Extras is the most cringe-worthy show of all time. It's absolutely brilliant and I love it, but every episode just makes me squirm when Maggie repeats something Andy said to someone and makes it awkward, or when Andy pulls stuff like this haha. So awkward.
The brilliance of Andy is that he keeps getting thrust into situations that he believes are beneath him without realising that (a) you can actually make the most of such situations with open-mindedness and (b) he’s in no position to be picky.
The way gervais plays this is fantastic. He tries to act hard and butch to his mates in the audience but still tries to act the part on the play- omg so funny.

I wasn't talking about the actual plot of the play but how it turned out with Ricky not agreeing to go with the script and instead revealing the rest of the plot and reassuring the audience of his heterosexuality.
In most episodes, I felt genuinely sorry for Andy Millman, regarding him as a sincere and thoughtful actor-writer with integrity, who was caught up in situations out of his control, but in this instance he was absolutely in the wrong, and demonstrated how unprofessional he was. Who cared what his former schoolmates thought? They all look like a bunch of slapheaded Gary Boy thugs anyway. I'm amazed that Andy wanted anything to do with them, and one can usually judge a person by the company they keep. Andy should have been a professional and committed 100% to the production. If he felt unable to do that, perhaps acting was not for him. Actors who care more about what others may think, than the integrity of the work they're supposedly invested in, aren't true artists, and deserve to be ousted from the business, to make way for people who *are* truly committed to their craft. 😠👊🏿

To be fair, the Christmas Special ripped him apart and exposed him for doing just that the entire time. It's both sad but also deserving, especially when he finally loses Maggie after being such a selfish prick for so long.
@@Jacksonrox13 This is very true, but I felt that the Christmas episode took a different turn with the narrative, after the first and particularly the second season had mostly asked us to sympathise with Andy and his frustration in trying to do something that had some integrity. That said, I do like that the show doesn't go entirely easy on Andy, and that it suggests that he's a bit of a pompous ass who doesn't have the courage of his convictions.
Good acting is good acting, on stage or screen. Yes, you have to project so you can be heard clearly at the back, but whether you're doing Shakespeare or Stoppard, a good actor will make it sound natural.
