    We've had the scr collars since Aug and it's been awesome the amount of info u get back from them. The rumination is my favorite cause u can find sick cows sooner. We also got the meters in the parlor as well and it's neat to get every milking weights. Don't get info overload it's real easy to do!!

    Could you do a video on the cost per cow and per year for the cost of these collars and what made you choose this brand over cow manager, halter etc. Asking as hubby and I are going 50/50 next season and this would possibly be something we look into in the future. We farm on the hauraki plains.
    Also maybe a breakdown of the cost of DNA testing please.

  • @FamilyFarmingandFun

    Cool technology. But the only downside to technology I see is it’s taking farming away from farming. Farmer will forget how to read cows

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  2 роки тому

      I can see where your coming from but I would have to disagree, I think all this tech is a luxury not a necessity, how ever each individual farm is different and with these collars I think its making mating far more accurate, especially around silent heats or cows that are on but haven't rubbed the indicator enough be picked up by the farmer. I know you have good repo results and so do I, but one of the main advantages of this tech is that I'm hoping to improve them even more, and if I can I'm hoping to carry less replacements which is a big money saver.
      The techs not the magic bullet to solve peoples problems but I definitely think its making good farmers become even better.

    I see you've gone back to using tail paint as well as the estrotect stickers? Which do you prefer? Do you use different heat detection aids for different numbers of returns?

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  2 роки тому +1

      Yep went to tail paint from week 3 as when they return the bulls will be out so didn’t need scratchies so a bit cheaper.
      I prefer the estrotects as they’re way easier to tell if she’s on 👌

    Hi Andrew ,you mentioned that you’ll AI with sexed at the optimal time will this be possible on OAD .I’ve used collars for a few years and AI 2X a day I’ve also picked up health problems before the cow shows anything ,a great bit of kit !

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  2 роки тому +1

      Very good question! Most farmers in NZ only AI OAD as the tech only comes in the morning so we’re no different from them.
      But if the cows not in the optimal time I’ll just leave her or just use conventional, that’s the plan anyway 😅
      That’s awesome to hear! They definitely work then 👌

    Hey Andrew, really enjoy the content, always look forward to the next episode and constantly learning from your channel.
    Just wanted to ask, you mentioned 74 hadn’t taken to the sexed semen, how do you know if it has held? Google results will only tell me they can still be on heat after being mated and blood results/scanning are the options for finding out, was just curious if you’re observing something else?
    Cheers, Sean.

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Sean, really appreciate it mate!
      So if she comes on heat again after being served then the insemination didn’t hold, generally only about 60% of them do, and a normal return is 18-24 days after.
      But if she doesn’t come in heat again after insemination then she’s held and pregnant, hope that makes sense 👍

    Another great video Andrew that technology is awesome as a herdsman your instincts will tell you whats going on with your herd but having that technology to hone your instincts down even more is a great tool to have especially with the ultimate time to serve them that is massive and will make a huge difference to conception rates especially for the expensive sexed semen
