- Today I'm scrabbling to get a few jobs ticked off before the chopper comes at the end of the week.
It's also just rained which has greened things up nicely but I'm sending some culls off to the works to stop the potential spread of mastitis and also a couple of cows that aren't milking very well either
Me and my husband farm in America north Georgia to be exact. I highly wouldn’t recommend planting fescue unless you’re planting a variety that is modified endophyte. Normal fescue our cows will not eat unless it’s in the dead of winter and there is absolutely nothing else to eat. The fescue makes the cows hot and doesn’t taste very well from what we have been told by our department of natural resources agents. We have in recent years been planting modified endophyte fescue called max Q fescue there is 2 types here in America Jessup and texoma. We have planted both. Jessup does well in wetter areas that have more standing water and are prone to flooding. Texoma does better in drier conditions it doesn’t like to be in standing water. I’m sure in your area of the world there might be different types of fescue. But I highly wouldn’t recommend the regular old Kentucky 31 it’s a waste of time and money unless you’re looking for law grass.
Great point, from what I’ve been told one of the fescues in the mix is just to make it palatable for the cows as they won’t eat the other one by itself. Will be interesting to see how it goes, if worst comes worst I can always just shut it up and bale it 🤷
What do your cull cows come to cows in England like fit beef type cows come to around 1800 pounds
Great to see you and your Dogs out in the fields. 😊❤
Hopefully the Cattle will be out soon. 😊
👀🙄🐾👍You made the right decision get rid of the high cell count cows
What is meant by "releasing" the plants ? and "a 2nd release" This is (as far as i'm aware) a NZ specific term. I've heard or read the term in relation to plantation forestry but never been able to work out the meaning from context. Other kiwis feel free to chime in, I don't need Andrew specifically to answer.
Simply removing the quick growing grass that's trying to choke the little seedling tree , manually or with grass specific herbicide in your knapsack. Once the plant is a metre high its algood.
Blanking is going through the area and planting a new tree where a tree hasn't survived so you maintain the desired population
Perfect explanation above 👍
@@johnreynolds8772 Thanks John. In Aust I've used a roundup/simazine mix pre-planting. roundup kills standing grasses and simazine stops seed germination for around 12 months - 2 years.

When you returned to the farm did you take on extra land for your extra 100 hefers and cows ???
Or did you just work the land more efficiently ??
Great video as usual 👌
Yes when I moved back my cousin next door was selling up so we brought 30ha to carry 100 more cows 👍
Why not CMT your high cell count cows and look to 3/4 them and carry on milking if you have the feed? More milk in the tank and better condition cows to kill in 4-6 weeks time
Good points, however I’m trying to get rid of my last row, and 4/6 of them needed to go, half of them were pretty annoying to milk
Hi I like your video
when you said you got some cows from huntly way did you get them of philip rogers
I can’t remember now sorry
Mohaka mate 👌👌👌could mix it with manta?
See if you can get yourself some Haven with MaxP tall fescue, and get on wrightsons new chicory mate
We just bought all our seed and about to start sowing this month, we are using an Italian rye grass called frenzy and last 2-3 years depending on how well it’s gets irrigated. Not sure if it’s available in NZ but highly recommend using longer duration grass and sowing 1/3 of your paddocks every year for 3 years to cut cost, labour and time. But I do enjoy your videos and just comparing life and farming in NZ to us here in Australia
Good video, are you getting away from chickory all together
Interesting point, I’ll actually make a video about that very soon 👍
The cows that you sent off , go to a butcher ? If so , do you sell the meat?
It didnt go to a butcher, it went to a meat abattoir, they pay me for the animal and they sell the meat. I'd think most of it would go into mince and hamburger patties
What kind of irrigation set up do you have Andrew
mother nature
@@carlwereld5131 sorry I meant effluent
good question he has never show us that
Yeah a good subject for a video perhaps, just have a traveling irrigator 👍
Nice to get rain.
What do you do with your bull calves
