Yes ! I agree, too. The great Don Myrick, (r. i. p.) with his alto sax and superb solo in this live version of the classic theme 'Reasons' from the wonderful live album Gratitude.
I’m an old time geezer rocker that’s been to hundreds of concerts and saw EW&F in the mid 70’s and it was definitely one of the most memorable shows I’ve ever seen. Total pros.
I grew up in the projects in Boyle Heights (East LA) and gangsters would listen to Oldies and this song. I heard them play it all the Summer of ‘75. Later, September was voted my Jr. High Class Song 1979. I bought EW&F’s Greatest Hits Vol. 1 and SEVEN other EW&F albums including “Gratitude” and 1979’s “I Am”. I used to tease my neighbor from 3 doors down that his name is Will I am and flash him the album. Today, it’s his professional name. He’s in the Black Eyed Peas.
Once at age 17 ... I could sing this flawless while studying for my exams ... now at age 61 it cracks me up when my voice cracks up ... yet still the song cracks me up ... way up ... best album ever !
When i heard this version of Reason it blew me away!! Mr.Don Mirreck on the sax made this song so memorable. I alway look foward to hearing him even to this day takes me back to the very moment i first his solo . I was so blown away . Listening to it just made me feel the moment as if i was there listening to it
THE CLASSIC SLOW JAM OF ALL TIME by Mr. Philip Bailey!!!! It doesn't get ANY better than THIS!!! Thank you EWF, Maurice and of course MR. PHILIP BAILEY!!
Let me preface this post by declaring right up front: I'm a white guy, age sixty. But, should it really matter, even in these times of strife? This is, far and away, IMO THE best double LP ever recorded (Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" a distant second. IMO). I was a high tenor in my choir, so I had slim chance to reach Phillip Bailey highest note here. And I did, finally match it. For about five weeks. It killed my voice, but to follow the best? It was worth every note and every second of nearly breathless effort. When it comes to singing, and the pure pleasure thereof, those few weeks were worth losing everything I loved about it, and lost after. As I said, it was worth it. One of the real highlights, known only to me (except for those reading it here, too)...of my life. I will never regret having lost it...for having experienced the pinnacle. For a short time. And there are "Sun Goddess"...and "New World Symphony," to follow.... It just can't get any better than this. Pass it on to those of those generations who follow you. I will do my best to do so too.
I agree with most of what you said, except Stevie's "Songs in the key of life" a Distant second, I would say a pretty close second. I love both of them and they were a major part of the musical soundtracks of my teens and twenties. Continue to enjoy the music, as I am doing. :-)
@@cynthialewis3785 You pointed out my goof, and thank you for that. I meant to say (but whiffed), that "Gratitude" is the best LIVE double LP ever recorded. Yeah. just a bit different, and I can only blame myself for that. "Songs in the Key of Life" is tight, polished, and set a standard rarely, if ever* equaled even today. "Gratitude" is, simply by virtue of being largely a live (one take only) performance going forever to be judged in part on that LIVE standard...but it will also be measured against other studio "Double LP's "(Albums) just because it was that good. Which is what brings in the comparison. And of and on which I stepped up to the tee...and whiffed. Apologies, dear lady. Still, "Gratitude" is well atop my own personal charts, live or not, studio or not. Even with Gratitude, at least one side of the two discs was studio tracks only, as best I remember.
@@cynthialewis3785 And I will amend my comment, thanks to you. "Gratitude" and "Reasons" was, for me, a solo thing. It was not an effort I ever made in front of an audience, though Phillip Bailey so easily did. No one but me ever heard me try for the reach, and it would have been laughable. But I made it. Finally. "Songs in the Key of Life" is a very different thing. It was all studio. But Stevie made the most of studio, while EWF did not. Frankly, most of EWF's studio work--LP's--pales in comparison. But what make THIS concert--this double LP soar--is that it was LIVE. And they nailed it.
Gratitude is a live album and Songs in the key of life is a studio album hard to compare against each other , more songs have been covered on Songs in the key of life than Gratitude. Stevie played most of the instruments too
I had this album when it first came out - Double album set -with all of the pictures from the concerts that made up the live album of them onstage. inside of the covers. I wish I still had it. Verdine White on that bass. That sax solo.
This jam speaks to my heart and soul! I NEVER EVER TIRE OF IT! Love the alto sax! "It's all about love"! My all time FAVORITE GROUP! ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG! Sing it Phillip Baley 😍❤❤❤❤
This live version is one of the baddest live renditions of a studio recorded song ever, It also must be said that it is made for more dramatic and dynamic impact while the original studio version is far better suited for the beautiful romantic intimacies of the bedroom. Ironically, this song also has far more to do with the urges and trappings of infidelity (all our illusions are just a parade) than long term love and romance. Regardless of the version, this song represents E&F at their very best. Thanks for posting!

After all our reasons love was left aside

Oddly, “Reasons” (1975) is a popular wedding R&B ballad although it is actually about a one-night stand : “I’m longing to love you just for a night.”
