    We made 355whp on a 3" exhaust that necked down to 2.25-2.5" at some points. Had a muffler at the end too. Old school Greddy T78 turbo. It must be the exhaust housing on that turbo causing the back pressure, but you're where you're supposed to be power wise for that boost level from what I know. We made 355 at 13-15psi on an unported 13B-REW then with a full port job and bridge ports we made 350 about 2-3psi lower. Not logging back pressure, but I'm sure we had a ton with the tiny exhaust. Either way it made tons of pulls and drifted just fine with the tiny exhaust. Just thought I'd chime in. I'm sure the bigger exhaust housing will remedy.

      It seems car utubers have a strong aversion to a full exhaust system like its the worst thing ever

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 7 місяців тому +7

      @@BIGSMOKE-bl2lq TBH when you're rushing to get a car done and a proper exhaust can take a lot of hours, I totally get it. Plus flames make for good footage of course. The noise gets old fast though. Wyatt did good and I'm sure his exhaust will flow well, but the turbo could be limiting.
      In our case, we had a BRZ with a stock exhaust from the firewall back and a Greddy muffler. We didn't even realize how restrictive the exhaust was at some points. There were multiple kinks necking down to like sub 2.5" and when we cut the muffler open to mod it, it was a less than 2.5" pipe that teed into a 3" pipe, but went over halfway in, so it was necked down to something like 2" of actual diameter 90 degrees in 2 directions. The downpipe was a true 3" straight off the back of the turbo that went down to a 3" pipe we added and welded to the stock resonator we cut off on one side to act like a 3" pipe, hahaha.
      Anyways, even with all that we made 355 no problem, but it was limiting our top end. Power started to fall off past 7500 or so. Later we went to a full 3" all the way back to a boom tube, and that eliminated the top end restriction. The rest of the powerband was similar, just more power everywhere since the engine had been ported too. Made the same power with a couple less PSI. The main thing that surprised me about the rotary was truly how much fuel it needed to make power. It's wild!

I had to ask him what RPM he launched at! Let me say this before I tell you what he launched at... He did 3 gears worth the wheelies... He would launch at 14,000 RPM!! I don't remember what he was doing for an ET. But it was at Woodburn Dragstrip in Oregon 1980-81? That was one fast little car!!! Wyatt is gonna have to deal with that when he gets his turbo correct! I am surprised the Vargas Bros didn't steer him towards the right-sized Turbo... I can't wait for SICK WEEK! So many good racers going at it. When I was a teenager back in ancient times those little cars were common little gas savers and I think they ran a 1600 hemi. My buddy tuned a similar one and it tried to drift sideways as he punched it from about second. Nice fresh super tune with ignition and distributor tweaks. They just don't make cool little 2 door rear drive coupes like that anymore and that new engine makes what 3 times or so the power it originally had and is probably lighter. Would have been fun to see what could have been done with original mini hemi though.
    I think that little drop out center chunk in the rear of those are stronger than they look so it might hold up quite a while depending on how you drop the hammer on it. Kinda a mini Mopar 83/4 differential and those can take quite a bit of abuse depending on which bearing and gear set they had.

    As someone who raced a stock 77 corolla back in the day *mid to late 80's* your next problem is going to be wheelhop with the rear suspension. Don't be shocked if you rattle a few fillings loose.

    You need to put an exhaust on it twice as big
    Edit: I saw the exhaust on the car and commented previous sentence before it got to the part of them talking about the issue with back pressure! Rotaries need to be able to breath bigger exhaust and a bigger turbo and it will be even more insane.

    repurpose a 3" waste gate after the turbo to dump wide open progressively exhaust based on boost level to reduce back pressure..... it would stay "quite" unless you got into 7/8 plus pounds of boost, then get louder with mo' boost....

    Im on the hunt for a carbed 12a or possibly considering rebuilding a dead renesis and carbing it for my sand rail. I got a 120~ hp 4 cyl toyota 22r in it now and the idea of dropping weight and gaining power with a rotary seems way too fun.

    The way this thing was built with top of the line parts and wired the way it was along with fueltech ecu makng super user friendly. It wouldn't surprise me after sick week after all that testing if they don't decide to give it away! They havent given away car they built since they gave away the MR2. I know its supposed to be for Wyatt but it could be a good cover up story

    Wyatt was not feelin it today. You could tell he was aggravated. Definitely not happy with getting torched after the exhaust was taken off. Probably didn’t even want to take it to the dyno yet to begin with

    You can find the missing trim pieces here in Australia, we got the cars here and have plenty still kicking around so parts are available
