  • It seems that the days of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's rule in Turkey are slowly coming to an end. The man who has been at the helm of Turkish politics for two decades recently announced that the upcoming local elections later this month will be his last. In this episode of How We Got Here, host Jan Darasz and guest Adam Michalski, Research Fellow in the Turkey, Caucasus and Central Asia Department at the Centre for Eastern Studies, discuss whether the Turkish President has succeeded in making his country an empire again. Who will replace President Erdogan when his reign is over? What future does Turkey have? Answers to these and other questions are found in this episode of How We Got Here.

Let me put it straight gentlemen, Mr. Erdogan needs a majority of more than 360 votes to start an early election according to our constitution. His alliance has only 313 members in the Parliament. He also needs 360 votes to only take the renewal of constitution to a public referendum. If you want to change the constitution without referendum you need more than 400 votes in The Turkish Parliament. You should better do your research before commenting on such issues. By the way i did not know that the Polish people were so hostile against us, Turks. What did Erdogan do to you? Are you telling us that he made a big mistake by sending Bayraktar TB-2s to Poland? 🤔 You really made me think about Poland again, congratulations 👏🏻.

Did he transform Turkey economically? He took Turkey while we had 120 billions of dollars debth. And now we have almost 500 billion dollar debth. 80 years of Turkish republic all governments made 120 billion dollar debth. And in 20 years Erdogan made 380 billion dolar debth. If I buy you a house that worttsh 1 million and leave you debth of 2 million. Would you consider that I transformed you to something better? ))))

@darkprofile Compare this now to the US $60 trillion debt, and even the small economy of Canada, which has a $2 trillion debt, thanks to money spent on wars.
I think 500 billions is rather a bargain, some Russian oligarchs worth more than that a companies like Apple and Nvidia are valued at other 2 trillions.
Tell me what more Erdogan can do, without oil and constant sanctions, earthquakes that ravage the economy.
Many European countries envy Turkey's economic growth, Turkish companies work non stop with expansion of Turkey in Africa, East Asia and South America with more to come

@@synaestesia-bg3ew Do you have any economy education?))) Seems like hou haven’t got. How can you compare USA and Turkey? USA has the reserve money which they can control the value pf the currency. How USA manage such debth? Because they export dollars to the pther countries. Turkey collect taxes in lira not in dolöar. So 500 billion dollar debth is not managable if you cant control the value.
I asked you a simple question. You didnt answer. If I give you 1 million dollar house and 2 million dollar debth would you accept it?
Everything Erdogan dona was done by debth for inefficient prices.

@darkprofile I understand your hatred for Turkey. You were probably oppressed economically or ethnically, if you are part of a minority. You really want your point to be heard.
I don't completely blame you. The economic model that Erdogan is implementing in Turkey is unorthodox and has harmed the middle class, which may be why you decided to leave.
You probably think that life is better elsewhere, but what could be worse than accumulating debt and investing it in your own country to improve security and industry, as opposed to sending your mone to another country?
What do you think? And regarding the debt, Turkey's current debt is 462 billion as of December 2023, which is much lower than the trillions owed by others.
Think about it, 1 trillion 1, 000 billions. I think that 462 billions to improve Turkey is well spent.

Those who present the Ottoman Empire as a country to be feared are Europe and the USA, and their elected leaders. The reason is very simple, the fear of the exploited places becoming independent. Even though slavery has ended in the USA and the EU mainland, efforts to keep it alive continue very ambitiously throughout the world.

Let's assume Erdogan does not participate in the next elections, Do you think his party will not nominate a candidate to participate in the elections instead of Erdogan?
When a very experienced politician retires, wouldn't he choose the person who will take over his crown?
Couldn't it be that this elected crown prince is already being trained and introduced to the state administration?
Moreover, aren't preparations being made to ensure a smooth transition and the heir's accession to the throne without any problems?
Erdogan may be many things, but he is not stupid. If you don't believe it, ask Hakan Fidan. :)

Look at name of his party. Justice and Developement party. At the end we have 500 billion dollar debth, our economy has inflation like 90's and justice of Turkey is worse that it ever was.

Same things were said about Turgut Özal who became the prime minister after the military coup of 1980. He had the approval and the support of the military coup leaders. He was a Thatcherite and his motto was “making Turkey the little America.” Selling off public economic institutions -privatization- was his main policy. This was in a way a precursor to what happened in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union when government owned enterprises were looted by the oligarchs. Erdoğan is the continuation of Özal and his party: In Özal’s case the trauma that brought him to power was 1980 military coup and in Erdoğan’s case it was the İzmit Earthquake of 1999 in which the government looked weak vis-a-vis the destruction it caused. Erdoğan’s party was founded in conjunction with the Greater Middle East Project of the Neocons. He admitted to being one the leaders of the Greater Middle East project in several occasions. He enjoyed a period of abundance of global credit availability and Erdoğan’s government was showered with this until the global financial crisis of 2008. He sold off all government owned enterprises and racked a huge sovereign debt. Easy money has been the key for the longevity of his grip on power. The astronomical inflation figures of late have been in the making for a very long time. Likening Erdoğan to Atatürk would make Özal roll in his grave and anger the ones who see the events as what they really are.
