  • This is a re upload edited version of a much longer video I made as I confess I may have gotten a little carried away with the last one and it ended up being over 1 hour long!
So I took a hatchet to it and chopped a good 42+ minutes out.
Oh well you live and learn.
If you are considering restoring your own tired dull old headlights then this step by step guide may just be what you are looking for.
In this video I will show you how I prepare and restore headlights taking them from dull, yellow, hazy and opaque to clear and bright and looking like new.
I prepare the lights by wet sanding to remove the oxidisation and contaminants before applying a SptayMax 2K (2 part) Clearcoat with UV protection.
After 48 hours once the Clearcoat has fully cured I will then wet sand again to remove the orange peel left by spraying before finally moving on to cutting and polishing to fully restore the lights to their former glory.
This isn’t some quick and temporary method using things like toothpaste or oil but a permanent restoration which will last many years to come.
There are no special tools needed and anyone can restore their own headlights with this method, all that is needed is a bit of care, effort and patience and the results are fantastic.
It’s a job that I love doing and I do get slightly engrossed doing it 🙂
The products and equipment I use are:
    1. Wet and Dry Sand Paper (600, 1000, 2000 and 3000 Grit)
    2. Masking Tape
    3. Masking Paper (Newspaper will do)
    4. Bucket, Sponge Pad & Water
    5. Isopropyl 99.9% Rubbing Alcohol
    6. Micro Fibre Cloths
    7. Spray Max 2K Clearcoat 400ml
    8. Respirator / Mask
    9. Menzerna 1000 Heavy Cut Compound
    10. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound
    11. Meguiar's Ultimate Polish

This is a re upload edited version of a much longer video I made on restoring these Freelander headlights as I confess I may have gotten a little carried away with the last one and it ended up being over 1 hour long!
I realise that was too long for viewers to sit through and watch so I took a hatchet to it and chopped a good 42+ minutes out to make this version.
I’m flying blind with this video making malarky and the learning curve is steep so if you could spare some time to provide any feedback in the comments it would be very helpful to me.
I just want to get better at making content that people will enjoy watching and find useful.
    Thank you

    Couple of tips :
1 st when wet sanding you ant to finish with 800 grit no higher
The reason is you need something for the clear coat to grab on to
If you use or finish with a higher grit the clear coat can easily begin to chip away
    Within a year or so
Especially on the top of the headlight
2K Spray Max Glamour is the right choice
First coat is a light dusting
Your overlap should be about 90%
This will help prevent Orange Peel
Second coat should be a wet or heavier coat
Go slower across the headlight when spraying with a 50% overlap
Same for the third coat if you feel it’s necessary
It should last for years and years this way
Also Orange Peel is common due to technique but also the climate in which you are spraying
As for wet sanding the orange peel I would give the paint a month to completely dry
After 48 hours the top is of course dry but what is underneath is not
It takes time for the paint to “ Gas Out “
Same as the paint that you put on your walls
Top is dry after a day but what is underneath is still wet and needs to to gas out
    Nice Job !
