I’m sure it was the best day of his long career. Some people might not think of this as much, but back in 2009 upon exiting old Shea Stadium me, my father, my Dad's brother and his son we're walking along when we looked to our right! It was Harry Kalas pulling his suitcase when he stopped, waived and said to us "hello folks"! The fact he did even that much showed his character and the person we'd heard he was! I'll never ever forget that and then of course he disappointingly passed away seven months later! Continued RIP Harry Kalas! The recent passing of Vin finished the end of an era! You'll never see or hear any others from now on cut from the same cloth as those four!
And Jay, highlights of that Phils era never gets old! Schmidty was my childhood baseball idol! I'll be 51 in January and vividly remember watching that '80 postseason

The Phillies could have continued being a top team through the 80’s had green not stolen our youth. Just look at the 1984 nl east division champ cubs. Yeah we got lucky and won the pennant in 1983 but that was a one off with a bunch of aged players. If not for green we would have been contenders for years after 1980.

Almost 40 years later I still get chills watching videos of this team and my heart still pounds when it gets to the NLCS. Finally seeing the Phils get over the LCS hump was the greatest thrill of my then 15 year old life.
Wow!-What a film! What a team! What a time in baseball history! I was 21 yrs old in 1980. I was a Met fan from north Jersey. The Mets stunk bad from 76-83. I'm 60 now and consider myself a baseball fan who loves history. Baseball historian?( maybe) I would like to thank publicly whoever made this film and now for allowing it up on UA-cam. I had written off Tug McGraw's later part of his career. This film was a refreshing slap in the head of long forgotten memories of baseball in my college days. So great to see the integral part Tug McGraw's vibrant youthful energy and infectious team comradrie, and the powerful affect it played in this great historical season in Philly!! That was a perfect night that I will never forget........

Those people did exactly the same thing as you....running up the ramp into the upper deck. They had too much of a head start on security to ever be caught!

it's a shame Larry Bowa didnt do a flip running out to his position at shortstop at the start of game 1 of the World Series. had he, he would be in the Hall of Fame today because he was at least as good as the showman in st louis
When I was a little girl, I watched Greg and Mike play on the AAA Farm team. I had them sign my baseball glove and a baseball. Of course I was too little then to realize I should save those items and not keep playing with them.
A few years ago I was drawn into learning about this greatest LCS ever and someone had game 5 of the NLCS on youtube w the Philly local announcers. I skipped to the final out and heard McCarver cackling hysterically. I learned that he had played a few games on the team that year and for several years before. That told me he was reacting to this as a player not an announcer, just overjoyed they had pulled out this exhausting, gut wrenching, impossible to win series and his guys were finally, FINALLY going to the World Series, and he could not find any words or any way to compose himself on air. Finding that had quite an impact on me. Then I watch this video and they play the clip of the last out and McCarver's cackle and I found myself moved to tears. I'm a Yankee fan. Is this a normal reaction to that?
No..thats appropriate..mcver always took crap over the years for his announcing. The truth is he is passionate and loves baseball. I see him as sort of a "last mohican" where he from the throwback eras..he is full of knowledge and has seen/ played alot of baseball.the stories he can tell are fading away along with the precious memories of a golden age of bsseball
I honestly feel sorry for people who only associate Pete Rose with scandal. That guy was inspiring. Respected by his colleagues and admired by fans and players alike. Rose was synonymous with maximum effort and winning. His mind is a baseball encyclopedia and his body was apparently made of steel. He never had a significant injury in his whole career and he played all out , crashing, sliding and running hard

I always liked the Phillies of the 70'S. Even though I loved the NY/LA world series games, I always felt bad for Philly and KC when they were eliminated. The Reds beat them in 76 and I had started to pay attention as a 4th grader lol. The NL east was a beast. I respected that era of philly, kc, NY and LA, my favorite era to this day.

"1980" was a magical year in many ways on a personal level as well. It was my Sr. year at Pitt...(June of 81' Grad). and my football team became the 1st EVER in the DVAL & North Coast Sec. to WIN it all on 11/28/80 in The Oakland Coliseum! ( same season the Oakland Raiders would win the Super Bowl in Jan. of 81') De La Salle of Concord started their run 2 years AFTER my team! WE were the "Pioneer's" of NCS Champions in the bay area! ( I was the starting WB & Kick -Return Specialist)...*....This NLCS vs the Astros is still one of the BEST ever! Pete Rose beat his old Cincy' MVP and 2x World Champ teammate, the great Joe Morgan it that classic 5 game series! It was the season George Brett hit .390! KC was tough, but like my high school football team, " The Phil's" of 80' had the magic! That play with Rose and Boone proved it! Great times to be a youth! Sports was different in so many ways 37 years ago! The vibe'....the NFL/NBA the music too! It was like a dream now to this 54 year old! Great memories!

On the baseball diamond, Pete Rose was the ultimate winner. Inspired his teammates to believe in themselves and knew how to get under his opponents' skin. No wonder the Big Red Machine won so much and the Phils made it over the hump with him.
1980 NLCS game 5 Phillies comeback::2015 ALDS game 4 Kansas City Royals comeback. Both came against Houston. Both came with each team facing elimination. Both came on the road. The Royals comeback in game 4 this year came 35 years to the day of the Phillies comeback in game 5 of the NLCS in 1980. Even freakier: In game 5 in 1980, the Astros scored three runs in the 7th for a sizeable lead but the Phillies scored five in the 8th in response. In 2015, the Astros scored 3 in the 7th for a four run lead in game 4, but the Royals responded with five in the 8th to take the lead. Maybe most importantly, Both teams ended up being world champions.

Pure class the Phils activated tim mccarver so he could hav played in 4 separate decades. The 50s 60s 70s and 80s. Also they gave him the color man bug for baseball. So he started broadcasting id say probably close to 95% because of the phillies. I think it took a baseball lover to know all the little insights he had afterplaying with the greatwst playera and 2 of mlbs best starters wver. Stwve Carlton and Bob Gibson. Let alone guys like Tug and Rick Wise. He was insightful. A lot of ppl took deions side over theb dumbest thing I ever heard someone get mad about, then deion of course stoops to an even lower level going at a man his late 50s or even 60s while HE was like 24. If deion concentrated he would have been a better baseball player, something like that was said. Of course he would have. Part of my youth. I got one HR in little league, and I can still swing a bat fairly well. I was at Veterans Stadium many times. Good memories. I saw the 1980 Phillies (I was in my early teens back then).
I was only eight at the time, but 1980 was a great year for philly sports. Phils won the WS Sixers made it to game seven of the eastern conference finals flyers made it to the SCF and also had their 35 game unbeaten streak Eagles made it to the SB. one win out of three is not too bad.
That would be one out of four, not three. Also, all four teams played in their respective league championship finals. The Sixers won the eastern conf finals in 1980 and lost to the Lakers in 6 games. The last game of that series is often talked about, as Magic Johnson started at Center in place of injured Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
After serving the team and viewers for the entire season, as well as the NLCS, the narrative goes that Harry & Co. were not permitted to call the World Series games due to network broadcast rules. In all the irony that IS the game of baseball, funny (in the aforementioned ‘ironic’ sense) how those very network broadcast rules seem to be the unfortunate vehicle that would bring us Tim McCarver in the World Series. It’s those rules, ladies & gentlemen, that brought us that douchiest of wind bags, Tim McCarver, to the World Series airwaves.
We had 2 tickets, sec 221 3 rows behind the Phillies dugout. I was in those seats for the WS game 2 against the Royals. For game 6, we had seats in the 300 level, up underneath the 500-700 level tier. I remember the Philadelphia Police K-9 squad- about 40 of them Marching out at the backstop entrance, half going down right and left field foul territory, with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th....
This still gives me goosebumps and tears. The most exciting year of baseball and I was 8 at the time. Best playoff series hands down. How many key hits did Del Unser have?

In my opinion if Bake Mcbride doesn't held up and scores in the 1980 national league championship series phillies win and lead the series 2 wins to nothing means the Houston Astros back is to the wall plus win all 3 games in the astrodome while the phillies could win just one game

I still can't believe Marty Bystrom was the starting pitcher for the final game of to NLCS. A rookie call up in September. That's unheard of.

I always liked the Phillies of the 70'S. Even though I loved the NY/LA world series games, I always felt bad for Philly and KC when they were eliminated. The Reds beat them in 76 and I had started to pay attention as a 4th grader
lol. The NL east was a beast. I respected that era of philly, kc, NY and LA, my favorite era to this day.

CLASSIC! I was 17 in 1980, this was a beautiful time to be young! This team was fantastic!I am born & raised in the east bay town of Pittsburg, Ca. "1980" was a magical year in many ways on a personal level as well. It was my Sr. year at Pitt...(June of 81' Grad). and my football team became the 1st EVER in the DVAL & North Coast Sec. to WIN it all on 11/28/80 in The Oakland Coliseum! ( same season the Oakland Raiders would win the Super Bowl in Jan. of 81') De La Salle of Concord started their run 2 years AFTER my team! WE were the "Pioneer's" of NCS Champions in the bay area! ( I was the starting WB & Kick -Return Specialist)...*....This NLCS vs the Astros is still one of the BEST ever! Pete Rose beat his old Cincy' MVP and 2x World Champ teammate, the great Joe Morgan it that classic 5 game series! It was the season George Brett hit .390! KC was tough, but like my high school football team, " The Phil's" of 80' had the magic! That play with Rose and Boone proved it! Great times to be a youth! Sports was different in so many ways 37 years ago! The vibe'....the NFL/NBA the music too! It was like a dream now to this 54 year old! Great memories!

I was 10 and a huge Pete Rose fan. Watching game 5 of the 1980 NLCS is one of the most indelible images of my childhood. One of the greatest games ever played, and I got to watch ever out. What a memory. What a game.

Both came with each team facing elimination.
Both came on the road.
The Royals comeback in game 4 this year came 35 years to the day of the Phillies comeback in game 5 of the NLCS in 1980.
Even freakier: In game 5 in 1980, the Astros scored three runs in the 7th for a sizeable lead but the Phillies scored five in the 8th in response. In 2015, the Astros scored 3 in the 7th for a four run lead in game 4, but the Royals responded with five in the 8th to take the lead.
Maybe most importantly, Both teams ended up being world champions.

So he started broadcasting id say probably close to 95% because of the phillies. Without Pete Rose making the greatest clutch play ever, the Phillies would have lost the 1980 Series. He wasn't the fastest runner, or the best power hitter, or the best defensive player ... but he was the best ever baseball player.
