    Thank you so much for all these wonderful videos! I'm just beginning and loving making mosaics. I got a wood table out of the trash and want to do a mosaic on the (round) table top . What do you recommend? Should I add something between the mosaic and the wood table since it's bigger than 24"?

      If the table is intended for interior use only and the table is sturdy you can mosaic on top of the wood. If wood is painted or varnished then sand that down a bit, get a nice "tooth" on the surface. If not a good surface then recommend you add a substrate and the easiest to work with would be a lightweight substrate like in this video ua-cam.com/video/IPRfPiXWvdc/v-deo.html. Sometimes I think the hardest part about making a mosaic table top is finding a good table base! So if you have something you like use it. Good luck!

    So I'm planning on mosaicing atop an old antique oak makeup vanity. I've already chalk painted it but I'm going to sand, score and seal. Would you recommend this?

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  Рік тому +1

      Yes sand, but not smooth, sand with rough paper to give the surface some “tooth”. Good luck!

    Hi Kim! What paint do you recommend using on the birch plywood frame? And, once painted, that is all I need to do - no need to score, etc? Thanks!

    • @kimwozniak5663
      @kimwozniak5663 Рік тому

      Hi Randy, If you are asking about the exposed area that frames the mosaic you can use any acrylic paint. If you wish to paint the area where the mosaic is attached I would use a primer like Kilz or Zinzer 123.

    If I want to use MDF for indoors, do you paint the sides/back before or after the seal the wood?

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  Рік тому +1

      Whoops, I just saw this! SOOOO sorry. I seal all at the same time, either 50/50 Weldbond and water, acrylic wash or a Kilz-type product. Just something to get rid of that porosity.

    I have a wood tray that was stained. How can I use it to make a tiled mosaic serving tray? Thank you!

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  2 роки тому +1

      I don't think the stain will interact with the adhesive negatively - extra protection maybe give the surface you want to mosaic a quick rough up with some sandpaper. Use WeldBond as adhesive.GOod luck and thanks for being a fan!

    What about gluing a fiberglass mesh on top of the wood? Is it helpful?

    I have had all kinds of trouble using wood as a substrate. I don't know what it is. Is it because the wood flexes too much or if it is not sealed and the thinset absorbs into the wood too much? I've had a number of pieces come off of exterior doors that were even painted prior to installing the mosaic.

    • @kimwozniak5663
      @kimwozniak5663 Рік тому +1

      As noted in the video wood is the least stable substrate. If it is outside or in an environment with changing humidity levels you will very likely have cracked grout and popping tiles. A door that is being used has to much movement to hold the tile . If you really want to adhere mosaics to a door you will need to use a more flexible adhesive such as Lexel. This will not prevent grout from cracking.

      If it is Plywood made in layers it can warp you are referring to, you can use it, but only indoors and I recommend a high grade cabinet ply that has been thoroughly sealed. Then rough up the surface that you will apply the mosaic to. Construction grade plywood is meant to be fastened to something, this keeps it from wrapping. Birch cabinet grade is a better quality. Cabinet plywood is more expensive and more stable. If you were referring to the MDF is is stable and can be used indoors.
