TIMELAPSE: Couple Building a YURT in 15 Minutes // Off Grid Living
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лис 2020
- This video is a timelapse of how to build a yurt. We bought our yurt from Pacific Yurts (located in Forest Grove, OR). -- www.yurts.com/ -- It is a 30 ft. yurt. When you buy a yurt from Pacific Yurts, you get the yurt kit but not the platform. We show you how to build a yurt from start to finish including the yurt platform.
We built our yurt almost completely on our own. Our kids helped here and there, but they are only 9 so they are limited to how much they can do. We also had one of our great friends, Emily, come and help us when we raised the roof ring, placed the roof rafters, and put on the top cover and side cover. Two people can definitely build a yurt on their own, but having the extra set of hands was a great help.
Our yurt will be our tiny house as we build our cabin in 2021. We will have it be off grid so we do not have to permit it. When a 30 ft yurt is complete, it is about 750 square feet of living space, but we also plan to build a loft in the yurt for additional living space.
And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on UA-cam. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 8 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

This is the single best yurt set-up video out there that I have found. Much better than even Pacific Yurt own youtube channel. Thank you for putting this out.
This SO FUN to watch and relive it all. It also looks like it was SO EASY 😂😂
Thanks for the video! How long did this take in real time haha
@@zacharysmith9472 the yurt took about 3 weeks in real time. 1.5 weeks for the platform and 1.5 weeks for the walls/cover/roof. Really the hard work comes after the assembly of figuring out how you'll heat it. If you'll plumb it and run electrical, and how you'll design it.
My husband and I just bought a fifth wheel to live in while we develop our land and build our yurt!! Then I found your channel today. Thanks for the video it gave me confidence we can do this!! 🤍
You can do it! Feel free to ask us any questions along the way. Watch so big our earlier videos ands it shows in more details our process. B
We're doing a yurt too! Debating between concrete and platform. We have the yurt ordered.
How much overall in supplies did it cost to build the yurt?
My husband and I are doing this. Where can I order this same one. Send me link pls
Did you build it?
Wow , i can't believe you guys did it in 15 minutes. Thats crazy!
We work fast. What can I say.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid My dream is yurt in lapland. Thanks for sharing yours! 👍🏻
@@Thekossiable ohmy goodness, I’m from Finland and i was planning to make a yurt village by the lake in Taivalkoski but I ended up here in Kansas.
Maybe I’ll have a yurt village in Colorado one day.
@@klh-arts9464 Haha, was it hard? Moving from Finland to states? I'm still dreaming about my yurt everyday . But Finland is not as free as it used to be. Need 1000 and 1 permits for building a simple lovely home..
Son fabulosos este matrimonio mis bendiciones para todos ellos.❤❤❤❤
Loved the team work in this! You are clearly very skilled and know what you are doing! 😍
Honestly we are learning a lot as we go. But that is all part of the fun.
This is AMAZING! I would love to build my own yurt one day.
We have lots of tips for you on what NOT to do. Feel free to reach out if you start looking. We loved working with Pacific Yurts.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid I might come back to you with questions, I wanted to build a yurt for years, but let’s see if it ever happens.
Very interesting video and great to see how things developed through the use of the time-lapse. Thanks for posting this. Bex & Carlos xx
This is the ideal yurt video

Appreciate the help! The Algo hasn't caught on yet.
Amazibg achievement. And no divorce. 🤣🥳🥳🥳. You guys are awesome. Yay to the yurt! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Lol! We made it through. This was practice for the cabin build. Thank you so much! We're so excited!
Loved watching this! Great job on the base, I see you took your time and added insulation etc. Nice!

this was truly amazing to watch!
I just bought a 24' used yurt and refurbished it. It was months of work. I wish I had seen your videos before I started. You both (+helpers) did a remarkable job. WELL DONE!
Glad you enjoyed the videos, but sorry you didn't see them earlier. Was the yurt you bought a Pacific Yurt?

Thanks. It was a ton of work but now we get to enjoy it for years to come.
That was so cool to watch!
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! I started crying about 6 mins into it and then a hummingbird came flying up to me. All I heard after that was "Don't Give Up". Again THANK YOU FOR YOUR SHARING THIS BEAUTIFUL MEANINGFUL STORY WITH ME.
Amazing. Well done
Thank you! Cheers!
That was amazing to watch! Three adults and two kiddies (and the dogs were a great help as well). I also liked that you added that circumference to keep the rain out. And maybe the bugs as well.
Thank you! The dogs definitely help. Lol! We've lived in the yurt for almost a year now, and the bugs have been VERY low that make it into the yurt so the perimeter edge must help with that. We also sealed it with a foam strip when we screwed down the skirting. And we have been SO impressed with how dry the yurt has stayed. With the pellet stove going it stays very low on the moisture side!
Children are serious competition for you, this little Boss Princess perfectly organizes all employees :D KEEP CALM AND CONTINUE TO MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!
The kids have been good helpers while their parents do these crazy projects. It’s something they will remember fir sure.
LOVE your story and the whole concept of living off the grid!!
Thanks for watching. We are having a lot of fun in the process. Hope it shows. 😄

So great. One day I want to buy my Independent and built a Yurt.
We are doing this!!!!
Me and my family are building. Yurt village in a year so excited
That sounds exciting! Where are you building and how many yurts will you have?

I am amazed that the latticework walls could handle the weight of the roof! Very cool structure
It’s amazing how strong they are!
isnt it required to post the lattice wall or is this model different
Pulled in the gate with the lumber & thought “well damn, there goes a million dollars”
Maravilhoso 😍😍😍😍
❤❤❤
How well does this handle the winds here? I’m hoping that my husband and I will eventually settle down and maybe get something like this. Right now we are doing the rv thing. Thanks for sharing!
So far it has done great but we only just installed it this summer and we haven’t had a big wind yet this winter. That being said, I’m not very concerned. We installed the optional snow and wind kit that provides a lot more stability. We are in Washington state by the way.
We have also visited Pacific Yurts, put in our specifics on a 3D build for the 30fter. Me and my girlfriend are looking for land in Joshua Tree, then will purchase the Yurt. I’m not as handy as you, so I’m going to have some friends help build the base.. I was very impressed by the two/three of you and this video. Has got me very excited. Hope to hear back from you on this comment.
It was a great experience for us. Check to see what the lead time is. It took ours 90 days to build do we were able to build the platform during that time. What are you planning to use for flooring?
Watch the dull episodes on our channel and I’m sure you’ll pick up a few things Not to do.
Let us know if we can answer any questions.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid Thank you so much for responding, I’m talking to my girlfriend right now about you all at this very moment. I have the pamphlet with all the quotes and floorplans. We know we are going to have a floating floor, we’re not sure what material. First we thought about cork , but we found out that it scratches up real easy and mice will eat it. We don’t know what type of flooring we will have, do you have any suggestions, will be building in the desert. Of Joshua tree. The people at Pacific Yurts told us it would take about 3 to 4 days to put up.. but of course that’s not taking into affect the time to build a base. I will look at your whole video to see the “dull moments” 🤣.. depending on the land, will determine if we are using solar panels, batteries, or electricity. We will probably have a lot of questions. We just came back from Pacific Yurts Last Saturday. We live in Sacramento California.
For us, building the platform was harder work than setting up the yurt. We went with T&G car decking for our floor which meant we didn’t have to put down plywood. We have been happy with it so far.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid We were thinking of some type of tongue and groove flooring. That’s what we did in our house, with laminate. What type of power are you using, solar, generators, electricity? Based on what type of land we get in Joshua Tree, that will determine what source of power. Most likely solar panels I’m thinking. Yeah I see You guys did a great job putting the Yurt together..I watch the other videos were people put the rafters on with the slit upside down..And had to rotate it on the tension wire after they had everything up.
That is a massive yurt ! 😅 looks like the great khan himself would live in something like this
I didn't see you put any insulation on the sides of the yurt. Did I just miss that part. Really awesome work, so glad you filmed it!
We ended up putting up the insulation after the side cover went on. It wasn’t super interesting footage so I left it out. Here is the full episode though if you want to see that part.

@@OneFootOfftheGrid Oh cool, thanks! I have a yurt ordered for living on the Big Island of Hawaii, and we opted out on the side insulation; so that's why I noticed. Enjoy your yurt!
Awesome video! I just started installing the beams for the platforms for 2 30’ yurts. What nails did you use for the t&g floor? I was planning on 2 3/8” ring shank.
We used 3 1/4” framing nails drove in at the tongue. It’s worked well but if I had to do it again I’d take the time to put down construction adhesive at each nail point.
Good luck on your build.
Where did you buy your cabin kit from? Great video thanks!
We bought our cabin from conestoga log cabin homes. The yurt is by Pacific Yurts.
That's a lot of work.
I didn’t want this video to end 😢
Thank you! Be sure to go check out our complete Yurt Build playlist if you want MORE!. :)
Greetings from Reddit. Good stuff and good luck going forward :)
Thank you for following us over.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid Offgrid stuff is extremely interesting, and I actually hadn't stumbled upon a yurt build before. So, thanks for the video :) now I know how that looks like.
@@eowendyl I’d recommend having at least 3 people to raise the roof. We tried with just the 2 of us and it was a little scary.
Hey awesome video! Do you have a parts list for this deck? I’m trying to build one myself
We followed the plans provided by Pacific Yurts. They have their plans online here: www.yurts.com/downloads/
Love the video, thank you for sharing your journey.
Can i ask for your plans on your deck?
We are about to try the same thing and any guidence would be appreciated
Minty thanks
They are the official plans from Pacific Yurts. www.yurts.com/downloads/
While these tents are commonly referred to as Yurts...yurts have rafters which curve downwards just before the sidewall...this design with straight rafters is called a Ger.
Dig holes three feet deep, put in a tire, fill with dirt, tamp well, use lag bolts to screw through the sidewall of the next tire, screwing it to the first one, repeat until you are 2 feet above grade. This will give you almost free footings that go below the frost line, which will prevent the floor buckling in the winter.
Either make a mechanism which will raise the clear plexiglass dome on the roof ring, so you can vent heat when it's hot outside, or just use the cloth cover the Mongolians used for centuries.
Build a Rocket Mass Heater, with the thermal mass built into the wood deck to save space, so you can heat the Ger efficiently all winter.

nice :)
Gorgeous yurt! Curious about how much in materials the platform costs? I am looking at yurt kit that includes the floor kit and trying to compare. Thanks!
2 years ago it cost us about $5,000 to build the platform, I'm sure it would be significantly more today with the increased lumber prices. I'd guess $8k - $10k. This was for our 30' yurt.
How is that floor holding up? We are considering doing stamped concrete (we are northern WI) but worry about the cold
Wow the view of the lake at the end!!!! Where are you? Tahoe?
It’s actually the Hood Canal in Washington State.
Amazing with only three people you managed to assemble the yurt. I know how heavy and awkward it is to maneuver canvas. What seemed minutes was a very long time to put it together.
That was probably the hardest part of the setup. And I got the privilege of carrying it up there twice! Can’t imagine what their “Heavy duty” version weighs.
Awesome! What was the approx cost for your platform and substructure?
You guys inspired us so much I am picking up our yurt from Pacific Yurts in spring. Ryan what was the dimensions of your trailer that you picked the yurt up with , need to make sure mine will do the job. Thanks again.
Our trailer is 12' 5" but has an open back and Pacific Yurts recommended a 14’ but they were able to load ours just fine. I did attach a piece of board to the back of the trailer but honestly I’m not sure it did any good. The rafters on our 30’ were 14’ 10” so there was a significant overhang, but it was still legal in Oregon/Washington. Excited for you guys! What size did you get?
@@OneFootOfftheGrid Thanks for the response! Yes we bought the 30 ft. as well, so I saw the rafters are just short of 15 feet . Our property is also in WA state but in the mountains.
Thanks for a great video. My wife and I have been contemplating a yurt for almost 30 years. We are ordering shortly and looking forward to getting the process going on our property on Lake Superior! How big was the yurt you set up?
We did a 30’.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid Thank you
We have a 16 ft yurt from Pacific Yurt. I noticed that you insulated the floor and the roof, but not the walls. (We did all three surfaces and are also in the PNW). How did you decide about which surfaces to insulate?
Thanks, Ramona
We did insulate the walls. We just bought our own insulation from a third party instead of buying from Pacific Yurts.
Amazing!! What size was that Yurt??
This is a 30' Yurt by Pacific Yurts.
Well that was productive 15 minutes. How many days was this? Two?
Good job, guys!
It was over a week.
When did you build and how are the concrete footings holding up?
We put them in 1.5 years ago and they have held up great.
I love this!!! Did you guys need a permit? This motivates me to build one of these
In our county a permit was not required as long as certain restrictions were followed.
Out of curiosity, what was the actual time spent building your yurt? I love the video and my husband and I are considering this.
The platform took about 7 days with just the two of us. The yurt went up in 3 days with an additional friend helping. We love ours!
Thank you for the speedy response. Absolutely amazing!!!
Amazing! How many man hours was put into this?
The platform took us about a week and a half, and the yurt kit took 3 days. It was mostly just me (Sara) and my husband (Ryan). We were grateful to have our friend Emily help for part of the yurt kit.
Osha wants your #
Lol great video though < 3
Glad you liked the video. We are certainly still learning.
Do you mind sharing budget? I’d like to put one in our area. Thank you
With the platform, add ons, isulation, and our used pellet stove, we are right around $20,000 put into the yurt. This is a 30 ft. yurt, so you can get smaller models, and you can choose less or more add ons.
Any chance of asking you what the Permiting process was in your local? We have property in Hell’s Canyon and are considering a Yurt structure.
Great video!!
ThNks!!
We were able to put up the yurt in our county as an "unpermitted structure" as long as the platform height wasn't more than 30" high and we didn't have permanent electrical or plumbing ran to the structure.
So fun to watch, lovely family.
How much cost it?
The yurt cost around $12k and the platform ended up costing around $5k. That was before limber prices went crazy though.
Hello! Me and my family are going to start a community farm with many yurts and one huge yurt for religious purposes, I tried to gather as much as I could from the video but if it isn't to much to ask what are some things that made the job a whole lot easier?
Very smart to ask these questions before trying to install. A couple of the most important ones:
1. Have more help than you think. The covers are extremely heavy. I'd say having 4-5 people would make it go pretty smoothly.
2. Use a scaffolding. I've seen people place the center ring with only using ladders, but the scaffolding make things so much easier.
3. Think about unfolding the cover first and then refolding. Ours what so stuck together it made it almost impossible to unfold. We put some baby powder between the folds to make it easier to install (the second time).
4. Platform - Use construction adhesive to secure the boards to the joists to prevent squeaks.
Hi, what is the size of the decking board used? Do you paint or stain it? Very interesting video.
It is a 2x6 T&G board. Sometimes referred to as “car decking”. We are planning to stain it and then finish with a polyurethane.
Where did you buy those decking boards? Seems hard to find 2 by 6 boards. Thank you.
@@wenqiaoyuan55 we just called around to our local lumber yard. I don’t think HD had them.
Well, that wore me out and all I did was watch!
You've been cheering us on from the sidelines the whole time.
Does the foundation need to be below the frost line?
what’s the cost on the lumber ?? 🤔 just wondering ! thanks 🙏🏼
