Like finasteride, once you stop saw palmetto the benefits will stop - so if you have a tendency to hair thinning that will start back up again. But it sounds like you don't have hair loss in your family (particularly your mother's father's side?) it should not be a problem for you. 2. No, if you stop saw palmetto it just reverts to your baseline. 3. Actually, it sounds like you are doing a great job with fish oil and saw palmetto! I'm a big believer in getting nutrients from your diet rather than supplements if possible. If you want to take a men's multivitamin that contains zinc, vitamin d and iron - that will help your hair. I don't have a particular brand preference, but you get what you pay for with supplements. Fish oil has great omega 3 content, which is great for your hair, so nice choice there.

I will go a step further: no one would even do such a study because there are two types of 5AR enzyme, type I and II, involved in the conversion of testosterone to DHT, and saw palmetto, at best had some blocking ability of 5AR type II IN VITRO, not in vivo...So, you can obviously see my problem why there are no real studies, and why 99.9999% of people can't see improvements with serenoa repens... The problem doesn't end at enzyme level...obviously or genes, but starts at the gene expressions, or epigenetics... I hope you know what I mean? :-)

You may want to read the Centrum multivitamin ingredient list and do some research about what exactly are all those fillers and colors and where are the cheap ingredients sourced from. I know that it's a lot of work, but you owe it to yourself to find the highest quality supplements (you may have to pay a little more too).

I tried saw Palmetto for HL and I had to stop URGENTLY because I was feeling nauxious and woke up in the middle of the night throwing up. the fact that it has an impact on DHT level and thus on the brain (don remember the exact name of the hormone hypophysis?)...this is not for me ..
Anything's possible, I'm not sure if you would get the effect you are after. I don't like mixing meds too much, just because of interactions and not knowing what is causing what. On the flipside, I don't think it would cause much harm.
My mom messed up her hormonal balance from taking too high of a dosage, while I can take a much higher dose without any side effects. Women need to be careful with it.

Hi Faheem, I'd recommend to use one or the other personally so that you know what is working and what is not. If you really want to combine treatments, you can use saw palmetto with topical minoxidil. But I would not advise to use both finasteride and saw palmetto together. There's evidence that Saw Palmetto is helpful, but each person will find it different in whether it is beneficial.

Hi there, your question is a wee bit tricky. I'd first check to make sure your thyroid levels are ok and TSH is nice and stable. You could have a general hormone check at the same time to see what your FSH is doing? It's always best to double check as assumptions are easy to make about cause. But in terms of trying saw palmetto, I don't think I'd have many objections, in terms of interactions with levothyroxine. If anything Saw Palmetto may reduce estrogen which may or may not cause you symptoms.

Hi there, completely up to you. You could use Biotin and Fish oil initially, add in Saw Palmetto. There isn't particular rules on when you should start and stop these in relation to Minoxidil.
if your hair loss cause by DHT then Sabal Serrulata 6x or 30CH aka Saw Palmetto in 480mg with Bamboo Extract (70% organic silica), fish oil and biotin with Green Tea extract and Pea Sprout Extract will work wonders for you. if you're in initial stage of alopecia.
You need to take finasteride permanently in order to order to maintain your hair. I am sure that the same is true for Saw Palmetto because it's also a DHT inhibitor. The other drug she mentioned is dutasteride. Dutasteride is a more powerful drug than finasteride in preventing hair loss, but finasteride is FDA approved, and dutasteride is not.
saw palmetto indeed work but it always depended on how much pure extract you can get from it. You have to use more potent and high efficacy form of saw palmetto. I'd suggest Sabal Serrulata 6x or 30CH potency in 480mg for proper effect.

I know this is a tough one - I do understand why you feel confused! Saw Palmetto has not been shown to result in Post-Finasteride Syndrome - but the actions of SP are similar to Finasteride, so there is always a risk. I can't tell you what to do, but I'd weigh up the risks and benefits before starting. Would you consider topical treatments, like Minoxidil, instead if you are feeling concerned?

That's probably a good dose Asim. See how you go on it for a month. If you needed you can increase it up to 320mg

While I enjoy your enthusiasm Dr. Sam, about natural treatments for pattern baldness there is no randomized, double-blind, study I'm aware of, that compared the levels of hormone DHT in hair follicles of those taking saw palmetto vs placebo... Just to quote you: "... if it is not randomized, double-blind study, it is not science..." I agree... I will go a step further: no one would even do such a study because there are two types of 5AR enzyme, type I and II, involved in the conversion of testosterone to DHT, and saw palmetto, at best had some blocking ability of 5AR type II IN VITRO, not in vivo...So, you can obviously see my problem why there are no real studies, and why 99.9999% of people can't see improvements with serenoa repens...
The problem doesn't end at enzyme level...obviously or genes, but starts at the gene expressions, or epigenetics... I hope you know what I mean? :-)

You may want to read the Centrum multivitamin ingredient list and do some research about what exactly are all those fillers and colors and where are the cheap ingredients sourced from. I know that it's a lot of work, but you owe it to yourself to find the highest quality supplements (you may have to pay a little more too).

I tried saw Palmetto for HL and I had to stop URGENTLY because I was feeling nauxious and woke up in the middle of the night throwing up. the fact that it has an impact on DHT level and thus on the brain (don remember the exact name of the hormone hypophysis?)...this is not for me ..

Anything's possible, I'm not sure if you would get the effect you are after. I don't like mixing meds too much, just because of interactions and not knowing what is causing what. On the flipside, I don't think it would cause much harm.

Hi Faheem, I'd recommend to use one or the other personally so that you know what is working and what is not. If you really want to combine treatments, you can use saw palmetto with topical minoxidil. But I would not advise to use both finasteride and saw palmetto together.
There's evidence that Saw Palmetto is helpful, but each person will find it different in whether it is beneficial.

Hi there, your question is a wee bit tricky. I'd first check to make sure your thyroid levels are ok and TSH is nice and stable. You could have a general hormone check at the same time to see what your FSH is doing? It's always best to double check as assumptions are easy to make about cause.
But in terms of trying saw palmetto, I don't think I'd have many objections, in terms of interactions with levothyroxine. If anything Saw Palmetto may reduce estrogen which may or may not cause you symptoms.

Spironolactone is a blood pressure medication, that is also used for hair loss in women, and facial hair growth. It's not used for acne.

Hi there, completely up to you. You could use Biotin and Fish oil initially, add in Saw Palmetto. There isn't particular rules on when you should start and stop these in relation to Minoxidil.
If your hair loss is not caused by DHT then saw palmetto won't do anything
if your hair loss cause by DHT then Sabal Serrulata 6x or 30CH aka Saw Palmetto in 480mg with Bamboo Extract (70% organic silica), fish oil and biotin with Green Tea extract and Pea Sprout Extract will work wonders for you. if you're in initial stage of alopecia.

You need to take finasteride permanently in order to order to maintain your hair. I am sure that the same is true for Saw Palmetto because it's also a DHT inhibitor. The other drug she mentioned is dutasteride. Dutasteride is a more powerful drug than finasteride in preventing hair loss, but finasteride is FDA approved, and dutasteride is not.

I know this is a tough one - I do understand why you feel confused! Saw Palmetto has not been shown to result in Post-Finasteride Syndrome - but the actions of SP are similar to Finasteride, so there is always a risk. I can't tell you what to do, but I'd weigh up the risks and benefits before starting. Would you consider topical treatments, like Minoxidil, instead if you are feeling concerned?
