I am the great great granddaughter of Con and Matthew s line directly. I live in NZ and am one of the Spanish Habsburg O'Neills .They thought my grandfather was dead after the earthquake in Lisbon but not so.They hid him and took him to Cork. His son came to NZ . I have found my Grandfathers story he told me when I was five to be true and am very proud to be an O'Neill.

I always refer to it as Tulach Óg and it could mean the "Hill of Youth" or the "Hill of the Warrior". It was once the inauguration place of the UíTuirtre Chieftains the O'Flynn's and the Chieftains of the Federation of Oriel. When the UíTuirtre lost the territory to the ever expanding Hy Neill clans they took the original stones of the 'Wizards Chair' with them and reinstalled them at their new inauguration place on Dunmull Hill in Dál Riada (Antrim). The 'Wizards Chair' remained at Dunmull until the Anglo Normans arrived and relocated it.

The O'neill's have been glorified in history. However, there has been plenty of historians who argued they heavily taxed their subjects to fund their lifestyle and endless battles with other families, ruled with an iron fist, and the plantations were in effect a liberalisation of Tyrone. Protestant undertakers were very willing to take on catholic tenants who paid rent rather than relentless taxes.

@@finneire2081 Yes, its completely nonsense the idea that they were some glorious Irish family dynasty for a beautiful era that abruptly ended. They were arrogant and ruthless. On the plus side, their descendent Hugh Dubh O'neil handed Cromwell's army their biggest casualties and forced a retreat on Day 1 in Clonmel! Unfortunately for him, he was too low on ammunition for Day 2, so he slipped out the back!
