I agree with you and hr was also a marveleus tenor. We had Gene Kelly and Mario Lanza on one and MGM didnt know how to use him..He could dance classic dancing and jazz he could sing opera and popular music and he was a painter in.later years. Imagine him as Cable in South Pacific also on the Tab Hunter role in Damn Yankee that Bob Fosse wanted him.to do. as Joey in Pal Joey or in The Student Prince with Ann Blyth.when.Mario Lanza left the movie to.name few roles he could have done In MT sister Eileen he only danced and a non singer Jack Lemmon sang the best male songs.I will always make a tribute to this underrated dancer and singer a misture of Gene Kelly and Mario Lanza in one.
And whoever it was in the pit blowing that saxophone in the studio orchestra that day. Probably, just another day's work to him, way back when, when everywhere you turned in Manhattan you could hear this music at this level of quality.
Tommy Rall's dancing never ceases to amaze me! It was destiny that willed otherwise; if not, he would have gone done in History as the Hollywood's best dancer that ever lived. There's an old saying: "All you can do in life is to make an honest attempt; the results of your efforts are beyond your control". Even Lisa Gaye and Earl Barton, who were two wonderful dancers [the classical ballet type], didn't make it to the top. In 1953, they starred in a two-reeler titled "David Rose & His Orchestra" where they danced to Main Street USA. This was a Universal International presentation. I wish UA-cam could lay their hands on this gem.
Rall was incredible. It's unfortunate that he didn't have the opportunity to do more in his career, he should have been a household word like Astaire and Kelly. That's just the way life works, I guess. By the way, he was also a superb singer and painter, you can check out some of his artwork online.
I prefer Kelly more. The reason - he simply produced a better dancing numbers (because he danced in more ambitious films) and his dancing carier is generally better documented. Tommy Rall was for sure better technician and his expression is better too I guess, but I have a problem with too little numbers he did on screen to say he was best film dancer. The same Carol Haney - love her dancing style but I found her in only 5-6 numbers. Generally from film dancers I love and appreciate only two Astaire (most important) and Vera - Ellen (the best). Another favourites I found in ballet.
+pediatrapaola probably you know about it but: - fine and again masculine tommy rall in YT - Merry Andrew - Salud [HD] - fascinating Vasiliev in 1969 Soviet New Year TV program - "Новогоднее похищение". СССР, 1969. 2 часть (37:50)
I totally agree. Every so often I will check UA-cam for new Tommy Rall videos. I so love his dancing, spinning, acrobatics, and acting. His facial expressions were so much fun. Most definitely one of the greatest and most underrated dancers ever. I just looked him up for the first time in a little while, and he is 89 years old. I wish there was a current interview with him too as I would love to know what he is up to these days. I read somewhere he was a painter. I'm sure it would be an awesome interesting interview.
Incredible movement, magnificent athleticism, Tommy Rall is my all time favourite and so handsome, even more masculine than Kelly and the Nicholas Brothers, and thats saying somethin ❤❤❤
Always good to see Tommy dance but I suspect frustration with this kind of under-rehearsed number was one of the reasons he eventually gave up on film/TV and returned to the stage.
@@deerheart87 Agreed. This one (01:36) seemed lost. But then, they may have been given twenty-five bucks and the afternoon to rehearse before being pushed in front of the cameras. Back then, TV was considered 'one and done'. No-one ever thought anyone would see it let alone be analyzing it 65 years later. Tommy is still alive. It would be interesting to find out what he thinks.
@@keikekaze They are credited at the end of the show. The entire program, in better quality, is here vimeo.com/278222920 Rall's number is at the one hour mark.
That struck me too. First off, the lighting is not effective, and the costume design for the ladies along with that bad lighting, makes everything look worse. I thought everything with the ladies looked very clunky including their dance moves. Just not a good showing for them
Almost as if some producer watched it and said, "ya know what this number needs? It needs girls. Quick get me some girls. I don't care if they can dance or not. I just need the girls."
My absolute favorite dancer. There is no one better.
A magnificent performer, in both dancing and singing. RIP.
Yet another underrated talent. He was incredible.
Fuck ur thinkings.
I agree with you!

RIP, Mr Rall. Great performer.
The man deserves every award they've got. What a treasure!
A salute also to the choreographer and the orchetra arranger.
Agree about the arranger. This is very "Doc Severinson"-like.

@@MrRichiekaye There were a lot of jazz musicians on hand for this broadcast. Benny Goodman and his trio & sextet. Buck Clayton on trumpet. Could be.

Wish the video was brighter to be more decipherable and enjoyable.

I saw him on Broadway in "Milk and Honey" and he was fantastic.
@@aeichler ooo, what year was that?
He was a jivin Jack with Donald O'Connor. Another household name
Thank you for any new Tommy Rall dancing video. One of the best film dancer ever and for me sure with most masculine style (ballet dancers including).
+Sam Francis great and underrated in comparation for ex with gene kelly ,imo rall was far better

Sam Francis clearly l meant from a technicall point of wiew where rall's superior skills are evident

Such an amazing talent! WOW! 😮!
One of my favorite dancers. He passed last October.
Tommy Rall, RIP.
What a gem! ( the clip and the man!)
I love you for finding these gems!
The female dancers are Gretchen Houser, Jean Mahoney and Betty Scott.
He wears the crown classicHollywood hoofers . The best I’ve ever seen. Could spin better than a top.
The screen was too dark and you can't see enough but you can see is excellent.
Nothing gets me quite so excited as perfect technique.
The blond girl is Gretchen Houser . Fantastic dancer ! Tomm Rall is absolutely amazing
Wow-where did you find this? I am a total Rall fanatic, always glad to find a new dance clip or little interview...
Thanks, yet again, Alan E for this important and unique video. ( on top of all the Rall, one of the women does look like Juliet Prowse)
De los pocos bailarines que fueron desaprovechados por la industria.

The Studio didn't think so, though he was known to be straight .
The smoking!
Both Tommy Rall and Marge Champion died in 2020.

Why because the girls are bad ? The girls are dreadful
