- Join Coach Tara as she explains the importance of eye dominance when shooting archery and how it affects where your arrows land on (or maybe even off) the target. She will show you how to find your eye dominance and explain which type of archer you are.

Thank you so much for this video. I am number 4. And i learned with both eyes open, to shoot instinctively. But im not consistent. Now i know to close my right eye while shooting. I know it may take a bit of time to learn, but thats ok. God bless.
Hi Tara I've just started archery and I'm right handed but left eye dominant so ive put a patch over my dominant eye to strengthen my non dominant eye . Thanks for the video.
Great tip! I did the same for my first year of shooting!
Great tips. Love everything you're doing here. The split finger vs three under post changed everything for me. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words!
I started archery around 6 months ago. I'm left-handed but right eye dominant. I tried both sides before I bought my bow, and I decided to shoot right-handed. It wasn't that difficult to switch hands for me. Because the world is basically set up for right-handers, I've learned to do a lot of things right-handed: batting, golfing, playing guitar, etc. About the only thing I can't do right-handed is write.
A lot of people really do like shooting off their eye dominance once they get used to it! Thanks for sharing! Good luck in your archery journey!
I do archery with both left and right-handed sides. For golf i have s left snd rfmight set 😂
The world may be for mostly right handed people, but that won't stop people like me having their own custom left handed gear
Plus, anyone can learn to be ambidextrous
I'm in that rare left-handed and right eye dominant. My wife is the opposite. I've bought a right-handed bow recurve bow and have been practicing with it, but I'll also pick up my wife's left-handed compound bow and will shoot with it as well, just to practice.
You are in that rare category! I like to shoot both sides, as well! Will make it easy to show up anywhere and shoot whatever bow is available! LOL
Used to be left-handed left eye dominate. But my eyes have gotten worse over the years. Now I have had to relearn shooting Archery as right eye dominate. So I shoot right handed now.
That explains why I’m able to get away with both eyes open. I was just saying to someone else that the other reason I do that (as a right handed shooter) is that I struggle to close the left without closing them both. I’ve kind of wanted to learn left handed shooting anyway tbh, but I’ve been busy learning and fine tuning other skills (like shooting thumb draw variations, different anchor points for different distances, different arrows, different bows etc etc).
Same here, my body strength is used to right handed shooting too, but Il get to it one day though
I like trying things differently, my left eye is better with the near-sighted targets & my right eye is better with the far. My right arm has the strength & my left arm has the speed. So, depends on what I am doing I bring out to long bow for the far target, the recurve bow for the near target & the horse bow for being on the horses. It's hard to judge which is my 'eye dominance' because each situation is different...
Hi. I’m also right hand left eye dominant but shoot both eyes open. Took a while to learn but if you figure out which ghost image to aim with it is doable. Helps with situational awareness and gauging distance especially when hunting.
They say you can do it! And it sounds like you are proof! I just never learned (or should I say, took the time to teach myself) Thanks for sharing! Will give others hope! LOL
@@ArcheryHouse Thanks for all your tips. I am trying to teach my 6 year old but since I had to figure stuff out on my own I don’t always know how to explain it to him and your videos helps a ton. Archery is not as big in South Africa as in the US so we don’t have a lot of teachers here.
my eyes and hand are both left handed for shooting guns and bows
Shoot I’m rhanded but left eye dominant , probably why I had a harder time in basketball
I close my L eye and I shoot R handed. When I was finally advised there was nothing wrong with doing this I was set free! No more shooting with both eyes open.
Can you be ambidextrous in archery?
Great Video, years ago before i knew anything about archery me and my right handed buddy with a right hand bow walked into a pro shop and the guy tested our eye dominance . He was severely left eye dominant so he bought a left hand bow and his groups went from 12"@30 yards to stacking arrows with occasional " robin hoods"@30 yards. Follow your eye dominance especially if you are just beginning archery.
Again... You are so beautiful.
Im left handed and right eye dominant. I would like to get a left handed bow but would sacrafice the comfort for better accuracy. Thanks for the informational video.
The left bow can still be great! It's going to come down to personal preference. I would recommend shooting both (if you have that option) and seeing which works best for you! A lot of people will opt for their hand-dominance...so it's definitely an option to keep your comfort! LOL It's just nice to know your eye dominance so you can understand why arrows might shoot off to one side or the other! Good luck!
I got a question ? For a beginner archer. A person that is right handed always has been, but when i swing a baseball bat its done right handed, when i throw a ball or anything it's done right handed, i notice this sounds silly but when i played basketball growing up i did better left handed. Most everything is right handed but some things not many i do better left handed, how i would know to get a bow set up for what handed ? Archery bows can be expensive, i want to get into it so bad and want to buy and get into it have big big interest in it, what would you recommend for me to do before purchasing my first bow to tell if i would better to get right or left hand set up archery bow ?
My first suggestion would be to find the nearest shop and see if you can try out both! Even better - take a beginner class where you can try both sides. If that isn't an option - I would recommend starting with your hand dominance - so go right hand and just close your left eye, if needed.
I took a few beginner lessons and was able to try out both sides. I'm left-handed but shoot right-handed because I'm right eye dominant.
