the whole internal battery... i perfer to just replace my batteries..and can get batteries just about anywhere.. replace and go..vs charging its not a good idea..waiting for it to carge.. common garmin..smh
You make a good point, but I have never had issues with the internal battery, especially on the Mini 2. I always keep a portable charger with me and when I'm in my tent at night, I charge it over night when the battery starts to get low, but that hardly ever happens as this thing will keep a charge for several weeks. Rick
So if I were to buy a one month subscription do I have to keep buying a subscription every month to avoid a deactivation fee? Or if I buy a month and let that run out and don’t buy another month I’ll be fine and won’t have to pay a deactivation fee?
Garmin recently changed their subscription plans and you can't suspend the subscription any longer. You can go to the Enable plan for $8 per month if you want to keep a basic life-saving service, and then you can switch back to a more expensive plan when you plan on using it a lot. It probably doesn't pay to deactivate your account if you plan on using it multiple times per year. I would call and talk to Garmin about this if you want additional information. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
@@outdooremergencytechawesome thank you
I use the most basic plan, how do I make sure I’m not being charged for tracking points? I just want the breadcrumb trail / trackback so I can get back to camp. Watching video again cus you probably answered this but I’m slow 😂 thx
34:00 - 40:00 was what I was looking for! This guys a hero! ❤ thanks from BC CANADA 🇨🇦
As long as you're not sharing your tracks via. MapShare then you shouldn't be charged. It's only when the tracks are being shared with others over the satellite system that you'll be charged. You may want to follow up with Garmin, but this is what I have learned in my field tests and research. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
Thanks for the thumbs up! Rick
of videos for Garmin inreach applicable for the 67i? Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and your family Rick!
The 67i works almost exactly the same as the Mini 2. They both can connect to the Explore App and the Messenger App. Let me know if you have any other questions. Merry Christmas! Rick
This device can only measure a distance of 104.2 miles
Thanks for letting us know. Rick
It doesn't matter that India is not covered by these devices because India, for God knows what reason, has completely banned all satellite devices. They are still in the stone-age.
There are several countries that ban satellite communicators, and I believe North Korea is one of them, but I'm not planning on going there any time soon. Rick
I boughy the 67i and you cant see so well at direct sun something must be done from Garmin..I re-sent back the Garmin 67 i
Interesting. I have never had that problem and I use mine in direct sunlight a lot. I'm wondering if your device had a defect. Let me know if you find out anything or choose a different satellite communicator. Rick
@ hello Rick! Thanks for answering! I testes at direct Sun light in a Gyrocopter and it was a bit dusappointig. I as well talked to GARMIN Italia and They Said its like that.. I have EPIX 2gen and irs Amoled but i can see with it, the only différence the screen is to small not very usefull. The GARMIN was ok I believe that you never test in a Mountain on the Snow at Sun light that becomes unreadible.
I've been out here in the Rocky Mountains in bright sunlight and with a lot of snow. This issue is something I haven't noticed myself. I'll pay more attention to it in my upcoming tests as all of them are in the snow during the winter months. Rick

@outdooremergencytech ah cheers
I recently got the Motorola and so far it works great for messaging. What surprised me was that it linked up with a satellite when I was in the house.
That's good to hear since I had some issues when inside a building but next to a large window. You're hitting on a great point though and that's to test your device thoroughly so you know it's limits. Rick
Thanks for the quick reply and the Link to the Backpack Tether!

For geocaching and navigation which is a better device , gpsmap 67 or oregon 750, even though oregon 750 is discontinued?
That's a good question that I can't answer as I have never used the Oregon 750. All I can offer is that the GPSMAP 67i is probably the best unit for geocaching that I have ever used. Garmin GPSMAP 67i (Amazon Link): amzn.to/4iAED4T Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick

Yeah the SOS should work regardless. That sucks Garmin!
There have been a lot of comments like yours. Maybe the satellite communication companies will make some changes in the future. Rick
Can you message out or call for SOS on this device?
No. This was one of the few devices I reviewed that you cannot contact SOS or message on. It's only for navigation. I won't be covering devices like this in the future. Rick
I use routes instead of courses most of the time. The problem for me is that in the huge backcountry of Wyoming there are very few trails and roads and such that the snap to path method of the courses exist. And the few that do exist have huge inaccuracies. I have seen a trail as far off as a half mile. The mapping is horribly inaccurate. Allot of the trails are based on the 1964 USGS 7.5 minute quads which makes it even worse. Trails that were there in 1964 no longer exist or have been re-routed many times over. It is better for me to be fairly close with routes than it is to be way off with courses. Ideally creating my own track and saving the activity to use over and over is the very best. That being said, courses are much better for less remote areas. I prefer them when I am driving on highways.
Great point. Courses are not the answer for everyone. I like them better, but you have just brought up a point why you may need or want to use routes. Thanks, Rick
Thank you so much
Always glad to help. Rick
It’s interesting to note Garmin’s phone pairing feature- is it a response to the Zoleo which already had (needed) phone integration? In any event it underlines the importance of carrying a power bank no matter which unit you use… thanks for your updated review…..
Glad to help. Your question is interesting but my position is that no matter how good I think a device is, I'm always going to carry a backup and a battery charger. I'm not going to trust any device completely. I hope I understood your question correctly. Rick
the inreach mini is great, especially for those who only really want the safety and peace of mind the SOS feature gives
Right. Most people would be better served if they chose the Mini 2 without understanding everything other devices can offer, such as the 67i. Rick
I just got the 67i cause i had the money and i needed some of the features like precise weather forecast
Smart move. The 67i is my number one satellite communicator when I'm not reviewing them on my site. Rick

English Translation: Hello, how are you, what profile and activity configuration to use GPSMAP 67 in a 4x4 all-terrain vehicle? I would use DRIVING for Profile. The Activity is when I start navigating, whether I'm hiking or driving. I may not understand your question correctly, but please reply with additional information if I misunderstood you. Also, don't hesitate to contact Garmin directly. Rick
Can anyone share the screenshot when the device is multi satellite Mode..
I'm not sure if I can upload an image here but you get to it by going to MENU, SATELLITE, then hit the Menu button again, and then select SATELLITE SETUP. It will now give you the choice of GPS only or Multi-Band. I can make a video of it if you would like. Rick
Hey I enjoy your videos. Did you ever test this GPS under cold weather conditions. If you did how did it work. currently thinking about buying this. Thank you
I haven't thoroughly tested it in cold weather but I have had it out many times here in Colorado in temperatures down to 14 degrees F and I have never had any issues with it. Garmin says it's operating temperature range is -4 to 140 degrees F, with a charging temperature range between 32 to 113 degrees F. Hi Rick I mostly Solo Adventure Motorcycle Ride in Colorado, like the Dinosaur National Monument Area in NW Colorado where no cell service at all, or I also go Technical Canyoneering with Ropes to Slot Canyons in Utah/Colorado. I currently have SAR50 Plan with my Montana 700i InReach Plan. Should I upgrade to the SAR100 or SAR HR Plan? Thank you!
It really depends on how high you'll be. There is a basic SAR insurance, then one below 5,000 meters, and another one above 5,000 meters. See the Garmin link below. www.garmin.com/en-US/p/906397 I'm not an expert in this so I would recommend checking the link and then contacting Garmin directly. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
An informativ short video, thank you! I'm looking for an emergency messager, beacon or anything with an reliable sos option. The problem, many devices like the inreach mini 2 do have all the features, but the subscription plans are usually for a year which is to expensive. Can you recommend anything, where I can only pay for 2-3 separate months over the year? Thank you for your work!
Garmin used to have the subscriptions set up so you could suspend for any length of time but now they have an $8 ENABLE plan for when you want to suspend, so you cannot truly suspend with Garmin any longer. You can suspend your account with SPOT, ACR, and ZOLEO. I leave the links below so you can take a closer look at them. You can't truly suspend ZOLEO as they charge you about $4 each month when suspended. Hi Rick so if you have previously sent a message using InReach, and the old messages are in the Garmin Messenger App, does that mean now that the contact can send you a message?
As long as the recipient has the message you sent, then they can respond to your message. I would make sure the person understands the message they are receiving and that they can respond. The one issue is if they click on the link in the message to see your location. They cannot respond to the message from the link. They need to respond to the message as you would with a text, without clicking on the link in the message. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
i appreciate this guys channel. no fluff just helping people out. thanks a lot
I appreciate the thumbs up. Rick
I have a 750i along with an Iridium Sat Phone and was thinking that a non-Iridium satellite option would be nice to have since during a SHTF situation, it is likely that Iridium would be taken over by the government (US of course). Now that 5G makes the Spot worthless, that is the only scenario I could see using it for.
Technology is changing rapidly and we all need to think about what we will need in the future, versus the past. Have you considered a handheld ham radio, along with a portable base station? It requires a license but this is better in a SHTF situation. Rick
@ Yes, I am an Extra Class Amateur (KI1Y Cocoa Beach) and have a collection of about 30 ham radios, including HTs, Mobile and Base Station. I have old tube radios and some in faraday cages with backup power in case of solar flares, etc. I'm always increasing my comm capabilities, recently ventured from HF, VHF and UHF into SHF (microwave) as well as from analog to digital. I just bought a Starlink Mini to be able to maintain digital ham radio and tracking capability.
Well, you are far beyond me with this. I would love to learn more from you about ham radios is emergency situations. Thanks for letting me know. Rick
@@outdooremergencytech The guy who has the most (and best) You Tube info/videos on ham radio is David Cassler. He is a retired electrical engineer that has covered every possible topic at one time or another. You can go as deep as you want to with his material.
Is there a way to have it do back to start as the bird fliestimeny times I hike wandering paths but when done i find it easy to have it point me toward truck and ill figure the route
I need to check on this. I know you can navigate by direct route or path. You can always put a waypoint down and navigate to that waypoint as the crow flies. Let me know if you have any more questions or if you would like me to create a new video on this. Rick
@outdooremergencytech Rick, so cool to chat with you! Seems like it should, been playing with mine but can't get it yet, I believe you are right if you navigate to waypoint, it will go direct, (haha when "normal" hike I often neglect to take the time to do this.) Let me know if you find an easy way to do this, love having both, "path based " and "as bird flies
I will create a video on this and will test it today to see what I find out. Another thing you can do if you have it synced with the Explore App is you can select the point on the map and navigate that way. Rick
Random question - did you apply a screen protector on your 67i? If so, any issues?
I haven't used screen protectors on any of my devices and have never had any issues. Rick
Good content but next time please talk slower
Thanks for the thumbs up. Sometimes I talk slow and some times I get excited. It's all a learning process to learn and become better over time. I appreciate the advice. Rick
Great video! I've just upgraded from a 64s after many years of good use hiking and mapping trails and wetlands under forest canopy. Looking forward to the greater accuracy of the 67i. Wondering if the 67i has any way to view the satellite positions in the sky? I can't seem to find any way to do this. Do you have any suggestions? TIA
Thanks for the heads up. If you go into the menu and then go to SATELLITES. It should be near the bottom of the menu page. You will get a list of all the satellites and the approximate location in the sky from North, South, East, and West. Presently, I am showing 12 satellites in Colorado. I'm halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
Please ignore previous. I found how to do this.
I wish i could play pretend
No idea about what you're referring to, but I'm going to assume you're saying something positive and I'm just not understanding you. Have a great day. Rick
Hello, I'm looking to get an inreach but not sure which. Currently I hike and fish by myself a lot in the mountains. Next year I'm looking to get into back country hunting, camping, and maybe free diving. The voice and picture messages seem really convenient and I'm usually navigating off of my phone. But I also am a big believer in having a backup just in case. So I'm kind of torn between the mini 2 and the messenger plus. Any help is greatly appreciated
That’s me too except the diving
The Messenger Plus is a great device and it's nice that it can also now navigate, besides being great at communication. The reason I like the Mini 2 over the Messenger Plus is that you can do more with navigation on the device itself rather than having to be synced to your smartphone with the Messenger Plus. Honestly, I would take a hard look at the GPSMAP 67i as it can do everything by itself without having to be synced to a smartphone. Here's my recommendation in order of priority. 1. Garmin GPSMAP 67i: amzn.to/3Zj6ZrC 2. Garmin inReach Mini 2: amzn.to/3CYbwIr 3. Garmin inReach Messenger Plus: amzn.to/4icQzJV As a side note. I own all three of these, so this recommendation is based on my field tests and how I like to use them. I hike a lot, camp, and fish here in Colorado. Let me know if you have any other questions or need additional advice. Rick
If you primarily drive, then you may want to take a look at the Garmin Montana 700 / 750i. My only issue with the Montana is that it is a large device that doesn't have as good of a battery compared to the 67i, Mini 2, and the Messenger Plus. Garmin Montana 750i: amzn.to/419GF5K Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
@@outdooremergencytechthe 67i definitely seems like a really good. Makes it slightly harder. Ill let you know what I ended up with!
Looking forward to hearing from you. Rick
Thank you very much. Very clear and definitive comparison!
Thanks for the thumbs up. Rick
Thank you very much for the great video and a very useful hint!
Glad to help. Rick
I’m pretty sure I already answered this. I have a Garmin 60 csx I bought like 20 years ago. Looking to upgrade this unit and hands down looks like the best option for me would be the 67i. Your thoughts.
The 67i is the best all-in-one satellite communicator on the market, in my opinion, and is my number one go-to satellite communicator when I head out to the mountains here in Colorado. Garmin GPSMAP 67i: amzn.to/3VhhqL2 Rick
I have a Montana 700i, but would like to get a Mini 2 for Moto Trips on a Dualsport to save weight in the Colorado Alpine Loop. Do I have to pay for 2 separate Garmin accounts to use both? I can’t easily switch InReach Account for each product?
You can use one subscription and switch between devices. I do this all the time as I decide what device to review or take with me on a trip. Garmin has also made it easier to switch between subscription in the field now with the Messenger App. See the link below for more information about switching devices with one subscription. ua-cam.com/video/CzCr-07pLtI/v-deo.html Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
What’s your opinion on extended warranties? I’m looking to buy the 67i. Thanks for the great videos!
I have never had any issues with any of my satellite communicators. These are expensive devices but I have never bought an extended warranty. Personally, I take my chances and most of the problems will present themselves when you first get the device. This is my experience and opinion but I hope this helps. Rick
@ Thanks Rick, I thought it would be wise to ask you since you’ve been testing and operating Garmin Satellite Communicators extensively.
Glad to help. Rick
All i want it for is live track for my family to follow me and friends but looks like they charging 10 cent for ever track ie ever 10 mintues i have to pay iam I wrong or misunderstood
They will charge you $0.10 for each track if you have the ESSENTIAL plan. You get unlimited live tracking if you have the STANDARD or PREMIUM plan. One way to save money is to switch to the ESSENTIAL or ENABLE plan when you won't be using live tracking, but then switch it to the STANDARD or PREMIUM plan when you need it. You can switch back and forth any time. Check out the link below if you need more information. www.garmin.com/en-US/p/837461 Let me know if you have additional questions. Rick

Personally, I will do a few different things. 1. I'll look on the 67i map or on the computer on the Explore.Garmin map page and look for trails in the area I'm interested. 2. I'll use AllTrails to do my trail research and then either import the trail from AllTrails to my Garmin device, or I'll create a course of my own if a trail or combination of trails on AllTrails doesn't fit what I want. Many times, after using one of the two methods above, I'll create the course on my 67i so it's ready when I get to the trail. Let me know if you have other questions. Rick
Thank you so much for the prompt reply. I'll look into how to import an all trails map as I use those all the time I played around with the Garmin explore app on my computer, but so far it's not that intuitive for me Thanks, again great video. I've watched it multiple times learned something every time.
Always glad to help. Rick
You are missing to show how to set units. nautical miles, knots etc.
Good point. I'll add that for an upcoming shoot. Rick
Radios like Ham and GMRS are an interesting option since they don't have monthly fees, their range can be amplified with repeaters, they can be handheld or a more powerful version can be mounted in a vehicle. In addition, GMRS can transmit GPS location and text messaging. It also looks like there are handheld ham radios that can send your location if you use an APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System). This is all info I pieced together from watching UA-cam videos on Ham Radio Crash Course and reading the GMRS about page for GMRS. So I would definitely love to see more on radios from this channel since Ham Radio Crash Course doesn't have updated videos that are either dedicated to radios for hiking or contain detail info on radios for hiking.
Great points. This is something I will begin covering soon. I live in Colorado and have some of my family here so we'll have multiple radios from handhelds, and portables with base stations coming sometime in 2025. This is something I have been wanting to begin covering for awhile. Rick
@@outdooremergencytech Looking forward to 2025. Thank you
I hope the Garmin Messenger Plus goes on sale this year, but I am doubtful since it just came out this year. I have been checking for sales and so far nothing. Not even REI's 20% coupon works on it.
crap. didn't realize the spot was 1-way. thanks for the video!
Glad to help. The Gen 4 is 1-way but the SPOT X is 2-way. Rick
Can the 67i be used for water adventures as well or just land based ones
You can use it anywhere in the world, including over water, but the gpsmap 86sci is meant for water use as it floats and has access to BlueChart G3 coastal charts. GPSMAP 67i: amzn.to/4fN9KZ2 GPSMAP 86sci: amzn.to/3B1OBLB Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
