    Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A-010 vs Vacheron Constantin Overseas Automatic 4500V/110A-B128 is a marquee battle of Geneva-based horological heavy hitters. Few luxury watch brands carry the prestige and history or command the same degree of watch collector reverence than Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Patek Philippe Nautilus versus Vacheron Constantin Overseas starts now.
    Patek Philippe’s Nautilus 5711 launched at Baselworld 2006. Technically, this model remains the “30th anniversary” Nautilus and the modern equivalent of the original Gerald Genta/Patek Philippe reference 3700 “jumbo.” At 40mm, the stainless steel Nautilus automatic is anything but a jumbo by modern watch standards, but it cuts a striking figure on even the largest wrists. Patek Philippe’s stainless steel bracelet and secure deployant clasp feature the same immaculate level of finish and intricate detail seen on the case of the Nautilys.
    The blue gradient dial of the 5711 is legendary, and this Nautilus doesn’t disappoint; its horizontal striations, crisp spectrum of blue tones, and white gold dial furniture are the stuff of legend. Patek includes white gold hands, a jump date, and minimal dial text to mar the watch face. Super Luminova paint is employed to keep the Nautilus legible by night. A screw down crown and 120-meter water resistance keep the dial in Geneva-grade trim regardless of the owner’s aquatic adventures.
    A Patek Philippe automatic caliber 324 powers this iconic sports watch. The 324’s 35-45 hour power reserve is adequate, but its finish is sensational. Hand-applied finishing flourishes includes cotes de Geneve, mirrored anglage (chamfering), two different sizes of overlapping perlage (engine turning), and black polished screws with chamfered slots. A Gyromax free sprung balance permits precise regulation in six positions, and a Patek Philippe Siloxi silicon hairspring helps to keep magnetism at bay. The presence of a Patek Philippe seal indicates timing precision of -3/+2 seconds per day or better.
    Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas Automatic has evolved in quantum leaps since the original 1996 model. The debut model was well-crafted but almost quaint; the generation 3 Vacheron Overseas Automatic is built to compete with not only the Nautilus and the Aquanaut but also with the mighty Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore.
    Vacheron’s 41mm stainless steel case draws heavily on previous Overseas design conventions and the historical touchstone of the entire series, the 1977 Vacheron Constantin 222. A cushion case profile, satin steel grain, polished steel highlights, and a prominent bezel are the salient features. The crown is a screw-down unit, and the Overseas Auto boasts 150-meter water resistance; for good measure, a paramagnetic ring surrounds the movement and imbues the watch with 25,000 ampere/meter antimagnetic shielding.
    A full stainless steel bracelet is included with the steel Overseas Automatic, but the watch also includes both rubber and leather factory straps in a blue color that’s perfectly keyed to the dial. A steel deployant clasp is included with the two accessory straps, and a quick release system permits swapping of straps and bracelet without need for tools. For good measure, the Overseas bracelet makes all links removable or precise sizing.
    If FP Journe’s “Cadraniers de Geneve” dial factory were involved with the production of this Vacheron Constantin Overseas dial, it would surprise exactly zero owners of VC’s signature sports watch. This Overseas sports a blue dial that is at once glossy, bottomless, iridescent, and beaming with a mirrored radiance in even the most subdued lighting. While the dial of the Nautilus is a time tested classic, Vacheron’s dial might be a legend in the making. White gold hands, and hour indices keep the quality of dial furniture high, and a jump date matches the utility of the 5711.
    Inside the steel case, a Vacheron Constantin manufacture caliber 5100 automatic movement keeps the beat at 28,800. This 37-jewel movement is both the first in-house caliber to grace a Vacheron Overseas and the first Overseas caliber to boast a Geneva Hallmark (Poincon de Geneve). A power reserve of 60 hours comfortably surpasses the modest autonomy of the Nautilus. The sapphire display case back represents the first of its kind in an Overseas watch.

    "You can go into a boutique and buy it" ...
    Things can change. The Overseas, especially the blue dial, is hardly available any more. Waiting lists are growing and second-hand prices are exploding. VC is part of this unavailable Trinity today. What a watch !! What a house, 260 years of history. I want to say finally, the deserved intention is there! Magnificent. The comparison confirms this even more.

    I’m going all the way with the Vacheron here. It is far more attractive and its engineering innards are at least as good as Patek if not better. When you factor in the price differential it’s absolutely no contest here. The Nautilus simply is NOT worth the ridiculous prices being asked for it.

    For me it’s the VC hands down objectively as the better watch. Even though Patek claims to have finishing standards high enough for the current Geneva, seal, Vacheron actually bears the seal.... Vacheron is also roughly 100 years older and has been in continuous business since 1755. The are the "Father" position of the Holy Trinity, while Patek is "The Son"...

    VC Overseas. I would get one today if there was no wait. VC boutique wants a 40% down payment to be put on the list with no exact timeframe to when you will receive your watch. Also, there is no way to get your money back. The boutique told me it’s up to the discretion of the Boutique Manager. I’m not feeling that especially for a watch and one I have not even seen in person yet. You don’t have to put down that much to order a car! Also, not giving you my money and then if the watch does not come for a while, I can’t even get my money back. So I will wait until they are available again.

    In keeping with the concept of “Overseas”, which eludes to it being a travel watch, I really wished VC would have done it as a GMT watch, preferably utilizing screw down push buttons, one for “+” and one for “-“, for the 12 hour hand adjustment a la UN Travel Time style. They could have utilized a 24 hour scale in lieu of the outer peripheral printing with sub-minute indices (which is unnecessary in a non-chronograph anyway). We really need “traveler’s watches” to be GMT’s. A deep red hand against that deep blue dial would be most excellent.
    Sincerely, a professional traveler!

    Okay, its March 2021 and I'm watching this video for the first time, yes I know I should have watched this 2 years ago but high end watches weren't on my radar at the time but now they are. So after watching the video for 20 seconds I already know that an Overseas is a better watch to get, that Nautilus is just so drab and boring, no wonder PP are giving the watch a revamp is needs it so so badly. VC for the win. Now I had better see the rest of the video.

    I am waiting for my Overseas. It's coming in November, price in Europe 21,000 EUR. Originally, I wanted Royal Oak 15202ST, buy they said to me I need to buy a tourbillon first. I asked for Nautilus 5711/1A they told 12 years waiting list and waiting list is closed. So I went to Chrono24 I found a brand new Royal Oak for 45,000 EUR and brand new 5711/A for 58,000 EUR. So I did some thinking, Overseas is more beautiful, stunning dial, 150 meters WR, and all in-house + bullshit Geneva seal just like Patek, and I can have it in November. Yeah, I will go with Vacheron. On top of that Vacheron has the most beautiful name in business.

    I have small wrists so the Patek works better for me. Even if that weren't the case, the Patek is a much more beautiful and unique design. It's iconic case and shape really differentiates it from all other watches. It oozes class and has so much finesse. The VC is a great watch too. The only real solution would be to work harder and buy both. Get the VC first to hold you over while you sit on an imaginary 5 year waitlist for the Patek.

    I have a VCO-black and a PP Nautilus (5726)-white. First, let’s get the status thing out of the way; in all my many years of wearing high end horology not a single person has ever commented on one of my watches. I think to 99% of the population watches are invisible (not talking about thieves) and as such really are only for the wearer’s personal enjoyment IMO. Both are gorgeous for different reasons: one is iconic and the other has such a sublime beauty to all its details that I’d say they are equal but different. The technology is also equivalent enough that it does not matter. Where I think the VCO shines is versatility. Now I;’23 the 5711 is asking over $100K…insane that people pay that when they only thing driving that price is Instagram, Hip Hop culture, and a bunch of weak willed wannabes. Will you take the Nautilus on vacation, especially if going out on the ocean or hitting the beach? You going to leave that in the hotel safe? What if on vacation you are planning a couple nice dressy dinners or gala events? The VCO is the hands down winner for ease of use, breadth of use, and given its value (while still very very expensive) can still be used as a watch and not sweat every decision of what you are doing that day. Rolling off the beach or been sailing but then getting ready for a gala event that evening? Easy, pop off the steel bracelet or rubber band, wash the watch in warm soapy water and then pop on the leather strap and you are good to go for the evening.
    VCO is pure class in every color dial and wins for me as the best overall watch in the world, bar none, including the legendary Patek.

    Hey Tim, take a look at the thumbnail pic and then see what happens once the video starts. For some reason, and only recently, your camera isn’t really picking up colors very well. I don’t know if it’s lighting (maybe a higher color temperature would be better) or if it’s recent camera acquisition. That spectacular blue dial on the Overseas looks more like a dull gray/black on the video. I just figured I’d point that out because we’re missing out on colors.

    VC is beautiful but if I'm paying this kind of money I dont want it to sink in value as soon as I've bought it. A stainless steel blue Nautilus, blue Royal Oak, or steel Daytona will all hold and increase their value if you can beat the waiting list. VC is beautiful but it just isn't as instantly recognisable as a blue Nautilus, Royal Oak, Hulk, Batman etc. and so there is less demand if you ever need to sell.

      @jordanfriedman2134 3 роки тому

      PP no longer pays its dues to get the seal. It was stated seal standards weren’t high enough for them so they ceased affiliation.

      @@jordanfriedman2134 That is indeed what PP said, but does not necessarily mean is true. Without any shadow of a doubt and not many would argue otherwise, the Overseas case and bracelet is of a higher level of manufacture to the PP. Even Rolex, the king of lazy create better bracelets than PP. That is the weakest part of a Patek. Patek dress watches are wonderful, but the Nauti is lacking in some areas. Dont get me wrong I like Patek and am on waiting list myself, but I bought the Overseas first as VC are better pretty much across the board. All of these points are subjective and is just my take on it based upon the things that I look for in a watch, I know that this doesn't make it true for all people of course. I think what most would agree on though is these are both beautiful watches and anybody would be delighted to possess either :)

    I understand PP is extraordinary and totally mind-blowing manufacture, but my favorite is VC all the time. I guess PP is over branding and making the products too expensive. VC is also not cheap, but more reachable and especially the Overseas 3rd Gen is something more than PP Nautilus IMAO. again, PP is always super. I just like VC more than others. Probably the history! boys like history :D

    You know Tim it's funny how VC was onto something with the grande date versions of the overseas which I feel is now lost. On this occasion the 5711 is the more understated & therefore more versatile. This version of the VC is too shouty & dare I say it, brash. The model line feels like it's lost its way & doesn't quite know how to properly market itself. That 4400E you reviewed recently is proper VC 👍🏻

    For me it’s the Patek, the Vacheron is rather ordinary looking, even though I do like the luminous blue finish of the dial and the easily removable bracelet. Which I think is more stylish than the watch itself. I am surprised at the lack of hacking seconds on both of these very pricey watches though.

  • @tendrams
    @tendrams 4 роки тому

    Let's see...one could buy about four or five of the VCs at grey market pricing for the street price of the blue dial Patek, right? Frankly, even at the same price (and if I had to keep the watch and never re-sell), I would take the VC. If someone gave me the Patek without the "no selling" clause, I would get rid of it ASAP, buy the VC....and a YG Rolex President AND also irresponsibly take a grey market Pepsi for about $19K. I would likely also have enough change to take my family on a nice two week European vacation. Think about that for a minute. That's just how nutty the market for the blue dial Nautilus is.

    Hi Tim,
    Can you tell me please why watches of this class don't have a hacking second?

    • @49fiori
      @49fiori 5 років тому +2

      Patek believes from a technical standpoint that stopping the balance introduces rate variation... I don't know if this is the case, but this is what PP Geneve told me when I asked them the same question. They are very romantic in my opinion, they don't like the idea that you can stop the movement. I think the movement should be stop when it runs out power. It's just a traditional way of doing things. But I think 5170 chronograph has hacking second, right Tim? I could be wrong.

    • @giakhanhthehinhcoban

      49fiori True. As I understand, all manual chronograph from Patek have hacking second ( or stop second mechanism)

    Tim crushed this Versus. I prefer the Nautilus. I heard Gérald C. Genta designed the watch for women, is that true Tim?
    The Overseas case looks pregnant/bloated to me...I wish it had the 222's shape. Also the Overseas was just designed from the ground up and the best they can do is mobile stud index (no free sprung balance), 1/2 bridge (not full), and a ferris ring (no silicon)? The Nautilus is older and has more technology then the Overseas. Vacheron focused too much on "show" (3 straps, pretty dial) and not enough on "go" (movement toughness, brighter lume...the difference between 120m and 150 water resistance is academic).

    Am I mistaken or does the Overseas clasp also feature a tool-less micro adjustment on each side of the clasp? I've noticed it before, but never seen it demonstrated nor even mentioned. But always a significant feature... unsure why it would never be mentioned.

    • @cheapocars9428

      In fact it is true and for me and many people it's very important feature, especially when flying. It's "only" 2+2 mm but usually this is enough to make difference. But Nautilus' status is quite handy when traveling as well. It can open doors and give comforts for free that Overseas just isn't capable 😉
