You can control your own personal image but you can’t control how others will view you. If you simply don’t care, then go ahead and do you. But a lot of people want to do whatever and have people be ok with it at the same time. When I was growing I was raised with the mentality of “ don’t make us look bad” with the “us” being the general black community. Obviously bad is subjective. I think we all contribute to our racial image, but once again if you don’t care then do you.

It a monolith, but let’s not be ok with not holding each other accountable. I don’t understand why when we talk about the big things I don’t see comments about this is what we should be talking about. Talk about it all. Having your own businesses and becoming financially stable all go hand in hand with presenting your best you. Feeling good about yourself sets you in a productive mindset. It’s why there is a posture you’re supposed to have before even praying. Wash you face and come before God. Success for our people is a multifaceted process. I’m not so afraid of Covid to the point where I feel more comfortable with seeing my sistas hide themselves with cover up in order to prevent transmission 🤨. The European straightening of the hair is a little irrelevant to a sista choosing to wear a bonnet or not. Reason being is that the people who are making those suggestions are not suggesting them to straighten their hair. Keeping yourself up in a presentable fashion isn’t seeking validation. It’s holding yourself up to a standard of greatness. When an OG is giving you that game, it’s coming from a place of love and experience. You can either soak up the game or keep it moving. Simple

Monique was not talking down to the bonnet wearers. She actually delivered what is called wisdom. One of the great problems with our community is we don’t know how to hear and accept wisdom. I’ve been in the airport and young beautiful black sisters are in their pajamas with bonnets like they rolled out of bed and came to catch a flight. I’ll say it again for the people in the back, if you don’t respect yourself, no one else will. This piece of wisdom can be delivered simultaneously with all the other things going on in the world. At the end of the day, if a few people recognized the wisdom in what she was saying and stopped wearing bonnets in the public; it’s a win.
