It's a great example of when visual storytelling can save the established lore when retcons are involved. That pause could be viewed back in 1977-1980 as Obi-Wan being unsure if he should share that Vader killed his father. But 1980-2005 changed how people viewed that moment, as Obi-Wan being uncomfortable telling the absolute truth to Luke that Anakin is Vader, most likely to keep him safe from possibly falling to the Dark Side. But 2005-onward added-to/slightly-changed the scene as a way how to view it as Obi-Wan still feeling regret about his failure towards Anakin, even though he had managed to come to terms with it.

My favorite part of Darklighter is it establishes that Skywalker is actually a perfectly normal name for Tatooine. Last names on Tatooine are all just protagonist names, and I love it. My Star Wars character's last name is Andaros :D I bring this up cause she grew up on Tatooine with her mother. Her father had to leave for Jedi business when she was four, and he wanted to take her with him cause she was Force Sensitive but her mother didn't like that kind of life. She thought it was too dangerous and wanted both him and her daughter to just live like normal people. So unfortunately he wasn't able to take her. Current story point right now is that she's looking for him. Also she's apprenticed under a Tythtonian Knight :D

The comic seems to rely on the same version of A New Hope's script that eventually became the novelisation. I read that book many years ago and watching Lewis' video, I recognized several lines of narration in this comic, for example the simile about the Death Star becoming a giant tombstone.

I find it interesting how the movie made Vader a pilot during the trench run. Lucas could have easily had him on the base with Tarkin or move out, but I think even before he made the Anakin/Vader connection there was always meant to be a part of Vader that mirrored aspects of Luke's character.

About the "immortal gods of the Sith" line, I remember reading that there was a Sith god named Typhojem. He's mentioned in "Book of Sith: Secrets from the Dark Side" as a thing the Sith used to worship, but it's never clarified as to whether he's real or not since he never appears in a story. They don't mention any other Sith gods, immortal or otherwise.
To expand, Typhojem was a god worshiped by the Sith-species, before the arrival of the exiled Dark Jedi, on Korriban. I have something to say about the stormtrooper attack on the Jawas, the Statement actually makes sense. When Obi-wan says "Look at these blast points.", he is referring to scorch marks on the vehicle. Since Blaster Bolt don't go through people, the marks are from all the shots the Troopers missed the Jawas with.
Grappling hook is not standard equipment for a Stormtrooper stationed on a space station, it is standard equipment for all Stormtroopers. So if you have the standard Stormtrooper kit, you have to have the grappling hook and be happy about it.
My heart goes out to the artist for this comic, who retroactively ended up drawing several incest kisses. Gotta wonder how they feel about it after the fact

Additionally when the comic series continued after this adaptation they really played up the love triangle between Luke, Leia, and Han for a while. I think they were probably told to knock it off eventually because if memory serves correct they stopped a while before Empire came out.

49:35 - That's one of my pet peeves with A New Hope too, we see Luke training with the lightsaber and obviously set up a duel between Luke and Vader, but it never happens. But on the flipside, there's not really any way you could organically fit a duel into the plot. It's weird.
It also would have been kind of ridiculous that Luke, having had less than a day of training, would be able to go up against Vader for more than a couple of seconds.

While not X-wings, they probably have a similar interface so it’s not out of hand that he could adapt that skill and apply it elsewhere. This was one of your funniest reviews in a while. I laughed my ass off at the "Disney+ series" gag. Also, in retrospect, why DIDN'T Vader sense Han sneaking up on him in the Falcon? Was ghost Obi-Wan doing that too? Because that would actually make a lot of sense, and lend credence to him becoming more powerful in death.
He was laser-focused on taking down Luke, to the point of tunnel vision. Remember, he said that he sensed that the Force was strong in him. He wanted to take him down at all cost, was just about to finish him off and neglected to 'listen' to his surroundings since he was so caught up in the hunt. That lines up with what happens later, too. Vader was absolutely obsessed with hunting down Luke after the Battle of Yavin, even before he learned that Luke was his son, to the point where he chased after him even when it meant giving up chances to seriously harm or even destroy the Rebellion.
They didn't have a plan yet to deal with the Death Star. They needed to safely deliver the technical readouts so they could figure it out and there was no way to know if there actually WAS anything that could be considered a weak spot.

I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars (aka "Episode IVa: May the Ferb Be with You"). Surprisingly, Uncle Owen looking pissed about Luke mentioning Ben Kenobi seems more in-line with how Owen told Obi-Wan to stay away in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Maybe the writers for the Obi-Wan series were reading this when writing the series.
And at least one comic where Ben attempted to get Owen to let him train Luke. A scene which actually made me feel a lot of sympathy for Owen and his wife.
It's IMPORTANT to note: Back in the 70's the promotional material like this comic, the color folio book etc all mentioned Vader was a "Dark lord of the SITH" but we had no idea exactly what a "sith" was for like a decade. Seriously, Lucas forgot to fill in that detail to the public. Even by the end of Jedi the word "sith" was never ONCE spoken on screen. Also: We legit thought a full body strike from a lightsaber must disintegrate you. Kenobi was the only person to take a full body shot.
Interestingly, when the Thrawn Trilogy came out, the Author Timothy Zhan wanted to name the Noghri - the Alien Assassins fanatically loyal to Vader - Sith precisely to answer why Vader was called a 'Lord of the Sith'. But Lucas shot that idea down. Zhan said a while ago that, in hindsight, he's glad Lucas did that, even though he was disappointed at the time.
A fine review, nice start to the year and I'm always glad to see older comics on this show honestly. So really, great job Linkara. It's important to see how Star Wars evolved over the decades in all forms of media, I think it does us well to recognize how strange and wonderful this weird little kid's story about space wizards really is.
I would love to see Linkara review the Phineas and Ferb Star Wars Episode 4A, May The Ferb Be With You. I want to see him make jokes about the jokes that are in this crossover. It's even better than the Marvel crossover and was my first introduction to Star Wars. Make it happen, Linkara!

A fan noticed that some of the TIE Fighters in the background of ROTJ didn't look right, and ended up tracking down behind-the-scenes information on the models used for that scene, and explained that, to save time and money, the filmmakers had gone out and basically bought off-the-rack toys of TIE Fighters to use in some scenes, doing slight modifications to them to look closer to the models and only using them for distant shots so you can't tell they're toys. The major distinguishing feature is that the toys had a compartment on the back for batteries which the normal models didn't, and their solar panels were a different shape. The creator acknowledged that the ILM team just intended them to be standard TIE Fighters in the film, but they are clearly a new variant because of that back compartment and different solar panels, so they whipped up some headcanon about what these TIE variants were, why they sported these design differences, and what their role was in the Imperial navy. Like...dude, they're just TIE Fighters that look a little different. Are ship designs SO static in the Star Wars universe that every single one must look exactly the same?
The comic presenting the stormtroopers as being cornered and being forced to fight is actaully more accurate to the movie, the thing where they have hundreds of reinforcements is a special edition quirk.
In the 2006 video game “Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy” you play through a recreation of the Original Trilogy with each movie getting six levels dedicated to them. I bring this up because this comic’s format is near identical to how the game handled A New Hope Chapter 1: The Boarding of the Tanative IV and Leia sending the droids to Tatooine Chapter 2: Luke searching for the droids and meeting up with Ben Kenobi learning about the Jedi Chapter 3: Meeting Han and Chewbacca in the Cantina then escaping Tatooine on the Falcon Chapter 4: Disguising as Stormtroopers to rescue Leia Chapter 5: Escaping the Death Star and Kenobi’s death Chapter 6: The Battle of Yavin Makes me wonder if Traveler’s Tale took inspiration from the comic adaptations to structure their game

As a Star Wars fan from childhood in walking distance from a library, I read this book so many times growing up and it is wild seeing it get a review. Also love the shout-out to Tarkin and TK-421
The hysterical thing about that "Rebels have won their first victory against the Galactic Empire" part of the crawl is the game Star Wars Rebel Assault is edited to imply that "victory" was just shooting down a few TIE Fighters. So it plays like the rebels are ecstatic that they shot down two planes and went home.
Fun fact about the comic calling Darth Vader the "Dark Lord of the Sith" even though the term is never spoken in the trilogy. As we saw from looking at The Star Wars, there were a ton of rewrites about what a Sith is. In official statements, Darth Vader was referred to as a Sith Lord, but there was next to nothing about what that meant. Similar deal, it was explained in supplemental materials what the name of Luke's father was (we even saw some pre-Empire Strikes Back comics featuring flashbacks with him and Darth Vader depicted as two different people). Since the term Sith didn't get much use before the prequels, evil users of the Force were frequently called "Dark Jedi," including Vader and the Emperor.

My Star Wars character's last name is Andaros :D I bring this up cause she grew up on Tatooine with her mother. Her father had to leave for Jedi business when she was four, and he wanted to take her with him cause she was Force Sensitive but her mother didn't like that kind of life. She thought it was too dangerous and wanted both him and her daughter to just live like normal people. So unfortunately he wasn't able to take her.
Current story point right now is that she's looking for him.

I read that book many years ago and watching Lewis' video, I recognized several lines of narration in this comic, for example the simile about the Death Star becoming a giant tombstone.

I find it interesting how the movie made Vader a pilot during the trench run. Lucas could have easily had him on the base with Tarkin or move out, but I think even before he made the Anakin/Vader connection there was always meant to be a part of Vader that mirrored aspects of Luke's character.

About the "immortal gods of the Sith" line, I remember reading that there was a Sith god named Typhojem. He's mentioned in "Book of Sith: Secrets from the Dark Side" as a thing the Sith used to worship, but it's never clarified as to whether he's real or not since he never appears in a story. They don't mention any other Sith gods, immortal or otherwise.
To expand, Typhojem was a god worshiped by the Sith-species, before the arrival of the exiled Dark Jedi, on Korriban. After the Dark Jedi arrived and took over, the Sith-species' priest cast, Kissai, awed by the power and skill they had in the Dark Side of the Force, declared the leader of the Dark Jedi, Ajunta Pall, as the physical manifestation of Typhojem.
Considering Vader met and killed the immortal god of the dark side, somehow I doubt he would worship any so called god.

According to the (excellent) novel Kenobi he would occasionally represent Jabba on official business and on those occasions be referred to as Jabba, since he was acting with his full authority.

I have something to say about the stormtrooper attack on the Jawas, the Statement actually makes sense. When Obi-wan says "Look at these blast points.", he is referring to scorch marks on the vehicle. Since Blaster Bolt don't go through people, the marks are from all the shots the Troopers missed the Jawas with.

Grappling hook is not standard equipment for a Stormtrooper stationed on a space station, it is standard equipment for all Stormtroopers. So if you have the standard Stormtrooper kit, you have to have the grappling hook and be happy about it.
Seeing early Star Wars is always a fun treat, it's always dated goofyness , dated madness or dated both.
My heart goes out to the artist for this comic, who retroactively ended up drawing several incest kisses. Gotta wonder how they feel about it after the fact

Additionally when the comic series continued after this adaptation they really played up the love triangle between Luke, Leia, and Han for a while. I think they were probably told to knock it off eventually because if memory serves correct they stopped a while before Empire came out.
It doesn't really peak until we get the rabbit. Jax and company were the best thing to come out the first Marvel run. :)

It also would have been kind of ridiculous that Luke, having had less than a day of training, would be able to go up against Vader for more than a couple of seconds.

While not X-wings, they probably have a similar interface so it’s not out of hand that he could adapt that skill and apply it elsewhere. The same thing happens with Anakin flying pod racers and later piloting Naboo star fighters in episode 1.
It makes sense Alec Guiness's the only actor with a nice portrait... as he, and Peter Cushion, were the only famous actors to star on the film.

This was one of your funniest reviews in a while. I laughed my ass off at the "Disney+ series" gag.
Also, in retrospect, why DIDN'T Vader sense Han sneaking up on him in the Falcon? Was ghost Obi-Wan doing that too? Because that would actually make a lot of sense, and lend credence to him becoming more powerful in death.
He was laser-focused on taking down Luke, to the point of tunnel vision. Remember, he said that he sensed that the Force was strong in him. He wanted to take him down at all cost, was just about to finish him off and neglected to 'listen' to his surroundings since he was so caught up in the hunt.
That lines up with what happens later, too. Vader was absolutely obsessed with hunting down Luke after the Battle of Yavin, even before he learned that Luke was his son, to the point where he chased after him even when it meant giving up chances to seriously harm or even destroy the Rebellion.

They didn't have a plan yet to deal with the Death Star. They needed to safely deliver the technical readouts so they could figure it out and there was no way to know if there actually WAS anything that could be considered a weak spot.

I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars (aka "Episode IVa: May the Ferb Be with You"). It's essentially the Star Wars equivalent of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and I love it for that. It might just be the best thing to come out of the Disney era of Star Wars.

Surprisingly, Uncle Owen looking pissed about Luke mentioning Ben Kenobi seems more in-line with how Owen told Obi-Wan to stay away in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Maybe the writers for the Obi-Wan series were reading this when writing the series.
And at least one comic where Ben attempted to get Owen to let him train Luke. A scene which actually made me feel a lot of sympathy for Owen and his wife.
It's IMPORTANT to note: Back in the 70's the promotional material like this comic, the color folio book etc all mentioned Vader was a "Dark lord of the SITH" but we had no idea exactly what a "sith" was for like a decade. Seriously, Lucas forgot to fill in that detail to the public. Even by the end of Jedi the word "sith" was never ONCE spoken on screen. Also: We legit thought a full body strike from a lightsaber must disintegrate you. Kenobi was the only person to take a full body shot.
Interestingly, when the Thrawn Trilogy came out, the Author Timothy Zhan wanted to name the Noghri - the Alien Assassins fanatically loyal to Vader - Sith precisely to answer why Vader was called a 'Lord of the Sith'. But Lucas shot that idea down.
Zhan said a while ago that, in hindsight, he's glad Lucas did that, even though he was disappointed at the time.
Hiding Luke on Tataiween was a genius idea. Vader hated Sand why would he deliberately visit a desert planet.

A fine review, nice start to the year and I'm always glad to see older comics on this show honestly. So really, great job Linkara. It's important to see how Star Wars evolved over the decades in all forms of media, I think it does us well to recognize how strange and wonderful this weird little kid's story about space wizards really is.

A fan noticed that some of the TIE Fighters in the background of ROTJ didn't look right, and ended up tracking down behind-the-scenes information on the models used for that scene, and explained that, to save time and money, the filmmakers had gone out and basically bought off-the-rack toys of TIE Fighters to use in some scenes, doing slight modifications to them to look closer to the models and only using them for distant shots so you can't tell they're toys. The major distinguishing feature is that the toys had a compartment on the back for batteries which the normal models didn't, and their solar panels were a different shape. The creator acknowledged that the ILM team just intended them to be standard TIE Fighters in the film, but they are clearly a new variant because of that back compartment and different solar panels, so they whipped up some headcanon about what these TIE variants were, why they sported these design differences, and what their role was in the Imperial navy.

The comic presenting the stormtroopers as being cornered and being forced to fight is actaully more accurate to the movie, the thing where they have hundreds of reinforcements is a special edition quirk.
In the 2006 video game “Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy” you play through a recreation of the Original Trilogy with each movie getting six levels dedicated to them. I bring this up because this comic’s format is near identical to how the game handled A New Hope

Chapter 5: Escaping the Death Star and Kenobi’s death
Chapter 6: The Battle of Yavin
Makes me wonder if Traveler’s Tale took inspiration from the comic adaptations to structure their game
32:03 The answer in the expanded universe was supposed to be a front man for Jabba. His real name was Mosep Binneed and he was Jabba's accountant. With the minor difference in spelling 'Jabba The Hut' for his alias. He died along with most of Jabba's entourage with the destruction of Jabba's barge.
He was quoted as "I also travel under Jabba's name from time to time, representing his interests. It doesn't hurt to confuse the competition. So yes, for today's purposes − with our master's kind permission − you can say that I am Jabba."
As a Star Wars fan from childhood in walking distance from a library, I read this book so many times growing up and it is wild seeing it get a review. Also love the shout-out to Tarkin and TK-421

The hysterical thing about that "Rebels have won their first victory against the Galactic Empire" part of the crawl is the game Star Wars Rebel Assault is edited to imply that "victory" was just shooting down a few TIE Fighters. So it plays like the rebels are ecstatic that they shot down two planes and went home.
I mean it’s a small victory but a victory nonetheless

Fun fact about the comic calling Darth Vader the "Dark Lord of the Sith" even though the term is never spoken in the trilogy.
As we saw from looking at The Star Wars, there were a ton of rewrites about what a Sith is. In official statements, Darth Vader was referred to as a Sith Lord, but there was next to nothing about what that meant. Similar deal, it was explained in supplemental materials what the name of Luke's father was (we even saw some pre-Empire Strikes Back comics featuring flashbacks with him and Darth Vader depicted as two different people).
Since the term Sith didn't get much use before the prequels, evil users of the Force were frequently called "Dark Jedi," including Vader and the Emperor.
There is a deleted scene where General Tagge refers to Vader as the Sith Lord sent by the Emperor.
