- In Japan, Catholics make up less than 1% of the population. Despite the small numbers, allegations of sexual abuse have surfaced against Catholic clergymen in recent years.
Mrs Harumi Suzuki is one of the first few in Japan to speak out against the sexual abuse she experienced when consulting with a priest at the church back in 1977. In September 2020, she filed an official lawsuit against the Sendai’s Catholic Church, seeking around $77,000 in damages, along with an official apology. She speaks to VICE World News about her experience and the impact the incident has had on her mental health.

I agree, and as a Catholic myself it breaks my heart to see these things happen all over the world. I would say in defense though, that events of abuse seem to be viewed much differently when it is caused by a Catholic priest than it is for something like a public school teacher for example. Even though children are many times more likely to be sexually or physically abused by school teachers than by Catholic priests, you don't see nearly the same outcry against public schooling as you see against Catholicism. People look at an instance of abuse by a teacher and blame it on the teacher, but see an instance of abuse by a priest and blame it on Catholicism. I'm not trying to defend priests who commit these types of heinous acts, I just feel saddened by the whole situation

The fact that the abuse was written off as consensual because she was already an adult when it happened is sickening-- there really needs to be like, an entire new branch of law enforcement for sexual abuse crimes perpetrated by religious organizations.
It was consensual because
1, she was an adult that could've said NO, she didn't.
2, She did not report it or even consider it an assault until decades after.
She's just a failure now looking for someone to blame for her inadequacies in life. I'm not saying the priest did not abuse his position of authority over her ( and probably her trust) but you don't know what was going on between the both of them before then (As she admitted that she felt abandoned because he didn't talk to her anymore after the incident).

Due to our mating strategy as humans, ( where men typically initiate and women receive/respond to their advances) you can only be sure that it wasn't consensual if the woman rejects the man's advances. If that's not the case ( of course this excludes instances of inebriation) then there was no harassment. If we just blindly believe all women, there would be numerous innocent men that would be unjustly persecuted. False accusations come in many forms. There are multiple instances of women making false accusations on innocent men out of spite or for multiple other reasons.
When in japan someone says: "it's a difficult situation" it's just a polite way to say " I have zero intention of helping."
Yup. In Japan, if someone is serious about hanging out, looking into your business idea, etc. they take moves to make it happen. If no details are discussed afterwards, it is a guaranteed not happening.

Everything that is wrong with so many professions distilled into one sentence. I don't get how none of them stop to realize they just make themselves look equally guilty instead of making the accused/their profession innocent.
I think any institution would collapse if it did not protect its own members, especially from allegations from 30 years ago that have no evidence. if our collective society deemed that kind of testimony legal and authoritative, it would be too simple to destroy anything and anyone.
Thank our economic system, not professions. You look bad, you lose your money.

If the church handles this internally, even with a “third party” which comprises of church appointed lawyers working with the church’s best interest in mind, how can one expect accountability?
It's the police method. "We've investigated ourselves and cleared us of any wrongdoing."
So it's like Human Resources exist to help protect the corporation? Not the employee?

You also clearly don’t understand the dynamics that lead the church to get away with these crimes for decades in countries across the entire globe… the insular nature of the church to prevent abuses from being reported is literally the issue around the global abuse scandal… do you live under a rock? That’s what they said about cardinal pell. The church held their investigation and found him innocent. The court found him guilty but it was proven he was innocent 404 days later

Of people that come forward with abuse only a slim number actually find justice due to the nature of the crime (power dynamics, time elapsed to come forward). I believe the victims-what did they gain by coming forward? And yes, the church always protects its priests. Can you name a single case where the church found its clergy guilty prior to a public investigation by authorities, held them accountable, and compensated the victim? No, because their interests are to protect the institution, not their parishioners-aka damage control. This is common sense. You can’t expect the guilty to earnestly evaluate themselves and hold themselves accountable.
So what he's suffering from dementia? He did what he did & he didn't face any legal consequences at all. I'm not going to see it as "but don't you think he's suffered enough?" As a survivor of abuse myself, the answer is no. It will always going to be no. The law is supposed to protect its citizens not protect the abusers. It's gross. He needs to face the consequences of his actions.

We all thought the same thing when we heard it involved the catholic church
Aside from the atrocities that have gone almost all but noticed in the Catholic Church community. it is inspiring hearing from an abuse victim from across the world, while the acts perpetrated were awful the loss of self and severe pain mentally really brought me to tears as it doesn’t matter what country you live in or what religion you practice. Abuse in any form will lead to at least mental health issues for years to come. I praise these women for speaking out and trying to seek peace as burying those feelings and memories will slowly destroy you.

It's scary how much abuse goes on in the Hasidic community but because of fear of anti-Semitism and their insular nature that things are never reported. There was a very good Law and Order SVU about it and the difficulty surrounding it. Be it a rabbi or a priest when you're given such unfettered access to vulnerable people and you wield such power and prominence in the community and people put their trust in you when they're vulnerable... It's a recipe for disaster
It is pretty good. The last quote definitely was profound. I definitely agree with the other woman that it is better to have few good priests instead of untrustworthy priests. The terrifying part about abuse relating to religious organizations is that these abusers are able to get away due to their status and power. Regardless of beliefs, we must agree that they should be held accountable and punished for their actions.

In Rwanda (where I am currently living), for example, many people have forgiven the radical Hutus for the Genocide of 1994. However, it is taught immensely in schools and everyone works hard to never happen again. Building the Genocide Memorial in Kigali (which I went to) is another example of that. I highly encourage for everyone visiting Rwanda to see the memorial.
Forgiving is not the same as forgetting. You personally forgive in order to not let that weight consume you, but you never forget what happens to you so that those responsible face justice, and so that everyone remembers to never allow it to happen again.

The catholic church has always moved priests to other locations to practice if abuse was uncovered.
Every church should have medically trained personnel to be able to use a rape test kit and be authorized to send to a proper lab. Saves time. Too much of this has been going on.

All I can say to Mrs Harumi Suzuki if she ever reads this, is that that man will receive the punishment due, even if you can't settle with the church for an apology, he is already being punished, for in this life he harmed you, and so I am convinced that God is allowing harm upon him in return.
You can do one of three things, 1.ask God to give him his due punishment, or 2. believe in faith that through his dementia he is already being punished as I do and last but not least, 3. you can start a revolt against this church on the basis of not giving you at the very least, an apology.
It is important, Madam Suzuki, that you forgive this man, the same way Jesus has forgiven you of your sins, he will get his due.
Think of this, would you like for that man to have the chance to enter heaven if he is apologetic? If not, why should Jesus/God allow you into heaven, after all the wrong you may have committed.
If he is not resentful, God will know, and I would wager with my limited knowledge, that he would not be welcomed if he did not have a resentful heart.
I highly doubt, any priest who does these things will get off lightly.
They will be tormented day in and day out, at least at some point in life, especially if they think they have any chance of making it to heaven.
Continue in Faith dear Suzuki, I urge you, reinstate your case with the will of Jesus at the forefront of your mind ask it of him first to the Father, and if Jesus the Son and the Father God almighty allow it, move with your case, and see where the Holy spirit leads you, maybe your purpose is to scourge this sect of Catholicism from Japan.
Maybe they ARE bad for your country, and if So, ask of it in the name of the Son, the Father and the Holy spirit, to lead you and guide and protect you *

It's disheartening when someone in a position of moral authority, like a priest, appears indifferent or unwilling to acknowledge past wrongs. Empathy and accountability are essential traits, especially for those guiding others spiritually and morally. When individuals fail to recognize the importance of acknowledging and apologizing for past harm, it undermines trust and hampers the healing process. Encouraging leaders to reflect on their actions and hold themselves accountable can help promote empathy and understanding within communities.

Try to listen to the survivors ffs.

Japan is patriarchal? lol Survey shows Japanese women have the highest percentage of control over their husbands' income in the world. I live in Japan, and most Japanese men live their lives being careful with women. So nowadays, there are more and more herbivore men in Japan who are afraid of women and live alone. An UA-camr, That Japanese man Yuta conducted a survey on his video in Japan and many Japanese women feel they are treated more privileged than men. And as is the case in custody disputes, no matter how much fault there is on the woman's side, in Japan, the woman's side has a 90% or greater chance of getting custody. And next year, a system will begin to give priority to female students at Japanese universities.

It happens in all organizations secular or religious, cover ups, settlements, NDAs. The Catholic Church is singled out because it operates as a single denomination under a central authority. There’s are millions upon millions of other churches and abuses have happened there just as well but they are treated as independent cases. It’s not a Catholic thing, religious, thing, secular or non secular it’s just deviant human behavior and they walk among us everywhere and all walks of life.
Nuh-uh. How many other organizations mandate that their personnel go against natural human instinct and live celibate lives? How many organizations instill a sense of shame and disgust in people whose natural sexual orientation is homosexual, arguably forcing them to think they can repress their sexuality by becoming priests and yet allow them to be in charge of young boys? How many other organizations deny women from taking up positions of power so there is at least some check and balance against old boys' clubs comprising priests defending fellow priests?

@@Mark-bd5ci In the case of the Catholic Church SA, I think it’s a bit of both. A bit off topic here, but they were also one of the last churches to issue an apology to residential school survivors, and that was only after some serious political pressure was applied after finding the first 215 unmarked graves at a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia. They have either destroyed or taken a lot of school records when the Truth and Reconciliation report was being released in public from Canada back to the Vatican libraries to cover their tracks-absolutely twisted minds.

These books are also the roadmap for ancient civilization. Our lodestone to the natural order, as religion is often a simple explanation and assumption of how things came to be, how they were, and how their society developed. Almost, philosophical in nature. It can’t be denied that there are good messages to do with religion. Loving your neighbor as yourself. Do unto others what you’d want done to you. These are all very healthy messages for society. What is the deterrence?

It is widespread in all religious and even non-religious institution. The main problem is the institution/organization want to keep their "pure" image in front of the people so most of them try to defend their "purity" by blaming it on the victim.
All churches. All religions. All secular institutions are susceptible.

This is really sad. The Catholic Church needs to give up its billions of dollars, reform to a modest institution all the way to Vatican City, and continue to legally right past wrongs. This is just ridiculous. Men within religious institutions need to be highly monitored, regulated, and scrutinized. The only way to do that, is to even out female representation within religion. This is just absolutely ridiculous.

As a religious Catholic women, I’m not defending the priest, sorry, but I know my LORD and he would definitely not allow this abuse pass by. I’m truly sorry for this woman to have had such a terrible experience with a priest, she should get justice or even a compensation from it. Celibacy is an ancient tradition in the Church, but it is not an infallible decree, in-fact there is Catholic Priests who are married, especially in the Eastern Rite.
However, abuse cases in public schools are much higher than the Church, yet teachers aren't required to be celibate, do you not think that it could be an issue of media bias, focusing and inflating abuse cases in the Church ?

When someone is raped or sexually abused they really do lose their sense of self-worth and dignity. It's impossible to feel like you are worthy of respect when someone sexually abuses you. Sex is such an intimate experience and being forced to do that against your will really fucks you up.
Even here in the Philippines a lot of scandal involving the priest.but still the church protect there own.
Yo I've lived a 45 minute train ride from Sendai, had friends from there, WAS BAPTIZED CATHOLIC, and didn't even know there was a Catholic presence there, let alone a whole ass statue???? 😅 (this is why the church sucks 🤷🏼♀️)
