    Happy birthday to the brilliant Michael Chang!
    At his prime, Chang was simply the fastest tennis player ever. Incredible foot speed, quickness and court coverage that even Nadal will be struggling.
    Below are the Facts but no fluke:
    The Youngest male Grand Slam Champion at 17 triumphed 1989 Roland Garros.
    Chang won a total of 34 top-level professional singles titles, including 1 grand slam, 7 masters.
    91/92 back-to-back year-end grand slam cup finalist.
    95 year-end masters cup finalist. beating Muster, Courier and No1 Sampras along the way, only lost to Home Favorite Boris Becker.
    Winning Indian Wells, Lipton sunshine double in 1992.
    The only 3-times Indian Wells Champion(92, 96, 97) before Federer achieved the same feat.
    Chang and Sampras are the only 2 players who qualified for year-end masters cup for 6 consecutive year in 90's(92-97).
    Chang and Agassi are the only 2 players who won titles in 3 decades(80, 90, and 00)
    Chang is also the Unofficial Cincinnati Kid: 4 consecutive final between 93 and 96. Winning 93 & 94 by beating stefan edberg, finalist of 95 & 96(losing to andre agassi).
    Chang won his first top-level singles title in 1988 at San Francisco, aged only 16.
    Overall Chang is immensely talented and somehow underrated due to his physical disadvantage of height.

      We must not forget that he also reached 3 other grand slam finals during the 90s: RG 1995 beaten by Muster, AO 96 beaten by Becker and US 96 beaten by Sampras.
      We can also add 7 victories in Master 1000.

    Ita amazing when most "experts" try to analyze the state of USA tennis and start to mention great American players recently, they will mention MacEnroe, Connors, Courier, Agassi, Sampras, Isner but they will always leave out Chang, even though he was one of the most consistent players in the Top 10 for most of his career and is youngest French Open winner at 18.

    • @strongbrain3128

      Well, Michael Chang is Asian American (The yellow kind). He did not count as US athletes because he is not white when he played against another white US player (The TV commentators always cheered the white against the Asian player). Same situation with Michelle Kwan, the audience always cheered for the other white American skaters more than for Kwan. IMHO, Asian Americans live like invisible shadow humans and are being ignored in the US media. Just a fact.

    The way Michael Chang played even back then when the rally speed was much slower than nowadays, it was nearly impossible his playing style could achieved what he did ..every point he won may be 3-4times the energy other required . He won points by not losing points , running all 4 corners .. making passing shots or lobs. In such way if a player can reach several quarter finals already an outstanding achievement ..
    he managed to win French Open at 17: reaching another 3 grand slam finals .. being the top 10 player for some 8 years (1989-1997). Huge Respect!

    Chang was my absolute idol in `89, and that of my friends. We were just a bunch of kids crazy about tennis, and Chang at Roland Garros seemed to come out of nowhere - a teenager, one of us. And were we rooting for him in the finals - even though I loved Edberg, too. Fun fact: John McEnroe commented after Changs triumph at Roland Garros: "If [Chang] makes it to the semifinals at Wimbledon as well, I´ll drop my pants on centre court." Much to our disappointment (and McEnroe´s luck, or vice versa) Chang did not get that far.

    • @simonsiddique
      @simonsiddique 3 роки тому +9

      For me, it looked like he had some physical advantage and athleticism edge over his opponents. Like, his shorter and lighter physique made him more balanced and movements quick and sharp. Also, he had faster running speed than most his opponents.

    • @SkyreeXScalabar
      @SkyreeXScalabar 3 роки тому +4

      @@simonsiddique Not really an advantage cause the trade off was serving power, reach and ground stroke power. Taller players are always more advantaged because they can just improve their footwork. Short players can't just learn to hit harder.

    • @simonsiddique
      @simonsiddique 3 роки тому +1

      @@SkyreeXScalabar For taller players to get more balance and quickness in movement, they has to have light weight, less mascular body. Like you see in Zverev and Medvedev. Both are known to move better for their size, where Del potro had same size but moved slower as he weighted more for his muscles.
      Shorter guys generally works more on their muscles to have extra power in shots. Like you see in Ferrer, Nishikori(Legs), Wawrinka etc.
      I think, if Chang worked out more and had muscles, he would have more power but lose some of that speed. But, overall that change would have been better for him.

    • @SkyreeXScalabar
      @SkyreeXScalabar 3 роки тому +4

       @Simon Siddique Stan is 6' so not short. Ferrer and Nishikori aren't known for any powerful shotmaking. Chang had legs like tree trunks and they were noticeably big for someone his size. Delpo is 6'6" which is very tall even for tennis standards but he still manages to move well and of course he was able to leverage that height into a massive forehand. Zverev and Med might be considered skinny but it's because of their height, they still have large muscles groups that are just hidden or stretched.
      So no, short players don't really have an advantage considering the trade off they get.

    • @simonsiddique
      @simonsiddique 3 роки тому

      @@SkyreeXScalabar Height difference between Stan(6'0) - Zverev(6'6), Medvedev(6'6) or Delpo(6'6) is twice the Chang(5'9) - Stan (6'0) difference. But Stan's average groundstroke speed is much higher then them.
      See -
      on-the-t.com/2016/11/26/aoleaderboard-forehand-speed/#:~:text=Below%2C%20are%20charts%20showing%20speed,the%20forehand%20(Figure%201).
      Sorry, I couldn't find a more recent chart.
      Here, you can see that Stan is among the top without height and hidden large muscle groups.
      Also, you would see Nishikori and Ferrer in the middle, higher than many taller guys.
      This happened because they have higher upper body mass for their respective heights.
      Which Chang didn't have. Strong legs make one's movement faster gain higher momentum to execute shots but doesn't make ones shots from stationary position faster. For that one needs strong upper body.

    Happy birthday to the brilliant Michael Chang!
    And many thanks to Tennis TV to post great video of shots collection from brilliant Chang.
    Yes, Chang was immensely talented - and one of the very best athletes tennis has seen.
    Some of his improvised shots were incredible and he actually could do a lot of really neat trick shots which he never did in serious matches - which one would expect given his mindset.
    When Chang was young he was taken to the Olympic center in Colorado for testing - he tested at elite levels in every test they had - footspeed, reflex, balance hand eye.... they said he had every hallmark they look for in world class athletes - except height.
    So yes.... the only reason chang thrived was that despite his height, he was extremely talented.

    Chang was one of the best top-tier players without the ability to contend for the #1 spot.

    came within one point of dethroning prime Sampras at number 1. youngest Major winner until Becker. with no power or size. just heart and speed.

      Becker came first. He won his first two wimbledons in 85 and 86. Chang won his French open in 89

    Michael “chimpy” Chang was my nickname for him when I played tennis as a youth. Our discussions of taking about ATP pros would arise, I’d refer him as “Chimpy Chang”. Because he’s like a chimpanzee running around the court, full of robust energy

    Michael “Chimpy” Chang was my Nick name for him when I played tennis as a pre teen. Because of his monkey like speed and agility.

    Incredible player. Never gave up on a point. Sometimes I felt he was born in the wrong era... he would perhaps do better if he was born ten years later when courts were much slower

    Looking back now, Chang had insane hustle skills. But you couldn’t help but wonder how many championships he could have won if he had a more dominant plan before taking many of those early shots on the ball. Seems like he allowed the opponent to dictate many of those rallies and relied on his defensive skills too much.

    McEnroe and Mary Carillo always used to repeatedly remind the audiences Chang was only 5’7” and a little guy. They loved to belittle Asians but would dare to do that to blacks. Asians are always fair game because we are lame and quiet. Not me you MFs.
