    The reason he slices so much is the same reason why Tsitsipas slices so little: the quality of the slice

      come on now guys... everyone who has a one handed backhand slices a lot at all levels. The one handed backhand just isn't as easy to setup as the 2 handed one. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but that is clearly the elephant in the room on why he slices so much. Dimitrov, as a top 10 player in the world, compensated for this having a great slice.

    • @gabrielametodieva8360

      @@thiagobadin5331he’s said it himself recently when they asked him if he’d go for a OHBH if we were starting today. He said that it’s the most difficult shot there is, the setup, footwork, height, swing, everything. Very difficult to execute from any position. But he said that there’s no other feeling like doing it all right and hitting a good OHBH winner.

    • @gf0878
      @gf0878 8 місяців тому +4

      Grigor has said it before: in all kinds of shots, he learned how to play backhand slice first, so he likes it, and he is good at doing it, even can use it as a big weapon

    We're so very lucky to see Dimitrov's late renaissance. Such a nice guy who is so good for the sport, and who has struggled with fulfilling the 'Baby Fed" curse for so long during his 20s.

    As a huge Grigor fan from Bulgaria, it was great pleasure to watch such a video! Thank you for the excellent work - the flow of the video, all with the suitable selection of beautiful points and detailed statistics is impressive!
    It is a little hard for me to dream of seeing Dimitrov lift a Grand Slam trophy, I would be super happy even to see him get to a GS final. A few more 250 and 500 titles is more realistic to hope for at the moment, but also just having these deep runs at Master's events so frequently is something that I am not used to and it will be amazing if he can maintain his current level throughout 2024 and beyond. I think he can, as long as he doesn't have distractions outside of the court.

    I thought Miami was an amazing run, and am really looking forward to seeing him at Wimbie this year, I think he’ll make a very deep run on the grass and you can’t write him off at any phase of the tournament. You just never know. Would love to see him win but admit it’s a long shot!

    im a little late to watching this full video but what i wanted to say is grigor is one of the best players out there throughout his career. This resurgence of him is super super exciting and winning in brisbane this year is a good start to him finally pushing to win big big titles. his miami final was fun to watch, yes he was beaten pretty easily by sinner, but thats jannik sinner, hes number one in the world for a reason and he want the AO for a reason. I think the more grigor works on his whole game the more chance he has of pushing past top 10 players in slams and getting to where he needs to be

    I'm so happy he's finally finding the self-belief on the crucial points! ❤
    And - this is more of a running joke, but some would say that Grigor's exciting romantic life often took up his energy and interfered with his career. He seems a bit more focused on his tennis lately, so maybe that is one of the reasons behind his on-court resurgence over the last year and a half.

    We tend to forget that tennis is entertainment and while winning is super important, it is super important mostly for the players. For tennis consumers, watching exciting plays is a big part of what keeps us watching and playing the game. Who is going to watch Djokovic matches on youtube after he retires? They are not that exciting. Djokovic deserves tons of respect as a sports icon and as a human. I got that but as far as tennis is concerned, I will be looking at Dimitrov and Federer videos for many years to come. The beauty of their games just cannot be denied.
    The best thing with Dimitrov finding his game is that there will be more of it to watch. I love how his backhand has improved over the years, especially in consistency. And the slice is just probably the best slice of any player in the modern era, Federer included. It ads so much to his game and makes it so much more interesting. I hope Dimi gets a slam or two before he puts down the racket. He deserves that.

    Up until the end of 2023, I always get like Dimitrov’s ceiling and ability was something like that of Ivan Ljubicic. People remember Ljubicic as Federer’s coach but they forget he was a former world #3, he has a grand slam semifinal appearance, he won an ATP Master’s 1000 (where he beat Djokovic, Nadal and Andy Roddick) and unlike Ljubicic Dimitrov won the Nitto ATP WTF (where the top 8 players USUALLY play. That year Dimitrov got a draw of Thiem, Goffin, Pablo Carreno Busta, Jack Sock in the semis and Goffin again in the final. That’s like a 250 level field).
    This is Dimitrov’s chance though. The rest of ‘23, ‘24 and ‘25. With Novak being on a downswing, with Alcaraz and Sinner still not quite as good as they’ll eventually be, with Dimitrov having a favorable style to beat Medvedev and confidence from the recent win against Zverev, this is the best chance Dimitrov will ever have for immortality

      ATP Finals in 2017 his run was for sure like an ATP 500 or even a bit higher (not like a Masters 1000 but you get what I am saying) because Jack Sock, David Goffin and Dominic Thiem were playing very good.

    Lastly, the mental side of the big 3 hasn't been discussed at length enough. For those who know tennis and watch closely there's not a world of difference in physical talent between Federer and Dimitrov but mentally there's a real gap. Who believes in themselves the most in the biggest moments. Dimitrov has more talent than Andy Murray but Murray has been able to still win majors in the big 3 era.
    With Grigor it's the mental challenge that weighs the most heavily. He was given the physical gifts.

      I think at this stage, after reaching his two master finals and recently, he’ll give his all to reach this goal. Bo5 is a different beast though, I don’t know if he’s physically fit for that at this stage of his career. He’ll need a big helping hand in a draw. He’s been very unlucky with those unfortunately. Achieved great results last year but had to work hard for them. Other players like Ruud can reach a GS final not facing a top 10 player and he had to beat 3 of them for each masters final.

  • @twinwankel
    @twinwankel 8 місяців тому

    Last year's Wimby is the turning point for Dimi, IMO. In the round of 16, Dimi's backhand broke down so badly. It was a pitiful sight. And Rune mercilessly picked on it. I think that after the match, Dimi had to re-evaluate his game and whether he could compete at the highest level. Because when other players see your weakness exploited so badly, they are going to repeat the strategy. And to get destroyed by Fed was one thing but to get spanked by a young upstart was another. It was a watershed moment in his career. This is where he decided to fix his backhand and it has worked. And he has hit more down the line and angled winners since then while reducing his unforced errors. Of course, as you say, he and the rest of the tour will not beat Sinner. And this is the challenge for him and the ATP.

    I‘d like to see a video about Zverev. I‘m German, but that‘s not the only reason. He was close winning a Grand Slam, had Rafa on the edge in Paris and than had this horrible injury. I think, he might be an interesting player to analyze

    Did Federer slice that much? Maybe it's a thing of one-handed backhanders?

    A major and frankly pretty obvious factor missed regarding Dimitrov's slicing is a lack of confidence hitting over the ball. If he had a great drive he could really rely on like, say, peak Stan, well, he'd use it much, much more often. The same goes for running around to hit the drive forehand. If his slice was a positive shot this video makes out, he wouldn't be so desperate to run around the ball to hit the forehand. For me Dimitrov's slice is a clear sign of weakness. He does pretty well with it considering. But it's the worst element of his game by far.

      In some matches, he could get too defensive with the slice, I agree. But when used properly, he gets a lot of benefits from it.

      @@martinzahariev4420 Yeah, I just don't think so. As per the stats in this video, he's over 60% slice on his backhand. No other top player comes close and there's a reason for that. I love his game except for the slicing. His drive backhand looks like a nice shot, but he clearly isn't comfortable hitting it. He hits so many sloces when the ball is tee'ed up nicely for the drive backhand, missing an opportunity to get ahead in the point.

    The reason why he failed to live up to the expectations is that he wasted his peime years by not pitching in the effort, chasing the good life, and wasting his talent being sharapova toy boy
