    Yeah….just gotta keep pushing. And BTW you don’t have a boss standing over you looking at his watch, tapping a foot. This is the most drama dramatic CT video to date! And that is a compliment…..a little trick to make us want to watch the next. I was sweating bullets and trying to manage my acid indigestion!

    CT... Great progress! She's a little crispier than she looked last episode! I'd make one recommendation on your bracing. I'd run a piece of angle from the top of the windshield post down to the back of the brace you have welded in. Then I'd run a piece from the rear lower corner of the door opening to the middle of the brace you have welded on. The 'X' will keep the door opening from moving around on you. It's a huge pain to re-square a door opening that has moved. My Ghia taught me to weld that opening as stiff as you can weld it BEFORE you cut everything apart.

      Leave the inner longitudinal in place as you replace the outer. Even though the inner has rust, that will help keep the car square. Once the outer is in place then cut out your floor pans and inner longs. Keep the tunnel in place until the floor pans are done. Try to save the tunnel. Finding a good donor is going to be very difficult.

    Hi CT, next time on the undercoating, try using a heat gun and a flexible metal scraper. Comes off quite easy. Once you have most of it off, you can clean up the remaining residue with brake cleaner and a rag. Love this series.

    Just realized that I have been following you for four years. It has been a long ride, with one thing in common: no finished projects. I think you deserve to be honored with a diagnose. It could be called "CTism", and be described as "Fear of finishing projects". I say this with "tongue in cheek", but feels partly true :)
    Is the guy that bought Rusty making or people buying one of your other projects on UA-cam? Would be nice to watch some of the cars I have followed on here beeing finished. ;)

    Genuine question, at what point do you say “It’s too far gone” and scrap it? Assuming the ROI exceeds cost of parts and labor of a project like this, do you use that as a measure of when to stop/continue? I’ve seen mint 914s and do not know where this one will end up from now and between, but rest assured I will be here watching and supporting your decisions in the process. ✌️

    • @CTmoog
      @CTmoog  6 місяців тому +2

      I bought the car for $1,500....If I invest $5 to $10k in parts "metal, interior, rubber, primer, paint, etc" and do most of the work myself it could be worth 2 or 3 times my investment if it's done well. This does not included labor cost. This is a learning experience for me and I'm having fun. Hopefully this one will turn out really nice.

  • @hansgarage1751
    @hansgarage1751 6 місяців тому

    Just started watching this segment. The sail had foam insulation inside from the factory. That captured moisture and caused rust. Missing on yours so someone was definitely in there before. Also, that tight area inside the fender behind the door handle recess was loaded up with seam sealer at the factory. With no fender liner, the rear wheels tossed decades of water and road debris up there and it's a breeding ground for rust. Karmann must have learned lessons on what not to do in auto body design.

  • @samwalton4598

    You ought to have that beast dipped and rust treated. It would save a lot of time and stop all rust. You’ll end up with a solid longer lasting car. The main thing is stop the rust and clean it up for easier repair.

  • @Level_Up_Nation
    @Level_Up_Nation 5 місяців тому

    I just got my hands on one of these, so what I am guessing is that the body and frame is all welded together. So you can not replace body panels by unbolting them, this is going to be a learning experience. lol I was hoping to been able to replace the body with Carbon Fiber parts, after 3D scanning the car.

    Sometimes its better to do it bit by bit instead of cutting out all the rust all at once, the get loses structural integrity and the rusty panels help with measuring, replicating and positioning the new panels.

    Be careful not to cut off your datum points. Work on one side at a time. More supporting struts.

    Estos bonitos coches casi siempre están igual de podridos. Me gustan, pero suponen demasiado esfuerzo para lo que en realidad son. Quizá merezca la pena en un seis cilindros, pero son muy raros.

    I am lucky because I live in Tucson. Cars do not rust here, they just wear out. My 1985 Mercedes was delivered in Tucson and has zero rust. I think you're off to spending too much time on this car. Can you have it dipped to removed all of the paint?
