    A huge step in our off grid dreams, we now have our wood cook stove installed and working! Audrey and I spent a lot of time thinking about what type of cookstove to buy. For the longest time my heart was set on finding an old reliable cookstove from the good old days. I found that it is really hard to find one that isn't rusted out, or beat up, or too much money. In all the searching we found this beautiful stove from La Nordica. It is compact (great for our little space) and very efficient and for $2000 we felt that we could give it a go. Now we have a heat source and a way to cook our food that is sustainable on our little homestead. One more big step toward being self sufficient.
    I know the video is a little longer than usual, thanks for sticking it out.

    Thank you for taking us along on your journey! You have a beautiful new wood stove and I am sure I could smell the gingerbread cookies baking in that gorgeous oven. I, too, am living vicariously through your videos and into a life off the grid. How I miss my wonderful Grandmother. So much she could have taught us kids about life as a pioneer in Northwestern Canada. I yearn for the simpler life when utility bills didn’t exist and one paycheque could support the family. I was meant for country life, raising chickens and pigs and growing all my own veggies. Sigh......
    wonderful video folks! Thank you again for taking us along. I absolutely love learning along with you. God Bless you and your family.❤️

    I installed stoves like yours, and one of the things you NEED TO DO is to put a REFLECTOR behind your inside stove pipe. Double flue pipe does not stop the heat. Inside flue can become red hot. Polished Aluminium or Stainless steel on ceramic spacers, 3/4 inch off wall allows airflow behind. Have seen walls char from heat. Maybe alfoil around timbers in roof/ceiling a good idea ,have seem them char also.

    I am going through the same thing. Just put in a Magnum that is the brother to your La Nordica Rosa. So hard to find resources online. We hired someone to put ours in, it was about a 5 month wait. You are so adventurous, and I am cheering for you. Mine is heating up as we speak, baked potatoes going in. It, as everything homesteading is an Adventure. :)

    Looks great ! I grew up with my Mom cooking on one . The food tasted wonderful. Though during the summer it was very hot in the Kitchen. You may want to build a vent hood over it ,to keep your Wife from cooking also . Something simple you can open and close.

    I watched an interesting video last week about a Pennsylvania couple, older, who have been using a wood stove for about six years now (Engineer775 on YT). The lady found a good book on wood stove maintenance and cooking. Some thing applied and some things didn't because it was a totally different stove. One thing that I didn't realize but learned from the video is that when cleaning the cook top you have to do so while it is still warm otherwise it will rust right away. Another thing was that the top turned more of a blue color. It's about two years now since you've installed your beautiful stove so I am curious as to how you like cooking on it and warming the house with it. The folks in Pennsylvania stated that they keep their home of 3,000 sq ft nice and toasty warm with it all winter. They run it 24-7 during the winter months.

    That is a beautiful stove. Be sure to find a nice pot to put water in on the stove as you heat your house. The stove will take a lot of humidity out of the air and the water pot will restore it. So you don't dry out your lips and such. Was there a reason you couldn't put the stove pipe one section to the left and do away with the angles in the exhaust pipe? Great job. I always am paranoid about putting holes in my roof too!

  • @maobfh

    Just tripped over this video, so sorry I am late. I learned to cook on a stove much like this one and no gas or electric is quite as good. Though I will admit they are cleaner. The comments suggesting you put water on the stove are quite correct. Otherwise you can drag your foot the slightest bit and lose all the data on your digital device. Speaking from experience. Did you notice if that is a multi fuel stove? Many of them will also use coal. All mining issues aside, there are old piles of coal around mines and railroads where they put coal on the trains. Get yourself an oven thermometer (or two if you have an oven and warmer or oven and broiler. It would be good to measure the temps of the stovetop, as well. You can get the laser gun temp calculator or a stovetop ‘sticker’ for the stovetop. You will have to learn by trial and error, and will learn to ‘know’ the temp by looking at the top. But the temp gauges will shorten your learning curve significantly. Good luck!

    I am sure you realized after the fact, that you could have put the diagonal piece of pipe further up the stack so it is less obvious to look at.
    P.S. There are lots of Celsius Fahrenheit temperature converter apps and websites. 100°C is the boiling point of water (depending on elevation) 0°C is the freezing point of fresh water.

  • @TheDevonblacksmith
    @TheDevonblacksmith 6 років тому

    i just an observation, an interesting use of the word yurt, it is a russian word that simply means tent, it was used by the russians to describe the circula tents of the peoples of the russian steps, but the occupants of these tents themselves call them gers,
    we have a culture many thousands of years old here in the UK of building roundhouses , I think your building has more in common with these than the tents of the mongols, nice stove better in use than the cast iron ones

    1 tip and 1 question : Tip for Celsius , just remember 3 steps : 0 celsius is freeze point, 100 celsius is water boil point, 200 celsius is baking temperature for most things like bread/cookies/pies: ...
    And 1 question : is there a specific reason why you didn't go for the "Termo" model of the XXL Rosa? This would give you the possibility to heat your entire house by hooking it up to radiators.

      Only if you're making charcoal. 350C is 662F, and that's a temperature that even many pizza ovens don't reach.
      A common temperature for cooking in an oven is 375F, which is 190.5C.

      My model doesn't have the the water heating feature. But it does seem to take good dry wood to get hot. When I need to get my oven hot in a hurry I start with a bunch of small pieces that burn hot and once the heat gets up there I start some medium logs to start creating the coals for a long bake time.

    • @ChiefNonsense
      @ChiefNonsense 2 роки тому

      Frances, I have a similar model (the Rosa L) and my experience with both it and the other stoves I’ve owned is that even a small stove will heat 1200 sq ft easily IF you have decent air circulation. Where wood stoves struggle is when a house is chopped up by long narrow hallways. The heat won’t magically migrate down those hallways without help, so you can end up in one of those scenarios where the living room is 80 degrees and the bedrooms are all uncomfortably cold. Open floor plans and a few ceiling fans running are key.

    a good rule of thumb for converting C to F is by multiplying with 2. so 100C is ruffly 200F. (it would be 212F if you convert it precise) but it's good enough for cooking :)

    • @seikibrian8641

      There are 180 Fahrenheit degrees for every 100 Celsius degrees, so yeah, multiplying by 2 is pretty close.
      The exact formula is (C X 1.8) + 32 = F. Going the other way: (F - 32) X 0.555... = C.

    If I may make a suggestion,make sure you don’t remove the ash that will land on top of your oven portion, under the hot plates. The ash will give your oven a more even heat,

    La Nordica stoves are not made in Italy, as a former dealer I was left with in excess of $1500000 in stock because of the problems I had with customers.

    Did you buy special baking pans to fit inside your oven or would standard pans work? Is it large enough you could cook a turkey in the oven ?

    • @Simplegroundlife
      @Simplegroundlife  6 років тому +1

      Most of our pans do work. A regular sheet pan is the max size.

      i live on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and cooking a turkey in a wood buring stove? nope! We cook our turkey on top in a stew pot and the turkey in a oven bag.... or we cook it in the ground... sooo damn good the meat falls off the bone.

    You left us hanging on the solar system and batteries. What's up? Also you might consider in investing in a cheap hand truck/dolly. It will make life much easier.

    Fahrenheit to Celsius is easy, 100 F -32= 68. 68 times 0.55 = 37.4 Celsius. That's it.

    You should ALWAYS KEEP THE STOVE PIPE 24 INCHES AWAY FROM FRAMING AND RAFTERS AND NO INSULATION WITHIN 24 INCHES FROM THE STOVE PIPE . YOU PUT THE STOVE TOO CLOSE TO THE WALLS !!!
