Guns are actually the best weapons in SMT 1, because you can load them with sleep/bind//charm rounds. This lets you stunlock (especially if you've been upping your character's luck, which is super easy to do in Tokyo Destiny Island) demons, including bosses, and since the damage is just based on the gun alone, even your physically weakest partner can do respectable damage. It's a cheesy strategy for sure, but SMT 1 is all cheese in terms of combat.
I'm reminded of some monsters in Devil May Cry, which had a note about them evolving over centuries to become more immune to all possible threats they could face in the mortal world, based on experiences in the past, hence why swords and fists don't do much damage to them. Guns on the other hand.....
You talk about how it's something we shouldn't question that the MP5 can be loaded with shotgun shells... But what gets me is that the shotgun shells can be used by either gender, which reminds me that this game has gender locked ammo
See, similarly to SJ, magic also affects the damage you take from magic attacks. It also affects item damage. Pretty sure you can get the item version of Megido absurdly early and nuke every encounter up until Zenki and Goki

Fun fact about Thor in the SNES version. He may be the god of thunder but he’s not immune to Zio and therefore not immune to shock… but he also knows Zio. Basically the difficulty in Snes SMT 1 is determined by 2 things. Does the boss know Zio and does the boss resist Zio?

I still freaking love why you get thrown into that jail/hospital deal at the start. You witnessed a demon murdering someone and took a weapon from the scene, what did you think would happen?
I've played through SMT1 3 times many years ago (and got all 3 endings). My go-to tactic for my human characters in all 3 runs was using multi-hit guns with nerve bullets. Iirc, those would constantly put enemies to sleep, then if they woke up they'd get put to sleep again before getting a chance to act due to my characters having higher speed. I don't remember any boss that was immune to nerve damage, and I basically stun-locked them all 'til they died - including the final bosses in all of the 3 routes. Iirc, there were also "cursed bullets" that could inflict bind on enemies, but they had a lot lower chance of inflicting the effect than nerve bullets, hence why I stuck with those. While Belial is *supposed* to be unkillable, you *can* actually hurt it by reflecting its own attacks using demons with passive physical and magic/fire reflection (like Tamamo, Mezuki and Gozuki). Do note that damage-reflection spells like Tetrakarn and Makarakarn *don't* work - only demons with passive affinity reflection do. Also, you can't actually kill it, as the fight automatically ends after 3 turns and you can't reflect enough damage to kill it that fast (at least, to my knowledge).
I would love so much if they remake shin megami tensei, it was the first megaten game I played back then when I discovered there was people translating jrpgs on the snes... I love it so much.
