Umu: song breakdown
Sean: aespa mythology

Ningning is chinese, Ningning would agree with the Chinese government to detain the Uyghur people.
he’s in this for the lore LMAO
@@rndfelice7372 bruh. i think all chinese people doesnt agree to that but if they spoke up against it they will be punished
more like umu: breaking down
not that I blame her, because I had essentially the same reaction to the song and its many transitions lol
I love how Sean is the official lore keeper of Kpop knowledge
I know right?
#Taeminbestvillain
He is so nerdy haha
When he mentioned the aes when the song changed completely it makes sense to us why the song changed completely coz we're in the aes section.
He's amazing
Cant wait for EXO's comeback hope he comes thru lol
i put this song into a playlist called: “i am going to crash my car” because there’s some chaos to it but not at the same time. but enough to hype me up. definitely a song to drive to
and it makes sense since the original demo goes with a movie that involved a lot of action car-y things
@@mimiomimasu Gimme that playlist now
I suddenly remembered the classical musicians react to Zimzalabim and one reactor said it was not a good song to drive to lmaooooooo, SM keeps on expanding the playlist 🤣
🤣🤣🤣 can you share this Playlist please
Having Unlock It by Charli as the first song... *chefs kiss*
love how sean is calling out all the lyric references to the lore and umu is just ??? the entire time lmao
As someone working in the sound production field, I don't care too much about the song's structure being "random".
The sound quality of everything is eargasming to me, and that's enough. The chorus is simple yet striking and hypnotizing in some way. The transition into the "totally different song" about 2/3rd of the song is so fucking addicting I just can't explain it. As always, SM's production value when it comes to sound design and quality is through the roof.
YES. AGREEEED
exactly the same thoughts it just works so well 🔥
I feel the same. because of this kind of sound quality in SM music, i stan SM group music production from TVXQ era. Each group definitely has a color and so SM. Until now, i still listening to their album, from TVXQ, S.E.S, BoA, SNSD, Shinee, RV, Exo, NCT and Aespa singles.. top notch music.
Ikr I never understood why so many people immediately criticise songs when they switch into a “totally different song”. Like it sounds good?? So why do people hate it for no reason? I find it so damn cool every time someone has the guts to make a song like this cos it actually makes it interesting and not the same old boring structure. I agree with you it is so damn addicting when it changes.
@@cocopuppy5165 Most of them who hated the song are probably 4th gen fans (no offense totally) who probably don't know about SM's music (OR someone who just doesn't know about what real kpop sounds like) and only knows/used to listen to a public friendly songs like BTS dynamite or any BP song. Again, no offense to BTS and BP. Both are great groups with great songs. I just set them as an example.
Orrrrr 'Next Level' is just not their type of song. It is totally not a song for everyone and we can see it already. But what i can't stand with is that they make that as a reason to hate on aespa and the producers who made 'Next Level' saying it's a really bad song when every music majors i know love 'Next Level' and call it genius because of how different it is than others.
Haters: it's not their song
SM: gee thanks just bought it 😎
one more of many they've pulled from decent up to Legendary
ua-cam.com/video/vbH4Lk5wYWg/v-deo.html
They did this for SHINee and Juliette. A less popular song, they bought it and changed it to fit their group. Juliette is Corbin Bleu's 'Deal With It'. Ngl, I don't follow the fast and the furious franchise so I would have never known this was a remake. 🤷
girls' generation with i got a boy and red velvet with zimzalabim went like this before, and here comes aespa with next level
I'll add nct punch to them
@@cristiandraws yes but the feelings that had me going through doors and doors of beats from igab, and the rollercoaster ride from zzb is what i'm talking about
I think this is more like red velvet rookie
Next Level sits at the same table as 100 and Punch for what it feels like to me haha
I'd also add F(x)'s Red Light... all of'em BOPs
"Can the verse be also the chorus?"
I laughed so hard, I flew to Kwangya.
sean and umu trying to dissect the structure of the song is definitely me on the first listen. now i just experience it.
yeah, same 😁
Can’t fight it… just need to surrender to Next Level….
Yeah, I think the experience really got me, it makes me bounce and it just feel fun
same i was so confused with it at first and now that i understood the structure i am enjoying the song better
Knowing SM strucue of some of the experimental songs, I already knew what the wonders of multi listens gave me ;) ... So, I knew this was gonna get me too !
As a longtime Kpop fan, I find aespa very different and very interesting. Not only is their talent gradually being revealed, but we also see in them a special that is hard to say. Let's support the girls!
I agree to this. Coz for me I feel like it’s somehow getting boring with the same song structure, same genre, same concept of kpop groups. But this, Their just a breathe of fresh air. They give you new experience.
And Now
æspa Is Ranked No.1 At Melon
IS THIS A SIGN GEN 4 IS FINALLY ACCEPTED BY THE SOUTH KOREAN NETIZEN
If you prefer something different and dark from girl groups, I highly recommend listening to Dreamcatcher, they are the only girl group that has maintained a consistent Rock/Metal sound on their title tracks right from their debut "Chase Me" to their current release "BEcause", they have a very interesting lore/storyline as well in which they become Nightmares.
I love how sean is trying to link everything to the storyline, he seems excited about it
And he remember about NU ABO f(x) then connect it to NU EVO.. I love it
@@shelv7607 i was like "Nu Evo?" I felt not strange, and now because of him i remember the "Nu Abo" by f(x). Thanks to Sean :D
@@endyyeonsale2153 wow thanks to him... Hhaahahha
@yummiwatch yes, at first I thought it's only me too.
I love how he pointed that aespa is the only group with lyrics about the lore (like, exo lyrics can be about exo-l exoplanet storyline too, but we have to admit it's mostly about romance)
The thing I love about this song is that it requires me no certain emotion to listen to it. I can listen to it whenever I'm happy or sad or pump up or whatever and I still enjoy it. I don't know if it's just me though. 😁
omg same!! Or I guess I just feel badass after it lol
agreed
@@maed3266 sameeeeee ahaha
Saaame their song make me work my brain out and try to understand their meanings.
Idk if I’d wanna listen to it in a sad mood
I’ve been listening to this song while writing my essays actually, for some reason it makes me feel like I’m a hacker living in a dystopian world... but I’m just typing in a word document on my laptop. I totally agree that it’s really fun to sing along to, especially the “next level” chorus. The very fun hand move makes it even more enjoyable lol
lol same 😆💖

Me too, I'm doing my thesis now and this song make me 🔥🔥
BOHEMIAN RAPSODY OF SM:
SNSD- I GOT A BOY
F(X)- RED LIGHT
RED VELVET- ZIMZALABIM
AESPA- NEXT LEVEL
EXO- TEMPO
NCT- RESONANCE
SHINEE- DON'T CALL ME
SUPER JUNIOR- HOUSE PARTY
SUPER M- JOPPING/ONE
I'd say Super M- ONE 😊
@@keikae6818 yeah, One too
From NCT I think it's definitely Cherry Bomb. Resonance is a mashup tho, ofc it has many different sections and the transitions are kinda predictable. But CB is really unique. Remember when CB first released everyone was confused and said the song was weird, hard to understand, and sounded like 4 songs in one
Yess and I love it. I wish people would just let loose of the set same structure a bit more and try to be open-minded to those interesting structures
PUNCH AND SUPERHUMAN too
I'd say the structure is:
Intro --> pre-chorus (ooeeoo) --> chorus (Next Level) --> transition --> verse --> bridge (skips second chorus) --> swung section ("bridge 2") --> pre-chorus --> chorus (ending)
Yeees
isn't this missing the "watch me while i work it out" part or did you include that as part of the bridge section?
@@chewsdae part of the verse. You could even view it as verse-to-bridge transition.
Yesss, exactly
i think the second bridge was an interlude, but i 100% agree.
I've been seeing comments from knetz that Aespa's Next Level feels like a combination of sm groups' music style. Starting from S.E.S., to BoA, TVXQ, SNSD, f(x), EXO, Red Velvet, and NCT 🤔
I honestly can see all of these except for SES 🤔
Then again, I only really know Be Natural so I can’t say much lolol
@@bagel5056 The swing section has some crunchy RnB/Jazzy chords that seem reminiscent of SES
@Samantha G omg i thought i was the only one who thought ningning reminded me of bada!! a lot of ‘oldies’ have said ses’s bsides are just as experimental to this song so maybe that’s another reason knetzs are referring to ses
@@bagel5056 S.E.S is definietly there.
A lot of my friends were disappointed with this song, so I went in with low expectations. But to my surprise I really really love this song. I can’t really feel any connection to this song emotionally though, because multiple different sections don’t let me stick to a certain mood.
Edit: Also, this is very much a fandom lore song lyrically. I don't stan aespa, nor do I plan to - I have only so much time and only so many groups I can stan. As a result, the lore is lost on me XD
the only part i really liked was The "Nævis is calling"
same though i unexpectedly enjoyed the song and i played it when i was just vibing, doing chores or in shower
honestly i don’t really like the song, but now idk why i keep listening to it lmao i can’t explain the feelings
From black mamba and now next level, I never like the song on the first listened but going to loved it when replay multiples time I don't know why
Truee so truee..
I don't stan aespa yet but this is definitely my favourite release of 2021 so far. It might just be me but I actually love that the chorus and verses are so sparse because it makes their vocals loud and clear and emphasizes that synth. And the middle section gives you a break when it starts to get repetitive. This song makes me feel like a confident boss bitch,, like I'm on the next level.
Me either even though the main point of the lyrics is about their fight between them and black mamba but in some reason I find the lyrics motivating hahahaha sounds weird.
Same lol I feel badass hahaha
Yeah same!! I'm obsessed with the pronunciation and inflections that are highlighted in the vocals!! So addicting!!!
I just have a love-hate relationship with this song😭
SM put their own colour in this song... from the Fast and Furious movie
LMAOAOAOA right !
That's kinda flex - like eff your racing films (who watches that), I'm gonna buy it😎💵💵💵
SM has been doing this thing throughout the years where they completely switch up the structure of songs and I love that so much. It keeps me on my toes. I Got A Boy, Zimzalabim, Punch. All of them are so well done and so is Next Level
f(x) Red Light
honestly this song is so good kinda sad many people don’t like it since it’s “random” but that’s what drew me in since it gives off iconic SM vibes but everyone has their own taste so i understand ^•^
But really a successful song...😆
Lol, yeah when SM put 2 songs into 1 song, their fans immediately said this was very iconic, this was new and this was refreshing. What if other GGs are not from Big3 make it like that, surely you say this is very bad, this is not acceptable to the KPOP world, and this is flop and Blablabla, fu*k you!!
Idk I've been an SM stan for ages and somewhat Next Level doesn't give me SM vibes at all😂 In general Aespa doesn't give me SM vibes which I don't mean in a negative way (I stanned Black Mamba so hard lol) but this song is seriously not a masterpiece in my very own opinion🤷🏼♀️

this song is strangely addictive to me i haven’t been able to stop listening to it. the first couple of replays, i felt like the chorus got a bit repetitive because it is a bit lacking in energy but now that i’ve heard the song a handful of times i actually get really hyped during the chorus. i also really appreciate the amount of effort they put into the lore, so listening to this song does feel like i’m part of the aespa universe
and emphasis on the addictive part because i’ve replayed this song more than i did black mamba in total it’s just so different and minimal i love it
This!!! I just can't stop listening to it!!!

No Wonder South Korean Banned Their Student To Listen To This Song During Exam Day
Someone get them a pen and paper lol. SM def knows how to mess with people. Legend says they're still trying to figure it out. The song makes no sense but it works
I’m mind blown that sean has the brain capacity to track the musical elements and sm universe storyline all in the first listen
i don't care what other think tho, to me this song is absolute bop! its so hard to find a unique and experimental-esque in nowadays kpop and when aespa brought it to the table i know that i need to stan them straight away! also, the gp really loves it so in the end of the day they're still winning

I’ve been thinking of the form more of:
Intro - Verse 1 (Karina just says Next Level in the beginning which is similar to the chorus) - Pre-Chorus (ooeeoo part) - Chorus - Post-Chorus (Lalala) - Verse 2 (Nu EVO) - Work it out part (don’t know what to call this transition) - Bridge (Def Typical SM) - “Swung Section” - Pre-Chorus (ooeeoo) - Double Chorus
Anyways, loved it when I first heard it, and I love it more every time I listen 🙌🏾

This song is about their concept. Thats why this is not just the regular song that other group are releasing, so I dont care when others say they dont like it. This song is a guide to understand more Aespa's concept.
Its quite catchy and not only that, but the group's vocal is FIRE.
Just wait until SM give Aespa normal song, they would literally shut the haters off.
Feels like this song is a callback to Rising Sun by TVXQ (chorus only repeats two times tho) with the change of bpm and "verses that never repeats". Hope the classical musicians will react to this song too.
ooh... yesss
The jazzy part scream tvxq, when I heard winter I legit only thought of uknow in spellbound. It’s like the exact jazzy swing feeling.

Something I thought was interesting was that even in Korean, the lyrics still match the same rhythmic pattern of the original English lyrics of the Hobbs and Shaw OST! For instance, they switched out "Check it out, check it out, check it out" with "제껴라, 제껴라, 제껴라" and the consonants line up pretty well; I love when translators make clever translations/changes like these!
SM loves to make a kitchen sink kind of song like Next Level. Other examples include SNSD's I Got A Boy and Red Velvet's Zimbalabim.
SJ's recent House Party is the best example.
This is cool to watch. We co-wrote/co-produced this song, so I could break it down for you.I honestly had a good time watching you two figure this out.

For some reason when Umu asked about how does this song makes us feel the first thing I thought of is CONFIDENCE I feel like when listening to Next Level it makes you feel good about yourself and gives you some sort of confidence.
Ps. I have heard about the NU Abo and NU EVO similarity from Sean as I haven't read any theory explanation talking about that yet. And I'm so happy he was able to recognize the part from Resonance.
I'm here all for SM Culture Universe! Let's go to KWANGYA!
Yeah me either even though the lyrics is talking about their fight between them and black mamba whenever I read the lyrics I feel motivated at some point ex: "Watch me while I work it out" many people may find it simple but me I find it inspiring something like watch me till I reach something.
i am utter SM trash so it's no secret why i love this song.... not only is it like SNSD's I Got A Boy or somehow kind of like 127's Punch to me,,, but SPELLBOUND BY TVXQ!! THE TVXQ VIBES ARE IMMACULATE. WINTER'S SM PERFORMANCE VOCALS
I saw a comment that said: Next Level is a 4 minute explanation of SM groups.
F(x) is mostly known for it but.. I gotta agree bc *every* group (even the soloist) has a change-up in at least one song.
yeah.. this song is definitely ear candy while also managing to make me nostalgic for that SM sound
A masterpiece from SM again. It's like 2 or 3 songs sections in 1 song. I hope more Kpop groups can do these kind of songs, it's what makes pop music interesting. :) The song is still amazing catchy and musically flows well too.
this whole song is so rhythmic and catchy, it's so good! thanks for breaking it down :))
I'm glad to know that at least umu and sean reacted to next level. Knowing that other kpop stans have been trying to bring down the girls and next level, saying it's a "bad song" and "overly-produced song/group".
But now we have people who are very well known/studying in the music field making good comments about this song and the story plot (SMCU) that aespa is in and it's really a big win for us MYs (and pink bloods lol).
I'm really excited to watch future reactions for other sm artists' songs since we have so many kpop legends making comebacks/solo debuts.
Big thanks for umu and sean for making this reaction video. Its entertaining and informative as usual, even though I don't know much about music but i like watching these kinds of videos. Makes me feel smart though im actually not lol.

So the song is more like a musical theatre, you can see that aespa , æ aespa, naevis and the black mamba are talking to each other, that's why the song keep changing.
.
*Edit* *-⭐
.
like when the part beat drop the following lyrics is naevis callin , so they are caling naevis and the æs, then when this section ends it ends with We against the villain, what's the name?
Black Mamba, so here they are back to fight the black mamba after they called naevis.
*this is what I got , maybe it's true or false, it's just my theory*
also I really liked the song it's so good, it's been on a loop since they dropped it out🙂
Exactly! It was definitely telling a story based on the mood song changes.
I also assume that after the 'beatdrop' part that was the ae's who's singing.
Yesss. I also think like going to different areas like in a game. Different world/level, different bgm.
Your mind- 🤯
Yeah.... I Got A Boy is 9 girls talking/Chatting with their own love experience (There are some different love story, advice, happy lover, angry, sad, jealouse etc).
Meanwhile Next Level is Girls, their Ae and Naevis are talking about Kwangya and How to destroy Black Mamba. There are the girls part, Ae part and Naevis part.
This song makes me feel like a boss bit*h tbh. Also idk why but it never felt confusing to me, yes the change part way through was a surprising at first, but I kind of just went with it. I'm so used to SM's current song structure of the big drop and beat change before the final chorus, and for me this is a natural progression for aespas futuristic vision
Love the switch between the beats, it could've been a smoother transition but nonetheless it's a fun song.
The editor should get a raise!! Btw Umu is such a mood!! 😂
lmao i was heavily anticipating Umu's reaction to this.
same! and i gave in to the temptation of listening to the f&f one so when the switch up happen i was like 'what in the i got a boy is happening'
The first time I heard this song I felt the “SM” vibe. Watch how in the next 6mo or year how certain groups will put out songs with similar structure. It happened with Red light f(x) actually a lot of F(x) songs, zimzalabim (RV) and SNSD’s IGAB. And plenty of NCT songs
Aespa following in the footsteps of their SM sunbaes with this song XD
For me This song is literally one of the best song.
Idc what anyone say, This song is perfect
I love Sean point that they sing about their universe. They're definitely unique in that aspect. Groups usually don't commit to their concept so their concept comes of gimmicky
Fun fact: SM bought the copyrights to this song from a soundtrack for a fast and furious movie. The main “next level verses and chorus” are from that.
At first I was really disappointed in song, not gonna lie, I thought it was less catchy copy of I got a boy, and forgot about the song right after listening. Next day I could myself singing out of blue:" I'm on the mext level.. " and it kinda gave me I'M THE MAIN CHARACTER vibe while I was just walking. So I gave a song another listen and I liked it a bit more. Then I listened to it again, and again and it grew so much on me that I really love it now
I agree
This is vibe I got as well
Yessss
That's how typical SM's song work. Some people hate it when they hear it at first time, but there are always one part of the song that will be remember by people and it will take them to listen it more and more. That's why, there are some iconic repeated words at their song. At my cases it will be Red Velvel Rookie and NCT 127 Simon says, especially simon says because I suddenly replay it after 2 years
Even if I'm not Yoo Young-jin, I'm so happy that these intelligent musicians get trouble while listening to his songs. So satisfying...
Has the same vibe to igab snsd, zimzalabim red velvet and red light fx sm ggs slaying even when given experimental songsss!!
This is so fucking interesting, the way SM messes with people's heads!
Really enjoyed the explanation of the structure. I was hoping to hear you react to this one. I listen to this one when I want to feel creeped out and on edge to wake me up, to answer your question. It's stressful to me, sounds like a boss fight is coming up. The editing had me dying, especially the SMifying :)
Its actually only 1 switch. The lalala part is part of the original song.. The melodies part are blended well. The only big switch is the beat drop part. After several listenings, its sooo good~~
Does anyone else noticed that the "beat drop" part really sounds like EXO´s Growl???? I like how this song collects different styles from SM old songs like f(x), exo, nct and snsd
“They musically take us into the….the KWANGYA “
Can’t agree more . I can do relate to this on the first listen 😂😂
Well this is SM and we have heard a similar madness before with I got a Boy from GG! And it is soooo gooooood!
it gives me bad ass/runway vibes with the sassy cheerleader talk-singing combined with the futuristic bass house and then it gives me chill/nostalgic vibes with the jazzy/r&b section filled with their powerful vocals and groovy back and forth rap. also i find the song really, really catchy. the amount of melodies, ad-libs and parts of lyrics that stuck in my head were a lot. the "ooh eeh ooh eeh", "i see the nu evo", "that's my naevis, it's my naevis", "naevis calling ae", the "ae" that they sing between ningning's pauses during the interlude, "we against the villain. what's the name? black mamba" and the way they pronounce "next level" are glued in my brain. i'm glad that koreans are enjoying the song and it's doing well on korean charts. they say the song has old kpop vibes and is sm style. it was compared to snsd i got a boy and tvxq spellbound, which are songs that i personally love.
the merch looks so good omg

Well thats the point🤣
I dont know why people find it difficult to relate to the song.. I have been living in a parallel universe since forever.. inside my head. Now this song is the background music in my imagination.
I love songs like this because it takes me longer to get bored of them (before coming back to it months later)
Definitely 2021's most interesting song, it's so new and just blew my mind. This is so cool and I can actually play this everytime and just feel hyped.
Sean pulling out f(x) NU ABO from 2010 and Umu's brain was like: I can't function myself to time travel 🤣
aespa : ohhhweeooowee~
my brain : I’m about to raise the roof
10:48 is the thought process of everyone trying to decipher it.
15:11 perfectly in sync!! OMG
Is anyone gonna talk about how Sean being a real SM stan? He was waiting for an after credit 😂
I just love the vibe of this song. It makes me feel so badass with the chorus and the verses and the bridge and the beat drop part makes me feel like im a r&b singer/rapper on the stage. I've been listening to it a lot actually with like no specific mood i have to be in.
I relate to you guys stressing over figuring out the form. I was writing a script for my own video on this song and it was a mess 😂😂
I just love how he noticed that part sounds like NCT's Resonance hehe
"Oh, ok, Kwangya already"
this is just every SM stan when they heard SM groups lyrics mentioning Kwangya ever since SM announced the SM Cinematic Universe concept LOL
the switch up in music style midway sounds exactly like an SM song that BoA would perform to. And SNSD.
for it being a remix, they changed up it up so well and the bridge/swung section was the cherry on top! Really really good song honestly, I love ittt :]
Yay you guys did it so fast!! Was looking forward to you and Sean’s reactions to this, Umu! 💚 also hey Sean you’re cute 👉🏾👈🏾
NU ABO as far as I can remember it means new blood. NU=New ABO= blood types. I dont know if it is correlate but this day SM introduce pinkblood which is basically fandom name for SM's stan
This song gives me a quiet confidence. It’s not an overt, big confidence. It’s more like an understood power. Just overall being comfortable and not needing to shout it out.
I LOVED IT! I've been listening to it every morning when I wake up, it makes me feel ready and like I can take on anything the day throws at me :)
Idk it's because i heard many songs from SM's artists, so i don't feel confuse or weird... Like ... "Come on... It is SM" lol...
I heard I Got A Boy, Zimzalabim, Punch, Party House, etc. So i've actually enjoy the song even it was the first time ~
I love next level, I cannot stop listening to it. I think its a classic sm song and is very unique. You reaction was amazing. Loved the way you dissected it.
The beat drop shock reminded me so much of the shock of the rap section in super junior's house party. At this point i think it's tradition for sm groups lol
personally, when I first heard the jarring transition in and out of the bridge/swung section, it reminded me of when you go in and out of a sub-section (perhaps underground?) in mario and the music changes but then you pop out the pipe again and the music is back to being familiar again. I felt that was kind of what they were going for with the whole 'next level' concept like a video game but that could just be me
i'm addicted to this song
your editing is so funny in a heartwarming way shdbd like wow both informative AND earnestly fun how wonderful
YESSSSS I was waiting for this
Those transitions 🤯
Makes me smile to hear Sean's commitment to the lore (and being able to catch up and stay updated!), respect! :D I really liked your initial take on the song, and the structural symmetries were interesting given the "ae" logo for aespa also preserves this kind of mirroring, symmetrical effect. The MV itself is about traveling between the different worlds -- not just lore wise, but if you see the visual effects throughout the MV like how they would turn the background into blurs and fluid, metallic swirls -- so it makes sense. This was fantastic, thank you for exploring the form of the song and other elements like the percussive effects and change of pitch.
Despite the intro then recurring and catchy guitar, I *also* didn't connect how similar it was to the Black Mamba intro then recurring guitar. Other modifications to the Fast & Furious sample I also did not notice, so thank you.
Ningning's part is indeed very "SM bridge" -- it seems to have "Father of SM" Yoo Young Jin's DNA all written over it :) nearly forgot to mention...I've just been thinking about the arc of SM Girl Groups this week, so wow, the Nu EVO x Nu ABO connection was delightful -- both f(x) and aespa both have the Born to be a Rebel theme to their team image since debut, but the worlds are so different (New Blood x New Evolution). The chromatic "la la la"s was a tiny reminder of the sinister, dystopic fairytale of Red Velvet.
OmGGggG I've been waiting for so long for you to react to aespa!!
ppl hate on this song but i think it’s ICONIC i love how they switch it up in the middle and then go back like idk and the instrumentals are just so good. i just feel like a baddie when i listen
