- An Lámh Dhearg, the red hand of Ulster, is a famous symbol of Northern Ireland. And it’d be hard to find a more dramatic object to put on a flag.
But the roots of the Hand are tied to a mysterious origin story that may go back as far as pagan times in Ireland.
The icon itself is quite literally a red hand, palm facing the viewer, fingers pointed upwards. Usually it is a right hand, but in some variations a left hand is used.
As a documented heraldic emblem, the red hand first appears in the 13th century. However, historians don't really know the exact origin or reasoning for how the symbol of the hand came to be. In this video, Erik recounts the history and the exciting legend of how the Red Hand of Ulster came to be.

As an O'Neill, I love this story... I've heard slightly different versions but love them all
What I have problems understanding is whether the ONeill were with the English or against the English ... the Red hand symbol on our crest confuses me based on the history

@brendaoneill1581 Most definitely against,the myth itself had symbolism,it was turned facing upward after the defeat,as asposed to facing down,taking away the claim of ownership of Neil.Some of our kin fled South or to Portugal,others bent the knee.There is a little known myth far beyond the matters of men.But everyone will have to find it for themselves.Never kneel!

At one time for sure they seen themselves as British peoples trading, living and traveling between Ireland and Britain was the norm. Even fighting with Britons from GB against the Gaels (and losing). Thereafter the tables seem to turn, having been defeated they had no other choice but to follow the new Gael command and overtime that put them in conflict with Britons particularly from Scotland.

Fun side bar: Owen Roe was a war chief of the O’Neill clan. There is an Oregon winery named Owen Roe with a tasty red blend named Sinister Hand. The label of Sinister stand features a drawing of a gauntleted left hand with drops of blood dripping from it.
I've noticed this sort of thing in the USA when I was there for a few months. As a Gaelic Irishman it's actually a very nice thing to see those homages to our ancient culture such as you described. Irish Americans often get a hard appraisal from their cousin's in Ireland but I've always felt it fascinating how the Irish Gaelic identity in many modified forms is so strongly represented across the Atlantic. We say in Ireland we are a European country that never had an empire, although St Patrick's Day in Boston made me reconsider that saying.

One possible connection I have recently come to hear is that the red hand come from the line of the tribe of Judah. The red hand was used by Zarah. Also along with this story is the connection with Tephi, queen of Tara and Gibraltar.

It's a famous symbol from Ireland rather than the modern region of Northern Ireland.
It's also the symbol of the 'Irish Transport and General Workers' Union' formed in 1909.
The Book of Leinster (compiled in the 12th Century) contains one of the earliest written references to the Red Hand in the legendary Lugaid Lámderg (Red Hand) of the Dál gCais who ruled the southern half of Ireland.
Whether the story is true or not, it is still a great tale, and great tales are still being told to this day.
Good story and I've heard this myth before. Properly put in context in the closing summary in that it probably originated in the 17th century, when Gaelic Ireland was being effectively supplanted. One more bit of evidence to question it is that Irish kings were disqualified if they were physically disabled or diminished... thus blinding was a very effective manner of eliminating rivals for clan leadership.

There is a piobaireachd called The Red Hand in the MacDonald's Arms, as I was told when I learned this tune, the legend as you explained it, was the boat race. The tune is actually very gripping once you know the story as you told it. The first three variations are introductions to the 3 favored winners of the race. The next variations (6 total) are played up beat & tempo, that's the race itself. Then, a change occurs, the tune turns into a mourning and tour of perplexity as it enters into the Tarluath & Tarluath Doubling, into the Crenluath & Cren-Amach. Which is the sad contemplation of what this great warrior was willing to do to claim the right. I play this tune on the pipes and have a recording on You-Tube (somewhere).

Great story and you're right, the red hand insignia does indeed date back to the pagan kings of Ulster but it certainly hasn't, or at least historically, hadn't anything to do with the O'Neills who are in fact Gaelic and originate from the Iberian Peninsula, modern day Spain. The hand is mentioned in several ancient manuscripts and always in relation to the Cruthin. These native people shared an ancient kinship with Scotland and when medieval writers referred to the Cruthin, it is clear they considered them to inhabit both Ireland and Scotland. The Annals of Tigernach, the Pictish Chronicle, St Berchan, the Albanic Duan, the Book of Deer and John of Fordun plainly show that the name Cruthin was applied to the inhabitants of both Scotland and Ulster. Outside of the annals, the earliest mention of the Red Hand is an early-15th-century poem by Mael Ó hÚigínn named Lámh dhearg Éireann í Eachach, the first line of which is a variation of the title: "Lamh dhearg Éiriond Ibh Eathoch" translated as "The Úí Eachach are the 'Red Hand' of Ireland". The Uí Eachach were one of the Cruthin tribes known as the Dál nAraidi after the 6th century that made up the ancient kingdom of Uladh.
There is no archaeological or anthropological evidence for the cruithin myth. This was created by British Planters who originated from Wales, England, and the West of Scotland during the plantation. The symbol is Gaelic Irish.

I've never heard this story before, thank you for telling it, it reminds me of Nuada. Interesting parallel, while he lost his kingship because of the loss of his hand sacrifice, O'Neill gain one.
Read the book about Jeremiah and the Stone of Scone. And it leads back to the story of King Judah in Genesis about him having twins through his daughter in Tamia. When she was giving birth Zerah stuck his hand out. The midwife tide a red string around his hand and the Perez came out fully first but Zerah was considered the first born. It represents that the High Kings of Ulster descendants of the Kingly lineage of King Judah of Jerusalem, Israel.

I heard a similar story from my grandfather (McNeils of Barra). I'll try to keep this short but it was set sometime in the 700s? The Norse were doing their annual sacking route across the Scottish isles and there was a great sea battle. One warrior, Orm was engaged in combat on one of the ships and had his leg hacked off at the knee, he lunged at the Scot and crushed his back with a bear-hug and was bandaged up, the day was won. The sea king told his men, "The first man to set foot on the shore of the mainland will become lord of it" (I don't know if there were lords, caretaker? I don't know). The men raced ashore, but Orm was clever and threw his dismembered leg far ahead of the other man and it landed on the shore, so he was awarded the title. He stayed and settled the town of Ormskirk and built their first church.
The red leg of Ulster doesn't have the same ring to it. 😂
As a first timer hearing both stories, un-stained by the pull of familiarity and tradition, I hate to say, but the leg story is the one I pick. There are good sacrifices, and not so good of sacrifices, and in the leg story, he was downright resourceful. In the hand story, it came off to me as power-hungry to an ill extent...sorry to tamper with tradition, but hey. You gotta look at motives.

There is a very cute little horse barn near where I live with a sign on it that says Red Hand Stable and there is a red hand in 3-D on it. I painted a picture of it, but did not clearly write that name on it since it looked kind of...bloody. I was telling a 94 year old man about it and he told me the story of the red hand! However he said it was two Viking ships heading for some land, but the rest he has accurately. How interesting!
Im an O'Neill. We have this on our crest. I had heard the boat race story and another that one of the high kings (an O'Neill) would send his mercenaries to collect the hand of his enemies as proof ofntheir death.
So, he was declared the "hands down winner"....? Or, was it simply "hand".....?
Interesting and great to see an interest in this little part of the world however, the red hand insignia is an ancient Cruthin symbol, Cruthin referring to the indigenous/native peoples of what is now Ireland. (Cruthin basically translates to painted people in Gaelic). The insignia is mentioned in the ancient annals and is associated with the Uladh (Ulstermen) who historically defended Ulster from the Spanish Gaels (modern Irish), those same Gaels whom the O'Neils trace their lineage. The O'Neill's later usurped the insignia, much like the land, and rewrote history to suppress the Cruthin culture.
I am tired at the amount of times I have had to correct people over the years. The word Cruthin does NOT NOT NOT mean painted people. It means the wheat growers/people. Not so sexy...but that is the truth. The word in modern Irish and also Scots Gaelic is Cruithean.....and P Celtic/Welsh version is Pretani. Do you recognised the word Pretani?

I had heard of another alternative origin story for the Red Hand that involved breach birth during which a Red Hand emerged, to be tied then to a cord, subsequently used to affect the birth of the child, who became the founder of a great bloodline. To this end, the Red Hand should be rightly displayed surrounded by a cord lariat. I received this story in traditional Celtic fashion, orally at a Celtic Festival, 30 years ago. Sketchy, I know. Apparently there was some additional connection to the use of the Star of David in Irish symbolism. Has anyone heard of this alternative story?

Yes, it's the Biblical story of Judah's Twins. The cord was used to identify which twin emerged first, and thus the heir.

People got around in those days. It is thought that there is a strong possibility that the many stone henge-type earthworks on the continants bordering the Atlantic may not be about religion after all, but about the peoples in those areas using them to judge when it was safe to travel the Atlantic. It is thought that Mulek (there are other spellings of this title, meaning "king" or "prince"), the son of Zedekiah travelled to Ireland then on to the area near the Michigan copper mines, and that the prophet Jeremiah may have accompanied him as far as Ireland--this is only a possibility as far as us known. They weren't discovered by others in the area around the Great lakes for some time, but when meeting up by chance, he identified himself as the son of King Zedekiah. It sounds like Ireland was a land if refuge like the new promised land was, which in my belief, is the heartland of the USA, and for good reasons too detailed to go into here. They could have travelled much farther west from there, too. They spread quite far out. The red hand myth told here is one thing, but the story of the twins of Judah with the red string seems typical of the thinking of royals and rights, so I'm inclined to guess it might have started there, who knows. Just saying, people travel, and stories travel, and some history parts stick with truth, and others get swept into hiding, lost, embellished, romanticized, turning myth ir legend, when certain elements originated in true history. Here in the US, the Smithsonian has swept a dozen phoenecian ships, and skeletons of giants under the rug.

This is the same story my dad told me, that his mother told him. My grandmother was a Gillen and her mother or grandmother was an O’Neil. All the stories we have were passed down by word of mouth. Before my dad died he was doing research on our family history of the O’Neil. I’ve done some digging too, but I am drawn more towards the folklore and mythical side of things. Such as the O’Neil having our own named banshee. (Who also burned down Shane’s Castle out of anger)

Its different from the story of what we were taught in school or handed ✋ down through the generations it was actually a race of two brothers and the victory was of the red hand.
It was their father the initially started the race between the two brothers by saying the one who lays his hand on the ground first will be the victor.
The O'Neil or Neil of the Nine Hostages whom was King of Ulster is the one who brought Saint Patrick to Ireland and enslaved him.
Its also known that Saint Patricks sister married O'Neil son and bore a family together.
Lived here in Donegal within the Inishowen thereafter.

Pharez was the ancestor of Christ. The Red Hand is a claim that Zarah is the ancestor of the Ulster Scots.

Its hard to know whether those stories are true or not,but it can't be denied that it has become a potent symbol of defiance in ireland not just the north for example the irish citizen army used it in 1916 and both unionist and nationalist use it today.Basically these are our beliefs and we are prepared to cut off our hand for them whether its just for ulster ,unionism ,irish republicanism and socialism whatever those beliefs are the red hand is a very useful symbolic tool which can be used by any and every ideology.

Big Conn O'Neil, the chieftain of County Down at the turn of the 15/16th century as Elizabeth was busy subjugating Ireland, was captured and was being held in the prison at Carrickfergus. When James VI of Scotland ascended to the throne of England in 1603 as James I, he wanted to make Northern Ireland (Ulster) less Irish, and declared that the lands thereof would be given to Scots and English, who had to agree to build manor houses, and subdue and replace the Irish locals. Hugh Montgomery of Ayrshire helped O'Neil escape, in promise of receiving half of O'Neil's land.
Meanwhile, others in London had discovered the plan, and sought legal title to the same lands from James. When he granted same, the whole area was divided and subdivided, with Montgomery being essentially frozen out of his share by the London plotters. Confusing as it may be, the result was that over the next few years Ulster became Scottish in nature, as the locals were driven out. (See Native Americans, Treaties With) for similar situations.

The North Sea, is that an ancient name for what is now called the Irish sea? The sea between the east coast of Great Britain and Scandinavia is Called the North Sea. It is where the ancient land of Dogger land was, that joined the British Isles to Europe and Scandinavia back in prehistoric times.
The North Channel between East Northern Ireland and West Scotland used to be called The North Sea back in the day. They renamed it the North Channel when they realised there was a bigger North Sea
It's unlikely Ireland had a land-bridge to Britain as the Irish Sea is too deep to drop that far down even during the Ice Age. It's only Britain that was part of Europe via Doggerland.

Yes There is or was, its called the giants causeway and on the other side in scotlands is called something else they both made by the same exact type of rock and formations they both tourist spots to!!...its a folklore legend it goes like there was a ancient giant from the Irish isles fighting a ancient giant from the British/scots isles and they was trying to chuck boulders at each other across the sea, and where those boulders landed created the giants causeway..which can be contentious with rebulicans, as the story could be used in two ways and help or hinder in propaganda, its probably why they dont go down that rabbit hole and keep it obscure in using it as such...
@@wor53lg50 There is an island called Staffa with a feature called Fingal's Cave (Fionn mac Cumhaill in Irish) with a similar basalt feature as the Giant's causeway but they have never been connected. Look on a map of their locations and you'll see why.

The Clan crest of Clan Lamont (my Clan) has the right hand, similar to the Red Hand of Ulster, though not red. A family legend accounts for this by saying that Clan Lamont of Scotland was originally founded by people from Ulster in Ireland but there is no documented proof.

@@gigigiseleworld There are basically 4 groups of Celts, all of which date back to the early tribes that lived in those areas - the Irish, the Scots, the Welsh and the Galicians of Northern Spain. They all can trace their linage back before the birth of Christ (before 1 AD).

Hi there,so maybe someone could figure out where our Hand coats of arms came from.This is what we know.The “Hand” Coat of Arms and Crest was awarded to John Hand, born of Stanstead, County of Kent, England and one of nine original patentees of East Hampton, Long Island in 1648. The Coat of Arms is described as argent with a chevron azure between three (3) gules dexter hands. The Crest is described as a stag trippant. Additional information can be found in the “Matthews American Armoury and Blue Book” published by Heraldic Publishing Co. Inc., NY, 1965.
In the book Gen. of New Jersey it states: According to the records of Southampton, Long Island, the Hand family came originally from Stanstede, county Kent, England, and according to Judge Alfred Hand, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, their arms are:Argent, a chevron azure between three hands gules. Crest: On a wreath argent and a gules a buck trippant.

I have to say you are both correct, while the Cruithne inhabited the territories of Antrim and Down, or Dal Araidh, and Echach Cobha, intermarrying of Conall Cernach in the early pre historic peroid fused the bloodline of the Clanna Rudraige or the Ulaidh with the Cruithne.
Why is the Clanna Rudraige important? The Clanna Rudraige are known as the Craeob Ruadh, Craeob means Branch or Hand, while Ruadh means Red, thus we have the order of the red hand. A tribal dynasty solely active in ancient Ulaidh, which once stretched to the Boyne valley.
After the Ulaidh Cruithne confederacy made up of a Erainn and Cruithne peoples, not Goidils or Gaels, were defeated in the 2nd century, they were forced to retreat beyond the bounds of the Bann rivers, remaining an independent kingdom in Antrim, Down, Louth, East Armagh and part of Coleraine. The Dal Araidh became the Royal Rudrician line after the abandonment of Emain Macha, thus they do have some right to claim the red hand.
The Ui Neill have no right to claim the red hand as they were not of the Ulaid, thus not of the Craeob Ruadh, or the red hand sect which provided all of Ulsters ancient kings, as well as kings of Tara right until the 7th century, as we see with Congal Cáech, king of the Cruithne, the Ulaid and Tara in 637.
What you have presented in that post is basically speculation, mixed with a bit of mythology, also I’d say, quite heavily influenced by a political agenda. What you have presented is actually pseudo history. You have no more idea what actually happened in 2nd century Ireland, than I have.

You beat me to it! Yes, this was mentioned a good number of times in Old Irish literature. Any deformity -- even that caused by the caustic nature of a poet's satire -- would cast a King from the throne. It sounds less like a reference to Norse Tyr and more like an echo of Nuadu Airgetlam ("Nuadu of the Silver Hand", who lost his hand in a battle and it was replaced with an ingenious prosthetic).
O'Neill took part in a boat race?....but there was no such surname at that time....in fact there were NO SURNAMES. I love when Americans try and tell Irish stuff to the world....just makes our job all the more difficult.

Using the term "Northern" Ireland.....the named region didn't exist until 1921!! And the "Northern" Ireland flag became obsolete and defunct in the early 1970's.....i.e no such thing anymore. The symbol is Irish Gaelic.

The red hand had nothing to do with the Ui Neill clan, as the Ui Neill did not originate in Ulaidh. The red hand solely belonged to the Craeob Ruadh or the population group within the ancient Ulaidh that provided many kings of Ulster at Emain Macha. Craeob Ruadh means red branch and just as a brach extends out from a tree proving shade and cover, the Craeob Ruadh branch of warriors were the extending red arm that protected their ancient territory. O-Neills have no claim to the North unless we're talking about a medieval colonisation. They were never part of the Ulaidh i.e. Ulster (The tribal confederacy from which the red hand or Craeob Ruadh originates )
