I remember this team very well. You could tell they were improving n getting better. Very nice to see Dave Cash too - he wasnt around for the playoff runs later, but was very instrumental in not only on the field play, but in shifting the teams outlook to a more positive winning attitude. And re the 1980 WS win, yes, they were a very good team, got hot at the right time n took home the title, but i always remember what Larry Bowa said - the '80 team was real good, but the best team he ever played on was the 1977 Phils, and i ageee they were a powerhouse. But then came Black Friday and...we wont talk anymore about that.
That's the first thing I thought of when I heard the opening...that's the great Facenda narrating. He, in the words of NFL Films Steve Sabol, "could make a laundry list sound dramatic".
I was a Yankees fan and I know people criticize the Vet. But to me there was something special about seeing those Saturday afternoon late 70’s national TV games from Philly. Always felt like something was on the line...
It is -- credited at the end. Baseball teams used to be on their own to produce highlight films with the help of local producers, and NFL Films was based in nearby Cherry Hill, NJ.
There was I think an old program shown years ago on ESPN about the Phillies and their Sept. call ups. I believe it was bush something to bright lights?? Any help phillies fans?
I think prior to what is now called "MLB Network" the league wide arm for all MLB clubs (the MLB website, etc)each indidvual team had their own in house production time. In those days, NFL Films had their headquarters in the Southern New Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia. Thus all of the then "Big 4" sports teams, in Philly i.e Flyers, Sixers and Phillies all had NFL films produced their annual "season in reviews" as well. That also explains why John Facenda who was began his career as a well Known TV and Radio News Anchor from Philadelphia narrating this 1974 Phillies season.
Film says Dave Cash changed his number to 30 - so that Bowa, Schmidt and he would be 10-20-30.... but I could swear Cash wore 30 with the Pirates, too.
The start of the team's most successful run in its franchise history. In 13 out of 14 years from 1974 through 1987, the Phillies would win at least 80 games. The team would lay claim to 6 division titles, 2 NL pennants and a World Championship.
what a terrific little gem. Wonder if NFL did any other MLB work during the classic NFL films era... likely not. This may have been a Sabol Special for the old hometown.
Before MLB Productions was a thing teams were on their own to produce highlight packages, and I guess the NFL was still letting Sabol take on outside clients at this point.
@@notvalidcharacters Actually I think Gilbert and Mike are both right. Not to mention both Ed and Steve Sabol during the 70's and early 80's was also leading highlights for all of the big 4 Philadelphia area sports teams as well. FYI I can verify. My Aunt lived in Central New Jersey in the early/mid '80's and I would be able to watch the Phillies local broadcasts during summer vacation from my then home in the NYC area. I remember during rain delays, they would also show other highlight reels from the Eagles, Flyers and Sixers as well.
They were good team in 1970s decades however they were too lost much in National League Championship Series Games 3 times and never arrived at World series game until on 1980 finally first time. Also, for the Kansas city Royals who was just same as the Phillies way in 1970s with no arrive at world series yet until to 1980 same teams together played in during on 1980 world series games.
Good to see Dave Cash get the accolades he always deserved for the inspiration he brought to not just '74 but that whole era.
They have him wearing #16 which must have been just for spring training as he wore #30 his whole career.
Loved these guys, Willie, Bow, D. Cash, Hutt, JJ...some of my favorite Phils of all time!
This was the year I fell in love with the Phillies as a kid in the Summer of ‘74. Nothing’s changed in the last 45+ years.
Fiddy years now.
Same
I’ve always loved how huge the rear numbers are on those jerseys.

Love seeing my grandpas baseball team and him playing my grandpa Dave cash
Your grandfather was a fine ballplayer and he also did a great job as a manager in the Phillies minor league system!
Dave Cash was the missing winning element of the 77-78 team.
Dave Cash was, and is, awesome!
Nice footage of Rowland Office getting denied the steal at the end there, Braves number 22.
1974 was Mike Schmidt's breakout season with 36 HR's and 116 RBI's, after batting .196 the year before
Mike was “Super” great !
Willie Montanez!!!! I always got his baseball cards back then!
It’s awesome seeing all the comments from grateful fans.
Nice hearing John Facenda
Willie Montanez..My All Time Favorite Phillie.
nice seeing my all time fave Phillie, Tony Taylor
I got to see him live when I was a youngin. Batting without a helmet. LOL
John Facenda is just as great narrating baseball as football.
That's the first thing I thought of when I heard the opening...that's the great Facenda narrating. He, in the words of NFL Films Steve Sabol, "could make a laundry list sound dramatic".
As soon as I clicked on this video I thought that also.
I was a Yankees fan and I know people criticize the Vet. But to me there was something special about seeing those Saturday afternoon late 70’s national TV games from Philly. Always felt like something was on the line...
This is wonderful! I’d love to see what was left on the cutting room floor! Surely, they have highlights from other earlier 70s years
I was 10 years old and loved this team!
I was 9 and fell in love with Phillies Baseball in the Summer of 1974
great video. would love to see 1973 & 1975
John Facenda narrates a season review of this non playoff team? I'm used to him narrating the Steeler vs Raider wars of the 70's.
He was a Philadelphia News Anchor and narrated for NFL films also
Go to hell.
John Facenda was a Philly newscaster, a Philly icon.
Looks like an NFL Films production, from John Facenda to the use of NFL Films music...
It is -- credited at the end. Baseball teams used to be on their own to produce highlight films with the help of local producers, and NFL Films was based in nearby Cherry Hill, NJ.
I remember listening on radio opening day on a Saturday afternoon the Mike Schmidt walk off home run again Tug McGraw at the Vet.
the next year the Tugger would get traded to Philly.
I was 7 and went to my first game that year. It was bat day Randy Jones vs Jim lonborg. You won't see bat day again lol
Awesome! Thanks for posting!
had Phils acquired excellent closers, they could have gotten past LAD Cey Garvey and Baker. heartbreaking years
I saw a guy wearing a Willie Montanez jersey last night. I thought it odd.
That was the turn around season for the Phillies.
The 1974 Philadelphia Phillies battle cry “Yes we can” would also become the California Angels battle cry in 1979.
Schmidt’s first superstar season.
I was 13
And a dodgers fan
There was I think an old program shown years ago on ESPN about the Phillies and their Sept. call ups. I believe it was bush something to bright lights?? Any help phillies fans?
I remember watching that on ESPN Classic many years ago. Kevin Saucier and Erskine Thomason were prominently featured. I forget what it was called
Never seen John Facenda do baseball before.

this was fantastic!!!! produced like NFL films!!! are there more! DOES every team have one??
its been 3 years...i guess this is all that exists....screw MLB for saving NOTHING
Does anyone know what a Philadelphia Phillies Magazine/program worth 60cents back then would be worth in Good condition today? Ty
30cents.
The Great Old Days!
Tom Hutton for the Hall of Fame
And Terry Harmon!
And tony taylor
Film says Dave Cash changed his number to 30 - so that Bowa, Schmidt and he would be 10-20-30.... but I could swear Cash wore 30 with the Pirates, too.
Yes, but go back to the beginning of the video, Cash wore 16 in spring training. He changed to 30 on opening day.
He tells me all about his baseball story’s
Wow the stories he must have...

Luke Enno That should read "The start of the team's most successful run in franchise history," you dolt! 😠
I beg to differ. The second best run, next to 2007 - 2011. Five strait division titles, two league championships, and one World Series.
Facenda… the best
Interesting to see MLB through NFL filter.
How did the Phillies only win 80 games when they played the entire season at home?
Anybody know the song at 0:53
Narrated by John Facenda.
@ 10:26 a few too many "re" s lol
John facenda
Phils were lucky to play all their games at home that year

This has nothing to do with NFL, it's simply using John Facenda as narrator, who was a Philadelphia newscaster in those times.

Oh, so that's where Mr. Obama got his campaign slogan from!🤔😆
Cesar Chavez?
@@michealhenry3132 It's the Yes We Can that flashed on the stadium message board.
Yes, We Can was also the slogan for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign

English please 🤦♂️
@@cow5217 you lied.
On Opening Day,a streaker ran toward and by the mound just before Schmidt's game winning homer off of Tug.WOR-TV showed full frontal nudity.
Ah the 70's - the decade of the streaker! lol
Nowadays, you have Stadium ushers and policemen coming in to ruin the fun. 😏
