matt , maybe after the last one take you can compile into a video the most memorable moments ! such as the log incident or the second gear pull with the 650 whp evo
A friend of mine had a lime green 914 in high school that he & his father rebuilt. It was definitely just the coolest car in the senior parking lot. Definitely gets a high rating on the nostalgia scale for me...
The 914 has a delightful lightness and immediacy missing from most cars I’ve driven. It’s great to see someone keeping one alive and driving it the way it was intended to be driven....
Was intrigued by that Marelli Twin Plug RSR Disi he mentioned being so proud of, looked it up and the things almost a $10,000 part! Super rare and special.
I had a 914 2 liter back in the day that was pristine. The story of this motor is incredible. I can't image how much fun that car must be to drive with the 2.5L 'four corners, global motor'. To me, this captures the true essence of the sport. A very smart motorhead who built the car he wanted part by part. Well done.
Marco was taught by one of the best air-cooled specialist ever in my opinion.I wouldn't hesitate taking any air-cooled Porsche to him.Tlg North Hollywood Ca.
Nah. That's not it. That little 2.5L will spin to 8K all day and night, but there's no rev limiter so there was no real answer to his question. Eventually the motor stops making power so you have to grab another gear. Matt wasn't gonna hurt it.
Thank you for this review. Drive a vintage 911 back to back with a 914 and you'll understand why the 914 won at Le Mans... the startling realization sets in that 914's are the best.
Jesus H. That motor is incredible and what a sleeper. A fairly humble doctor who lived down the street in my youth owned a dark (forest?) green 914 and kept it for a looong time. I appreciated that the vehicle was a porsche and was something different from the massive lumps of American steel and vinyl everybody else was driving, but never really gave it a hard look.
This is crazy. Two years ago, I watched Matt drive two of Bill-the-Nice-Guy's Porsches back-to-back, a 997 Carrera S and a 987 Cayman S. After Matt declared (and Bill agreed) that a 987 Cayman S with the 3.8L engine from the Carrera S would be the "greatest car ever," I made it my personal mission to find that car. It tooks months of searching, but I finally found one just as I was about to give up and just buy a regular Cayman S. She's a beauty. Atlas Grey, Sport Chrono, Borla exhaust, sport seats. But the big thing is the 3.8. And I found it just before my 40th birthday. It was perfect. Only one hitch: I live in Oklahoma, and the car was in North Hollywood. Now here's the kicker: Who did I hire to do the PPI before flying my son and myself halfway across the country to drive my dream car home? It was Marco at TLG! Seriously. And, of course he did a great job. Now, here, two years later, Matt is driving two Porsches with Marco himself. What a weird circle. Anyway, many thanks to Matt and Marco! The car is awesome, and I have both of you to thank for it!
Matt, in a 914 when going from first to second, just push the shifter STRAIGHT forward!!! It will do it's little jog to the right and find second by itself.
I think you can see him again on the way down at 6:30. Guess Matt had to cross double yellows to give him room and didn't want to be given shit from the police for it.
Wow, What a 90 IQ comment. I'm a Cyclist and Motocross Racer(Can You even ride a dirt Bike) and I understand Some Cyclist act like Elitists but to Possibility cause them to crash makes my Blood Boil. Did you ever think about His Possible wife and Kids at home that also would suffer along with the injuries to the Bike Rider. Your kind of thinking is just like the kid in Florida that caused all those Families so much Pain. You must be Related. You need some help. Hope someone never hurts you or your Family on Purpose so you see what it feels like.
You are precisely right, Ace. It's for everyone, not just cyclists. A single lane is usually wider than most cars, but cyclists usually don't have the decency to stay to the right of the lane more often than not.
I can remember back in the day when you could get these for a song. People hated these things. I didn't much care for em myself but I've come to appreciate the virtue of small and light. Big honking muscle cars are alright for cruising the city or eating up the interstate, but I'd much rather have something like this to drive.
Sweet! Yes it is a 'NARP', a joint VW-Porsche project. But all you haters have no clue that a well set up 914-6 like Marco's can DEMOLISH many 911s including modern ones, plus Caymans/Boxsters and other much more modern cars at a tight technical track and in the canyons... Mine has been built/serviced by 5 different Porsche shops around the L.A. area (including Marco's / TLG) and every one of those shop owners are/were 914 fanatics and owners/racers even though they also own very sweet 911s as well... (I only say 'were' because one of those guys has unfortunately passed-away.) That should tell ya something.
I remember when I first met you and your car. Our cars were almost identical save for the different induction systems and color. I like yours better than mine now, though. :-)
My father had (well, "HAS" actually, it's still sitting in the garage right now) one in Ravenna Green (Or as I used to call it "Monkey puke neon green") and always kept it in good shape, no dings, rust or dents, with vanity plates that read "CLEEN 14". It is the only car I ever knew him to drive from the time I was a baby until I graduated college and he bought the 95 Impala SS he drove for his office when the lease was over. I learned to drive in it, practicing starting and stopping in the LA Zoo Parking lot, needing pillows behind me in the seat to reach the pedals and get that clutch far enough to the floor to shift gears. No power shifting or steering or windows either, driving it meant using some muscles to operate the stiff pedals and tight shift pattern. Learning to drive on that made driving any other car EASY. He put at least 300K miles on it and put a new engine in it twice over the years, even when the gasoline went all unleaded and he had to put in lead substitute, it was an inseparable association, my dad and that car... and yes THE SOUND. it had a deep rumble-y voice like his, too. My friends and I used to be able to hear him coming to pick me up from school from blocks away with that signature sound, almost like a lawn mower; it was so strong that whenever we drove through Beverly Hills, the sympathetic vibrations of the engine would trip the alarm sensors on all the fancy cars parked on Rodeo, and we'd leave a wake of sirens singing together in chaotic cacophony, each new member joining the chorus as we rumbled past. It was almost like a cartoon character, or Wonderbug from Sid n Marty Krofft with the pop up headlights looking like eyes that opened up at night. It had nice lines too, with the top on or off. The color just made it that much more of a statement. It might be worth a little bit of money now, too, given that he took such care of it, it's not all rusted out- that green paint is even inside the trunk, but it's still shiny. I don't think I could sell it though - it's too much a part of my memories. Nostalgia is not a sufficient word for how much of my childhood lives in that car. I'd still probably need the pillows to drive it even now. But the strongest association will always be that growling engine sound that always told me my Dad was almost home ....
Matt is so brave to drive these unfamiliar cars, so fast. Not being aware of these cars driving dynamics, could easily send him off the edge of the cliff.
This was cool to see! I remember growing up with a lot of those 914s - Seeing them around LA, California constantly (and remember just FEELING (Without knowing much at all about cars) that those and the "924" always struck me as lesser Porsches. Thanks for posting! Side note: THIS is one reason I spend more time on channels like the "Doug DeMuro" (channel) - less chatting, less extraneous convo and "just the facts, Ma'am" …bare bones stats, give us quirks and features with some humor but mainly just pared down stuff we really want to see (and that's IT). Now, That said, of course, there is a place for this kind of channel as some folks want to have more filler, etc. as it can be part of the ride, as it were - I would be remiss to not add here that I do understand that :-) I guess I am just personally more of the Doug DeMuro wavelength club :-)
Can't be many more episodes left. One of my favorite channel's going away. Quality is so rare too. I already lost solomondrins channel still there but now I'm it's terrible not even watchable or even a car channel anymore two lost
Touring road suggestions. Start in Ojai on CA SR33 North, to CA SR166 North, to Cerro Noroestre Road East, to Mil Potrero Highway East, to Cuddy Valley Road East, to Frazier Mountain Park Road East, and back out to Golden State Freeway.
@Kevin Bodman Totally agree. Also try SR178 through Kern Canyon, and SR245 up by Kings Canyon NP. SR33 North to Lockwood Valley Road, north to Frazier Park is cool too.
In my 1971 911T: 1-2 gear shift: open palm on right side of knob, slider forward to neutral, slightly relieve pressure, slider forward into 2nd. You cannot speed shift 1-2.
Tip: Don't shift 901/911 transmissions with your palm over the top of gear-shift knob. Shift gears 1-3 with your palm on the right side, and 4 & 5 with your palm on the left side of the gear lever when shifting up, and on the right side when shifting down.
Hey Matt, if you ever want to drive a 914 where you wont have the 1-2 shift problem, I've got one for ya. With the V8 in the back, i simply skip 1st all together and start in second, lmk when you are in the bay area!
My wife’s first car when she was 16 was a 914, 4-cylinder. It was a 5-speed - so I guess that makes it a later model? I want to say 1974, I think? I so wish she still had that car. But back in the late ‘80s when she got rid of it, it was just a clapped out, used p.o.s. that no one wanted. Heck - even today, they’re still not all that collectible - it’s only because there are no cheap 911s left that people are starting to look at the 914 as a collectible.
Really cool and entertaining car with a nice, aggressive growl. 220 WHP for sure's enough for this little thing. Is it really that hard for a experienced driver like Matt hitting second gear, especially if you already know that it's a dog-leg layout and already anticipating the shift like from a standing start??? I think, he also drove a couple of them for his channel and didn't mess up so badly most of the times... :D
9:00 guy lets you by and there's no shifts until 10:30 - holy power band batman! This is no way shape or form a typical 914/6 "motor" as it's about twice the HP as stock. Not sure why you need the close ratio gearbox.
Yep.. little bit of motivation for me to stop dumping money into my drift bmw and start giving lucky, my little 72 some love. 5000 miles on the little rebuilt 1.7. One owner car, completely restored by the owner, a 84 year old mechanical engineer in 96. All factory parts, every rubber, nut and washer, bushing, brakes, rack. You name it. With full service records 4 binders thick right back to Feb 73. Unfortunately the man passed away, but his wife somehow decided I was the right person for it. Determined it needs some new fuel set points, a new seat frame, as the drivers left is broken inside. And something in the throttle linkage inside the tunnel is causing the throttle to stick.. One day I hope to get a Jake raby motor for it.. Looking at those flat 6 prices and my 26 year old income... Ahaha a boy can dream.
"what's redline?"
"Meh, I don't know, 7500?"
One of the best answers in the series, made me LOL.
Antonio Rodriguez How does one find out if it isn't in the manual and you don't want to blow up the engine?
Idk what's the rotor spring set to? Lol. Check out one of my few videos if you wanna hear one hit 8k ish in a 2.0l MFI 67 911.
matt , maybe after the last one take you can compile into a video the most memorable moments !
such as the log incident or the second gear pull with the 650 whp evo
Only if its set to Sarah Mclachlan's "In the arms of an angel"
This is a really good idea dude ! Hope Matt sees this and takes it into consideration
don´t forget the "it´s only got 3 brakes" one. xD
wow I just rewatched the 650 whp evo
And man he seriously lost some weight!! good for him ;)
“The squirrels are suicidal today”
A friend of mine had a lime green 914 in high school that he & his father rebuilt. It was definitely just the coolest car in the senior parking lot. Definitely gets a high rating on the nostalgia scale for me...

Looks like Matt if he had hair.
Mindful Music
I thought the same thing !
SHOCKING!
not T H I C C enough
Hahahaha, true that!

His dad Tony was amazing. Put together a 356 for me. Beautiful work.
The most under appreciated/valued air cooled rear engine Porsche until recent years. Cool ride.
Wasn't a fan of the styling back in the day. Now I like the clean lines of it.
Best one take ever Matt closing in on redline and the beautiful noise fabulous
-What's the redline?
-Eh, I don't know

Very nice. I'm a former Lotus Europa owner and I've always had a soft spot for the 914. Especially, the 914-6.
Damn, that twin plug sounds amazing!
Thank you for this review. Drive a vintage 911 back to back with a 914 and you'll understand why the 914 won at Le Mans... the startling realization sets in that 914's are the best.
What a lovely car and a fine gentleman! Thanks for the video Matt.

Still need to do an E-Type but now you're stopping this it won't happen.
Love this guy, Marco...great guest!
NO MORE 914 one takes! Everyone will begin snatching these up putting one of the last attainable Porsches out of my price range
You can get Boxster S for around the same money these days. Even Cayman’s if you hard enough
I do love the cayman S.
I love the design of the 914/6 body and that engine....I'd struggle to decide between this and a 911 of the same period.
fkn cool dude! love it when people are so relaxed like this in vids!
fun fact: carl sagan owned one.
domanicopolis really! He’s a hero of mine. Such a great man. May he RIP
Matt, in a 914 when going from first to second, just push the shifter STRAIGHT forward!!! It will do it's little jog to the right and find second by itself.
5:23 a cyclist appears, the video shifts to a flyby and then, silence for 10 seconds: Did the cyclist survive like most of the squirrels?
I think you can see him again on the way down at 6:30. Guess Matt had to cross double yellows to give him room and didn't want to be given shit from the police for it.

I nearly bought a 914 years back when I was in Uni. Damn wish I had bought it now, they are rare as in Aus!
Matt, loving that AP brother.
Beautiful white 6 cylinder 914...thanks for the video
Cute to see the beginnings of Matt and Marco lol

Not a huge 914 fan, but that engine sounds wonderful.

I remember seeing 914s run at Mid-Ohio in the early 80's. When they went around the keyhole, they would life the inside FRONT!
This was cool to see! I remember growing up with a lot of those 914s - Seeing them around LA, California constantly (and remember just FEELING (Without knowing much at all about cars) that those and the "924" always struck me as lesser Porsches. '74 914/4, '07 Cayman S. I love mid-engined Porsches
Very nice example of a driver's 914-
/6!

Marco!!!!!!
Sounds like a beauty!
quickest and best explanation of a twin plug ever LOL
So if Matt ever makes a car show along the lines of Top Gear or Fifth Gear, he can call it "Fourth Gear"! :P
I drove a 914 from Philly to New York during the coldest winter day. I thought my feet were frost bite. I loved the car up until that point.
Fell in love with this car in forza 4; adding a tiny bit of horsepower shocks and lightness could get that car crazy fucking fast.
What wheels and tires and size of them both? Looks so cool!
I hope that in 30 years I'll still have my second car. 1980 Porsche 928
I absolutely love dog leg boxes. I'm picking out my next project based around that first. It's how every transmission should be.
Matt, you need a 914/6 conversion with a RennShift and all new shift bushings...makes a world of difference :D
That blue car in the lot looked like Suzuki Cappuchino cant wait to see that.
2W3X4YZ5 please don't give out our secrets.Haha.I think that route is one of the best roads to drive in Cali.
@Kevin Bodman
Totally agree. Also try SR178 through Kern Canyon, and SR245 up by Kings Canyon NP. SR33 North to Lockwood Valley Road, north to Frazier Park is cool too.
Hush
That 12 plug RSR distributor is worth 1/2 the car:-)
How much would you say?
Canyon Racer maybe not half but pretty pretty big stack of marks
love the 914 videos
Convinced the owner of a 914 parked "near the tracks" in nw dc saw this
Sweet ride
owning two of these cars...I know and love that sound so well..these cars are amazing....one of the cars I own is a rare 74 Bumblebee.
but the bee didnt come with the "sting"lol
Balanced front to rear and definitely side to side
I love these cars I had a 914 years ago.
Love these cars.
Matt and Matt with short hair and a golden earring
In my 1971 911T:
1-2 gear shift: open palm on right side of knob, slider forward to neutral, slightly relieve pressure, slider forward into 2nd.
You cannot speed shift 1-2.
Would the 6 in this one not be torquey enough to start in second most of the time? It would only be 2000lbs wouldn't it.
Dave Wahrer no der
@Jake warren - Typically you can start in 2nd, but it's not great on the clutch.
I used to own a red 1971 911T targa
Loving the satin shades Matt,
Not a big fan of the Kraut engines but that sounded pretty good when you were wondering where the red line was
Tip: Don't shift 901/911 transmissions with your palm over the top of gear-shift knob. Shift gears 1-3 with your palm on the right side, and 4 & 5 with your palm on the left side of the gear lever when shifting up, and on the right side when shifting down.
Awesome engine sound!
Can you make a video on your set up on the camera set up? The in car recording is so smooth. Keep the videos coming! Notification squad! 🙌🏼
Love the old, aviation grade seat belt clasps.
Hey Matt, if you ever want to drive a 914 where you wont have the 1-2 shift problem, I've got one for ya. With the V8 in the back, i simply skip 1st all together and start in second, lmk when you are in the bay area!
Heck, with a V8 you can start out in 4th...
Way cooler than an ls swapped Porsche
Looks like the owner needs to do some rust repair under that front carpet. That looks gnarly.
Aaron Averett Not rust. Just old glue.
I've seen a 914/6 only once on the road here in Germany. But from the sound alone you would have known it wasn't a 914/4 :-D
If you think of the 914 as the Porsche Boxster/Cayman's awesome grandfather then the 914 becomes really cool.
They handle so well - like on rails. And were popular with autoXers
A nice car and those two guys were fun. I'll bet they got together later on for a few beers.
Almost as nice as my 74' Mercury Capri in High School. I kid of course:) Nice 914!
99ETC But wait, the Capri IS a seriously cool car. I’m still looking for a good
This is what 914/6 should be. With flat 6 engine in the middle
What else would a 914/6 be?
That sound. Sweet car.
LMAO, almost hits bicyclist, cuts the clip
He gave him a wide berth and you see him again at @6:33 everything fine
nice car, that seatbelt seens pretty safe
My wife’s first car when she was 16 was a 914, 4-cylinder. It was a 5-speed - so I guess that makes it a later model? I want to say 1974, I think? I so wish she still had that car. Heck - even today, they’re still not all that collectible - it’s only because there are no cheap 911s left that people are starting to look at the 914 as a collectible.
About to watch this - am I going to come away wanting one?
My favorite sound!
I like this car. Sounds good too.
Sometimes Matt is real critical like almost bashing people lately but this guy was like nah don’t try my baby
that motor sounds so bad ass..damn..
notice how when Matt almost runs over the Bicyclist he does a pan shot? lol
That car sounds fucking amazing
wasnt there like 2 914's made with flat 8's in them, one with a hardtop too? would love to see that
First find a 908 engine. Add scene tax, take away 300hp every 5000km and the sq route of LS
When is the last one take?
Really cool and entertaining car with a nice, aggressive growl. 220 WHP for sure's enough for this little thing.
Is it really that hard for a experienced driver like Matt hitting second gear, especially if you already know that it's a dog-leg layout and already anticipating the shift like from a standing start??? I think, he also drove a couple of them for his channel and didn't mess up so badly most of the times... :D
So from the multiple 914 stories I've heard I can determine that buying 3 fairly rusty 914s for $3500 as first cars isn't my worst idea ever
9:00 guy lets you by and there's no shifts until 10:30 - holy power band batman! This is no way shape or form a typical 914/6 "motor" as it's about twice the HP as stock. Not sure why you need the close ratio gearbox.
The close ratios help in tighter canyons. Angeles Crest is all 3rd and 4th gear in this car.
Yep.. little bit of motivation for me to stop dumping money into my drift bmw and start giving lucky, my little 72 some love. 5000 miles on the little rebuilt 1.7. One owner car, completely restored by the owner, a 84 year old mechanical engineer in 96. All factory parts, every rubber, nut and washer, bushing, brakes, rack. You name it.
Awesome!
What I always wanted one of these for was to drop a 350 into it...a 383 nowadays ;)
“What’s redline?”
“Eh, I don’t know...7500?” lmao
Matt, would their ever be a Murcielago vid up before the series ends my favorite lambo and would love to see u driving one?
The car doesn't become flimsy when the roof is taken off, because the roof is fiberglass.. geezus!
I know in a past video you mentioned where to get your glasses. But I don't remember the brand. Where can I get a pair like that Matt?
Dream car.
