- Ah, the quintessential breakfast hashbrown from Mcdonald's. Unbeatable right? Or maybe we can make a homemade hash brown that is easy and only 3 ingredients. Maybe we'll win this one at the same time too?

Gotta eat them right away. McDonnalds Hashbrowns go from Golden Brown and Delicious to Soggy Gym Socks in the time it takes you to pick them up and drive home.

Also makes a big difference how busy it was regardless of how fast the drive through was.
Right lol
tbh mcdonalds hashbrowns, fries or just any food from mcdonaalds in general tastes better when cold in my opinion
I finally made these earlier today! I made breakfast burritos for dinner, and did these hash browns for my potato element. They turned out great. I was a little short on the duck fat, so I used my leftover bacon grease to cover what I needed. I also seasoned the potatoes with pepper and onion powder instead of just salt. Finally, I did the prep first thing in the morning, and the potatoes were only on the fridge for a few hours rather than overnight. IF there is an advantage to putting them in the fridge over night compared to just a few hours I would like to know. Bottom line, despite my few changes they were a success!
In a restaurant prep, you make the shredding ahead of time the shortest amount of time is 15-30 minutes, but it is recommended to give them until over night because if you season them or in the case they were dry it allows the entire batch to properly set for the following day. You definitely want to sprinkle salt on individual patties/add proportional salt to the mix before they are placed in a contain to set because salt is a flavor enhancer and generally speaking it helps push seasonings into the more denser potato variants. The salt is also how you get the really intense flavor from the crispy parts.
By proxy the way you get the super crispy and satisfying fries is a BRINE bath, partially cook them and then freeze them over night so the residual water expands and allows an even deeper more thorough frying process. You still want to salt them afterwards too, it doesn't have to be a lot. People demonized salt along with fats and other healthy things. Fried foods are generally less healthy, but the point is to enjoy it?

“This is the most iconic McDonalds item in the whole World”
Me, a French: Never knew they made hash browns...
Other than when you get perfectly hot, crispy and borderline over-salted McD’s French fries the hash brown is the top tier menu item.
Certainly the most reliable menu item by a considerable margin.
When I was in Germany a number of years ago, I noticed that they put hash browns on everything: on McDonald’s burgers, on Burger King, you could even order a chicken sandwich from KFC with a hash brown on it. Strange that an adjoining country doesn’t have ‘em.
@@SpektakOne

Maybe McDonald's had them for breakfast at some point, currently they don't really offer breakfast anyway and there are also no hash browns on the greyed-out menu :p
Or I'm just blind....
Yeah, never seen them anywhere in Europe. And I've been to an emberrassing amount of McDonalds' in many countries around here.

so, if you don't do the unnecessary confit step, lard's really just as good as duck fat, it's just cheaper. It's a different flavor profile. It's just hashbrowns, you do need to freeze the shredded potatoes so they keep their shape, though.
I think peanut oil is also pretty tasty as a cooking oil if you're vegan or something along those lines, or if it's cheaper to get peanut oil where you live.

Yes, I'd love both the original fried, and the early 2000's baked one. The current one, while I do like it, is not my favorite. Feels like they tried too hard to make it fancy, and the crust ends up hard (because its thin, and the sugar crystals sprinkled on top)

Something that bothers me: he waits until he gets back to his apartment to eat whatever fast food item is being recreated. Why? Eat it when it’s hot and ready, not like 15 minutes after. Just film the reaction in the car instead of the kitchen. I dunno why but it strikes me as almost ensuring the fast food is always worse than it might be if he ate it right when he gets it.
Truth. It would be simple to film the reaction to the food in the car. The comparison will never feel legitimate because of the decline in quality of fast food, at the time of judging.
Like imagine if he did a taste test of Chick-Fil-A fries after they've been sitting steaming in a bag. I would be u p s e t.
He mentions that his food also sits around for about an hour. Considering the filming, pictures, and b-roll
I totally agree
@@baby_king9ine Yes but the difference is that his food sits for an hour in the open air. When you bring food in a bag to a place, everyone knows that fried stuff (Fries, Nuggets, etc.) gets soggy. The bag just steams the food more than the open air. So it is a fair point. Look, I don't think that the food of any fastfood restaurant is better than his but I do agree with Kyle that as a experienced chef, Josh should know this critical point. Literally, in every cooking show in the world, it is mentioned that when you do delivery food as a restaurant, you have to think about the packaging and what kind of food you transport. In this case, the Hashbrown from McDonalds (never ever had one though, because we don't have them in Europe) is soft and soggy because it has been steaming away in the bag. Josh's hashbrown has been lying on a plate, where the steam can escape and thus it remains crunchy. Another comparison is cookies, everyone that bakes cookies knows that when you take them right out of the oven, their are still a little bit soft, however, when you let them rest, they become more crunchy as the moist in the dough evaporates....
Makin these for Thanksgiving 😁

@@lovinqxtae Actually he says that between getting the item, driving back, setting up and filming, the food he gets usually sits an hour there without being touched. So, yeah, he is not eating them as if we were to buy it and take it home.
I don't know why I watch these bc I don't cook any of it. I just love watching his videos. They're so damn entertaining.
Love it. But can we do a fast version because I was stoked to make this for breakfast now I gotta wait for this to chill!
Never thought I'd see the day truffles would be used to garnish the humble hash brown. Only on But Better.
Not gonna lie, I was waking up today wondering what Josh was gonna do for But Better and said "I wonder if he'll compete against McDonalds hash browns"
And Papa Josh delivers yet again
When the duck fat sets can this be reused for other cooking or will it go bad quickly?
Delicious
Josh: McDonalds hash browns tastes like reserved overnight oil! Yuck!
Also Josh: (Reserves oil overnight)
But his hadn’t been frying various other foods all day and was kept in a clean and sanitary environment.
ok not to be victim of the people who incorrectly use r/wooosh, but its because he properly reserves the fat, i doubt mcdonalds properly reserves whatever oil they're using, leading to that acrid taste.
If I understand correctly: Oil used for frying doesn't go bad due to time whilst cool, it goes bad due to time whilst hot. Oil can only take so much heat before it starts to break down.
I’ve used commercial deep fryers before, and they can get absolutely *filthy* if they aren’t drained and cleaned regularly every day. Considering this came from the sweat shop disguised as a fast food company that they call McDonald’s, I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t clean it out or at least changed the oil.
For the love of god, people. Clean your fryers and change your oil after every few uses. That shit gets nasty really fast.
@@captaincockpuncher they tend to "forget" to drain and clean the frier at the end of the night. Unless it one of those bougie McDonald's, they're pretty good at cleaning them usually.
At 1:25 as someone who works at a McDonald's it actually speeds up the line a lot. Because we can be handing someone their food while also cashing someone else out. Vs doing everything at one window
Wish Carl's Jr. Did this & Hardee's
I remember we had a McDonald's near me when I was a kid that had 3 windows: 1st to pay, 2nd for drinks, 3rd for Food. They eventually went to just 2 windows.
Bruh I love this dude always makes me laugh
I love it the hash brown ❤❤
If there ever was an episode that I thought he would say “quispie” again, I thought it would be for this. LoL
Had a McDonald's hash brown last week and said, "OK McDonald's. I see you."
It was damn good. I also ate it 5 seconds after I got it SOOOOO.
I watch these episodes almost daily and I’m almost surprised at how numb my taste bugs are.
Well, hasbrowns muuuch like the american ones are made (where I live) mainly in the street fairs. But at home we are making something a little bit different. It's much like potato pancakes.
And if you'd like to try, here is the approximate recipe (because we do it mostly by the feel) and everything below is for about 1 kg of potatoes.
-potatoes
-2-3 eggs
-150 ml (or 1 cup) of HOT milk
-flour as much its necessary
-garlic - as many cloves as you can humanly handle
-salt, pepper, majoram
-smoked meat or sausage - about 100 g should do the trick just fine
Peel and wash the potatoes. On the coarse grater show those bad boys who's boss here and do not wash any starch from them, just squeeze the water out as much as you can. Before it oxydizes pour hot milk over it. Let it soak just enough and drain the excess (no squeezing) with just a little bit inside. Add eggs and about 1 tbl spoon of flour. Mix well, if it is too thin add flour, if too thick splash in a tiny bit of milk. No stress, you can do it, I trust you. Grate the meat (or sausage) or chop it to the smallest cubes you can do, add it in and mix once more. Add salt, pepper and majoram in to your taste. Let it sit and contemplate it's life decisions for about 1 hour if you are patient enough and not dying of hunger just yet. After that, prepare your frying vessel of choice and add about .5 to 1 cm of oil or lard (for the authentic slavic taste of course... or you can just use the duck fat from this video). Heat it to the precise temperature of "I added small piece of potato in it and it started sizzling beautifully", with the ladle mix the potato coctail so it recombines a bit and pour it gently into the pan... then, because it's supposed to be more like dry concrete not the wet mud, squish it down to the flat disc (thiner is always better). Fry so both sides are perfectly golden (flip if necessary)... fight the urge to eat them as fast as you're making them and embrace the fact that this is not supposed to be dipped in anything.
Optional step: check your weight the next morning and find out you ate all those bad boys yourself and you gained about 1,5 kg of beauty around your waist.
So, let me know if you liked them.
He doesn’t have the balls to do Dino nuggets people will get pissed.
You can’t get better then Dino nuggies that’s why
dino nuggets but slightly worse
Dino nuggets are superior
They horrible, all off them!
The superior food
It looks better and I already know it tastes better than Mcdonalds ever could! It looked great 😋😋
@Jordan Wall report her for people to stop doing this
never judge a book my its cover
@Zeldac who? what?
It's kind of not fair, considering that he lets the food steam in the bag as he takes it home to try
Yes, but is it as FAST?
B-roll music is ballin
Dang. I’m impressed.
josh: but this one feels like it might be our first real challenge
krispy kreme donuts: *menacing*
Joshua has done it before but he still thought the Krispy Kreme was still good
"It tastes just like old grease"
*goes to take another bite*
such a Homer Simpson move
That's how some of the best burgers in the country are made, I've heard.
Used oil apparently makes food taste better
Recreating well-known foods is cool and all and I like seeing what he does better, but the best part is his transitions to b roll
Ima make this
