    This is like buying a drone for $400 and then the drone company charging you a monthly fee so you can fly it.

    • @outdooremergencytech

      That's one way to look at it, but the drone company does not provide continuous service for SOS, messaging, tracking, and weather forecasts through satellites, so it's not a fair comparison. Rick

    Thanks for this test! As predicted the Messenger Plus does not have any usable local tracking. The poor trackback was a big surprise. I think that my 66i serves me well going forward before Garmin updates GPSMAP-series or Mini-series with the new messaging tech. The 66i is battery hungry when tracking but I can manage with enough power banks on hike.

    • @jpnurminen
      @jpnurminen 3 дні тому

      One additional note. I have had no issues with 66i internal recording, on the device or synced to Explore. I always do two things when starting my day. Start the device early so that it can aquire GPS signal and clear any recorded path just before start tracking/activity recording.

    This is very helpful. Could you do a video that shows the difference between mapshare and checking in tracking. For example, I turned on my tracking but didn't share my mapshare link. I thought that tracking on meant it would show my track to the person (wife) I use the check in feature with the lat and long plus link to map showing my "tracking" but it doesn't. I think a video on this would be helpful for beginners like me. Thanks

    if the cells towers go down does it still works

    • @outdooremergencytech
      @outdooremergencytech 5 днів тому

      Cell phones won't work, but Satellite Communicators, Ham Radios, and Satellite Phones will work as they don't rely on cellphone technology. The bigger question is if there's a regional power outage and the satellite communicator companies servers go down. Will satellite communicators work then? That answer is no and this is the reason I recommend having a ham radio or a satellite phone in addition to a satellite communicator. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    • @outdooremergencytech
      @outdooremergencytech 3 дні тому

      It also depends on if you have a cell phone that will message with satellites. My iPhone 14 has the newest operating system (18) and it now can communicate without cell service. A lot is changing so this information is likely to change. Rick

    I do live in Western North Carolina. My power was out for 7 days along with my Internet. My cell service was out for 8 days. My driveway was blocked and with my left arm in a cast, I was pretty helpless. No one could call or email me and I couldn't call or get out of my driveway. Thankfully I own one of the Garmin devices with the InReach satellite network. I was able to use that to let people know I was okay as well as ask a friend to help me clear my driveway. So for sure, I'm glad I own this thing. Great video. Now I'll have to check with Mint Mobile to see how their plans work.

      I want to say no, but I'm going to be careful here and test this tomorrow, Friday. I will test the internal tracking on the 67i, the Mini 2, followed by the Messenger Plus. Hummmm, you're right but did you buy that device for emergencies or just to stay in touch - they are VASTLY different applications. In fact, I'd be willing to bet my house on the fact that the average Joe Shcleb who buys and owns a Satellite Messenger device will never ever get in to a situation where they are off-grid seriously and need to be rescued. They don't do anything serious enough that would warrant a true emergency. 99.99% of the people who buy them just wanna stay in touch, that's really the REAL application for these units for most people. That's perfectly fine of course but they are markets as a emergency rescue beacon. So the ease of use thing only applies in one situation for your average user. It’s like people who buy $100,000 SUV’s to drive from the house in the Hamptons to the office downtown, they have it but they’ll never use it.

    • @outdooremergencytech
      @outdooremergencytech 8 днів тому

      You're probably right about most users, but most everyone I know here in Colorado go on some serious multi-day hikes, hunting, fishing, or 4-wheeling where they are outside of cell service a lot. For me, I'm out all the time in Colorado, outside of cell service for the majority of the time as I go off-road away from civilization. Some people want a back up communication device if there is a major emergency, such as with a hurricane. My position is to always be prepared and have more than one way to communicate. Thanks for your thoughts and comments. I always like to engage people, as I often learn something. Rick

    A few more differences is the battery life on the messenger plus and the slightly faster messaging due to the larger antenna and higher power output. But those likely fall into the technical details category. Great simple comparison. I'm interested to see how long these devices stay relevant once cell carriers like T-mobile start to offer starlink capabilities.

QUESTION: Do you think I should upgrade to two 67i ? As the older explorer plus is in BH new old stock and may have internals that are not as good to use to text each other. I like that these do not require a phone to navigate and that the devices do not require a second device. Just wanted your opinion on what I should use. Thanks for all you share. Scott

      Personally, I like the GPSMAP 67i the best because you can do everything on the device without needing it to be synced to a smartphone. You can still sync it for convenience but you don't have to. I like the Mini 2 and the Messenger Plus a lot but you need to sync them to a smartphone to get some of the features. In a serious emergency, I want the 67i and have a way to recharge it in case that emergency goes on longer than a week. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick

    That is correct you need a subscription. The subscriptions needs to be active or basically you have a paperweight. I didn’t like the idea of a subscription but when you weigh it against what could possibly happen in the wilderness whether it’s broken ankle, animal attack or a medical emergency, the flight cost is $60k so really spending $39 to activate $39 a year or month/$480 annually. Seems like a small price.

      I agree. Unless governments decide to help pay for some basic life saving services, private companies have to make money. There are ways for people to save money on subscriptions with Garmin. You can suspend a monthly account when not using it and on an annual plan, you can switch to a less expensive plan when not using it. Thanks for the comment. Rick

    Looks like a pretty useful little tool. I just placed an order for the Solar. I keep seeing comments criticizing the concept... but for its intended purpose as strictly a navigation tool with potentially unlimited battery life.. I think it's a pretty neat design. Satellite communication is nice, but not sure if I want to bother with subscription services or anything like that.

    The tech really is advancing at a rapid pace. The new Google and iPhone have all of these features built in. Things like geo locating photos you've taken is a smartphone's bread and butter.

      You are correct. It's going to be interesting to see how fast technology advances and what happens to the satellite communicator industry. The bottom line is that there will always be a market for people who go on longer outdoor adventures and want rugged devices, but there are going to be a lot of changes in the next several years. You make some valid points with Garmin maps but I use HuntOnX and only use Zoleo to check in and communicate two way for remote hunts. I use check in for map sharing.

    I agree with you on Active Weather. As a retired Air Force Pilot and active Southwest First Officer, there should be no reason you should have to be in "Cell Service" to get the current radar picture with layers (clouds/winds aloft, etc...,) overlayed onto your 67i maps. Garmin should make this available to come thru the Satellite network versus the cellular network. Eventually--they will get there..., most likely at a higher subscription cost to the consumer.

    Wow!! Your outdoor tutorials for the Garmin 67i are absolutely amazing and extensive! I am upgrading to the 67i from the older GPSmap 64st tonite. I know the absolute basics but I look really forward to watching every tutorial you have made to really get to know this amazing unit very well. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to produce these phenomenal instructional videos--reference quality..., that even Garmin couldn't ever produce. Rock On!

      Thank you. I want to be clear for anyone else who may be reading this. You can't make calls. You can only send messages and receive them. I'm sure you meant message, but I want to make sure no one else gets confused. Yes, you can send and receive messages from the device without being synced with your smartphone. I have tested this a lot and there is a video below where I did just that. It's not as easy, but you can do it. So here’s my question, I just bought an iPhone 16 Pro Max with satellite communication capabilities. Is there a reason I should keep my garment in reach unit? That is costing me $25 a month where my iPhone is not costing me anything for satellite service to emergency services or even text messaging. And by the way, I have gone out in areas with no cell service , sent and received messages perfectly with no issues. So again I’m wondering why I should keep my Garmin inreach unit. Any input?

    • @outdooremergencytech
      @outdooremergencytech 13 днів тому

      With advances in technology, this will become a common question. My advice is based on how you will use it. If you're a day hiker, as an example, and you're not out for long periods of time, then you may be fine going without a satellite communicator. You need to test this out. I would go out and take the satellite communicator but leave it off and see if you really would never need it. If you're into more rugged outdoor adventures and long outdoor trips, I would recommend having a rugged device with a better battery life. Cell phone are not made to the same standards for rugged use and the battery will run down a lot faster so again, I think it really depends on what type of adventures you go on. I hope this helps. Let me know what you decide and if you have any other questions. Rick

      Keep the Garmin as a backup on the enabled plan for $7.99 month to keep the SOS feature. You can pay a small fee for messages etc. Keep this until Apple provides their subscription costs after the 2 year period. Then make the decision whether to keep.

      Thanks for this info!! I had the same question re: iPhones allowing their sat capabilities not only to SOS, but in general (for texting). Is this feature only available on the NEW iPhone? I’m JUST now purchasing up to 4 In-Reach (predominantly use for sat messenging when no wifi or cell service), though may also use for navigation, but not MAIN purpose. I was under the impression we were still a way away from having the sat text capabilities on iPhones?? Sounds like not the case? Perhaps I should stop the Garmin purchases?? We have iPhone 11 and 13s. May need to upgrade to latest iPhone, but put funds towards that vs. the Garmin devices??

      My initial thoughts on the Mini 2 vs Messenger Plus: Mini 2 - Better for serious hikers and backpackers. - Not as important to sync to your smartphone. Messenger Plus - Better for campers and people with RVs who don't need to navigate but want to 2-way message. I'll shoot the video this week and break this down more. Rick

    It seems that the intent of the GPS unit is trending away from its ability to operate without being tethered to a cell phone. Being that this unit relies so heavily on being connected to a phone it makes me ponder the point.

      The 67i is one of the few devices that does not need to be synced in order to use all of it's functions. The 67i is my favorite satellite communicator for precisely this point. You can sync it, but you don't need to. The Mini 2 is slightly different in that you need to sync it to your smartphone to get most all the features that the 67i has to offer. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
