i did the same thing. built a 50x50 and used 20ft in the back for an apartment. trick is to build the building and get your utilities in and then convert it over. that way you can bypass codes. if they think you are building it for a dwelling you are opening up a whole new can of worms

Eh, I am a first time viewer, this video title w/thumbnail sparked my interest. I enjoyed your fresh rambling compared to many people's over edited videos. I have to agree with the previous reply,,it wasn't rambling, you did a great, honest job. I also feel many videos are edited way too much, and choppy. Best of luck to you, as you help finish off your dad new home.. I have been doing research (youtube), on different types of dwellings, from ship containers, house boats, tiny houses, shed, etc..., so far, liking this the best...There are pros and cons with most things, just have to weigh out personal preferences, and I think you did just that. Great Job!!!

Built well but you still need insulation and the 2x6 walls are perfect for getting a higher r-value than a 2x4 wall. Wrapping it does seal it and stop most of the air flow but heat can still transfer through the walls from the exterior to the interior in the summer and vice versa in the winter. A little spent now can save a lot in the long run.

I know, right? The neighbors don't hear you yelling at the kids and there's always something that needs done.
On the downside, by the time you think you are getting a handle on how to do things your mortality becomes apparent.
It's a good way though. Do it.
      Some things to consider:
Stick to a paved road and gravel driveway at minimum if the climate gets rain and snow. Thats unless you really like a dirty car.
Determine what services you are willing to be without. Electricity. High probability there will be service. Who maintains the service to the road?
Rural water. Is it even available?
Our local district has a set annual growth percentage because they purchase from a nearby city. I'm on a well and septic system. Aquifer will provide any volume I need. I estimate the septic was designed for eight humans in our four bedroom house.
Gas. Try to have it. In the previous house propane always needed a refill late March/early April. Now take my word here. By no means do you ever want to have your tank go pressureless. It takes a lot of effort to relight everything.
There's a phrase. It takes twenty years to get twenty years experience. I've had more, and my grandfather died while my father was young. A lot of basic generational-type knowledge did not pass to this one. The internet helped learn this hard-headed man. A lot. By about the third try I can make home improvements start to look like they were not completed by a total neophyte. Contract anything that needs an inspection.
Make friends with your new neighbors. They are the historical internet. County Extension Office and Soil Conservation Service are too and you already pay for it.
I'm not a farmer, rancher, etc. I just wanted a little space. Mowing three acres can be therapy. It takes your attention but gives time to think.
      Good luck, God bless.

I hate to "troll", but I feel this video holds much along the lines of missinformation. picking up the best I can from your footage, there are many dificiencies structurally, for a "habitable" structure at least. there are no substantial headers or shoulder stud assemblies over the openings. The studs appear to be 24" on center which isn't all bad, but there's only a single top plate. That being said, the trusses/rafters should stack directly over the studs in order properly transfer the loads to the foundation. I did notice a few overspan stud bays as the camera panned around. If the roof is bearing on ribbon headers (independently strung and not actual multiply) supported by the 6X6 posts at (?) on center, than it's merely an agriculture structure, no more superior than a garden shed. The crawlspace, the overspan/cantilevered floor joists over the "center" bearing/beam is just sloppy/lazy. When the floor is under full load the excess/cantilevered joists will have significant uplift. A knowledgeable builder would have cut the joists flush with the outer end of the bearing. Over time you will begin to hear the subsructure creek as the cantilevered end of the joists begin to compromise the subfloor. You can remedy this by applying a sufficient nailing pattern throughout the cantilevers. Contact me if you'd like. I'll spec it out free of charge for you. The Advantec subfloor is about the only redeemable thing I've seen in this structure. It is a great product. In closing, Amish built does not mean quality built. If anything, it means it's only "spec'd" for agriculture. In short, agriculture code has very low duration of loading, and usually meets poor deflection criteria. they build nice overpriced furniture, but put little thought/have little knowledge into structural engineering. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions. I so appreciate the UA-cam community and love to help.

$21,000! I think many people do not realize that you do not have to live tiny to live inexpensively. I have good insulation, so my lights only run $42 mth and highest gas bill this artic cold winter in KC was $47 - leaves me $1,159 on my monthly paycheck b/c I pay my monthly bills ANNUALLY! Wonderful video! I appreciated your rambling, especially your info about a cell phone booster and tin, and the waterproofed 1" floor sheathing. I did not know that! This is nice. Yes, it will cost more than a regular shed, but it's much sturdier than a shed, and I'm guessing the total cost will be less than a conventional house that is that high off the ground. The posts in the ground as the foundation is much cheaper than a concrete block foundation would be. Basically, what you have is a converted pole barn with high enough ceilings that made it possible for a crawlspace you can actually sit up in. Also, enclosing the area under the porch to create a storage area was a great idea! Me likey!

Your statement about not needing insulation, I feel bad of you have cold winters or hot summers cause that wrap isn't really insulation it's a vapor barrier with a mylar backing, it gives you at most an R-value of 1.5-2 its not going to do much. I know personally as I've used it on my own cabin that I'm building myself.

How so? It's not that you CAN"T heat it, it's how much will it take to do so? If there's to be no additional insulation added, (bad idea), why would you pay extra for 2x6 walls? The only real reason for 2x6 is to add more insulation. A 2x4 wall is more than structurally sound. I would also worry about condensation in there. If it's too tight, it's gonna rain inside.

Nice bang for the buck, just a couple of tips if I may...
    1. film with the light behind the camera
    2. for others thinking about something like this 6x6 treated posts in the ground will not last that long and should be in or on concrete... I'm talking 15/ 20 years (maybe longer) but someone will have to deal with them in the future. I'm sure it would not meet code in our area. People do that for outbuildings and barns but not for living spaces. It will be a big pain in the butt to repair them in the future, so do it right at the get go.

    2 Questions.
The in-ground posts. What size? 6"x6"?
And, are these posts set in an enclosure, such as a tube then filled with cement or placed in a dug out hole then filled with cement or just dirt back filled?
Thanks and good luck with all your doings.

I think around here in the MD area code inspectors would be coming out to inspect everything, maybe it's different in other areas, if it's your property you should be able to do as you please, but around here it's not very rural. I love what you have done.

That crawlspace underneath my seem like a waste to some people, but trust me, the 1st time you have to work under there you WILL appreciate it. My wife's home was built LOW to the ground - 3 cinderblocks high in the front & 2 high in the back. You have to crab-crawl the entire time you're under there and get between the floor joists to roll over from your belly to your back & vice-versa. Whether it's water or sewer, you just have to man up and bear it. If you have to make multiple trips in & out for a repair, you're crippled up the next day. And if you run into a snake, possum, or racoon, you're not going anywhere fast. I've never had to take a pistol with me to work on plumbing before, but I do now.
A friend of mine had bought an old house for cheap with the intention of doing a full gut-out renovation. It was also built low to the ground. A few days before Christmas 2018, he had a water pipe freeze up & break. He went under the house to fix it. There happened to be a 110 volt line with the old cloth & paper type insulation with enough slack to sag down to the ground. Sadly to say, it was near the water leak. The house also had the old fuse type breaker box. When he got into the water, the electrical shock killed him instantly. If he had a higher crawlspace, he may have seen the danger. I'll never go under my house again without killing the main breaker.
One last thing: if your house isn't built on a concrete slab, it needs to be at least 4 cinderblocks high. If not, even with a vapor barrier on the ground, another stapled to the floor joists, & adequate foundation vents, the moisture will wreak havoc on your foundation & floors. You'll end up having to replace floors & joists about every 10-12 years. My wife's house is 21 years old. The floor in the room that's the lowest to the ground has been replaced 3 times. It needs replaced now + the floor joists as well. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And going cheaper in the beginning is never gonna pan out in the long run.
I appreciate this video. My wife's son has been saving up money to buy a double-wide to move onto an additional lot we have. He probably has close to the money your Dad spent getting his pole barn/home built. I'll show him this. I think it's a good alternative and much sturdier than a mobile home. Thanks for the heads up. A lot of channels never talk price, and if they do it's wildly under-estimated.

Cedar or Cypress but you got to make sure you don't get moldy in there keep it dry the Amish use the stuff that they put underneath the house you have to look it up but it actually it's kind of like what damprid is made out of but it's the real stuff it's nothing that can be hazardous to animals or people or nothing like that but they have a video on it and you you put it underneath the house and it'll dry out everything underneath the house and the house is amazing with the same stuff does you get a old pillowcase full of it it'll remove every wetness around and within 10 ft enclosed in area specially

Tamara Butterworth Same here! I remember coming across a video about this, I forgot what they used but if you YT search for under house crawl space vapor barriers for Florida, with a little patience you’ll find what you’re looking for. All the research I did showed that extreme insulation of the crawl space is just as important as the actual house. In other words, NO a crawl space isn’t supposed to “breathe” it’s supposed to be dry and air tight. Hope that helps.

I'm not Amish, but this is pretty much how I would build a house that size, nothing out of the ordinary, it's a well built structure. I'm from Australia so probably would have used 2X4 framing on 2 ft centers for the walls and maybe 10ft high to allow for the porches but otherwise no changes, a big thumbs up 👍👍

Friend of mine might need a fast built home soon. Perfect timing for this to show up on my channel. You mention the cost as $21,000 for all the framing, etc. and that they put the whole thing together in 3 days. That's awesome! We do have amish communities in northeast WA, they're selling portable sheds, but I know that given a floor plan they will do almost anything. Just want to know about that price of 21g's... did it include floor joists and subfloor, interior wall/ceiling framing, windows, and that exterior layer of insulation, and all the exterior steel? Pretty sure I caught you said the gutters were added later. Of course, it's clear that plumbing and electric came after the build.

    • @Manchew
      @Manchew  5 років тому +3

Awesome. It included everything but the windows we bought them they put them in. I would steer way from the shed builder amish ones there crazy expensive. If i was you i would find a amish man that builds metal barns and talk to him he will be a lot cheaper. Yea i put electric and plumbing in for him so it would be cheaper.
