Almost the same. American Chop Suey usually has Italian seasoning and bell peppers. American Goulash lacks Bell peppers and uses paprika for seasoning. However they are almost identical otherwise.
Just bought the book and it's fantastic. We've had the Instant Pot for over two years and this is the first time I've used. I've already made two perfect dishes. ... Guy
works great. i love that it has stainless steal pot inside ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg and not the one with coating. we used to have a coated pot before, and the coating slowly peels, and i am sure went into the food that we cooked. Absolutely love stainless steel, and will not use a coated product again. This pot has many settings and many buttons, and i need to sit down with a manual to figure out which setting to use. I used the basic functions, and even though i am not technologically skilled, i turned it on and assembled it without any help.Very satisfied with this product overall.
I love this stuff and havent made it in about ten years. Im inspired to make it tonight but this time in the instant pot and adding boursin! I was married in 1956 and it was about all i knew how to make. We had to have it with a slice of soft white bread spread with lots of butter. My husband is 91 years old now and his taste buds are ready for old fashioned comfort food. So thanks THIS is it.
Growing up my mom made a similar goulash. She made it when we were broke broke. I think she said she could make it for $2.00 and it fed my brother and I. There was enough left over for breakfast. When we were just broke we would put it on buttered bread. It became comfort food to my brother. He continued to make it once a week. Probably out of habit! LOL
Yes!! Johnny Marzetti. I’m from Ohio and my Grandmother made it. I believe it originated from Marzetti’s Restaurant on High St , Columbus Ohio...my home town. 😊
Thank you for the term 'Goulash'! We had that often in my family growing up. It's a family favorite. I supposed if you weren't raised on it, it might look like a poor man's meal (we were poor, I just didn't know it). I love this dish! =)
EXCELLENT RECIPE - Thanks for sharing! My daughter got an Instant pot for a gift 2 years ago and still has not got in to using it, I think I need to buy your book and give it to her for her next birthday!
Definitely making this more often. This was my first meal made in my instant pot. I had it for 4 months now. Made hard boiled eggs but nothing else. I was a little intimidated at first. But after watching you I mustered up the courage and it came out amazing because of you!!! Thank you 😊❤️
My Mama made this (sans green pepper) plus Cheddar Cheese...no Boursin...she called it “Slumgullion”...yes, that’s actually a word!!! LOVE this stuff!! Thanks for a great memory, Jeffrey!!! ♥️🥰😋
Isn’t that funny!?!?!? Good funny!!! 💖💖 Called the same name...made so differently!!! I used to think it was a word she made up, but then I found out later that it’s actually an actual name of a macaroni dish!!! It was always one of my faves!!! Sure do miss my Mama and her cooking!!! 💙💝
You're so right about the simple things in life. I think we have all come to appreciate them even more during these trying times. This looks so delicious. My wife uses our instapot 3-4 times a week. She's really good at it, too. She was a chef when we met 35 years ago, so she can REALLY cook. Call me 'Mr. Lucky.'
Jeffrey, have you ever made Instant Pot yogurt? Then you can make your own Boursin knockoff! Make your yogurt then strain it through a ricotta strainer or a couple of layers of cheesecloth for a few days. Take it out and mix in your choice of herbs and spices. I use garlic, fresh basil and salt and pepper. Then throw it back it back in the fridge for a day. It is slap me silly good!!
He has a video on making yogurt in an instant pot and using a yogurt strainer. I can't imagine cow's milk yogurt quite being the same as goat cheese but it sounds like a good substitute especially after adding herbs. I may have to try that!
Just made this... so good! I even found the Borsin at my store on sale for $2 off! Bought a couple and will have no trouble using them before the end of mar, ha! Thanks for sharing these recipes. I am not a great cook, so simple, delicious meals I can make will keep me eating well and save me money from eating out all the damn time.
Oh man, you have no idea how long iv'e been waiting for you to do a goulash recipe. All the instant pot goulash recipes i've tried online usually result in a burn notice. I knew you'd give us a recipe that works!
Love American Chop Suey! Can’t wait to try your recipe 😁 Also it’s a perfect one serving for me .... yeah I said ... One ....Serving ...🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😁😁😁😁😁😁
you cracked me up with the little edie line! i was out of power for last week and out of boredom i started talking like her. needless to say, i got stuck on little edie for a couple of days! lol. i wasn't sure if my husband was gonna leave me or not-lol! love you bunches!~ LuAnn
Cooked this up for the family this evening. When I had this as a kid, it tended to be a fairly bland tomato sauce and pasta dish. Your recipe has way more flavor. Another winner Jeff!! I went with a couple optional tablespoons of Crystal hot sauce, but didn't add in the optional Boursin cheese. I might try that next time. We have both your cookbooks and love them. Looking forward to the next one.
This recipe is crazy good! I made it this past weekend and everyone loved it. Awesome as usual! My mom and grandma called it American chop suey. I believe the flavor is way better in the instant pot.
I don't use the peppers or crushed tomatoes. i use whole or diced ones bc i like to taste the tomatoes. don't use tomato sauce but i do use beef broth in my IP. its so easily done in there.
Absolutely loved the recipe but just had 1 comment. I received an error message on my IP when I went to cook the meal but I later realized it was due to the sauteing process. I should have made sure to scrape the bottom of the inner pot to make sure nothing was stuck after sauteing the onions and green pepper with the olive oil. This is common to happen (from what I looked up lol). Just wanted to give this little FYI to anyone else if it's there first time sauteing like how it was for me. Other than that the meal was delicious!!
I never saute in the pot. I saute separately in another pan (stove top). Too many times I got the message that food was burning, but it was just where it stuck a little to the bottom.
Growing up we always called this beef-a-roni. I guess this has many many many names....well, whatever you want to call it, it's just good ol comfort food. Yummy!!!
I have been making this for years but not in the instant pot and we call it macaroni beef and tomatoes. Made it in my instant pot yesterday and came out so good
That's so funny because I was going to make that tonight. I always called it Macaroni & meatsauce or Pasta Bolognese. But I like the name American Chop Suey, very patriotic! I will use this recipe so I can make it in my Instant Pot---looks so much easier than the traditional way!!!🤗Thank you, Jeffrey!💖
I have learned more from you in ten minutes on how to use my Instant Pot, then I did in months. The Pot intimidated me until I found your channel. I add a pinch of chili sauce and we, like Richard, call it Chili Mac. Yum.
Made this tonight. I added red bell pepper and it was one of the tastiest things I've made in the instant pot. And of course I used the boursin. Freaking fantastic thank you so much!
I've been making a variation of my mom's John Marzetti for years only we baked it using egg noodles and lots and lots of cheese. That name is all we've ever called it. We're from Michigan. Now I want to make some!
Guess my family was the weird one. My Dad, born in 1930 in upstate NY called it slumgull. Short for slumgullion. No idea where that one came from. But we all loved it. 💜
just tried this recipe. Using my 6 qt Duo, followed the instructions TO THE LETTER. After 12-14 minutes coming up to pressure, got the dreaded BURN notice. Opened it up, deglazed the bottom, and tried again. After about 10 minutes I got the BURN notice again. At this point I said screw it, and dished it up. Thankfully after two periods of attempting to come up to pressure, it was cooked enough, and delicious! Several things: nothing wrong with the pot. Made another dish in it right before trying this recipe, and it worked fine. When I opened it up the first time, I found it to be very thick. Obvious that either the recipe should call for more broth, and/or 1/3 to 1/2 cut back on the noodles. They suck up all the liquid like a sponge.
Thanks Jeff.. this one is definitely getting made! :) I've been busy with your cookbook as well.. so many wonderful things to make and so little room in my stomach... lol
Thank you once again. Every time I make one of your crockpot recipes they become instant hits at the house. My youngest is a very finicky eater and he absolutely destroyed his bowl of this American Goulash!
I have your newest cookbook on pre-order. Your first one made for wonderful gift giving as well as one for myself. This was goulash in my home and we loved it.
I’m making this in my new duo evo plus 6 quart,I love it so far, thanks for your recipe,my hubby loves American chop sues ,but I wanted to try your way, looks so yummy
American Chop Suey is made with stir fried chicken or pork, celery, onion and bean sprouts in a thickened chicken broth, served over rice, then garnished with the dry rice noodles. Good try, tho'! Just so happens I've been trying to make something like your recipe for months and have had no luck, so I am going to have to make this "Beefaroni".... it looks like just what I've been hungry for. Thanks!
Hands down my favorite meal they served us when I was in the Army.
This was goulash when I was a kid. We sometimes (often) ate it for several meals in a row when we were low on money. I still love it despite that!
Same here.
I’m doing that now ! (and we did that ‘in the beginning’)
We used to call it mush when I was in college!
Almost the same. American Chop Suey usually has Italian seasoning and bell peppers. American Goulash lacks Bell peppers and uses paprika for seasoning. However they are almost identical otherwise.
Brings back school cafeteria lunch memories.
That's the only time I ever had it. Some called it beefaroni. Some called it barfaroni.
Wonderful day , never heard of this dish, defo on the menu during the week
Just bought the book and it's fantastic. We've had the Instant Pot for over two years and this is the first time I've used. I've already made two perfect dishes. ... Guy
I made this last night. My friend said it reminded him of his mom's that had passed. Thanks for recipe it was great.
This is goulash in our home. I am going to try this in the instant pot. Have made many of your recipes and wow. Delicious!
works great. i love that it has stainless steal pot inside ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg and not the one with coating. we used to have a coated pot before, and the coating slowly peels, and i am sure went into the food that we cooked. Comfort food at its finest 😋
I'm with Richard, I've always called it chili mac, even though it's not chili. My mom used to make this and I've carried on the tradition. Yummy!
I really enjoy watching your cooking shows and I love your recipe and now I have to fix American goulash
Mom made this and it was called Johnny. She would add a tablespoon or two of sugar that cuts the acidity and gives a slight sweetness to it Delish!
Growing up my mom made a similar goulash. She made it when we were broke broke. I think she said she could make it for $2.00 and it fed my brother and I. There was enough left over for breakfast. Wow! Made this and loved it! Thanks, Jeff!
Yes!! Johnny Marzetti. I’m from Ohio and my Grandmother made it. I believe it originated from Marzetti’s Restaurant on High St , Columbus Ohio...my home town. 😊
Dayton here, Johnny Marzetti in my area too. My grown kids still ask for me to make this.
I love watching you and my husband loves your recipes.
I watch this over a hundred times * BEST RECIPE ! EVER 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Thank you for quick intro explanation. I grew up with this called goulash. Born in Va. Mom, grandmother, great grandma from Maryland.
Yes put that one in the next book. Love watching you.
I love when Richard is the taste tester 😂 he's so complimentary, but when he pulls out those "tastes like chili mac", I get so tickled 😂😂😂
My stepson only knows how to make Chili Mac, and he's 31 with no job! He puts ketchup on EVERYTHING!
Definitely making this more often. This was my first meal made in my instant pot. I had it for 4 months now. Made hard boiled eggs but nothing else. I was a little intimidated at first. But after watching you I mustered up the courage and it came out amazing because of you!!! Thank you 😊❤️
I make this so often for the grandkids, it’s to die for👍
My Mama made this (sans green pepper) plus Cheddar Cheese...no Boursin...she called it “Slumgullion”...yes, that’s actually a word!!! LOVE this stuff!! Thanks for a great memory, Jeffrey!!! ♥️🥰😋
That is what my family called it! I think that has English or Irish origin. My ma used green pepper no cheese.
@@elizabethbaldwin8488 Same here. My mom called it Slumgullion but used egg noodles but no cheese. I still make it.
Slumgullion was one of my favorites that Mama made! No green onion, but lots of cheddar cheese! Yummmmm! Miss Mama’s cooking! 😢❤
Omg it’s amazing!!! Just made it. Followed it to the T! Incredibly delicious
Looks so yummy and easy. Thank u for sharing it to us all.
Just made this tonight for dinner!! Amazing. Thank you!!
Lucky.'
Damn this was good! Anytime you have your grown son going back for seconds and thirds you know it's good! Thanks!

My mom called this Slumgullion, or just Hamburger Macaroni. Made on the stovetop (no IPots in the 1950s). No matter what it's called...it's good
That's what my mom called it too. I've never heard anyone else call it that. :)
Made this tonight. You killed it good sir! Thank you!
This is my 1st time! Glad that yt recommended you to me!! ^^ indeed that's totally American chop suey lol!! Loves it!! ^^ stay safe and blessed 💕

My nanny/grandma made this for us all the time and she called it chop suey. Oh the memories!
Great meal to make ahead and freeze for our RV trips.
My kids absolutely LOVE this recipe. I am making it again today for the 3rd time this week. It's simple, easy and so delicious!
Love American Chop Suey! Can’t wait to try your recipe 😁 Also it’s a perfect one serving for me .... yeah I said ... One ....Serving ...🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😁😁😁😁😁😁
Just made this. It's super delicious even without the cheese. Thank you so much for the recipe!
Thank you for sharing, Jeff. I have yet to try Boursin. My family and I love Goulash, as we call it.
This was called “goulash” in my home growing up. (I’m from Long Island) I haven’t had it in YEARS! I will try it in the IP, with cheese this time!
you cracked me up with the little edie line! i was out of power for last week and out of boredom i started talking like her. needless to say, i got stuck on little edie for a couple of days! lol. i wasn't sure if my husband was gonna leave me or not-lol! love you bunches!~ LuAnn

Excellent my dude! Keep'em comin! That shrimp boil is the best EVA!
Just tried your recipe. The flavor is absolutely amazing. Bravo brotha.

Iam going to try this! I tried your split pea soup and mhmm! It's one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing.
Jeff: "I have my own special surprise twist at the end!"
Me, quietly to myself: "Borsin..."
I SAID THAT, TOO!! He got me addicted to it, honestly!!
LOL! Me too :)
We all knew that, right! Lol. He did change it up though, because he usually uses the garlic and herb boursin! Lol!
Just bought your second cookbook. I have 2 now from you. Absolutely genius!
I can't wait to make it. Thank You
I’m glad you felt patriotic. I feel that way every day. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Making this tonight. I like to add mushrooms too. Usually do it in a pan and boil the pasta, Not this time.
Love it Jeff ❤️. My favorite book!!!
Keep the cookbooks coming!
I have been making this for years but not in the instant pot and we call it macaroni beef and tomatoes. Made it in my instant pot yesterday and came out so good
I like to put a can of sweet corn in mine. Grew up on this :)

I would love to see you in your "Little Edie" outfit waving your American Flag! That is one of my favorite movies!
I've made something like this for years, based on my mom's recipe. Never thought to try it in the instant pot but now....
Came for the recipe, stayed for the Little Edie reference. Stay safe & keep cooking
I love your book! It’s so easy to use!
I 💕Beefaroni, thanks for sharing and give Banjo a hug from me as well.
That's what we call it here too.🙂
