From a PA native: Once you get to the level of PA, OH, NJ, IA who's best at any particular time can vary. But year after year for consistency PA's always there, for a number of reasons...a lot of these little podunk places in rural PA can barely field a football team, but don't even think about wandering onto their wrestling mat. Then you see the likes of the small PA Universities like Clarion, Edinboro, Lock Haven, IUP, and even Shippensburg...there's a reason why these schools have the caliber programs to qualify a wrestler or two for NCAAs every year.

It’s 100% PA. At the collegian level, they just dominate. I mean, 9/9 NCAA finalists win in the last 2 years, 9 team NCAA titles won in the last 11 years, and overall they just show the best wrestling. Even at the high school level, if you hear about a 1 or 2x state champ, you know they’re the real deal. Let alone 3 or 4. If you win a title at all, you’re qualified as an amazing wrestler

PA is the belly of the beast. A regional champ in PA is the equivalent to a state champ in 80% of states. You look at a few guys who never won a PA title excel & make runs in the tourney. Ronnie Perry for example..the highest he placed at the PA State tournament was 7th. Goes to Nats his senior year & he's knocking off multiple-time state champs. Phil Davis..his highest place in the PA State tourney was 4th. Goes onto be a 2X finalist & a champ at Nats.

This is a very true measure. As a regional 5th place alternate my junior year in pa. I was beating state Medalist from Va, Nj, and other mid Atlantic states in off season…Then I won my regional tournament Senior yr PIAA and placed at states. lost to a state NY state runner up 1-0 at war at the shore and I was wrestling 2 weight classes up just for the hell of it 140 to 152 back then lol ( I don’t off-season cut) … As a true freshman at a small PA D1, I beat an Div 1 NCAA all American who was also a 2x NY state state champ….A 4xOhio state champ, 2x Wyoming state champ, 3x PA state champ, A regional champ here is def equivalent to a top 3 anywhere…Needless to say our depth is almost unfathomable. Several years ago a friend of mine said his son was wrestling at meet on a Saturday afternoon. Not expecting too much, I went to the high school gym in western PA where it was being held. What an eye opener! There had to be hundreds of kids there of all ages having a good time on a cold, snow-covered winter day. There were probably six mats and the kids, boys and girls, would be called for their matches. They would each wrestle several matches during the day. I thought how cool is this. This was not a school event, it was a meet of a number of wrestling clubs in the area. This is when I realized how extensive and popular wrestling is in PA.

We are talking natives(born/raised) so it is not whether Nittany Lions or Hawkeyes are better. (Lions are, of course) but what the state itself produces. To be fair, the state population must be considered, too. Pennsylvania or Illinois, with 13 million people, might expect to produce more top wrestlers than Iowa, with 3 million people.

Tennessee has 3 million less people, but is better than Georgia, anyway. Best in the South. I must say overall, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Iowa, Minnesora. Everybody says Pennsylvania...which I did too, but not because Cael wins at Penn State there every year. He almost won 2 Nattys at Iowa State...but if he was in New Jersey, he'd win, if he was in Ohio, he'd win. And if he was at Iowa, he'd win EVERY year. Because he'd get ALOT of the out of State folks, as well as the locals. Let's just put it like this. The Pennsylvania Wrestlers are GOOD, but they're no where as good as what PennStates making them look like!! Calls got ALOT of out of state Wrestlers that have excelled there. There BEST, didn't even go to Penn State. The only recent PENNSYLVANIA Wrestler that's gonna win 4 Nationalsis at Iowa!! And that's Spencer Lee. His whole family has uprooted to Iowa City, and I predict, that one day, he will NO ONLY run the Wrestling Team, but he will eventually be AD, and perhaps even run the School at some point. The kid is really intelligent, loves the Hawkeyes, and Iowa City, and I strongly believe he'll make a life out of there.
