First Mating With Tru-Test cow Collars, How Did They do?? I feel Like It Might Be Worse...

- I've been looking forward to this moment for a while, we finally get to find out the results of all the hard work we put in at mating time.
It's also the first mating we have done solely relying on the info from the collars, I feel like it may not be the best results but sometimes you never know....Time will tell!
Awesome herd check, makes for a good day, looks like your Dad is convinced on the collars which is great, Looks like chicory is performing very well, looks good, great video.
Think he’s coming around to them 😉
Thanks 🙏
I rather like watching these videos, currently I am 15 and when I grow, up, I want to be a dairy farmer! And I am in the Waikato region of New Zealand.
Awesome mate, great industry to be in, lots of opportunities and a great lifestyle 👍
Good results
Always great to hear and see your dads perspective on things.
Thanks! Trying to get him on more 😂
Good to see the Old Fella embracing new technology. Collars must be working a treat Andrew
Nice work. Your old man was very humble and reserved on the outside with his AI results but I imagine he was cheering on the inside.
Haha maybe, he doesn’t give to much away
Your numbers are great for AI. I am happy if I can get 50% in my beef cows. I really like hearing you and your Dad talking of how you manage the herds. When we milked we had a high cost, high production herd. We had to utilize our high cost land that way. Your system is a low cost production system, utilizing your land with rotational grazing. There are few herds left in our area. The cost of production is just too high for the current dairy prices. $20 US/hundred weight . That is up from the mid teens last summer.
Happy to see, we've just pulled the trigger on tru-test collars in vic, australia. Was a bit nervous to see your results 😅
That’s awesome! They do work great 😉👍
Tom Pemberton needs to see the results of collars and the pregnancy results. He watched your video to see how to fit his collars.
Great to see the collars are helping you and your Dad.
Great video, thanks.😊
Collars play a part but I think its also the cows as well, being OAD we generally get better results but jerseys are typically more fertile too
Great results and seeing you both sat on the porch discussing the results with the sun shining and the birds singing has me looking forward even more to some better weather on this cold sleety day in the northwest of England 🥶👍
Glad you enjoyed it
There will be a certain amount that still show heat activity even when pregnant. Possibly your collars are showing these. It will be interesting to track those cows next year and see if they're the same ones that show heat signs while bred.
I personally had a cow that would show a "heat" at 5 months bred. Every year she scared me until I got used to her.
I was talking to Kerri about that and she said around 5% of pregnant cows still show signs of heat, which is pretty interesting
I'm so chuffed for you Andrew that you've ended up with a much better mating than you anticipated and that 67% conception rate is brilliant well done dad
The collars are amazingly accurate by the look of it wish we had them in my day
Thanks Keith. Tech is definitely helping but it certainly does come at a cost, but can also have great results and save a lot of time and effort 👍
Impressive results, your numbers in the fertility focus report are very good
Thanks 🙏
Just flew into your spectacular country!! So nice to actually see it first hand.
That’s awesome, hope you enjoy it out here 👍
Well done lads, I always have sympathy for you guys who have only one calving season per year, it makes it imperative to get your girls back in calf , we are in liquid milk and calve in September and October and again in February and march so if a few cows don’t get back in calf we can bring them around to the next mob if we feel they are worth it, we have a replacement rate of 15 percent and about half of that is empty cows . We are considering going with the collars as we only use sexed semen for replacements and it is kinda expensive so if we can get to a 60 percent conception rate we could potentially save a good few quid at the moment we are using 17 straws to get 10 pregnancies and we are getting 12 from 17 with the beef semen so we are not optimising our performance and if we can save 10 to 15 percent on our semen costs it would be a good amount ( we used 580 straws last year to get 380 calves) so aside from the heat detection what other benefits do you see from the collars? We would probably be installing an automatic drafting system as well and possibly a feed to yield for our in parlour feeding which would utilise the collars a bit more than you guys do but it all costs money and realistically we don’t see huge cost savings from any of it so is there any other benefits that you would attribute to the collars?
Hey any chance you can send me this on Instagram so I can voice message reply?
Great result Lad's, super stuff.
I Hope you are both happy with the result.
Delighted to see the collars are working so well for you 👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks Connor, definitely pretty happy with it, best results to date 👌
I also liked hearing your dads perspective and thoughts. The reason i say that is sometimes its hard getting someone to accept newer technology . I am one of them😁😁
Haha yeah I think he’s coming around.. 🤷
Everything is looking good ✔️ almost 27k subscribers!
Haha a wee way off 😂
Awesome well done.
I'm a little envious of your green pastures 😕, farm looking great
It's drying up now
Good news though, my mating results were good too.
Thanks 🙏
The top’s definitely drying up here, days are still so hot.
What was it?
@TheOnceADayFarmer
Twice a day milking.
93.5% pregnant
6.5% recheck.
58% 5 week incalf (AB)
75% 8 week incalf.
All better than last season.
Can’t beat 67% conception rate.
I run an ai centre here in Victoria, Australia. Based purely on non return rate 60% was a good number. Usually once actual PD results varied from 5% to 10% less than the non return number. Well done dad👌👍
I think it will definitely be hard to beat in the future, was pretty surprised by it, it’s probably something that’s not looked at very often but plays a big part.
Hi Andrew well done on the results with the pregnancy testing. Sounds like your number 1 ab tech needs a pay rise 😊 and great chat with your dad at the end
I totally agree about the pay rise
Thanks! Haha maybe 😉
Awesome result well done Andrew
Thanks man, did you get yours back? Can’t remember if you said or you were waiting for them
@@TheOnceADayFarmer na still waiting
@@FamilyFarmingandFun that takes a while aye, I got my herd test results back the same day last week 😅 I guess for the pregnancy one it must take longer 🤷
@@TheOnceADayFarmer yeah got our herd test results back a day later. But just waiting for the pregnancy test results. Feels like it’s taking longer 😂
👀🙄🐾👍That was a good result Andy and dad Vetora is what used to be Vetent?
Thanks! Nah they are two different vet clinics, we have both in town 👍
fantastic effort andrew and dad, great results, what did vet say was average for area? looking well set up
Thanks! Im not to sure what it is this year sorry
Wow they are sensational results, not many people get 67% conception rate in there R2s, so well done,
That was across the whole herd, I don’t scan the R2’s down at Merv’s unfortunately 👍
Good results from big heard congratulations to you both for that great job
Thank you!
Hey lads.not a bad result then.all good.take care.
Thanks 🙏
Have collars helped your cellcount at all
Good work 👏 🙌
Hi I like your vedeo
What happen to the gate
Buenas soy de cuba que tipo de hierva es la que tiene en el potrero de las hojas hanchas y que tiempo de duración tienen
That is impressive. I scan sheep and AI in them is rarely better than 55%. If you send culls that are pregnant to the works is there a penalty?
Thanks! No penalty 👍
What's the 67% based on ?? Total number of cows compared to conception on first round?Or what held in the first 3 weeks to what was mated? Convinced if you started using alot more selenium and B12 you would do better.
It’s based on all ai matings, takes into account returns.
Maybe, I’ll ask Martha next time I see her around that, be interesting to see what she says.
To be fair though, 67 is pretty high
Now with a tighter calving will mean higher feed demand earlier... recheck winter feed plan
Yep that’s the downside 😅
Were you serving cows in the morning and afternoon or just in the morning?
Just in the morning 👍
Will be interesting to see that data how many extra straws used when the collar was saying she was on heat but she wasnt
Yep that’s a good point, to be fair I don’t think it would be a lot but still interesting 👍
Yes. Me to.
Whats your somatic cell count over there In Canada 🇨🇦 75000 is about right for overall heard. And how are the feet i trim dairy cows here.
It’s about 120 ave for the season so far, will go up a little as we head for the end of the season.
The only time I trim a hoof is if she’s a bit lame and I barely have any of problems with that. Might’ve looked at 5 cows so far this season, (since last July)
NICE outside is where cows should be best for feet but confinement does bring the milk alot of heards of ours are pushing 40 to 44 with a 4.8 butter fat
@@D.o.a you wouldn’t find many farms here that milk 3x a day where as if I understand it you have quite a few over there?
Your winter extremes are pretty hardcore too
@TheOnceADayFarmer yes alot are 3 times and even the robot farms we have are refusing cows for to many visits ya the average milk cow age is 4 lactations. Also alot of our herds are cows milking 90 kgs a day. I love as a trimmer seeing cows outside. 🐄
@TheOnceADayFarmer Ya cold in Winter set records -54 with windchill.
Hi
How do you know the difference between AI and Bull pregnancy from scanning!!!🤓
Oh!! I think I’ll answer my own question if the AI was done first they will be further along than the bull pregnancies!!🤦♀️
😂👍
must cost a fortune to get a extra techs in,had 2 in other day both scanning while i recorded and pushed the girls up
They’re training remember 👍
how can the vets tell wether it was th ai or the bull
By the size of the feotus. AI came first ... then the bulls
They have the dates and then by the size of the calf
