    Point of note, my understanding is that of all people Carrie Fisher apparently did a bunch of dialog rewrites for this movie more or less on set, punching the dialog up and making it a lot better. She was entirely uncredited for it, seemingly she was okay with that.
    This may explain why a lot of the dialog is different, what we see here might be closer to the original text. Turns out George Lucas was always pretty bad at writing dialog, he just had someone who wasn't nearby to cover for him in this case. Also Carrie was not one to mince words and almost certainly more than willing to walk up to George and say "Shut up and get me a pen." *Writes furiously* "We're saying THAT now!"

    When i was a kid, I watched the original version. And because of a combination of how I heard a particular line and I guess the voice and effects... I thought Boba Fett was Darth Vader's son.

      Not quite the same thing, but this idea reminds me of an old fanzine article (post-Empire, but pre-Return) I once read on the Internet. The author theorized that "Boba" Fett was actually short for "Roberta," and was going to be revealed as Luke's mother. Which would certainly have added an… _interesting_ angle to the scene where Fett tells Vader "as you wish."
      I can't seem to find this article now, sadly, as I really wish I could share the full thing. That wasn't even the most out-there theory in it…

    If i had to come up with an alternate interpretation to the "he is our only hope" part it would be this:
    Obi-Wan's viewpoint is what you mentioned about regarding Luke's potential as a Jedi with the bloodline and powers, etc. he thinks that this will be what allows Luke to have the strength and skill needed to destroy Vader and Palpatine...
    BUT, the true meaning of Luke being the last Hope is that he is the last hope for Anakin to redeem himself.
    Ashoka tried to reach Anakin and failed, Obi-Wan twice reached out and failed, Luke IS the last hope because him and by extension Leia are the last connection he has to Padme, it's Anakin's love for her and for his children that broke the dark side and Palpatine's hold over him and allowed for him to atone for his atrocities by sacrificing himself to kill Palpatine and free the galaxy of the evil he helped bring into.
    and this is why Luke is special and why it's, imo, okay for other jedi to exist, because none of them, not Ashoka, not Ezra, not Grogu, or whoever has the connection with Anakin the way Luke does.
    Love is what redeemed Vader and it was Luke's unyielding belief that his father could be turned that helped remind Anakin of how, a long time ago, the woman he loved held that same unyielding love for him only this time Anakin made the right choice and in doing so saved the galaxy rather than dooming it.

    • @the-aspiring-creator4249
      @the-aspiring-creator4249 4 місяці тому +6

      I've seen this interpretation before and in general? Let me say it's a beautiful one that plays into the themes of Star Wars and provides this real meaningful connection that properly reconciles the inclusion of EU elements.
      That being said. It is shot in the foot by one thing. Return of the Jedi's whole existence. In that film, Obi-Wan and Yoda make it explicitly clear the idea for Luke is to kill Vader and that by him being the last hope? They mean he's the last hope to restore balance by ending Vader and the Emperor and restoring peace to the galaxy and with the existence of more Jedi? There's the question of why in the hell if they're in such deep poodoo they're not going out of their way to contact other Jedi? I mean according to the show Obi-Wan Kenobi, even Kenobi's aware of a whole network of Jedi who survived after the war, if anything this is the time to start maybe calling for favors.

    0:14 actually Star Wars’ first outing would be the novelization of A New Hope by Alan Dean Foster.
    A New Hope was meant to release in November of 1976 but production issues delayed the film by six months, however the novelization released on time. My father for years thought Star Wars was based on a book because of that release discrepancy
    The first edition of the novelization also contains some interesting discrepancies compared to later developments. For example it describes The Emperor as a feeble powerless old man who is used as a puppet by Vader and other high ranking officials. A far cry from the Palpatine we know today

    I think Linkara's missing something about Luke being "the only hope." Luke isn't important because he's powerful, or because he can do amazing things other Jedi can't. They tried relying on being a great warrior with Anakin, and it only made things worse. In Return of the Jedi, Luke *doesn't* defeat Palpatine by being stronger than him. He doesn't defeat Palpatine at all, Vader does. Because what Luke has, what Obi-Wan and Cal Kestis and Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger and Quinlan Vos and even Ahsoka Tano don't have... is that he Anakin and Padme's _son._ So, for Vader, seeing the last remnant of the love he had for Padme suffering at the hands of the Empire is what it takes to turn him against Palpatine once and for all. Love, conquering hate.
    Luke was never special because he was a Jedi. Anyone can be a Jedi. Luke was special because he was the son of a man who needed to be offered a path back to the light by someone he couldn't help but love unconditionally.

    • @AT4W

      Well to be fair, considering Revenge of the sith & the Kenobi show, Obi-Wan tried TWICE and failed to reach Anakin. So I always interpreted it as Ghost Kenobi being like: "Hey, don't solely rely on reaching him. Since he has been a sith lord for years, so if push comes to shove, kill him if worse comes to worse." This was especially shown with his line: "he's more machine now than man, twisted & evil!" So Kenobi probably sees killing him as a mercy type of kill. Which is true if you know how much pain, Anakin/Vader is in with the suit. Always in a state of pain, thus giving him anger, thus always powered in the dark side of the force

    An additional note on the "I know" line from Han, dunno if you know about this or not but since you didn't mention it - the original scripted line (by Lucas, of course) was indeed Han replying "I love you too", but the director and Harrison Ford both agreed it didn't sound right for Han to say such a sappy line, so they did multiple takes with the director encouraging him to ab-lib something. The set was hot, uncomfortable, and the shoot was going long, so a frustrated Ford said the next one would be the last one he did, and that was the "I know" line. During editing George Lucas was upset they wanted to go with that line, but the director and Ford fought for it and it got a massively positive response from test audiences.
    And in typing this out I'm reminded of what I've said to friends in the past - the more I hear about the original trilogy, sometimes I feel like Star Wars was a success *in spite* of George Lucas' involvement, not because of it.

      George Lucas is actually a very good director and writer in general. He just sucks at dialog. The problems arise when he's not questioned and either doesn't willingly let someone else take over in spots he isn't at his best, or just never is told it's not great.

      My opinion is that Star Wars needed Lucas to be what it was. But the original trilogy are as good as they are because they also had people around who could and would tell him when an idea was stupid or a line didn't work or a scene needed tweaking. Most of the problems of the prequels come from getting almost unfiltered Lucas, which is sometimes gold and sometimes very much not. Meanwhile the absence of his approach to the series is very noticeable in the Disney stuff. There's still good stuff in there but it doesn't feel the same. It doesn't quite have the magic.

The addition of Palpatine telling Vader Luke is the son of Anakin Skywalker, and the implication that Vader didn't know that breaks the movie. He tricked him into thinking he's a civilian instead of the person Luke was meant to find after all. So maybe he was forcing Luke to run laps and swing a lightsaber to 'fulfill' Luke's wishes by putting him into the sort of training he had expected. Just another example of Yoda subverting Luke's expectations.
    After all, why do the exercises with Yoda on his back, whose only real purpose would be to build muscle, then tell him later that it's the force that matters "not this crude flesh"?

    I know where you're coming from with Yoda and the lightsaber training...but Yoda knows Luke will one day have to fight Vader. The "that boy is our last hope" line makes it clear that Yoda and Obi-Wan want this confrontation to happen. Any Force abilities Luke learns, Vader could counter with his own Force powers. A fight with Vader will inevitably end with a lightsaber duel. If we ignore the prequels and look at this using only A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, we know Yoda trained Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan trained Vader. Yoda has been in contact with Obi-Wan, and the two are most likely training Luke to defend himself specifically against Vader's fighting style.

    I heard for why Lucas was uncertain about doing prequels/sequels to star wars was the hard work that went into making the original trilogy. He was likely suffering burn out near the end and just didn't feel like doing a sequel then and there come return of the Jedi.
    This is probably why he chose Luke's sister be Leia and not a new villainess. His thought was probably just finish the trilogy as much as he could and adding a new villainess and crafting an arc for her and sequel baiting was just too much work already in addition to aiding in the film's development. Making Luke's sister Leia was likely a means to make his job as writer on it easier.
    I heard this too was likely why the Prequels used CGI a lot becaise to Lucas, having CGI backgrounds meant not having to deal with local terrain and the hardships of filming in local terrain.

    I find it kinda funny that Luke never lets Vader or the Emperor know that he also got some training from Yoda. I just imagine that if he'd let it slip during their fight, Vader would've gone "oh... shit."

  • @tyrongkojy

    The Tauntaun dying DOES make sense, evolutionarily. Colder at night, even that creature would need to seek shelter. We have this in deserts and colder regions all the time, where a creature otherwise adapted to said cold can still succumb. It's a reason Emperor Penguins huddle together during snow storms. Evolved for the environment, CAN still freeze to death in the right circumstances.

    • @Greil9
      @Greil9 4 місяці тому

      His point was more that the tauntaun died before Luke and Han did, seeing as the humans aren't evolved for those climates.
      Though maybe that was just some really, REALLY good cold weather gear. Potentially with sci-fi tech.

    • @tyrongkojy
      @tyrongkojy 4 місяці тому

      Good gear was my assumption. Especially if the creature was in no way evolved for those extreme temperatures. We're actually rather unique on Earth for our durability and ability to survive and recover from injury or extremes. Most other creatures cannot handle, naked, what we can for as long as we can. No reason to believe the alien is any different. Granted I doubt that was in consideration when writing the scene, but it DOES make sense.@@Greil9

    I was eagerly looking forward to this for a while, in fact last night I found myself predicting that it would be uploaded when I woke up this morning and I was right ;)
    The thing I appreciate about this film is Yoda, especially given his later depictions (or at least his reputation) which exaggerates his speech patterns and other quirks at the expense of his original characterisation as a genuinely wise and serious master who was simply testing Luke at the start, with some genuinely powerful moments demonstrating the toll that the fall of the Jedi and his exile has had on him, particularly the 'Wars not make one great' line.
    I can probably give the film the benefit of the doubt that Luke being more of the 'hope' than all the other Jedi can still be put down to his personal connection to Vader as Anakin's son (which I think was the key thing in the end), not that he had inherited Anakin's power. As my only experience of the new canon is the first two sequel films (in fact aside from a handful of legends novels years back I'm only really familiar with the trilogies) I still have the legend canon explanation in my head for why Yoda couldn't leave as the 'dark side tree' helping shield Yoda from detection, though I doubt there has been any such explanation in the revised continuity.
    One more minor thing that's amusing is the 'no disintegrations' bit, given the contrasting expanded media interpretations of that. I still have the Star Wars Visual Dictionary from when I was little (which for one thing was where I was learned the Emperor's name was Palpatine, therefore knowing where things were going with him in the Prequels) which Boba Fett's entry described him as having a reputation for doing that, not that it's canon as other bits in there (like how Darth Vader rose through the ranks) have clearly been overwritten by later media. Then there was something I might have read on tvtropes that something else the opposite way with Boba Fett basically moaning 'I do that one time and he keeps bringing it up!"
    From the film specifically (as it didn't look like it was in the comic), the mention of a cloaking device was always odd to me. Naturally they did something with that in the 'Legends' media (with a more realistic depiction of such technology as being double blind) but to the best of my knowledge I don't think that such technology has even been brought up in the current canon of the franchise. That just makes it seem like a random and typically sci-fi thing that Lucas thought he needed to put in without anything more being done to show or even acknowledge that it exists in this universe.

      @AT4W  4 місяці тому +1

      They DID bring up cloaking devices in Last Jedi, specifically a "cloaking field" that was shielding the escaping transport ships, but the First Order were able to pierce once they knew what to look for.

    I had these and other Star Wars comics as a kid. I boxed them away when my parents said I out grew them and they got tucked in the back of the house behind and under things. I long considered giving them to you , but by the time I found them , not only had you already reviewed a few of them , they had also crumbled over time and disintegrated in to dust upon picking them back up.
    Other long lost collectables were also found, and in better condition but didn't sell for any place near what legends say they sell for.

    Interestingly enough, my significant other and I have a different, more positive interpretation on the somewhat infamous "I know" from Han.
    We both always read that line as "you don't have to tell me, because your actions/behavior already show me that you do".
    ...
    Granted, Leia and Han are always kinda bickering, but we have adapted the habit of responding with "I know", whenever one of us gets the urge to tell the other.

    Looking back on this as an adult, I think having a near villain victory like this was a good choice. Incompetent villains continually failing means there's no stakes, no challenge to overcome. By having the heroes make mistakes and fail to stop the bad guys, it makes the victories, both small here (Luke being rescued, Lando joining the group), and the events of the next movie, feel earned.
    It's a wake up call for Luke that he can't be brash and headstrong all the time, and as you noted, shows how his strengths are also his weaknesses.
    Also I agree 100% that applying the Divine Right of Kinds philosophy to the Jedi is stupid and never should have happened. I really prefer Rey as some nobody from nowhere. I really wish they hadn't walked back The Last Jedi's shake ups.

    We have seen a weapon disintegrated something in Star Wars, in the second episode of the first season of the Mandalorian. Mando vaporized a Jawa with his long rifle during the scene when he finds them dismantling his ship

    39:45 Mando's rifle could, but it looked like he needed some kind of special cartridge to do it. Also in the movie Vader pointed directly at Boba, so he probably did at some point

    Linkara I get not being a fan of the chosen one stuff or the bloodline but even befire Midichlorians power levels existed. As Obi-Wan and Yoda stated the force flows through EVERY creature. But the fact Vader was able to “hunt the Jedi to near extinction” means there had to be some requirement beyond ideology to be one

    33:37 - Personally I don't have a problem with so many Jedi surviving as statistically Order 66 could have been a success even with so many Jedi surviving in canon and also Obi-Wan is under the impression that Luke is the Chosen One (Yoda reveals later on their is another meaning he suspects it is Leia which was Lucas' original intent for the Sequel Trilogy with her becoming Supreme Chancellor) as he came to the conclusion Anakin wasn't due to his fall & becoming Darth Vader (he was ultimately wrong as Luke realized his father could be redeemed & that the light of Anakin still existed in Darth Vader, and Luke's refusal to kill him saw him embrace the true path of a Jedi, with him reminding Anakin of the Jedi he once was with his line like my father before me)! Basically Obi-Wan while at one with the Force is still blinded to the truth as Yoda is as they are both preparing Luke to kill Vader! Anakin is the chosen one as he aided Palpatine in destroying the Jedi who no longer truly served the will of the Force and eventually Palpatine himself as Palpatine was the embodiment of the Dark Side! By choosing to die, Anakin brought balance by putting the Light & Dark sides back at square one (the sequel trilogy doesn't contradict this as it takes place long after the battle of Endor and was likely do to Palpatine cheating death as well as his manipulation of Ben Solo via Snoke & eventually in person before he returned to the light)! You have to remember Obi-Wan & Yoda aren't any more perfect than Luke is and there are plenty of examples in LEGENDs & Canon of the Jedi doing questionable things (from the Republic's war crimes such as faking surrender to the CIS which in the real world is classified as a war crime by the Geneva convention, to their practice of taking children from their parents)! While Star Wars is often viewed as a classic struggle of Good vs Evil, it isn't all black and white! Having Obi-Wan shift his view of Anakin being the Chosen One to Luke makes sense based upon his character & Yoda considering the possibility it could be Leia works to as Yoda realized his failures during his fight with the Emperor in Revenge of the Sith!

    A little movie trivia: apparently the only actor on set who knew the line "I am your father" was Mark Hamill. The original script, which everyone else got said "Obi-Wan killed your father", and the other line was added in post. Apparently, being left in the dark with that detail angered David Prowse (the on set actor for Vader), because he thought his body language would be completely different he had known.
